Marlys Ness

Marlys Ness, age 76 passed away Friday March 20, 2009 at Harmony Living Center in Stevens Point. Private services were held. Shuda Family Funeral Services & Crematory of Plover & Stevens Point were entrusted by the family to assist in arrangements.

Marlys was born April 20, 1932 in North Dakota, the daughter of the late Ener and Laura (Peterson) Carlson. She was an elementary school teacher. The surviving children of Marlys Ness are: Debbie Kjos, Dixon, Il; Donald Olson;Clifton, NJ; Pam Burow, Fergus Falls, MN ; Dean Ness, Snohomish, WA. seven Grandchildren: Noah and Aaron Kjos, Dixon, IllLori Terrel, Stevens Point, WI; Tim Olson, Kearny, NJ, Tyler Olson, currently serving in the Peace Corps, Guyana, South America, Tate Olson Clifton, NJ Austin Ness, Snohomish, WA Great Grandchildren Christian, Justine, Joy Terrel, Stevens Point, WI. Sherin Rose Bowen

Sherin Rose Bowen, 71, Stevens Point, WI, passed into eternity late Friday, March 20, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Milwaukee, WI, following a head injury sustained in Managua, Nicaragua five days previous. Sherin was born February 28th, 1938 in Medford, WI to Arthur and June Schneider. Following her father’s untimely death her mother June married Herman Lemke. She attended the one room Thielke School and graduated from Medford High School in 1956, after which she was employed by Rural Farm Insurance in Madison, WI. She married Robert Orville Bowen, Curtiss, WI, on December 29, 1956 in Medford and they resided in Madison until Robert’s graduation from UW-Madison in 1958. They subsequently moved to Milwaukee where her husband taught at Granville-Brown Deer High School. In 1966 Sherin, Bob and their 3 young children moved to Stevens Point and to become a part of the UW-Stevens Point community. Over a period of nearly two decades Sherin devoted herself to raising four children, Robert Jr., Bryan, Elizabeth and Amy. From 1969 to 1971 the family resided in Bloomington, IN where her husband attended graduate school and Sherin embarked on a fiber (knitting etc.) teaching career that has remained her lifelong passion and also provided financial support to the “student based” family. In 1971, Sherin and her family returned to Stevens Point were Robert assumed a professorship in Health Education at UWSP. Throughout this time she and her husband Bob were active members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. In 1973 the family settled at what would become known as Rocky Ridge Farm on North Second Drive, a place that provided an expression for her many creative interests including Picture Framing, 4-H leadership, raising sheep and spinning, weaving and knitting. After graduating from the Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program she traveled to China, which gave her a new vision for international development. She and her husband Bob later led and coordinated Semester Abroad Programs for students at UWSP. She also led a Rotary leadership tour to Argentina. These experiences inspired her to pursue a Bachelors Degree in International Development that she received in 1991. She assumed the Executive Director position with Wisconsin Nicaragua Partners (WNP) in 1992. She brought organization, passion and volunteer involvement to the organization over the next 15 years; encouraging the development of over 100 Nicaraguan learning centers. In 2001 she received the UWSP Distinguished Alumni Award for her significant international development achievements. In 2005 she attempted semi retirement to pursue knitting and the development of the family retreat on Lake Esadore near Medford, WI. Even though retired, she continued to play an active role in WNP assisting her daughter, Amy, who is the current Program Director. To the very end she gave so much of herself to others whether it was to her family or the people of Nicaragua who she loved so dearly.

She is survived by her husband Bob Sr. her children, Bob Jr., Bryan, Beth (Smith) and Amy (Wiza), her mother June Lemke, her two brothers David (Shirley) and Russ (Marlene) Lemke, 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Woodlands Church Chapel on Friday evening from 5:00-8:00 pm & Saturday 2:00-3:00. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 27, 3:00 pm at Woodlands Church, Plover, WI.

Valerian "Pepper" Wnuk

Valerian "Pepper" Wnuk, 92, of Stevens Point, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009, under the care of Ministry Home Hospice and his loving family at Harmony Commons. He had been in ill health for the past year and a half year.

Services for Mr. Wnuk will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Stevens Point. The Rev. John Potaczek will officiate. Burial will be in Guardian Angel cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and again from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. The American Legion Post No. 6 and the 40 et 8 will hold a ritual at 6:30 p.m., the Moose Lodge No. 1572 of Stevens Point will hold a ritual at 6:45 p.m., and the general rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Friday, all at the funeral chapel.

"Pepper" was born Sept. 13, 1916, in Plover, the son of Frank and Gertrude (Kieliszewski) Wnuk. He attended local schools and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School. He entered the United States Army /Air Force on Dec. 29, 1941, in Wausau. He served his country as a staff Sargent and earned the victory medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, four Overseas Service Bars and one Service Stripe. He was honorably discharged Dec. 5, 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Pepper returned to the area and married Eleanor Golla on Jan. 12, 1946, at St. Peter Catholic Church. He worked as the safety manager at Consolidated Papers for 38 years, retiring in 1978.

He was an active member of the Stevens Point Evening Lions Club and delivered fruit baskets and played "Santa" at the Portage County Health Care Center until he was 80. He played golf until he was 89, and also played in the men's over 50 softball league for many years. He enjoyed ice fishing, and was an avid Pointer basketball fan. He loved watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren play sports.

Pepper is survived by his children, LeRoy (Jane) Wnuk, Racine, Judy (John) Haferbecker, Amherst Junction, Ken (Bev) Wnuk, Plover, and Patti (Andy) Wojciechowski, Rothschild; grandchildren, Jenny Wnuk (Bedker), Katie Wnuk (Staelin), Kim Wnuk (Boyce), Jackie Haferbecker (Eckman), Jay Haferbecker, Billie Brahmstead, Jill Entzminger (Hailey), Dane Entzminger and Mandy Entzminger; great-grandchildren, Fielding Staelin, Tennyson Staelin, Elsa Staelin, Payton Boyce, Nyle Boyce, Trenton Boyce, Alexis Haferbecker, Cayden Haferbecker, Cameron Haferbecker and Kelly Franks; and his sisters, Dorothy (Bob) Tice, Sturgeon Bay, Jean Houck, Stevens Point, and Marcine (Frank) Wilfrath, Waukesha. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor in 2006; two brothers, Raymond and Gerald; and one sister, Evelyn Anderson.

Ernest L. Glodowski

Ernest L. Glodowski, age 71 of Stevens Point passed away Sunday March 1, 2009 at St. Michaels Hospital after a long illness.

A mass of Christian Burial for Ernest will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday March 5, 2009 at St. Stephen Catholic Church. Rev. John Potaczek will officiate. Burial will be at Guardian Angel cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories form 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. A general rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Visitation will also take place on Thursday from 9:30 to the time of services at the church.

Ernest was born April 11, 1937 in Rosholt, the son of Mathew and Regina (Kosobucki) Glodowski. He grew up in Rosholt and graduated from Rosholt High School and continued farming on the family farm. Ernest served his country in the United States Air Force, and after returning from service, he married Carolyn Yetter on November 10, 1956 at St. Peters Catholic Church. The couple moved to Stevens Point after eight years on the family farm. Ernest worked for the Stevens Point Street Department for 27 years before retiring in 1997. After retiring from the street department Ernest helped out at the family farm and also worked at Stuczynski Trucking part time. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and was known for his wood working. He loved life and being with his family and especially his grandchildren. He liked to spend time at the family cottage up north and the companionship he had with his dog, Rambo.

Ernest is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn and their two children: Susan (Tom) Brennegan, Stevens Point and John (Tricia) Glodowski, Perkasie, PA. Six grandchildren: Shannon and Ryan Glodowski; Rebecca Gawlik, Ryan, Bethany, and Sam Brennegan. One brother Joseph (Gert) Glodowski, Rosholt; three sisters: Ramona (Chester) Yach, Galloway; Theresa Stanislawski, Rosholt; Agnes (Ron) Kobishop, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Emily Fredach.

Barbara K. Niewiadomski

Barbara K. Niewiadomski, 73, of Stevens Point passed away March 3, 2009, at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Friends and family will share memories from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point.

The family will hold a time for reflection with music at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. A private burial will be in St. Stephen's Catholic cemetery on Monday.

Barbara was born April 30, 1935, in Portage County, the daughter of Harold and Doris (Johnson) Mohr. She attended schools locally, and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School. She married Eugene Niewiadomski on June 22, 1953, in Stevens Point. The couple settled in Stevens Point and raised four children. Barbara worked at Portesi's Italian Restaurant, Northpoint Restaurant, and at Frank's Hardware, before retiring from Sentry Insurance as a claims technician.

Barbara loved to travel and spend time with her grandchildren. She was known for her rescue of bears -- she would clean and repair the bears, and then donate them to children at the hospital and elsewhere. She also made mohair bears, knitted mittens and scarves for family members and friends. She served on the board of advisers for Portage County Hospice. Barbara enjoyed camping with her family, and fishing with her husband.

She is survived by her children, Al Niewiadomski, Plover; Dori (Gary) Singer, Stevens Point; Norman (Kerrie) Niewiadomski, Plover, and Dawn (Randy) Hass, Stevens Point; six grandchildren who knew her as "Grandma with the Kitty," Clayton Niewiadomski, Kurt (Melissa) Singer, Cheri Singer, and Dylan, Sierra and Dakota Niewiadomski; two great-grandchildren, Victor and Anthony Singer; one brother, Richard (Susan) Mohr, Arbor Vitae; and two sisters, Donna (Walter) Fischer, Plover, and Loretta "Lori" (David) Kontney, Sussex. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Eugene in 1987.

Lucille Rose (Miller) Stephani

Lucille Rose (Miller) Stephani, age 86 of 1925 Madison St. died peacefully Thursday afternoon March 12, 2009 at the Bethany Nursing Home in Waupaca where she has resided the past year.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held for Lucille at 10:00 AM on Monday March 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Al Burkhardt will officiate. Burial will be at the parish cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Sunday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. A general Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM at the funeral chapel. Visitation will also be from 9:00 AM Monday until the time of services at the church. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in her name. > Lucille was born September 2, 1922 in Poniatowski, WI, the fifth and last child of Albert and Anna (Jesko) Miller. She graduated from Edgar High School in 1940. She married Frederick Stephani on August 21, 1943 in Poniatowski. The couple lived in Stevens Point from 1947 to 1964 and than lived in Chicago until returning to Stevens Point in 1970. She spent most of her life raising and loving her 10 children and volunteering at St. Joseph's School and Church, where she was a member of the St. Anne Society. She also sang in the adult choir at the church. After raising her children, she worked outside the home at ColorCraft for several years. She enjoyed travel, from Florida to California, and never missed a huge family Thanksgiving celebration. Lucille was also a fixture at Jefferson School working the polls for elections.

Survivors include seven daughters, Ann Marie (James) Zagzebski, Madison, Judith (John) Fitzgerald, Chicago, Susan (Jim Carmichael) , Carla (John Hanson), and Barbara (Brady Templeton) of Madison, Jean (Gary) Klismith, Stevens Point, and Lori Boex, Chicago; three sons, John (Lynn), Waupaca, William (Mary), Naperville, IL., and James (Lisa), Amherst; one sister, Penny Miller, South Milwaukee; 18 grandchildren, Kathy and Lynn (Pablo Tovar) Zagzebski, Amy (Michael) Galibois, Karen (Jude) Boudreaux, Gena (Chris) VanDomelen, Kelli (Paul) Lundy, John, Andrew, Joseph, Michael, Adam, and Jordan Stephani, Daniel Templeton, Emily, Elizabeth, Ryan, and Ellen Klismith, and Timothy Boex; four step-grandchildren, Kara, Brett, and Brenda Moorhouse, Andrew Schoengrund; five great-grandchildren, Bridget and Leah Galibois, Sofia and Nicolas Tovar, and Claire VanDomelen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fredrick in 1984, and her three brothers, Leonard, George, and John.

Lucille G. Weronke

Lucille G. Weronke, age 80 of Stevens Point passed away Saturday evening April 9, 2011 at the Portage County Health Care Center, where she has resided the past 5 years. Funeral services for Lucille will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday April 14, 2011 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rev. George Thayilkuzhithottu MSFS will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM on Thursday until the time of services at the church. A rosary will be prayed at the church at 10:00 AM Thursday for Lucille. Burial will be at the Guardian Angel cemetery. Shuda Funeral Services of Stevens Point & Plover are assisting the family.

Lucille was born July 20, 1930 in the town of Stockton, the daughter of Peter and Clara (Prondzinski) Klopotek. She attended Sacred Heart schools before her marriage to William Weronke on August 7, 1948 at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church. After their marriage the couple moved to Racine for a couple of years before settling in Stevens Point. She worked at Tempo Department Store for several years along with being a homemaker. Lucille was a member of the Blue Army , and enjoyed gardening and fishing.

She is survived by her children: William (Leann), Richard (Chris), Brian “Rex” (Sue), Dale (Colleen), and Dawn (Jim) Schultz, all of Stevens Point. 14 grandchildren: Shane, Leslie, Amber, Jessica, Matt, Michele, Brooke, Jacy, Dane, Tia, Nate, Jake, Erik, Paige. 9 great grandchildren. Two sisters: Marcella Oksuita, Stevens Point and Betty Slusarski, Aberdeen, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William in 1981, two brothers: Robert and Jerome, and one great granddaughter.

The family wishes to thank the staff on the East Wing at the Portage County Home for the care and consideration they showed Lucille over the years.

Walter A. Pochinski

Walter A. (PAS) Pochinski, age 86 of 1729 S. Cty Rd J & Y, Rosholt, WI., died Saturday April 16,2011 at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.

Funeral services will be held at 10AM on Wednesday at St Ladislaus Catholic Church in Bevent. Rev. Greg Michaud will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 4-8PM on Tuesday and again from 9AM until the service on Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30PM on Tuesday.

Walter was born on March 1,l925 in the Town of Franzen, the son of the late Emanuel & Helen (Kudronowicz) Pochinski. At the age of 14 he started to work in Logging Camps in the Sugar Camp area. He married Evelyn "Mas" Shuda on June 2,l945 at St Casimir Catholic Church. He then worked at local sawmills until moving to Milwaukee. Upon his return to the Stevens Point area he worked construction for Myron Omernik and then for various road construction companies as a bulldozer operator and foreman. He mostly worked for Bob & Jim Kluck Construction Co. His favorite job was landscaping for the new Sentry Building and golf course. After retirement, he had his own bulldozer and cleared land for farmers in the area.

In his younger days he enjoyed hunting, fishing, umpiring softball games and snowmobiling. He also played the harmonica and at the age of six, he was featured on a local radio station. He was a member of the Shantytown Sportsters Club. In his later years he loved to play solitaire, listen to polka music and play with his dogs, especially "Sam", his faithful companion.

Walter is survived by his daughter Maxine (William) Lemke of Rosholt. Grandchildren Leslie--Jody (Michael) Walsh--Jamie (Fiance Cory Arndt)--Billy Jo and Katherine. Great-grandchildren Mikayla, Hannah, & Abigail Walsh. Five sisters Evelyn Jurgella of Custer--Helen (Clarence) Brzezinski & Loretta Barnett of Schofield--Caroline (Melvin) Flegner & Mary Duerr of Milwaukee--one brother Robert Pochinski of Waupaca. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn "MAS" on May 14,l999. Two brothers, Hubert & Herman--Brother-in-laws Adam Jurgella, Barney Barnett, Clark Duerr, Harry Rutkowski & Robert Shuda--sister-in-laws Irene Rutkowski, Ann Shuda & Grace Shuda. Sam his faithful companion also preceded him.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Ivan Schaller and his nurse Nancy--the nursing staff of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit at Aspirus Hospital and especially the care and compassion of Physicians assistant Lori Erdman of Cardio Vascular Associates.

Wendle C. Coulthurst Sr

Wendle C. Coulthurst Sr. age 77, formerly of Birch Dr. in Plover, and of 90th St. Wisconsin Rapids, passed away Friday April 15, 2011 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Visitation will be held Wednesday April 20th from 4 - 8 PM at the Shuda Funeral Home in Plover and again Thursday from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Services will be held at 11 am, Dwaine Habrat will officiate.

Wendle was born January 26, 1934 in Plover, the son of the late Lawrence and Carrie (Pitcher) Coulthurst. Wendle moved to Milwaukee and worked at Alice-Chalmers. Wendle also met his wife Nancy Phillips in Milwaukee where they were later married on May 12, 1956. They moved back to Plover in 1963. He worked at Sunspice in Plover before working at Basic American Foods until his retirement in 1999. Wendle farmed all his life while working and after retirement.

He is survived by his three children: Clara (Stuart) Pask, Ladysmith; Barbara (Daniel) Fritsche, Wisconsin Rapids; Wendle Jr (Teresa) Coulthurst, Plover. 9 grandchildren and 1 great grand child. Two brothers: Laverne (Gwen) Coulthurst, Mayville; Larry (Sandy) Coulthurst, Tripoli. Two sisters: Elaine Kosobucki, Kentucky; Delores O'Brien, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, his sister Estelle(Bob) Danner, and half sister Ruth Dineen.

Elaine M. Johnson

Elaine "Lucy" Johnson age 83, of Stevens Point formerly of Wisconsin Rapids passed away Saturday April 16, 2011 after a brief illness at St. Michaels Hospital in Stevens Point.

Services for Elaine will be at 11:30 AM on Friday at the Plover - Shuda Funeral Home in Plover. Rev Ray Haas will officiate. Burial will be at the Restlawn cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the time of services at the Plover Funeral Home on Friday.

Elaine was born December 29, 1927 in Eau Claire, the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Larson) Anderson. She married Gerald "Jerry" Johnson April 7, 1951 in Eau Claire. The couple later moved and settled in Wisconsin Rapids in 1960. Elaine worked at Sunspice for over 20 years before her retirement in 2000. She enjoyed golfing, sewing, knitting, working in the yard, and going to the casino. Elaine loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Elaine is survived by her two daughters: Cindy Lukaszewski, Minneapolis and Kay (Vinnie) Fonti, Plover. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jerry in 1999, and their infant son Steven; five brothers and two sisters.

Elaine's family wishes to thank the staff of Oakridge Living Center for their kind care over the years.

Jan Koback

Janice "Jan" Koback age 72 of Plover passed away Monday morning April 18, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family. Visitation will be from 9:00am - Noon Saturday at the Plover, Shuda Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at Noon at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Al Moen.

Jan was born October 9, 1938 in Stevens Point, the daughter of Walter and Ruby(Philbrick) Lepper. She graduated from P. J. Jacobs High School in 1956, and married Ervin Koback on June 23, 1956 in Stevens Point. Together they raised seven children, she was the most amazing, incredible, beautiful and loving wife, Mom, Gramma, and Great Gramma any of her family could have ever wished for. She attended all of her grandchildren's activities which included: baseball, football, snow boarding, skateboarding, dance, plays, bowling, volleyball and recitals. She loved weekend road trips, shell collecting, beanie babies, fishing, campfires, bird watching and the Wheel of Fortune. Jan and Erv operated the Memorial Park concession stand for 8 years. She was a dedicated baseball fan of the Rafters, UWSP, American Legion, SPASH and PWYA. And also enjoyed the Green Bay Packers. Mom made the best pancakes in the world and had the quickest slug bug punch!

She is survived by her husband Erv and their children: Michael (Shirley Bailey) his children Megan(Jake)Novak, Cody and Jake; Gregory(Jennifer) their children Sara(Josh) Muszynski their son Payton, Casey(Autumn) and Kyle(Alice) their son Hunter, Ryan and Joe Fuller; Christine(Joe)Fischer their children Justin and Janelle her son Dalton; Brenda (Johann) Varga their children Devin and Quade; Bonnie(Charles) Hansen; Kim (Jodie) their children Lexi and Alivia; Peggy(Scott) King their children Sterling, Mason and Lily. Five sisters: Judy(Ron)Molski, Joy(Forrest)Cummings, Arlene Roy, Gwen Schmidlkofer and Beverly Mahne. Five brothers: Edward (Cathy) Lepper, Gaylord (Louise) Lepper, Dennis(Irene)Lepper, Robert (Barbara) Lepper, and DaWayne Lepper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters:Bernice and Cleaobell three brothers: Thomas, Ernest and Frederick.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Carleen King.

Memorials in lieu of flowers will go to the Jan Koback Memorial Fund.

Sue Sampson

Sue Ann Sampson, 56, 5291 Highway 66, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Sue worked as a waitress at Perkins Restaurant.

Survivors include one daughter, Jamie (Tracy) Drzewicki, Muskegon; two sons, Gregory (Megan) Slamka, St. Paul, Minn., and Eric Slamka, Stevens Point; two grandchildren; her parents, Joe and Aletha (Hill) VanDonkelaar, Grants Pass, Ore.; and one sister, Sharon (Terry) Faulkner, Grants Pass.

Memorial services will be May 7, 2011, in Muskegon, Mich.

The Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point assisted the family with local arrangements.
