Jane Andrea Simons

Jane Andrea Simons passed away peacefully at Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, with her family by her side.

Jane was born in Providence, R.I., to Mary and Francis Heffernan. She married Donald Simons on Oct. 7, 1950. Jane and Don lived in Milwaukee and Durham, N.H., before moving to Wausau in 1965.

Jane is survived by her husband, Don, 5625 Sandpiper Drive, Stevens Point; her daughter, Mary Hackett (Terry) , Stevens Point; her son, Ted Simons (Pam) , Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at 11 a.m.

James Taylor

James E. Taylor, 86, of 5625 Sandpiper Drive, Stevens Point, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at his home.

James was born April 1, 1923, in Christopher, Ky., the son of William and Mildred (Thomas) Taylor. After schooling, James entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 20, 1943, in Louisville, Ky. While serving his country as a Tec 4, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. James was honorably discharged July 12, 1945, in Louisville.

He married Kathryn Babcock on Feb. 2, 1945, in Denver. The couple settled in Beaver Dam until moving to Stevens Point in 1971. They founded Stevens Point Auto Supply in 1971 and operated it until James retired in 1979. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

James is survived by his two sons, Kenneth (Nancy) Taylor and Patrick Taylor, both of Stevens Point; three grandchildren, Gina (Pete) Kolzow, Woodruff, Brent (Candy) Taylor, Stevens Point and Molly Taylor, West Lake Tahoe, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Brook Taylor, Stevens Point; two brothers, Ray Taylor, Camden, Ohio, and Gene Taylor, Middletown, Ohio; and one sister, Allene Thomas, Dearborn Heights, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn in 1979; two brothers, Robert and Kenneth; and four sisters, Dorothy, Rita, Vera and Thelma.

Private funeral services will be held with burial in Restlawn cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids.

Memorials in James' name can be made directly to the American Red Cross - Haitian Relief.

Rose Kurzynski

Rose M. Kurzynski age 89 formerly of 1465 Soo Marie Ave in Stevens Point passed away Wednesday evening at North Crest Assisted Living, with her family at her side and under the care of Ministry Home Hospice Care.

A mass of Christian burial for Rose will be at 10: 00 AM Saturday February 13, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. James Kurzynski will officiate. Burial will be at the St Joseph cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 4: 00 – 8: 00 PM on Friday at Shuda Funeral Chapel, and again Saturday at the church from 9: 00 AM until the time of services. The American Legion Post #6 of which Rose was a member for 38 years will have a ritual in her honor at 6: 30 PM Friday at the funeral chapel followed at 7: 00 PM in which the General Rosary will be prayed. Rose was born January 13, 1921 in Ladysmith, the daughter of Anton and Anna (Weska) Marcis who immigrated to the United States from Poland. Rose attended schools in Marathon County and later moved to Chicago. She married Alois Lloyd Kurzynski on August 16, 1941 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Stevens Point. After marriage the couple settled in this area and she resided at her Soo Marie address for 59 years. Rose was known for her gift of serving others. She was employed by the Hot Fish Shop, The American Legion Post #6, and was a food preparer for UWSP Food Service until retiring in 1992. After retirement Rose volunteered at the Lincoln Center. She loved ceramics, quilting, and her beautiful garden. Rose had a special love for her family.

She is survived by her eight children: five daughters: Bernadine Bowman, Weston; Mary Ann (Mike) Snider, Stratford; Jean (Gary) Steele, Amherst; Doris (Ron) Sonnenberg, Amherst; Joyce (Darol) Dombrowski, Amherst. Three sons: Gerald (Sharon) Kurzynski, Amherst; Richard (Donna) Kurzynski, Schaumburg, IL; Jeffrey (Margaret) Kurzynski, Plover. 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Two brothers: Carl (Hilda) Marcis, Wausau and Ted (Marion) Marcis, Schofield. Two sisters: Ann Bajo, Stevens Point and Helen (Peter) Muto, River Falls. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Alois in 1983, her brother Tony, two sisters Wanda and Stephanie, and two daughters who died at birth.

The family wishes to thank Ministry Hospice and North Crest for the great care they provided.

Mavis Peterson

Mavis 'Midge' Peterson Mavis "Midge" Peterson, 86, formerly of 3916 Simonis St., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, under the care of Ministry Home Hospice at Harmony Living Center.

Mavis was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Thief River Falls, Minn., the daughter of Carl and Mathilda (Stokke) Olson. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, she moved to California where she was a telegraph operator during World War II. She returned to Thief River Falls and married Wallace Peterson on Jan. 13, 1946. They moved to the Stevens Point area. He passed away March 24, 1963. Then she married Dwaine "Babe" Peterson on May 15, 1964, at Trinity Lutheran Church. He passed away Aug. 17, 1985.

Mavis was a homemaker for many years and also worked at the Stevens Point Public Library along with working in retail. Mavis had an unconditional love for her family and friends, she treasured all the time they spent together. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a past member of the Moose Lodge of Stevens Point, and she did volunteer work at the Senior Center.

Mavis is survived by her children, Bonnie (Gordon) Cisewski, Janesville, Vicki (Johnny) Drapes, Plover, and Terry (Jody) Peterson, Stevens Point; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Mosley, Jason Drapes, Jody Wojcik, Brett, Megan, Hannah and Lauren Peterson; four great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Sue (Dick) Clussman, Stevens Point, and Cheryl Carpenter, Belvidere, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, three brothers, three sisters and one stepson. Funeral services for Mavis will be at 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Steven Olson will officiate. Burial will be at Restlawn cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 9: 30 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mavis' name are appreciated for Ministry Home Hospice Care.

"The family would like to thank the staff at Harmony Assisted Living and the staff at Ministry Care Hospice for all the care and concern shown to Mom and our family. It was greatly appreciated."

Erwin E. Cisewski

Erwin E. Cisewski age 72, of the Town of Hull passed away Wednesday afternoon February 17, 2010 at his home. Funeral services for Erwin will be held at 11: 00 AM Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church (Torun) . Rev. Wesley Janowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Parish cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 9: 30 AM on Monday until the time of services at the church.

Erwin was born May 24, 1937 in Stevens Point, the son of Phillip and Sally (Szablewski) Cisewski. He attended local schools then entered the United States Army on November 9, 1960 in Milwaukee. He was a rifle markesman and was honorably discharged December 7, 1966 at Ft. Hood, TX. He returned to the area and was married to Clara Feltz. Erwin worked for several farms in the area including Firkus and Okray Farms. He sold produce on the city square and raised up to 25 red deer on his home property.

He is survived by his four children: James Cisewski, Mosinee; Joseph (Ann) Cisewski, Amherst; Bonnie (Russell) Krayecki, Sharon; Carl (Mary Margaret Mmers) Cisewski, Stevens Point. 8 grandchildren: Joshua, Shayna, Noah Cisewski; Brianna, Rebecca, Brandan, Bethany Krayecki; Jesse Cisewski. 12 brothers and sisters: Florence (Benedict) Waldoch, Stevens Point; Patsy Filipiak, Junction City; Hedwig "Hattie" (Leo) Levandowski, Mosinee; Richard Cisewski; Kenneth (Agnes) Cisewski; Albin (Grace) Cisewski; Harry (Ann) Cisewski; Jane (Tony) Rucinski; Eugene (Karen) Cisewski; Barney Cisewski; Clarence (Jackie) Cisewski; Cathy (Kenneth) Grezenski , all of Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Arthur.

Tommie L. Schulz

Tommie L. Schulz, age 67 of 1902 Post Road passed away Friday morning February 19, 2010 at St. Michaels Hospital.

Per his wishes no funeral services will be held. Shuda Funeral Service & Crematory are assisting the family.

Tommie was born September 27, 1942 in Plymouth, the son of Waylon and Verna (Goldbeck) Schulz. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1960 and in 1976 earned his B.A. in Economics from UWSP He entered the United States Navy November 20, 1962 and served his country two separate duties and was honorably discharged on November 19, 1968 in Bainbridge, MD. While in service Tommie earned the Viet Nam service medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Tommie was a 20 year employee of the Point Brewery and later worked and retired from Sunrise Medical in 1993 due to health reasons. He was a member of the Plover Whiting Lions Club from 1977 - 1993 and served as president and tail twister. He served as union president at Point Brewery and as union steward at Joerns Sunrise. Tommie was secretary/treasurer for the junior classic and sportsman league. He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, softball, fishing. He was an avid Packer fan, UWSP Football and Team USA Softball follower.

Tommie is survived by his mother: Verna Goldbeck, Plymouth; two sons: Aaron and Paul Schulz, both of Stevens Point. Two brothers: Jerry, Plymouth; Randy, FL, and his sister Debbie, UT..

Esther Flees

Esther M. Flees, age 87 of 3349 Whiting Avenue went to her eternal glory. Saturday, February 20th at Care Partners, Stevens Point while under the care of Ministry Home Care and Hospice with her loving family by her side. Funeral services will be held at 11: 00am Wednesday at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Rosholt. Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel, Stevens Point and again from 10: 00am until time of service Wednesday at the church. Esther’s first cousin Rev. Chester Osowski will officiate, burial will be in the parish cemetery. A rosary will be prayed at 7PM Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Esther was born May 11, 1922 in the Town of New Hope, a daughter of the late John and Eva (Bushman) Yenter. She attended local schools. She married Joseph Flees October 21, 1939 at St. Adalbert Catholic Church. The couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. The couple farmed on County Road OO Rosholt until 1988. They then moved to 3360 Evergreen Dr. Rosholt and have spent the last two and a half years at Care Partners in Stevens Point

Esther was a member of the Saint Adalbert Rosary Society. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing, family parties, dancing and genealogy and spending time with her grandchildren. Esther also enjoyed crocheting afghans for her children, grandchildren and church events.

Survivors include her husband Joseph-Stevens Point, ten daughters: Dorothy (Dan) Kropidlowski, Rosholt, Toni (Jay) Magnuson, Plymouth, MN, Ramona (Ray) Biadasz, Rosholt, Bonnie Zietlow, Pewaukee, Diane (Len) Cychosz, Custer, Marian (Ralph) Gagas, Custer, Elaine (Larry) Gagas, Rosholt, Cindy (Chris) Bestul, Cleveland, WI, Esther (Joe) Retzer, Brooklyn Park, MN and Joie (David) Flees, Lauderman, Austin, TX; three sons: Eugene (special friend Connie) Flees, Osceola, IA, James (Barbara) Flees, Bloomington, MN and Ralph (Kris) Flees-Savage, MN; two younger brothers: John (Gladys) Yenter-Rosholt and Casimir Yenter, Stevens Point; 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Esther was preceded in death by three sisters: Angeline Lepak, Rose Wiza and Annie Flees; son-in-law Tom Zietlow and great granddaughter Tracy Suchowski.

Esther’s family would like to give a special thank you to hospice and the staff at Care Partners for the gracious and wonderful care they provided.

Mary Ann Laszewski

Mary Ann Laszewski, age 82 of 3677 County Road O in Junction City passed away February 21, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield.

A memorial service will be held for Mary Ann at 4: 00 PM Wednesday February 24, 2010 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses: 3600 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. Gary Fenn will officiate. Burial will be at Des Pines cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 3: 00 PM Wednesday until the time of services at the Kingdom Hall.

Mary Ann was born January 4, 1928 in Milladore, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Peysar) Krummel. She grew up in Milladore and attended local schools. Mary Ann married Stanley Laszewski Sr on May 15, 1946. The couple settled in Junction City where they farmed. They were co-owners of Clover Valley Farms Inc. until retirement. Mary Ann was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation for over 63 years. She enjoyed flower gardening, feeding and watching her hummingbirds, traveling, craft shows and loved spending time with family.

Two sons survive Mary Ann: Stanley Jr (Connie) Laszewski; Michael Laszewski, both of Junction City. One daughter: Darlene “Dolly” Stranz (Patrick Arendt) , Rudolph. Five grandchildren: Amanda (Tom) Prellwitz, Andrew Laszewski, Amber Melk, Chelsea Stranz, and Brittany Stranz. Two great grandchildren: Taylor and Cameron Melk. One sister: Martha Fuch. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley in 1996, one son Jerome, 3 brothers: Frank, Edward, and Robert Krummel; one sister Rose Laszewski.

Leonard "Len" Swift

Leonard "Len" Swift, age 82 of Stevens Point unexpectedly went to his final resting place on February 25, 2010 at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.

A mass of christian burial for Leonard will be at 10: 30 AM on Monday March 1, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Al Burkhardt will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at King National cemetery in the Spring. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 5: 00 - 8: 00 PM Sunday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel, and again Monday morning from 9: 30 -10: 15 at the church. A general rosary will be prayed at 6: 30 Sunday evening at the funeral chapel. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in his name for the Portage County Public Library and St Joseph Church.

Leonard was born August 29, 1927 in Waukesha, the son of James and Ruth (Anthes) Swift. He entered the United States Navy on July 23, 1945 in Milwaukee. He earned the World War Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 27, 1948. Leonard married Imogene R. Sanders on October 7, 1950. He graduated from St. Norbert College in 1952. Leonard was active in the Army R.O.T.C. while in college and after until 1974. Leonard was a teacher for a number of years until he became the Library Director of the Portage County Public Library for 17 years until his retirement.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Imogene. their six children: Jean Marie Swift (Kevin Boynton) , Rothschild; Mary Kaye (Donald) Ernest, Mequon; Michael (Leslie) Swift, West Bend; James (Ann Marie) Swift, Milwaukee; Patricia Ann (John) Schmitz, Necedah; Carol Lynn (James) Schelke, VA. 12 grandchildren: Matthew and James Stautz, Darcy (Robert) Borelli, Michael (Malou) Ernest, Samantha (Patrick Henderson) Ernest; Christopher Ernest, Dustin and Derek Swift, Jeffery and Peter Swift, Patrick-Michael Schelke, and Jessica Schmitz. Seven great grandchildren. Three brothers: Thomas Swift and John Swift, both of Milwaukee. William (Karin) Swift, Sussex. Three sisters: Joanne Boyle, Kenosha; Kate Swift, Milwaukee; Sandra (Charles) McLester, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Phillip and Ernest. Two sisters: Rosalie and Donna.

Felix J. Garski

Felix J. Garski Jr, age 76 of 10387 E. Tree Lake Road in Rosholt passed away Wednesday evening at his home with his family at his side, and under the care of Ministry Home Hospice.

A mass of Christian burial for Felix will be at 11: 00 AM Saturday March 6, 2010 at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Rosholt. Rev. Marcin Mankowski will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at the parish cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 4: 00 - 8: 00 PM Friday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. The American Legion Post #509 Rosholt of which Felix was a member, will have a ritual at 6: 30 PM and the General Rosary will be prayed at 7: 00 PM, both Friday evening at the funeral chapel. Visitation will also be on Saturday at the church from 10: 00 AM until the time of services.

Felix was born November 29, 1933 in Stevens Point, the son of Felix and Clara (Koback) Garski. He attended local schools and later married Delores Singer on October 1, 1955 at St. Mary's Catholic Church- Torun. He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 23, 1956, in Milwaukee. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged on July 22, 1958, at Fort Lewis, Wash. The couple settled in Stevens Point, and later moved to the Rosholt area. Felix owned and operated Garski Refrigeration while also working at Foremost Foods, until retirement in 1991. Felix enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards, and spending with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Delores; their four children: Lonnie Garski, Stevens Point; Randall Garski, Rosholt; Russell (Anita) Garski, Rosholt; Karen (Chuck) Zdroik, Rosholt. Seven grandchildren: Kelly, Nathan, Evan, Logan, Aubrey Garski; Kyle and Quin Zdroik. One great grandson: George Garski. Two sisters: Loretta (Norbert) Singer, Shantytown; Delores (Ray) Hoppa, Custer. Brother-in-law: Clarence Skierka, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jerome and one sister Gladys Skierka.

Conrad J. Kelley

Conrad J. Kelley, age 64, of Stevens Point, passed away Thursday March 10, 2011, at Saint Clare's Hospital, Weston, Wis., after a short illness. Funeral services for Conrad will be at 1: 00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at the Shuda Funeral Chapel, Stevens Point, Wis. Dwaine Habrat, pastoral associate at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Stevens Point, will officiate, and Deacon Bob Precourt of St. Paul Parish, Plainfield, will share a eulogy and lead a Memory-Sharing Time. Burial with military honors will be at Guardian Angel cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from noon Wednesday until the time of services at the Shuda Funeral Chapel.

Conrad was born January 21, 1947, in Wisconsin Rapids, the son of Stephen "Steve" and Eleanore (Guth) Kelley. As a child, he and his family moved to Kenosha where he graduated from high school. Conrad then attended University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point before entering the United States Air Force on Dec. 2, 1970, in Milwaukee. He served during Vietnam and was honorably discharged Sept. 1, 1972, from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, with the rank of sergeant.

After his military service, Conrad attended University of Wisconsin-Madison before graduating from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he also earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Media. He then moved to Stevens Point where for many years he worked as the Associate Director of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Telecommunications Department. While in that position, he became involved in two university-sponsored programs. The first was with native-American leaders, which deepened an enduring involvement in native-American culture and the lives of native-American friends. The second was with the university’s International Program. Ultimately, Conrad helped lead nearly a dozen study-abroad programs in such countries as China and Poland. Conrad retired from the University Telecommunications in 2007.

Conrad and Ethel loved to travel and camp together. He also enjoyed fishing and loved the great outdoors.

Conrad is survived by his wife Ethel. He is also survived by a daughter, Michelle, Green Bay; a grandson; two brothers, Ronald (Jeannie) Kelley, Stevens Point, and Marc Kelley, Kenosha; and a sister, Carol (Jerry) Pye, Kenosha. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pearl C. “Pearlie” LaBrie

Pearl, age 100, passed to the Lord’s eternal care on Thursday March 10, 2011 at St. Michael’s Hospital, Stevens Point, WI. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1410 Rogers St., Stevens Point on Monday, March 14th at 11: 30 am. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids. Reverend Steve Olson will officiate. Visitation will be from 10: 00 am until the time of services at the church. Shuda Funeral Service & Crematory of Stevens Point and Plover is assisting the family.

Pearl was born on August 6, 1910 in Rhinelander, WI to Charles and Celia (VonSecoulendt) Seraphin. Her mother died when Pearl was 21 months old. She then made her home with her father’s aunt and uncle, Jess and Henriettia Thiebert in Rice Lake, WI. She attended and graduated from a rural grade school in Dobie where she learned to speak English, as French was still spoken in her home. Prior to marriage, Pearl was a live-in home domestic worker and later worked for Abramson’s General Mercantile in Rice Lake.

She met her husband Gordon in Rice Lake and they were married there on August 10, 1928. They lived in Rice Lake until December of 1941 when they moved to Stevens Point. Pearl was a gifted homemaker, cook, baker and seamstress. For many years she also worked in retail sales. She managed the bakery at the UW-Stevens Point from 1962 until 1968 when she became an employee of the Copps Corporation, retiring in June 1980. Pearl was not one to boast or brag. She always cared about the life circumstances of others, extending kindness, hospitality and care where needed. Her homemade rolls and casseroles comforted many. Pearl found solace in her faith, valued family time, found special joy in her grandchildren, was a good neighbor and a loving friend to many. In her retirement years she found pleasure in crafting, ceramics, embroidery, making and sewing quilt blocks and visiting with others, especially her wonderful 30 year neighbors on Jefferson Street.

Pearl is survived by her sons Donald of Stevens Point, Richard (Meg) of Madison and daughter Bonnie (Donald) Wiczek of Stevens Point, 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, 2 nephews and her many friends at Whispering Pines. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon (1974) , daughter Arlene LaBrie Janis (2000) , brothers Charles Jr., Earl, and Claire Seraphine, half-siblings Merlyn, Celia, Dale and Milton Seraphin, her Thiebert family Jess and Henriettia and their children Louis, Egsore, Elmer, and Searl and Ida.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated in Pearl’s name to the Resident Activity Fund at Whispering Pines Assisted Living Home, 3380 Bridlewood Dr., Plover, WI 54467 or the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1410 Rogers St., Stevens Point, WI 54481.

Mother was a blending of patience, kindness and gentleness rolled into one. She was a quiet, private, faith filled strong woman. Pearl exemplified “holy” kindness, goodness and grace in how she saw and lived her life. We are thankful to have been a part of that special love.

The family extends its grateful thanks to the Whispering Pines Staff for their loving care and kindness to mother these past 5 years. Also, we thank Dr. Michael Schneeberger at Ministry Medical Center Clinic and to the Doctors and staff at St. Michaels Hospital.
