Tappero, Steve Sunday, 10 Jun 2007
Steve Tappero, of Gig Harbor, died on June 10, 2007, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was 60.
He was born in Glendale, Calif., on Dec. 7, 1946, to Joseph and Sarah Tappero.
He graduated from Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in 1965 and was a long-time resident of the Gig Harbor area.
He is survived by wife Julie Tappero, of Gig Harbor; daughters Sara and Elyssa Tappero of Gig Harbor; brother Chris Tappero of Sam’s Valley, Ore.; and sister Mary Arnestad of Menominee, Mich.
A memorial service was held on June 15 at the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church.
Rememberances can be sent to the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society Capital Campaign, 4218 N. Harborview Drive, Gig Harbor WA 98332-1087.

Reid, Jackie Thursday, 07 Jun 2007
Jackie E. Reid, longtime resident of Port Orchard, died on on June 7, 2007.
He was 75.
He was born in Republic on April 30, 1932, to Albert and Marie (Gariano) Reid.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.
He worked as a carpenter in Kitsap County for many years.
He is survived by wife Anni H. Reid of Port Orchard; son Karl (and wife Donna) Reid of Port Orchard; daughter Christina Reid of Sun City, Ariz.; sister Carol Moore of Tacoma; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He will be inurned at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard. .

Martin, Bernard Wednesday, 06 Jun 2007
Bernard V. Martin, of Port Orchard, died on June 6, 2007, at home. He was 82.
He was born on Dec. 6, 1924, in The Dalles, Ore.
He retired as a chief inspector in law enforcement with the U.S. Customs Department, for whom he had worked for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He enjoyed playing the trombone most of his life and played in The Hometown Band in Silverdale and The Navy Sponsored Farragut Band in Bremerton.
He was a lifelong Elks member and a recent member of the Eagles.
Camping was a favorite pastime of his with the Kitsap Kampers RV Club.
He is survived by his wife, of 55 yrs, Jean; son Mike (and wife Carole) Bakker of Des Moines; brother Eugene Martin of Port Orchard; and three grandchildren.
A memorial will be announced at a later date.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gilbert, Robert Monday, 04 Jun 2007
Robert T. Gilbert died at his home in Grapeview on June 4, 2007.
He was 53.
He was born Nov. 1, 1953, in Corona, Calif., to George and Lila (Botkin) Gilbert.
He married Cheryl Smalley on May 28, 1980, in Port Orchard.
He graduated from Olympic College with an associates degree in engineering.
He owned and operated his own trucking business for 12 years in Grapeview.
He served in the U.S. Army as a Spec. 4 at Travis Air Force Base.
He loved fishing, hunting and camping.
He was a Christian.
He was survived by wife Cheryl M. Gilbert; sons Justin and Elijah Gilbert; daughters Kendra Gilbert and Catherine Gilbert; and six grandchildren.
Burial will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Rodstol, Leonard Sunday, 03 Jun 2007
Leonard Alvin Rodstol, of Port Orchard, died at the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil on June 3, 2007.
He was 93.
He was born on August 26, 1913, to Ole and Pernille Rodstol and lived in the house he was born in on “Rodstol Lane” until moving to Retsil in 2005.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II in 1942 and was a member of the Third Armored Division “Hell on Wheels.”
While serving under Gen. George S. Patton in Tunisia and in 1943, he was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart.
He was an avid sports fan, winning the Seattle Times “Guest Guesser” contest, and traveling with brother Henry Rodstol to the Pasadena Rose Bowl.
Another favorite trip was to Hawaii with nephew Paul Westlund.
He enjoyed playing Yahtzee and Billy Graham Crusades.
He is survived by brother Laurence P. Rodstol.
He was preceded in death by Margaret Westlund, Olaf Rodstol, Oswald Rodstol, Henry Rodstol, Harry Rodstol and Paul Westlund.
A funeral service was June 7 at the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil.
Burial will follow at Sedgwick cemetery in Port Orchard at 3 p.m.

Charles J. Berglund, 82,
PSNS retiree
Charles J. Berglund, of Port Orchard, died on May 30, 2007.
He was 82.
He was born on June 1, 1924, in Hawley, Minn., and graduated from Enderlin (N.D.) High School in 1942.
He married Glory Lindemann on June 8, 1947, in Lucca, N.D.
He retired as a machinist at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton and, after his retirement, worked another five years as a highway flagger.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from May 1943 to February 1946 in Burma & China with Merril’s Mauraders.
He enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, camping, motorhome traveling and high school football and basketball.
He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.
He is survived by wife Glory, of Port Orchard; son Terry (and wife Sue) Berglund of Sedro Woolley; and grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great, great-grandhcildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Bernhard, Arvid and John Berglund.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 11 at Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.

Matracia, Delores Tuesday, 29 May 2007
Delores Margaret Matracia, of Port Orchard, died on May 29, 2007. She was 77.
She was born on Jan. 1, 1930, in New York City to John and Delores (Bunting) Lauer.
She married Guiseppe (Joe) Matracia on May 30, 1967, in Port Orchard.
She worked as a waitress as a young woman and later owned together with her husband “The Guiseppe Speghetti House” in Port Orchard.
She later worked in the Orchard Heights Elementary School cafeteria.
She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
She is survived by brother Robert (and wife Madeline) Lauer of Largo, Fla.
She was preceded in death by husband Guiseppe Matracia in 1977.
A memorial mass was held at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard on June 16, followed by inurnment at Sunset Lane Memorial Park.

Tallman, Raymond Friday, 25 May 2007
Raymond Mathew Tallman died on May 25, 2007, in Gig Harbor.
He was 91.
He was born in Crosby, Minn., on Feb. 22, 1916.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma and went to work on the Grand Coulee Dam project for three years. In 1940 he began 34 years of employment at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He chronicled his years as a youth traveling with his family to Washington state in his story “Trucking West, ” which became a cornerstone for the family’s history.
He was involved many community projects including the Fraola cemetery Association, the Olalla Boat Launching Ramp, various Olalla history activities through the Olalla Community Club, Olalla Elementary School, and the Olalla Bluegrass Festival.
He was an active member and council president of the Olalla Evangelical Lutheran Church and also was a member of Peninsula Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, and nine of his eleven siblings.
Survivors include daughter Jill Schroeder of Phoenix, Ore.; son Kenneth Tallman, of Olalla; brother Ronald Tallman, of Olympia, and four grandchildren.
Graveside services are scheduled for Fraola cemetery in Olalla on June 1 at 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow at Peninsula Lutheran Church in Gig Harbor at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow.
