Russell M. Lundquist

Russell M. Lundquist, 77, passed away unexpectedly after being stricken on September 7, 2006. A Celebration of Life honoring Russ will be at Noon Monday Sept. 11, 2006 at the Stevens Point Country Club. A reception will be held from 11: 00 AM to the time of service Monday at the SPCC. Friends and family will also gather to pay respects from 5: 00 – 8: 00 PM Sunday the 10th at the Shuda Funeral Chapel.

Russ was born on April 2, 1929, in St. Peter Minnesota, to John Lundquist and Ruth (Olson) Lundquist. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, and served his country during the Korean War. He served as a sergeant in U.S. Army from Sept. 11, 1952 until his honorable discharge from Ft. George Mead, Maryland on Sept. 10, 1954. He earned the National Defense Service Medal as well as a Good Conduct Medal. Russ married the former Marjorie French in 1956. They have three children, Cindy, Cam and Mitch. A lifelong educator, Russ began his professional career as a Business Education teacher at P. J. Jacobs High School, eventually becoming a guidance counselor there. In 1968 he took a position as an admissions counselor at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point where he remained until retirement in 1990.

Russ was active in local politics, serving on the Portage County Board of Supervisors for 13 years during the 1970s and 80s and remained strongly attuned to political issues throughout his life. Russ was active in many athletic pursuits throughout his life, but is certainly best known through his many successes on the golf course. With numerous local tournament victories to his credit, including the Wisconsin River Country Club and Stevens Point Country Club Championship and seven official holes in one, Russ’s success was only eclipsed by his sheer tenacity of effort. His commitment to the game is legendary, and through his nearly 40 years as a member of the Stevens Point Country Club (including many on the SPCC Board of Directors) , Russ was an irrepressible fixture on the links. His persistence diminished little in his later years as he “shot his age” this past summer as he continued to play nearly daily. It’s unlikely that there’s another local resident who has logged as many rounds as Russ.

Despite Russ’s varied accomplishments, his greatest commitment was to his family. He was tireless in his generosity and rarely missed an opportunity to become engaged in the lives of others. Russ always made himself available for his family and could frequently be found helping his children and grandchildren on the tennis court and golf course or attending any number of school concerts and events. His unique insight, generosity, humor and thoughtfulness will be missed by all who knew him.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother (Roger Lundquist) . He is survived by Marge, his loving wife of 49 years, their three children Cindy (Jim) Matzinger of Madison, Cam (Judy) Lundquist, and Mitch (Jayne Carter) Lundquist of Madison. Russ had three grandchildren: Alissa and Tyler Matzinger of Madison, and Caitlin Lundquist of Stevens Point. Per Russ’s wishes, others will benefit from his tissue/organ donation. A memorial in lieu of flowers has been established in Russ' name for a UWSP Scholarship. Online condolences may be sent at www.shudafuneral.com

Carolyn Susan Riley

Carolyn Susan Riley, 59, of 1220 Eighth St., Plover, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at her home. She had been under the care of Ministry Home Care -- Hospice Services.

Susan was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Edgerton to R. Marcelle and Gertrude (Kienow) Pett. She graduated from Edgerton High School in 1965, then from UW-Platteville in 1969.

She was married to Michael Riley on June 19, 1976, in Edgerton. She taught mathematics at UW-Stevens Point for 35 years until her retirement in 2006.

Susan was a member of the Wisconsin Nicaraguan Partners, where she collected and shipped sunglasses for eye protection, and Partners of the Tomorrow Trail, where she was instrumental in the development of the bike trail and also was a committee member. She was an Operation Bootstrap volunteer and a Youth in College presenter at UWSP. She was an active member of Ministry Healthcare at St. Michael's Hospital cancer support group and of the Ocular Melanoma support group. Susan volunteered with the silent auction/memory flag sales for the American Cancer Society/Schierl Companies Walk/Run and was a member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church.

Susan is survived by her husband, Mike of Plover; one son, Kevin (Jenny) of Grafton; her mother, Gertrude Pett; one sister, Judy (Jim) Kennedy; mother- and father-in-law, Dewayne and Patricia Riley; brother- and sisters-in-law, Dan (Jan) Riley, Shannon (Sue) Riley, Kelly (Tom) Stavenes and Colleen (Steve) Sletten; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Susan took great pride in her yard and flower gardens. Be assured, "there will be no weeds in heaven!" Susan loved to travel, whether by air, train, car or bike. She logged hundreds of miles on Wisconsin bike trails with her friends, her cousin and her sister. In Susan's last eight months she celebrated living by visiting Florida (twice) , enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Columbia River in Oregon and visited Door County with Mike to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Most recently she traveled to Las Vegas, where she was able to attend the stage shows she loved. Susan has a long history of attending drum corps competition and just last Saturday was at Camp Randall stadium for DCI watching the Madison Scouts perform. Susan had looked forward to this for nearly a year, so another challenge met! What courage and stamina that took!

Susan's first and foremost goal was to attend the June wedding of Kevin and Jenny. With cancer the mountain ahead of her, Susan's determination and courage helped her reach the summit when she walked down the aisle with Kevin on June 24 and danced with him at the reception. That day will be remembered forever by all that were there.

Susan's friends -- what would she have done without them? Friends, neighbors and relatives from all over that Susan drew together in one form or another. The support she received is amazing! Scrap-booking; rides to doctor appointments; walking the dog; making her outfit for the wedding; hosting bridal showers; and of course shopping trips! True friends that e-mailed her, sent cards, friends that came day after day to help, to comfort her and to laugh.

The family would like to thank Beryl, Carol, Lori, Gerie and the staff of Ministry Home Care -- Hospice Services for their assistance and friendship that they provided to Susan and her family. You really made it all possible. Thank you to St. Michael's Hospital staff, Cancer Center, her friends in the Cancer Support Group and Twit Chiropractic for helping Susan fight her battle. Thank you to the Rev. Trempe and Sister Mary Ann and the congregation at St. Bronislava Catholic Church for their support.

And we can continue to fight the battle! Susan has one more event planned for all who can participate -- on Sept. 17 the Susan Riley Team will participate in the 2006 American Cancer Society/Team Schierl Companies/Walk/Run at Bukolt Park in honor of Susan and to support the research and work this group performs in the search for a cure. If you are able to join the team you can register online at www.acswalkrun.org (Susan Riley team) . Or you can offer your support by sponsoring a team member either online or in person or by purchasing a memory flag to "Flag Down Cancer."

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bronislava Catholic Church. The Rev. James Trempe will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may gather to share memories from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Shuda Plover Family Funeral Home in Plover and again from 9 a.m. to 9: 45 a.m. Monday at the church.
