Vicki L. Meronek

Vicki L. Meronek, 81, Water Street, Stevens Point, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at the Portage County Health Care Center.

A celebration of life service for Vicki will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Plover - Shuda Funeral Home in Plover. Dwaine Habrat will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services at the Plover funeral home. Burial will be in the spring at Guardian Angel cemetery. A memorial in lieu of flowers in her name for the Portage County Home is appreciated.

Vicki was born February 17, 1930 in Rosholt, the daughter of Amandus and Martha (Firkus) Retzke. She graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1948. Her marriage to Nicholas Meronek took place on September 21, 1951 at St. Peters Catholic Church. After their marriage the couple settled in Stevens Point. Vicki worked at Copps for over 20 years before her retirement in 1985. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, bingo, going out to eat, walking in her back yard, and visiting with friends, family and neighbors.

Vicki is survived by her children: Michael (Geri) Meronek, Florida; Sandra Meronek, Stevens Point; Mark (Ann) Meronek, Stevens Point; Matthew Meronek, Amherst. Five grandchildren: Krista (Jeff) Flisakowski, Nicole Meronek, Jennifer Meronek, Alex Meronek, Sonia Klauber. Two great grandchildren: Calleigh Flisakowski and Nicholas Klauber. Her sister Bernice Stroik and her brother Al Retzke. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nicholas in 1999, four sisters Gertie (Ray) Bronk; Therese Romanak, Sally (Norbert) Glodowski, Florence (Chester) Wachowiak. Four brothers: John, Victor, Ernest, Ben.

Gail M. Disher

Gail M. (Roberta) Disher, 63, of Stevens Point passed away on Friday, February 25th, 2011 at Harmony House, after a long battle with cancer.

There will be a celebration of Gails' life at the Shuda Funeral Home in Stevens Point on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011. The visitation will begin at 5: 00 p.m. and the memorial service at 6: 30.

Gail was born on January 11, 1948 in Monterey, California, the daughter of Charlotte and Frank Roberta. She attended schools in California. Before moving to Wisconsin, Gail shared a catering business in Los Angeles, California.

Gail was married to Thomas Niemi, who was the father of her only child Kim, and then later to Bruce Stein. In 1988, she married Stevens Point native Ltc. Gregory R. Disher. Gail and Greg enjoyed traveling, golfing, spending time with their friends and family and getting the most out of life. After Greg passed, Gail also enjoyed her volunteer work at Operation Bootstrap, and spending as much time as she could with her friends, her daughter and her granddaughters.

From 1987 to 2004, Gail was employed as the Education and Marketing Assistant at Ministry Saint Michael's Hospital where she met many of her enduring friends. She coordinated physician education and facilitated many CPR courses. Gail was also well known as a bartender in Stevens Point, working in many area restaurants, including: The Thirsty Whale, Gary Nations, The Hot Fish Shop, Michelle's and the Sky Club. Gail had a unique zest for life and walked to her own beat in a variety of shoes. She loved to make people smile with her quick wit and engaging laugh.

Gail is survived by her daughter, Kim (Scott) Dennis and her granddaughters, Hannah and Natalie of Greenville, Wisconsin. She is predeceased by her parents and her husband, Greg, who died in May 2008.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Gail Dishers’ name be given to Ministry Hospice to increase awareness and to advocate for the development of a local hospice home.

Her family wishes to thank the many people who shared in Gail’s life and have helped her along the way in her brave battle against cancer: Dr. Redding and the staff in the oncology department at the Marshfield Clinic., Ministry staff including Dr. Shittu, Dr. Lily, Dr. Fred, Dr. Barakeh, Dr. Rishi, and Dr. Onitilo., The wonderful staff in the oncology and radiation departments., All 2nd floor and 5th floor super nurses and CNA's., The competent ICU teams, the PT & RT departments and Spiritual Services. We are also grateful to the Ministry Hospice staff and nurses and the staff at Harmony House, who at the end, helped so very much.

Gail had such an optimistic outlook for life and much of her strength came from her many friends who lifted her spirits, especially her “Tuesday” visit. Thank you to all her close friends. Edwina (Walczak-Grote) Johnson

Edwina (Grote) Johnson age 81 of Stevens Point, who also lived in Wisconsin Rapids, passed away Saturday February 26, 2011 at her residence, Oakridge Senior Living in Stevens Point. Edwina passed away peacefully with family at her side, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

A mass of Christian burial for Edwina will be held at 10: 30 AM on Wednesday March 2, 2011 at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Rev. John Potaczek will officiate. Burial will be in the Guardian Angel cemetery. Friends and relatives will gather Tuesday March 1, 2011 to share memories from 4: 00 - 7: 00 PM at the Shuda Funeral Chapel - Stevens Point. A general rosary will be prayed at 6: 00 PM. There will also be a visitation at the Shuda Funeral Chapel Wednesday 9: 30 - 10: 15 AM.

Edwina was born December 31, 1929 in Stevens Point, the daughter of Edwin and Ida (Zagrzebski) Walczak. She graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1946, and began her career at the Wisconsin Telephone Company as an operator.

Edwina married Burton Grote on October 21, 1951 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The couple settled in Stevens Point and raised three children. Edwina was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Telephone Pioneers of America, and St. Stephen Church Choir. In 1981 Edwina retired from the telephone company as a service representative. Together they enjoyed camping, bowling, traveling and entertaining family and friends at their cottage on Rinehart Lake. Burton passed away in 1984.

Edwina married W.D. "Johnny" Johnson, formerly of Texas, on October 22, 1988. The couple loved their retirement years on the river in Wisconsin Rapids. They enjoyed their winter trips to South Padre Island, TX, tending to large gardens, Telephone Pioneer outings, celebrating holidays with her family, and entertaining friends at their home. In June of 2007 the couple moved to Oakridge Senior Living where the staff treated them like family.

Edwina is survived by her husband Johnny Johnson, Stevens Point; three children: Tom Grote, Atlanta, GA; Lori (Doug) Johnson, Wisconsin Rapids; Mike (Mendy) Grote, Stevens Point. Two grandchildren: Chace and Lexi Grote, Stevens Point. One brother Elmer (Mary Ann) Walczak, Stevens Point, her sister Louise Sager, Custer; and Brother-in-laws: Robert Moss, Stevens Point; Doyle (Barbara) Johnson, Galveston TX; and Lavert (Claire) Johnson, Abilene TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, her 1st husband Burton Grote, her sisters: Margaret Moss, Ramona Waldherr, and two infant sisters. Her brother-in-laws: Jerry Sager, Art Waldherr, and Edward Crossley.

Jerome B. Hafner

Jerome B. Hafner, 90, Stevens Point, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, under the care of Ministry Hospice at his home. A mass of christian burial for Jerome will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rev. George Thayilkuzhithottu will officiate. Burial with full military honors by Post # 6 will be at the Guardian Angel cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Shuda Funeral Service & Crematory of Stevens Point and Plover is assisting the family.

Jerome was born October 11, 1920 in Stevens Point the son of Ben and Laura (Long) Hafner. He attended Emerson and graduated from P.J.Jacobs High School. He entered the United States Army Air Force in September of 1942 at Ft. Sheridan, ILL. He was an Information Center Operator in Tampa, FL He served with the Air Force 551st Signal Warning Battalion in the Asiatic Theater and with the Southern Philippine Liberation Campaign. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, American Theater Medal. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946.

He married Lucille Janz on February 11, 1943 in Tampa, FL. The couple settled in Stevens Point after Jerome's service to his country. He worked at Peterson Oil Company, and was owner and operator of the Deep Rock Service Station for many years. He later worked as a bartender at the Hotel Whiting and Sky Club in Plover. Jerome was a member of the Portage County Historical Society and a 55 year member of the American Legion Post #6. A memorial in his name in lieu of flowers is being established for Ministry Hospice, the American Heart Association, and St Stanislaus Church.

Jerome is survived by his brother-in-law Ronald (Marcy) Janz; three nephews: Michaels Hafner, Hershel Janz, and Wesley Janz. Five Nieces: Laura Davis, Sharon Kadwil, Sandy Heikes, Kathy (Terry) Bescup, and Peggy Becker. He was also survived by many great nieces and nephews.

Stanley J. Literski

Stanley J. Literski, 88, of 2917 Jefferson St, Stevens Point, passed away March 4, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield, Wisconsin following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 8th at 10: 00 am at St. Joseph Catholic church in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, with the Rev Jerry Rebacz officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9: 00 am until the time of services. Burial will follow in the Guardian Angel cemetery. The Shuda Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Stanley’s name to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1709 Wyatt Avenue, Stevens Point, WI 54481, to be used for their outside flower gardens.

Stanley was born June 26, 1922, in Stockton, WI, the son of the late Casmir and Helen (Wysocki) Literski. He attended local schools and worked on his parents farm. On November 6, 1954 he married Helen (Wozniak) at St. Stanislaus Church. They raised two children and shared 53 years of marriage together before Helen’s passing on August 3, 2008. Stanley was a great caregiver to Helen for the last 5 years of her life making it possible for her to remain at home during her illness.

Stanley worked for the Soo Line Railroad for 30 years, along with working at Roberts Irrigation for several years. Stan loved fishing, hunting, playing cards and especially cooking and baking. One of Stan’s greatest pleasures was to be in the kitchen and share his creations with family and friends. His famous raisin cookies along with his pies were often requested by many. If you visited Stan, you most likely were treated with something he made, or left with something he grew in his garden. Stan was a natural at growing flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees, and would gladly give advice for anyone interested in gardening. He had a knack for carpentry work and could fix just about anything. He loved spending time with friends, family and the grandkids and made a point of attending school and sport functions of theirs. He was also a big Packer and Brewer fan. He was a member of St. Josephs Catholic church for many years.

Stanley is survived by his son, James (Bonnie) Literski, of Plover, a daughter, Linda (Jerry) Eichstaedt, of Appleton, and grandchildren, Shane and Stephanie Literski, and Drew and Gina Eichstaedt; also great-grandchildren, Gracie and Ellie Strand. Stanley is also survived by three brothers; Rudy (Helen) Literski, Leonard (Mary) Literski and Chet (Marian) Literski. He is also survived by five sisters; Eleanor (Pat) Iwanski, Dorothy (Ervin) Patoka, Annette (Robert) Molkentine, Gertrude (Clarence) Kedrowski and Grace (Bill) Galloway and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, one sister, Ruth (Clem) Palash and his parents.

On behalf of Stanley, the family would like to thank the First Responders that assisted him at his home and to the Staff at St. Joseph’s hospital in Marshfield for their compassionate care of him during his stay. We would also like to thank his special neighbors for clearing his snow, and helping him with other things when he needed it. You are very much appreciated for making his life easier.

Stan was a good father and husband who worked hard throughout his life. He enjoyed helping others with projects and was always willing to lend a hand. He loved to be active and enjoyed being outdoors and visiting with the neighbors. He was happiest when he was keeping busy, as he was not one to sit idle for long, and his family meant the world to him.

We love and will miss you dad. Thanks for the wonderful times, your love and care for mom, your hard work, and for always helping out when needed.

Bernice Lasecki

Bernice Lasecki age 94, formerly of the town of Stockton passed away Saturday morning March 5, 2011 at the Portage County Health Care Center in Stevens Point. She has resided at the county home for the past 2 1/2 years.

A mass of Christian burial for Bernice will be at 10: 30 AM on Thursday March 10, 2011 at St Mary Catholic Church in Custer. Rev. Rajen Anandan will officiate. Burial will be at the Guardian Angel cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 PM on Wednesday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point, and again from 9: 30 AM until the time of services Thursday at the church. Bernice was a lifelong member of the St. Stanislaus and St. Mary Rosary Societies, and they will combine with the general rosary to be prayed at 7: 00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Bernice was born August 14, 1916 in Custer, the daughter of Martin and Rose (Gosh) Kruzitski. She grew up on the family farm in Stockton. She attended Fancher schools and later married Casimer P. Lasecki on August 26, 1939 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The couple settled in the town of Stockton where they raised four children. Bernice worked at Copps for 35 years before retiring in 1981. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, going to casinos, playing cards and bingo, cooking, and family get-togethers. She also served as treasurer of the Stevens Point Recreation Department Senior Card Club for many years.

Bernice is survived by her husband of 71 years Casimer; their four children: Germaine (David) Zynda, Wausau; Marvin (Charlotte) Lasecki, Whiting; Conrad (Sharon) Lasecki, Terre Haute, IN; Sharon (Henry) Rozak, Mosinee. 13 grandchildren: Debra Siewert, Keith Zynda, Todd Zynda, Kim Lasecki, Cindy Ballinger, Mathew Lasecki, Martin Lasecki, Jeremy Lasecki, Wendi Lasecki, Amanda Lasecki, Amy Rozak, Claire Sandstrom, Jason Rozak, and 21 great grandchildren. Four sisters: Edwina Rzentkowski, Stevens Point; Gertrude Ksionsk, Stevens Point; Rose (John) Boursier, California; Jeannie (Richard) Daniels, Stevens Point. Her sister-in-law, Alice Kruzitski, Stevens Point. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Donald, her brothers Leonard and Jerome, her sister Loretta Britz and two infant brothers and two infant sisters.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Portage County Health Care Center for the kindness and care they showed their loved one.

Thomas A. Ostrowski

Thomas A. Ostrowski age 48 of Stevens Point passed away unexpectedly on Thursday March 3, 2011 at his home in Stevens Point.

Tom was born February 7, 1963 in Stevens Point, the son of Henry and Marlene (Shuda) Ostrowski. He attended Stevens Point Schools, and was employed in the area in farming, logging, and bridge construction. He spent countless hours fishing, hunting, logging, picking berries and mushrooms, sharing these times with his daughters. Tom found great peace being in the country and from the companionship of his dog. His family would like to thank all those who were part of his journey through life.

Tom is survived by his two daughters: Erin Ostrowski, Amherst and Carmen Ostrowski, Stevens Point. His mother: Marlene Ostrowski, Stevens Point. Two sisters: Terri (David) Gilarski, Stevens Point and Sandra (Jeff) Hansen, Amherst. His niece Jenessa Gilarski and nephew Jacob Gilarski. He was preceded in death by his father Henry in 1997.

A prayer service and committal will take place at 1: 30 PM on Wednesday March 9, 2011 at Guardian Angel cemetery in Stevens Point. Shuda Funeral Service & Crematory of Stevens Point and Plover is assisting the family. An outdoor celebration in Tom's honor with a gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date.

Irving E. Nornberg

Irving E. Nornberg, 90, formerly of Rosholt, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at North Crest Assisted Living Facility under the care of Hospice - Ministry Health Care in Stevens Point. A Catholic mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday March 11th at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Rosholt, with Rev. Marcin Mankowski who will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of mass Friday at the church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A memorial in lieu of flowers for the Portage County Humane Society will be established. Shuda Funeral Service & Crematory of Stevens Point and Plover is assisting the family.

Irving was born February 18, 1921 in Stevens Point, the son of John Jr. “Jack” (Mary) Nornberg He attended Sacred Heart Parochial School in Polonia. Irving served in the US National Guard from 1938-39. He began his working career as a certified cheese maker for Souik Creamery in Polonia, then he started his own rural milk hauling business that covered the Polonia and Rosholt area, then he moved on to Bus Driving and Maintenance Chief at the Rosholt School District before his retirement in 1991. After retirement he continued to worked as a courier for Community First Bank.

Irving married Genevieve B. Oksiuta on September 24, 1945 in the village of Sharon on the farm of his brother-in-law Richard Kluck. He enjoyed pan fishing on local lakes, buying and selling motorized vehicles, woodworking, weekend polka dancing with family and friends and always had a passion for birds and animals. His latest new enjoyment, was watching boxing on TV. Most of all, Irving loved his family and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them.

Irving is survived by his wife Genevieve, their two children: Sandi (Tom) Omernik, Stevens Point and John (Elise) Nornberg, Plover. Two grandchildren: Kelly (Kyle) Magyera, Madison and Amy Omernik, Newport Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elmira Ostrowski, his brother Chester and grandchild Derek John Nornberg.

Herman C. Kiel

Herman C. Kiel age 78, of Plover passed away Sunday March 6, 2011 at St. Michaels Hospital. A celebration of life service for Herman will be held at Springville Warf, 1800 Post road Plover on Sunday 3/13/2011 from 2PM to 6 PM. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established for the Cancer Center of Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield. The family is being assisted by the Plover Funeral Home & Crematory.

Herman was born August 6, 1932 in the town of Dewey, the son of Theresa (Kawlewski) Kieliszewski. After attending college Herman began his career as a operating engineer in heavy construction and worked in that field for 40 years. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, from August 1949 until being honorably discharged in September 1952. Herman married Dixie L. Newby on March 1, 1954 at St. Peter Catholic Church. He was a member of the National Union of Operating Engineers # WI 139.

Herman is survived by his wife Dixie, and their two children: Randy (Ellen) Kiel, Madison; Robin (Greg) Nowak, New Richmond. Seven grandchildren: Andrea (Ken) Forslund, Spring, TX; Natilee Adrian, Roberts, WI; Dustin (Melanie) Nowak, River Falls; Ashlee (Korey) Kuehn, Sommerset; Amanda (Chris) Perkins, Fort Rucker, Alabama; Amy (Steve) Surrarrer, Madison; Kyle Kiel, Madison. Nine great grandchildren: Whitney, Olivia, Avery, and Chole Adrian; Rachel and Ethan Nowak; Bailey Kuehn; Ethan, Evelyn Perkins. His brother, Thomas Kieliszewski, Stevens Point and two sisters: Delores Hintz, Stevens Point and Janet Setness, Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his mother, two brothers and one sister.

Arlene D. Bosben

Arlene D. Bosben, age 90 of Plover, entered eternal life with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Whispering Pines Home in Plover under the care of Ministry Home Hospice. Funeral services for Arlene will be held at 11: 00 AM Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Shuda Funeral Home in Plover. Rev. Dee Webber will officiate. Visitation will be from 9: 30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Plover cemetery. The Plover American Legion Auxillary of which Arlene is a member will assist with services at the cemetery.

Arlene was born April 10, 1921 in Monticello, WI, the daughter of Jacob and Madaline (Lint) Disch. She married Duane C. Bosben on March 29, 1946 at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello. They settled in Albion, WI for a few years before buying a farm in the Juda area. They operated the farm for many years before moving to Janesville. Arlene worked in the Food Service Dept. of the Janesville Public Schools. Upon retirement in 1985, the couple moved to Plover in 1986 to be closer to their daughter, Madeline, and her family. Arlene enjoyed baking, reading, bird watching, and gardening – especially taking care of her flowers. She loved being with her family and visiting friends.

She and her husband are members of Springs United Methodist Church in Plover.

She is survived by her husband, Duane, Plover, their daughter, Madeline (Ted) Osenga, Plover. Two grandsons: Matt Osenga and Mike Osenga (special friend, Cory Ourada) all of Plover, One sister, Elsa Paulson, Janesville and two sister-in-laws: Nanette Disch, Manitowoc, and Doris Disch, Monticello, and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Madaline Disch and two brothers, Chester and Norman Disch.

Robert A. Kammer

Robert A. Kammer Jr, age 65 of Plover passed away June 29, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer since 2005, at the Rennes Health & Rehabilitation Center in Weston. Funeral services for Robert will be held at 10: 30 AM on Saturday July 9, 2011 at Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church in Stevens Point. Rev. Susan Gilbert Zencka will officiate. Burial will be at the Forest cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4: 00 - 6: 00 PM at the Shuda Funeral Chapel - Stevens Point and again on Saturday from 9: 30 AM - 10: 15 AM at the church.

Edmond S. Belke

Edmond S. Belke age 96, of Stevens Point passed away June 25, 2011 at St. Michaels Hospital. A mass of Christian burial for Mr. Belke will be held at 10: 30 AM on Friday July 1, 2011 at St. Stephen Catholic Church. Rev. William Menzel will officiate. Burial will be at the Guardian Angel cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5: 00 – 8: 00 PM at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point. The Knights of Columbus of which his son Jim is a member, will combine with the general rosary which will be prayed at 7: 00 PM. Thursday night at the chapel. Visitation will also be from 9: 30 AM until the time of services at St. Stephen Church on Friday.

Edmond was born November 13, 1914 in Stevens Point, the son of Emil and Julia (Borski) Belke. He graduated from Emerson High School in 1933 and later completed a University of Wisconsin-Madison engineering course and began working in the family business: Belke Lumber & Manufacturing Co. He married Regina “Jean” Jazdzewski on October 12, 1937 at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Rosholt. Edmond managed the family business for many years before suffering a stroke in 1967. He attended speech therapy at UWSP and was able to regain his speaking ability and eliminate the partial paralysis he suffered from.

He was involved in many community affairs including a three year term on the Stevens Point Planning and Zoning Commission. He also served on the Housing Appeal Board and the Police and Fire Commission. Edmond was also involved in the Boy Scouts serving as a committee member for Troop 90. He enjoyed fishing, watching baseball and football, supporting his children and grandchildren in their sporting activities.

Edmond is survived by his children: Marie (Bob) Weller, Kailua, HI; Chuck Belke, Wisconsin Rapids; James (Marcia) Belke, Stevens Point; Patricia (Ted) Hoffman, Woodland Park, CO; Betty (Nick) Prokop, Diamond Bar, Ca; Jude (Mike) Milano, Iola; John (Jacquelyn) Belke, Junction City; Ann Belke, Milwaukee. 21 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. One brother Eric Belke, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean in 1994, their daughter Edwina in 1981 and granddaughter Pamela in 1966.
