Charles Carew

Charles Carew, age 75 of Homosassa, FL and Stevens Point passed away Saturday morning March 28, 2009 at the home of his daughter. Per his request there will be no services.

Charles was born June 29, 1933 in Stevens Point, the son of Bernard and Verna (Smith) Carew. He attended local grade school and Emerson High School. Charles served in the United States Army entering the service on March 21, 1956. Charles received his honorable discharge on February 5, 1958 from Ft. Sheridan, IL.

He married Eileen Mansavage on June 25, 1960 in Stevens Point. They were later divorced. Charles was a truck driver and owned several trucking companies for many years before retirement to Florida in 1997.

Charles is survived by his daughters: Kris (John Carpenter) Carew, Stevens Point and Karmell (Mike) Bella, Adairville, KY. Two grandchildren: Jesse Bella and Heather Fletcher; a great grandson Tayden. Two sisters: Carol Bradley, New Brighton, MN and Patricia Thinnes, Cudahy. Six brothers: Thomas (Fran) Carew, Munster, IN; William (Nancy)Carew, The Villages, FL; Gary (Judy) Carew, Watertown; Patrick (Kathy) Carew, Downers Grove, IL; David Carew, Amherst; Chandler Carew, Milwaukee. Nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Catherine Malick and his brother Michael.

George J. Komperda

George J. Komperda, age 59 of 2172 Patch St. Stevens Point passed away Friday March 27, 2009 at St. Michaels Hospital.

Prayer services for George will be at 7:00 PM Wednesday April 1, 2009 at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. Dwaine Habrat will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until the time of services Wednesday evening at the funeral chapel in Stevens Point. A military honors burial will be on Monday at the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial cemetery in King. A memorial in lieu of flowers is established in his name.

George was born May 24, 1949 in Stevens Point, the son of John and Delores (Omernick) Komperda. He attended local schools and graduated from Pacelli High School. George served his country in the United States Army entering the service April 9, 1969. During his service he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged November 4, 1970. He returned to the area and began working as a meatcutter for several Central Wisconsin locations until retiring due to ill health. He married Rosemary King on May 28, 1972 at St. Casimir Catholic Church. The couple later divorced.

George is survived by his son: Robert G. Komperda, Plover. His sister Sandra (Jeff) Therriault, Menominee, MI. His brother John P. Wnuk, Stevens Point; and several close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and former wife.

Arnold Dunbar

Arnold R. Dunbar, 86, of Bancroft, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009, unexpectedly at the Manor Home Care Nursing Home of Shawano.

Arnold was born April 19, 1922, to the late Asa and Annettee Dunbar in the town of Stratford. He then married Donna Swenson of Iola on Jan. 23, 1954, in Waupaca. They then moved to Bancroft in 1963, where Arnold worked at Max Haviland Farms and Central Sands Produce, until he retired in 1984.

He served on the Bancroft Fire Department as a radio operator for five years.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Bancroft; three daughters, Susan Mallison (Gary Deppe) and Cindy (Wade) Ranum, both of Wisconsin Rapids, and Barbara Bembenek of Stevens Point; and six sons, Dennis Dunbar of Bancroft, Steven (Rhea) Dunbar of Wisconsin Rapids, Jerald "Jerry" (Janet St. George) Dunbar of Almond, Keith Dunbar of Hancock, Thomas Dunbar of Plover, and Michael Dunbar of New London. He is also survived by one sister, Alice Kob of Madison; two sisters-in-law, Mayme Dunbar of Waupaca and Mildred Hagen of Rosholt; one brother-in-law, Harold Brooks of Kansas; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and distant relatives in Norway. He is preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters, one granddaughter and one grandson.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Shuda Family Funeral Home in Plover. Burial will be in the Pine Grove cemetery in Bancroft. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

James Mendyke Sr

James Mendyke Sr, age 79, formerly of 310 Virginia Circle Stevens Point, passed away Friday morning April 3, 2009 at North Haven Assisted Living. Services for Jim will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday April 7, 2009 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church. Rev. James Trempe will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 PM Monday evening at the Shuda Funeral Chapel - Stevens Point. The American Legion Post #6 ritual will be at 6:30 PM and an Elks ritual will be at 6:45 PM with a Bible Vigil to be prayed at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral chapel. Visitation will also be from 9:30 to 10:15 AM at St. Bronislava Church on Tuesday. Burial will be at the Guardian Angel cemetery. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in his name for the Community Stadium Renovation Project at Goerke Park.

Jim was born June 14, 1929 in Buffalo, NY, the son of Frank and Rose (Suplicki) Mendyke. As a child the family moved to the Stevens Point area, where Jim attended local schools and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1947. He earned his college degree from Ripon in 1951 where he excelled in football and basketball. Jim entered the United States Army on August 17, 1951 in Stevens Point. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, The Korean Service Medal, Three Bronze Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged as a 1st LT. of the Infantry on June 17, 1953 at Camp Carson, CO. He returned to the area and began his career with Hardware Mutual which became Sentry Insurance. During his sales career he earned the company's Leaders Award 27 times (22 as a Top Performer). He retired in 1993.

He married Joan Mae Christy on September 8, 1956 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Jim was a member of the Stevens Point Elks Club, American Legion Post #6, Eske Lodge, and was a president of the Stevens Point Country Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family. His interests included bridge, fishing, logic puzzles, golfing, bowling, and the family cottage in Hazelhurst.

Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan; four daughters: Jane (Rick) Shuda, LaCrescent, MN; Laura (Jeff) Rasmussen, Plover; Maggie (Shaun) Sullivan, Plover; Beth (Michael) Glodowski, Wilton, ME. Two sons: James Jr (Krista) Mendyke, Stevens Point; and John (Kay) Mendyke, Eden Prairie, MN. Seventeen grandchildren who he loved very much. Two brothers: Robert (Ella) Mendyke, Stevens Point, and Donald (Barbara) Mendyke, Appleton, one sister Mary Wanta, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at North Haven Assisted Living and Ministry Home Care & Hospice for the care they gave to Jim.

Duane Marie Daniels

Duane Marie Daniels, age 95 of Stevens Point passed away Sunday morning April 5, 2009 at her daughters home. Funeral services for Mrs. Daniels will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday April 14, 2009 at St. Stephens Catholic Church. Rev. John Potaczek will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to the time of services at the church. Burial will be in the St. Stephens cemetery.

Duane Marie was born June 30, 1913 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Steil) Martini. She grew up in Fond du Lac and graduated fro Fond du Lac High School. She married Gordan Daniels on April 27, 1935 in Fond du Lac, the coupe moved to Stevens Point in 1939, where they raised their family. Duane Marie was very active in the community and has served as president of the St. Stephens PTA, president of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, A.A.R.P. president, A Catholic Daughters officer, and was a tour guide with her husband for many years for A.A.R.P.. She was an avid bridge player, and played at the Lincoln Center twice a week. Duane Marie was also on of the originators of the Holly Shoppe at the Lincoln Center.

She is survived by her children: Richard (Jeanne) Daniels, Stevens Point; Kaye (Don) Broten, Hinton, IA; Karen (James) Morateck, West Allis; Marilu Daniels, Stevens Point; Margaret (Robert) Konkol, Stevens Point. 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Her sister Anntonette (Toni) Steckel, Marshfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1995, five brothers: Charles, Richard, Harvey, Bill, and Joe. One sister Marcelle Hoerl. The family wished to thank Ministry Home Hospice Care for the wonderful way in which they took care of Duane Marie.

Walter W. Witkowski

Walter W. Witkowski age 98 of Plover passed away April 7, 2009 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. A mass of Christian Burial for Walter will be held at Noon Thursday April 16, 2009 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church. Rev. James Trempe will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 Pm Wednesday at the Plover - Shuda Family Funeral Home. A Bible Vigil will be prayed at 6:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Funeral Home. Visitation will also be on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of services at the church. Burial with full military honors will be at the Parish cemetery.

Walter was born January 5, 1911 in Rosholt, the son of Joseph and Antonina (Kerozinka) Witkowski. After attending Rosholt schools, he worked at Lullybye Furniture and assisted his father building homes in the area. He entered the United States Army January 14, 1943 in Milwaukee. He earned the Asiatic - Pacific Ribbon (3 Stars), the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Victory Medal, and the American Area. He was honorably discharged November 4, 1945 from Great Lakes, ILL. After serving his country Walter returned to the area and began his career at Consolidated Paper where he worked until retirement in 1978. Also during this time he also worked at the Mead Hotel. In 1971 Walter married Reita Sutton in Mauston and couple lived in the home that Walter built himself on Porter Court. Previously Walter had been married to Lillian Trader, the couple were divorced. In his retirement Walter was an avid woodworker and gardener. He is a member of American Legion Post #6, and a member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church usher committee.

Walter is survived by his wife Reita of Plover; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; and one sister Lucille Perkofski, Green Bay. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two daughters and their spouses: Maurita Van Derel and John, Lois Warzon and Jess, one grandson; 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Basil Kizewski

Basil Kizewski, age 81 of Rosholt passed away Wednesday February 18, 2009 at Stevens Point Care Center.

Funeral services for Basil will be held at 11:00 am Monday February 23, 2009 at St Adalbert Catholic Church. Rev. Marcin Mankowski will officiate. Burial will be at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the time of services at the church on Monday. St. Adalberts Men’s Rosary Society of which Basil is a member will combine with the general Rosary to be prayed at 10:00 AM that morning at the church. Shuda Family Funeral Services are assisting the family. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established. Basil was born August 11, 1927 in Rosholt the son of Phillip and Celia (Czerwinski) Kizewski. He attended local schools and began farming on the family farm. He married Caroline Oksuita on October 14, 1961 at St. Adalbert Catholic Church. After marriage the couple owned and operated Basil’s Inn for ten years. Basil then worked for Acme Tree Surgery until retiring in 1982. He enjoyed fishing.

Basil is survived by his wife Caroline; four brothers: Robert (Anna) Kizewski, Amherst; Leonard (Dorothy) Kizewski; James Kizewski; and Larry Kizewski, all of Milwaukee. Three sisters: Henrietta (Jim) Stieber, Mosinee; Phyllis (Casimir) Berna, Milwaukee; and Leona Kszionsk, Hubertus. His parents and one brother Harvey preceded him in death.

Basil was the original Uncle for us Gilmeister boys. As we grew up, we would play, work, fish, hunt and drink along-side him. Basil was always quick with a smile and a joke. He loved to make others laugh and smile too. We will miss him dearly.

Bettie Grimes

Bettie Grimes, 73, went to join the Lord on her birthday, Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at the Portage County Health Care Center in Stevens Point. She bravely fought a 10 year battle with a rare brain disease.

She was born Feb. 20, 1936 in Mississippi, the daughter of the late Everett and Helen McAnally. She married George Grimes Jan. 29, 1955, in Michigan. He preceded her in death in 2001.

She is survived by two children Diane (Ron) Simonick, Stevens Point and Steve (Jane) Grimes, MI. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Brian, Rachel, Ian and Lorna as well as many family and friends.

Bettie will be so missed by everyone who knew her. She was loving, giving and caring while always having grace and dignity.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at First Congregational Church, Wayne, Michigan. The Rev. Will Lange will officiate. Visitations will be from 3 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday at UTH Funeral Home in Wayne, Michigan.

Shuda Family Funeral Services, Plover & Stevens Point, are assisting the family.

A memorial in lieu of flowers has been established for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Isabelle T. Bushman

Isabelle T. Bushman, 94, of Stevens Point, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the Portage County Health Care Center.

Services for Mrs. Bushman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Stevens Point. The Rev. Al Jakubowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven cemetery in Marshfield. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of services at the church.

Isabelle was born July 13, 1914, in Marshfield, the daughter of Henry and Rose (Bomen) Weigel. She attended schools in Marshfield and then began working in Chicago before her marriage. She married Herbert Bushman on Sept. 28, 1937, at St. John's Church in Marshfield. The couple lived in Marshfield for five years before moving to Stevens Point. The couple resided on Illinois Avenue for many years before moving to their Heffron Street address. She has resided at the care center the past two years.

Isabelle worked at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as the housemother at Neal Hall and cook for 25 years before retirement. She enjoyed bowling and spending time with family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Portage County Health Care Center for the care both Isabelle and her husband Herbert received.

She is survived by her three children, Lois Jean (Franklin) Miller, Stevens Point, Gordon (Kitty) Bushman, Lincoln City, Ore., and Wayne (Carol) Bushman, Junction City; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandsons; her son-in-law, Harley Peterson, Stevens Point; two sisters, Roselyn Adler, Marshfield, and Marie Husedt, Wausau; and her sister-in-law, Agnes Weigel, Marshfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert, in 2005; her daughter, Carol Peterson, in July 2003; and two brothers, one sister, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Blanche Urbanek

Blanche Urbanek, age 99, formerly of Chicago area passed away March 7, 2009 in Plover WI. Beloved wife of Dr. Frank Urbanek. She was a self employed decorator and decorated homes. In her later working years she had clients in Florida, Arizona, California, Illinois and one in London. She was also a gormet cook, member of Chicago's Wine & Cheese Society, and was featured on an entire page in the Chicago Tribune about her cooking, decorating, and lifestyle in Chicago and Palm Desert, California.

Robert Leo Berard, "Hatch"

Robert Leo Berard, "Hatch" as he was known to family and friends, passed peacefully away at home March 11, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Stevens Point. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Mr. Berard was born Jan. 15, 1920, in Wisconsin Rapids, the son of Wilber and Louise Berard. He graduated from high school in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army in World War ll. After his military duty, he completed his college education at the University of Wisconsin where he was so proud of his degree in Philosophy. Hatch began his career with Hardware Mutual Insurance, now Sentry Insurance. He later began his own insurance agency. He started to dabble in real estate and purchased various parcels of land in and around the Stevens Point area. This began his entrepreneurship in agriculture. His tree farms came first followed by his potato and vegetable business, Paramount Farms, Inc. He also owned Northern Wire in Merrill, until the late 1990s.

On Sept. 14, 1943, he married Mary Patricia Cashin of Stevens Point. She preceded him in death in 1996. He is survived by nine children, James Michael (Sue) Lake Tomahawk; Mary L. Berard, Minneapolis; Patricia G. Anderson (James) Stevens Point; Margaret A. Helz (Timothy) Nashotah; Sue Ann Berard, West Palm Beach, Fla.; Jeannette Goudailler, Campbell, Calif.; Robert J. (Mary) Stevens Point; William J. (Kathie) Edina, Minn.; Michelle K. Berard, Durango, Colo; and by 11 grandchildren and 10 great grand children.

Mr. Berard was a member of St. Stephen's, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, and Hot Shots. He loved spending summers on Lake Katherine in Hazelhurst water skiing and swimming, and the winter weekends snow skiing in Michigan's upper peninsula. He was a life long fan of the Green Bay Packers.

In 1998, he donated land to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as an addition to the Schmeeckle Reserve and is known as Berard Oaks.

Memorials may be designated in his name to St. Stephens Parish, Stevens Point
