passed away suddenly on Sunday 12 May, in Comox. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne and daughter, Genevieve, sister, Margaret and Ivan Klaric and family, Tom, Richard and Kathy, Sister, Christine and Michael Spicer and family Belinda, Kim and Christopher in England.
There will be a celebration of life in honour of David, on Thursday, May 16th, 2002 at the Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay at 10:00a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Memory to the Comox Valley Hospice, 2137 Comox Road, Comox, BC. V9M 1P2.

Johnson, Viola Doreen
In Loving Memory of our Mother, Viola Doreen Johnson. Born Dec. 11th, 1927 on the farm in Saskatchewan, lived the past 44 years in Campbell River; where she passed away Saturday May 11th, 2002.
Funeral Service will be held at the Ocean Crest Salvation Army Church, 291 McLean St., Thursday, May 16th, 2002 at 1:00p.m.
Viewing will be held Thursday, May 16th at the Church from 11:00a.m.-1p.m.
Flowers may be sent to the Church or donations welcome to the Cancer Society; who helped our Mom so generously.

Amy, Joan, Allister and Lily Simpson, Sarah Sat, 11 May 2002
Sarah E. “Sadie” Simpson, 94, long-time Oak Harbor resident, died at Mathis Adult Care Home on May 11, 2002.
Mrs. Simpson was born in Oscoda, Mich., on April 28, 1908, to Ezra and Etta London. She was raised in Oscoda and Battle Creek, Mich. Following her high school graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed in civil service. She became a pre-school teacher, a position which she held for many years.
Sadie was married to Ernest Simpson in Washington, D.C., on June 26, 1945. They moved to various duty stations to which he was sent with the Navy, and eventually ended up at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in 1963. In addition to teaching preschool here, she also taught Sunday school wherever she lived. Sadie was a member of First Christian Church of Kingsville, Texas, and attended the Navy Base Chapel at NAS Whidbey and First Baptist Church of Oak Harbor.
Sadie enjoyed Jazzercise at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. She loved her family very much, and her grandson was a particular joy to her.
She is survived by her son Michael E. Simpson and wife Mary of Bartlett, Tenn.; grandson Jon Simpson and wife Erica and great-grandson Jacob Simpson, all of Memphis, Tenn.; also several other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967 and by six brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel, Pastor Clint Webb officiating. Private inurnment will take place at Golden Gate National cemetery in San Francisco, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Arrangements and cremation under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.

Weiler, Genevieve Sat, 11 May 2002
Genevieve Oella Weiler, 82, 20-year resident of Oak Harbor, died at her home on May 11, 2002, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Weiler was born in Ewing, Neb., on June 28, 1919, to Charles Good and Rosa (Reinke) Good. She attended school in Ewing, where she graduated from high school in 1938. On Oct. 11, 1940, she was married to her high school sweetheart, Warren G. Weiler. They lived most of their lives in California. After his retirement in 1981, they moved to Campo Hacienda, north of Oak Harbor.
Genevieve played in a Dixieland Band for 14 years, and played drums in the Senior Band for three years in Oak Harbor. She was active in community affairs, serving as secretary-treasurer of Campo Hacienda Water Association. She was well known in her community.
She is survived by her three children, Nancy Hoxie and husband Norman of Anacortes, Robert Weiler and wife Lynn of Kingston, and Stanley Weiler and wife Sheila of Cecilia, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Patty Williams and husband Howard of Bellingham, Rob Hoxie and wife Tina of Anacortes, Bobby Weiler and wife Yvonne of Bremerton, Staff Sgt. James Weiler and wife Karen of Fort Lewis, Donnie Weiler of Burlington, and Kyle Weiler and wife Suzy of Sedro-Woolley; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim Good and wife Marilyn of Ewing, Neb.; also, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Warren G. Weiler on June 29, 2000.
In keeping with her wishes, no service will be held. Memorials may be made to Skagit Hospice, 1971 SR 20, Sedro-Woolley WA 98284. Arrangements and cremation under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

Vogel, Arthur Sat, 11 May 2002
Funeral services for Arthur R. Vogel will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church with Rev. Jerry Buss officiating. A private family graveside service will follow at Sunnyside cemetery, Coupeville. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
Arthur R. Vogel, 88, died on May 12, 2002, in Everett. He was born Sept. 11, 1913, to Robert and Anna Vogel in Twin Bridges, Mont. He grew up in the Snohomish area and has been a resident of Whidbey Island for more than 50 years.
Mr. Vogel served in the 248th and 14th Coast Artillery in the 1930s. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Coast Guard and as a lieutenant in the Army. He was stationed at Fort Ebey and Fort Casey. He married Mary Lagerlund in 1947 and built a home on Whidbey Island where they lived until her death in 1967. He married Kay Davis in 1970 and they also lived on Whidbey until her death. He built homes on the island during the 1950s and later joined the fire department at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, retiring in the 1970s. He was a longtime volunteer at San de Fuca Fire Station. Mr. Vogel was a member of the Friends of the Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum at Fort Warden.
He is survived by his children, Marilyn Vogel of Bellingham, Donald Vogel of Bellingham, And Richard Vogel of Ashland, Ore.; two sisters, Eleanor Wildermuth and Esther Youngberg, both of Everett; two grandchildren, Chloe and Isaiah Vogel of Ashland, Ore.; and four step-daughters and their children and grandchildren also survive.
Remembrances may be made to the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church or Friends of the Puget Sound Artillery Museum at Fort Warden, 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

whyte, John Allan
Born September 5th., 1925, passed away in the Campbell River Hospital on May 10th, 2002. Predeceased by his son Bruce Whyte in 1971.
He was much-loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Gwendolyn Whyte, daughters Rita (Don) Simons, Lillian Whyte, sons Ken (Lory) Whyte and Sydney Whyte, grandchildren Diana, Cheryl, Darrell, Steven, Kevin, Karl, Garry, Theresa and Carmen (and their spouses) as well as 8 great-grandchildren, 9 brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19th, 2002 at the Campbell River Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers a donation to the chemo room at the Campbell River Hospital would be greatly appreciated.

Smith, Sheila Frances (Nee Boorman)
May 8, 1917 to May 9, 2002
Sheila passed away quietly at Ocean View Lodge Extended Care in Comox, B.C. after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. Sheila will by fondly remembered by many family members and friends.
Sheila was predeceased by her husband Tom and is survived by her son Brian, his wife Jan and sons Curtis, Jason and Kyle of Campbell River and her daughter Joan (Jackson), her husband Byron and sons Robin and Alex of Chico, California.
Funeral will be held at McCall’s Funeral Chapel, Victoria, B.C. on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. with reception to follow.

Knoeck, Rebecca Thu, 09 May 2002
Rebecca Mercedes Knoeck, 80, a nine-year resident of Oak Harbor, died at Whidbey Island Manor on May 9, 2002.
Mrs. Knoeck was born in Jerome, Ariz., on Nov. 28, 1921, to Antonio Garcia and Erlinda (Carreon) Garcia. As a young child, she moved with her family to San Bernardino, Calif., where she attended schools and graduated from high school. She lived in the San Bernardino area for many years, residing in Rialto and Lake Arrowhead, as well as San Bernardino. She also lived in Redwood City, Calif., from 1947 to 1956. She married Max Knoeck and they resided in Whitewater, Calif., near Palm Springs. She moved to Oak Harbor in May 1993. Rebecca was a gifted artist, especially enjoying chalk drawing. She is survived by 12 children: Alfred Aburto of San Diego, Dave Aburto, Vikki Pereira and Jacquelyn Marshall, all of Oak Harbor, Cindy Webber of Ontario, Calif., Teresa and Liz Aburto, both of California, Robin Aburto of Washington state, Jim Aburto and Rebecca Miller, both of Utah, and Linda Aburto and Sam Aburto; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Rachel Dold of San Francisco; also, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and by her brothers and sisters.
Visitation was May 12 at Burley Funeral Chapel. Recitation of the Rosary was May 13 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, followed by Funeral Mass, Rev. John J. O’Leary, S.J., Celebrant. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements and cremation under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

Saunders, Ruth Wed, 08 May 2002
Born Feb. 28th, 1923 in Camrose, Alberta, she was raised in Princeton and Vancouver, B.C. During the W.W. II, she served overseas in the Women’s Military Band. Upon discharge, she trained as a nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, graduating in 1953. After training as a Missionary and learning the language, she travelled to Wonju, Korea. She helped plan the Wonju Christian Hospital and received many honours during her next 33 years serving in Korea.
Predeceased by her brothers, Don and Lloyd and her sisters, Isabel Dawson and Jean Boulter, she is survived by Lorraine (George) Kuper, Pat (Mike) Cross, John (Janine) Saunders, Fred (Dale) Boulter, John Dawson, Jim (Annette) Boulter.
Many thanks to the strong support from Cathy Negrin and staff of Rosewood Care Home.
A Celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at the Chemainus United Church, May 11th, 2002 at 2p.m.

Turk, Vernon Fri, 17 May 2002
Vernon E. Turk, 55, a Gig Harbor area resident since 1959, died May 17, 2002.
He had been employed at Bill’s S & S Tires in Bremerton; he retired in 1989.
He was a member of Port Orchard Bible Baptist Church and then a member of Burley Bible Church.
He enjoyed landscaping, working in his yard and spending time with his family.
Family members include his wife, Georgia; son Kevin Turk (Melodie) of Kent; daughters Allison Erwin of Gig Harbor, DeeDee Altmayer (Larry) of Renton and Cynthia Morgan (Bret) of Gig Harbor; father, Charles A. Turk (Susan) of Ajo, Ariz.; brothers Bill Turk of Spanaway and Roy Turk of Gig Harbor; sisters Janet Davis of Burien, Lyn Rowles of Va. and May Wheeler of Gig Harbor; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 2:00pm Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Burley Bible Church. Remembrances in Vernon’s name may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Assoc., Inc., 701 Dexter Ave. N, Ste. 106, Seattle, WA 98109.

Solene, Kenneth Thu, 16 May 2002
Kenneth R. Solene, 65, of Belfair, died May 16, 2002, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 23, 1936, in Bellingham to Albert and Evelyn (Compton) Solene.
He is survived by his wife Linda.
He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1954 and attended the University of Washington. He served in Germany in the US Army. He retired in 1993 after working as a general manager with General Electric and a planner estimator at PSNS.
He enjoyed carpentry and outdoor activities and was a member of Belfair Assembly of God.
He is survived by his wife Linda; sons Eric Solene of Fall City, Wash., Carl Solene of Whidbey Island, Shane Solene of Belfair and Stephen Solene of Portland, Ore.; daughters Branda Lynn Reidt of Port Orchard, Karldra Lynn Solene of Belfair; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Belfair Assembly of God, Thursday, May 23, 2002. Inurnment at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.
Arrangements were made by Rill Chapel.

Storey, Laurie Thu, 16 May 2002
Laurie Alexis Storey, 52, of Gig Harbor, died at her home May 16, 2002.
She was born on May 11, 1950 in Enumclaw, Wash. to August and Donna (MacKay) Opitz. Laurie is survived by her companion Jim Wilbur of Gig Harbor.
Laurie graduated from Cleveland High School in Portland, Ore. in 1968. She worked in retail sales and credit support for 34 years.
She enjoyed camping, outdoor activities and her grandchildren. She was a Roman Catholic.
She is survived by her sons Michael Anthony Willis of Seattle and Jason Willis of Puyallup; her brother Marvin Opitz of Woodburn, Ore.; sisters Lee Bick of Gig Harbor, Diane Lung of Battle Ground, Wash., Paula Koenig of Canby, Ore., and her twin Patricia Hollander of Seabeck; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church May 22, 2002 at 1 p.m. Please make memorial donations to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Miller, Beverley Wed, 15 May 2002
Beverley Jean Miller, 73, a former Port Orchard resident, died May 15, 2002 at her home. She was born Feb. 21, 1929 in Glenwood, Iowa to Thorn and Ruby (McAlexander) Cheyney. Beverley married Donald George Miller in July 1946. He preceded her in death in 1995.
She graduated South Kitsap High School in 1946 and worked as a head cook at Orchard Heights Elementary School for eight years. She was a lifetime member of T.C. Baldwin Orthopedic guild for Childrens Hospital in Seattle. She was also a den mother for Cub Scouts, a Blue Bird and Camp Fire leader, and she loved gardening, cooking and her family. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by her sons Donald G. Miller, Jr., and Robert A. Miller, both of Port Orchard; daughter Theresa Collins of Mason Lake, Wash.; brothers Thorn Cheyney of Seabeck and Don Cheyney of Suquamish; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother John Cheyney.
Services were held May 20 at Rill Chapel.
Arrangements were made by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
