Ralph Searles Ranney

WAUKESHA - Ralph Searles Ranney passed away Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000. The family would like to thank the employees of Westmoreland Waters, especially head nurse Jill Cousins; Darnell Grey, a man who was strong enough to be gentle; and the exceptional therapists Westmoreland provided - Sandi Webb, Carolyn Knox and Scott House.

Although Ralph was born in Ryder, N.D., on May 7, 1917, he moved with his family back to Kendall when he was very young and always considered Kendall his hometown. He spent five years in Janesville as an electrical engineer for the Power and Light Company there.

Called simply "Ranney" by even his closest friends, he was, according to his college dean, "a born leader of men." This comment appeared in a letter sent to security clearance officers for the Manhattan Project, which he was associated with for two years. A local Waukesha banker called him "one of the most honest men I know."

Ranney enjoyed hunting, fising, John Wayne, the Green Bay Packers and houseboating. As a high school student, Ralph Ranney broke an all-time record for high scores as an all-around athlete.

He was always a loving father and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is also survived by a sister, Fae Ranney Zuhlke (Edward), living on the Zuhlke family farm near Kendall; her older son, Gerald (Helen) Zuhlke; their three sons, Matthew, Andrew and Thomas; their younger son, Kim (Barb) Zuhlke of Oregon, Wis.; their two daughters, Amber and Kristi; and their son, Jeff.
