David H. Dix

David H. Dix passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at age 79. David Harold Dix was born on May 24, 1926, in Chicago, Ill. to the late John Adams Dix and Gertrude Janet (Kellman) Dix.

During World War II, David was accepted by the Naval ROTC and attended Purdue University and also attended the University of Virginia. During the Korean Conflict, David was drafted in 1950 to serve in the Army at Fort Bragg, N.C.

In 1952, in Columbia, S.C., David married the love of his life, Doris Bonner, always kidding that "she had tripped him up on the beach" (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and started a romance that would last almost 54 years.

From 1956 to 1966, David realized his dream of owning and operating a Guernsey dairy farm, which consistently produced Grade A milk; and was known fondly to his five children as the "Devil's Lake Farm."

Later becoming a gentleman farmer, he entered the business world as Sales Manager for Yellow Page Advertising for the L.M. Berry Company, and later as sales manager for United Tel Corp. in Monroe. Following retirement, he served as commissioner for the Baraboo Sanitary District No. 1, for 34 years.

David had been an Eagle Scout and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking the bluffs at Devil's Lake, especially with his family, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Doris Dix of Baraboo; two sons, Daniel Dix of Des Plaines, Ill. and John (Teri) Dix of Florence, S.C.; three daughters, Robin (Jeffrey) Cole of Baraboo, Marti Dix of Baraboo, and Janet (Matt) Soucek of Windsor; four grandchildren, Heather, Morgan, Hannah, and George; a brother, Richard (Donna) Dix of Racine; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A man of faith, David often pondered the whys and wherefores of life and organized religion. He enjoyed challenging others to defend their beliefs, including special friends, Pastor David Hutchens and Pastor Dan Gunderson of the Walnut Hill Bible Church. He lived the verse, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and loved The Lord's Prayer, which he recited often before departing this world for Heaven. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the Redlin Funeral Home, 401 Madison Ave. in Baraboo. Nedra D. Askey

PRAIRIE DU SAC - Nedra D. Askey, age 69, of Prairie du Sac, passed away Monday, March 20, 2006, the first day of spring, in the comfort of her home with her family members at her side. She was born on May 20, 1936 in Ithaca. N. Y. to Delmar and Betty (Manchester) Fink and moved to Monona Village in 1950. She was married on Aug. 26, 1956 to De Wayne Askey of Monona. Nedra graduated from Madison East High in 1954, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with an education major in 1959, and a master's degree in education in 1985. She stayed at home with her children Stephen Wayne, David Roy, and Marianne Elizabeth until pursuing a career in education after moving to Prairie du Sac in 1968.

After her family, education and support of environmental organizations, in particular the Baraboo Range, were her greatest loves. Nedra motivated numerous students through three decades of teaching science at the Sauk Prairie Middle School. Many students have fond memories of the work done by Nedra, with other environmentalists to have annual field trips to the Askey family farm. Nedra used puzzles, experiments, field trips, speakers, and faith in the student as inspiration for life accomplishments that many students may not have thought possible.

Nedra had a penchant for living life to the fullest, and approached hobbies with total dedication using them to inspire her children and grandchildren. Horses and gardening were her foremost hobbies, but she was very involved in basket weaving, photography, painting, and attending cultural events. Always the thrill seeker, while in her 50s Nedra traveled in Europe and Asia, went skydiving, parasailing, and bungee jumping. While in her 60s she participated in a multi-week hike deep into the Amazon in Bolivia.

Nedra loved being a grandmother and participating in the lives of her grandchildren, Nicholas and Michael (Steve), Jimmie and Jennifer (David and Marie of Crofton, Md., Sierra and Mitchel (Marianne and Brian Gilbertson of Spring Green) with field trips, experiments, art, horseback and buggy riding, and constant oversight of their progress through school and college.

Always looking to make lemonade when stuck with lemons, Nedra communicated positives that happened after getting pancreatic cancer. She felt privileged and amazed to see the support and dedication that her family and friends were capable of giving, the many letters and visits she received from former students telling her of the impact she had on their lives, the touching care she received from her oncologist, the celebration of her anniversary with her husband she called 'her rock,' and the opportunity to hold the hands with many to say goodbye. Her acceptance and courage through her battle with cancer stood as an example for us all.

In addition to her husband, children, and grandchildren, Nedra is survived by her sister, Gayle Lyke; her dear cousins, Roberta Prince, Caroline Otteson, Bob, Dick, and Debbie Manchester; her loving aunt, June Manchester; and many Askey family members in the area.

A wake will be held 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, March 23, and at 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Concordia United Methodist Church, 585 Fifth St., Prairie du Sac, with Pastor Jeff Virchow presiding. In lieu of flowers a contribution to the Nedra Askey Baraboo Range Environmental Sciences Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
