Gard, Ernest

COBB - Ernest G. Gard, age 92 of Cobb, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Bloomfield Manor following a long illness. Ernest was born on Aug. 23, 1910, in Ridgeway to Frank and Ethel (Chatt) Gard. He married the former Lauretta Wienkes of Highland on Jan. 31, 1939 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Highland. The couple farmed their entire married life on their farm north of Cobb. Ernest was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Iowa County Farm Bureau. He also served on the Cobb Grade School Board for many years. His greatest joys were farming and family. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting and 4-H events. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Scullion; and three brothers, Emerson, Clifford and Harold Gard. Ernest is survived by his wife, Lauretta of Cobb; two sons, Glen (Connie) Gard of Cobb and Rodney (Linda) Gard of Cobb; six grandchildren; Greg (Michelle) Gard of Madison, Garry (Sarah) Gard of Pardeeville, Jeff Gard of Sheboygan, Sheri (Kurt) Schaefer of Monroe, Denise Gard of Madison and Michael Gard of Madison; a great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Gard; a sister-in-law, Rosie Gard of Mineral Point; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at ST. PHILIP'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Highland. Fr. Kenneth J. Frisch will officiate with burial in St. Anthony's cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at the MCGUIRE-PETERSON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME, Highland, where a parish scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Tuesday after 10 a.m.

Goetzke, Glen H.

MAUSTON - Glen H. Goetzke, age 80, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, after a courageous battle with diabetes. He was born May 15, 1922, in Schofield, Wis. Glen was a Sergeant Major in the 776th Amphibious Assault Force during World War II. After serving in the military, Glen returned to Wis. and moved to Mauston. He worked for many years with his sister, Ad and her husband, John Hosig at Hosigs Retail Store. He met and married Lila Marie Bennett on Aug. 11, 1962, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Mauston. Glen and Lila were blessed with three children, Judith (Michael) Nicksic, Paul (Donna) Goetzke, and Ron (Jacquelyn) Goetzke. During his lifetime, Glen enjoyed many things and truly celebrated the life God gave him. He owned and operated Westside Shopper, a successful retail business which gave him the opportunity to work with the people in Mauston and surrounding areas. Glen spent countless hours working in and for the Mauston community. He served on Bethany Lutheran Churchs Board of Education, Parish Mens Club, and Board of Deacons. He was a faithful member of Bethany where he served as church custodian, usher, teacher, and church president. Along with all of his church commitments, Glen served as a Juneau County and Chamber of Commerce board member, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, an active Kiwanis member, and on several committees for the Department of Human Services. On May 4, 1995, Glen received the Woody Smith Memorial Award for Human Services. He also worked to provide encouragement and to develop leadership skills in young men in the Boy Scouts. For his many years of working with and for scouting, Glen was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest level of recognition possible in scouting. He loved to hunt, fish, and travel, especially with his family. Glen Goetzke, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother will be greatly missed. His grandchildren, Stephen and Katie Jo Nicksic (Judith), Nichole, Kayleigh, and Courtney Goetzke (Paul), and Noah and Natalie Goetzke (Ron), were the delight of his life. He spent many hours talking, laughing, and joking with, singing to, and snuggling all of them. Glen is survived by his wife, Lila; three children; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Robert (Ginny) Goetzke of Mankato, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Anna (Kamke) Goetzke; his first wife, Betty Meuret; his sisters, Verna, Violet (Ben) Welter, Evangeline (Paul) Amann, Joan (Roy) Peterson, and Adeline (John) Hosig; and his brothers, Reginald (Harriet), Roland (Marian), Faale (Mildred), and LaVern (Florence). Glens life was a gift from God. He now rests in Christs embrace. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at CRANDALLS FUNERAL HOME in Mauston. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. at BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH in Mauston.

Grady, Daniel C.

Gust, Harold R.

MADISON Harold R. Gust, age 90, died on Friday, February 7, 2003, at a local hospital. He was born in Verona, Wisconsin on March 3, 1912, to Gustav and Dora (Haberland) Gust. He graduated from Verona High School and Madison Business College. He married Lucille Geiger. Harold was employed by Gateway Transportation Company for 36 years. He was also a member of Midvale Community Lutheran Church. He is survived by a son Douglas Gust of Tucson, AZ; two daughters, Patricia (Tom) Kreis of Muscoda, Wis.; LuAnn (Bob) DeFever of Waunakee; seven grandchildren, Thomas (Karen) Kreis II of DeForest, Wis., Cynthia (Gary) BaDour of Madison, Brad Kreis of Naperville, IL, Darunee (Patrick) Smith of Tucson, AZ, Andrea Gust of Atlanta, GA, Kevin DeFever, Eric DeFever, and Ryan DeFever of Waunakee; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Karina, Keenan, and Kyra; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 1982; and three brothers, Burton, Clarence, and Hilmer. Funeral services will be held at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2003. The Rev. Blake Rohrer of Midvale Community Lutheran Church will officiate. Entombment will follow at Forest Hill Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Humlie, William Helland

STOUGHTON - William H. Humlie was born in Detroit, Mich., on Jan. 31, 1917. The oldest of seven children, he spent his early childhood in Brooklyn, NY and Luther Valley (rural Beloit), Wis. He attended the rural Fischer Elementary School and graduated from Orfordville High School. He began St. Olaf College, from there he was drafted in the Army. During WWII, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, Colmar and Ruhr campaigns. Bill returned to graduate with a Philosophy degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., with a degree in Philosophy. He went on to graduate from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained in to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1950. Bill faithfully served the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wilmington (Timbercreek and Zoar) Lutheran Church of Arnegard, ND; First Lutheran Church, Muskegon, Mich.; and Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal, Wis. Following a disabling accident in 1975, he continued to assist in various parishes in Southern Wisconsin. He leaves behind his wife, Alice M. (Petersen) of 54 years, Stoughton, Wis.; his children, Erik, Wisconsin, Leah Naess and husband, Fred, Colorado, Barth and wife, Carol, Minnesota, Claude and wife, Nataya, Florida and Karen, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Benjamin and Jillian Humlie, Minnesota. He is survived by his sisters, Betty Skinsnes, Louisiana, Beatrice Miller, Oregon, and Marian Pearson, Oregon. He is preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Lars Oscar and Petra Anderson; brothers, George (Japanese POW), the Rev. Peter, and Paul "This life is only the beginning, the continuing is yet to be." Services will be held at the SKAALEN HOME CHAPEL at 400 N. Morris Stoughton, Wis., on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Koza and the Rev. Robert Alley officiating. Visitation will be two hours before service. A private burial will be held at the Luther Valley Church cemetery in rural Beloit. Should you wish, a memorial may be made to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., or to the Wisconsin Brian Injury Association located in Wauwatosa, Wis. Bill was an energetic person who thrived on sharing the Gospel. He was an avid reader and writer, a Biblical scholar, dynamic speaker, and independent thinker. An early proponent of women in the ministry, he advocated equal rights for all people. Bill enjoyed playing the piano, church organ and in his earlier years wrote music. He enjoyed his volunteer work at Skaalen immensely, loved to listen to jazz and choral music, and was an avid golfer who in later years took great pleasure in following the Professional Tour. The family wishes to thank the Stoughton Community and the Skaalen Retirement Community for their patience and kindness over the years. He will be missed by his family and all he touched along the way.

Huntington, Ralph E.

DARLINGTON - Ralph E. Huntington, age 78, of Darlington, Wis., passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at the University Hospital in Madison, Wis. He was born on July 8, 1924, in Darlington, the son of Perle and Thelma Huntington. Ralph is survived by two daughters, Rosalie (Ron Kittleson) Huntington of New Glarus, Wis., Nancy (Pat) McCarten of Darlington; a brother, Harold (Diane) Huntington of rural Darlington; two brothers-in-law, Hans (Lorena) Geissbuhler, Rudy (Kathryn) Geissbuhler, all of Darlington; a sister-in-law, Betty Geissbuhler of Shullsburg, Wis.; a friend, Betty Legler of Belleville, Wis.; three grandchildren, Kris, Kathy, and Briana; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 12, 1982; and three sons, Jack in 1963, Dean in 1970 and Ted in 1990. Ralph was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Darlington. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the IMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST in Darlington, with Reverend Bill Kapp officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove cemetery in Darlington. There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Kuenzi, Mr. William Ernest

NEW GLARUS - Mr. William Ernest Kuenzi, age 82, of New Glarus, Wis., passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Monroe Clinic Hospital, Monroe. He was born June 20, 1920, at home in Argyle, the son of Ernest and Clara (Friedli) Kuenzi. He was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Palmer on March 21, 1941. Bill was an active lifelong member of the New Glarus business organization, and ethnic Swiss historical and singing community. He was a veteran of WWII. He was semi-retired having worked at the former Burgdorff Grocery, owned and operated New Glarus Lockers, worked at Stricklers Market, Federal Industries, the Bank of New Glarus, Anderson's Ben Franklin, the Swiss United Church of Christ and the New Glarus School District. William was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ, Swiss Church Choir, Stuessy-Kuenzi American Legion Post #141, New Glarus VFW, New Glarus Masonic Lodge #310, New Glarus Yodel Club and the Mannechor, Former New Glarus Village Board member and retired member of the New Glarus Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of New Glarus, Wis.; five sons, William (Eloise) Kuenzi of Blanchardville, Wis., Ron (Diane) Kuenzi of Imperial Beach, Calif., Wayne (Bonita) Kuenzi of Madison, Wis., Bruce (Betty) Kuenzi of Belleville, Wis., and Ed (Sue) Kuenzi of Monticello, Wis.; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy (Clarence) Marty, Elizabeth Henning, and Rosemary Flannery all of New Glarus; and a brother, Werner Kuenzi of Madison, Wis. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis in 1991; his parents; four brothers, Otto, Wilbert, Hardy and Robert; two sisters, Tillie and Bernice; and several brother and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the SWISS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, New Glarus, Wis. Pastors Tom Neilsen and Marlea Waber officiating with burial in the Paoli cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the ZENTER-BEAL FUNERAL HOME, 29 6th Avenue, New Glarus, Wis., and after 10 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Marotz, Martin

MADISON - Martin Marotz, age 84 died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in a local care center. He was born March 9, 1918, in Markesan, Wis., the son of Julius and Alma (Eichman) Marotz. Martin was a member of Eastside Evangelical Lutheran Church. On July 4, 1941, Martin was united in marriage with Irene Jahnke in Green Lake, Wis. Prior to living in Madison, they resided in Ripon, Wis. Survivors in addition to his wife, Irene include three sons, David Marotz of Homer, Neb., Larry (Pat) Marotz of Fitchburg and William (Janet) Marotz of West Bend; three daughters, Rosemary (Tom) Brunner of Verona, Cheryl and Joan Marotz both of Madison; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Jane) Marotz of Manitowoc; and a sister, Elvira Swalske of Orlando, Fla. Martin was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at EASTSIDE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2310 Independence Lane, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service. Matzke, J. Ervin "Jake"

BRODHEAD - J. Ervin "Jake" Matzke, age 71, of Brodhead, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2003. He was born on July 8, 1931, in Janesville, Wis., the son of Ervin and Minnie (Fluckiger) Matzke. Jake graduated from Brodhead High School in 1949, attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and graduated from Milton College, Milton, Wis. He was a Korean War Army Veteran. He started his career in Chicago in the banking business. He then worked for Dow Jones News Services as a sales manager, both in New York and San Francisco. Upon retirement, Jake moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. in 1994, returning to Brodhead in 1996. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Susan Matzke (David) Foulkes, Janesville; a step brother, William Main, Brodhead; a step sister, Jeanine (Michael) Grossman, San Demis, Calif.; three nephews, Thad Matzke, Marietta, Ga., Ronald (Jenna) Matzke, and Rob Matzke, both of Janesville; two nieces, Andrea Matzke (Brad Cownover), Washington D.C., and Kirstin (Patrick) Miller, Ft. Atkinson. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Charlotte; and a brother, Dr. Robert Matzke. Private family services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Brodhead, Wis., with the Reverend Dan Herman officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to Hospice Care Inc., Janesville, WI., or the Brodhead Congregational United Church of Christ.

Mickelson, Miles M.

MCFARLAND/DEERFIELD - Miles M. Mickelson, age 51, died unexpectedly at UW Hospital surrounded by his family on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003. He was born in Madison on Aug. 28, 1951, a son of the late Howard "Mickey" and Mary (Wulf) Mickelson. He was united in marriage to Pamela Strube on Aug. 18, 1972, at St. Paul's Liberty Lutheran Church in Deerfield. Miles retired as section chief from the State of Wisconsin Department of Commerce in 1998. He was also a manager at the Windsor Skelly/Marathon Truck Stop for 20 years. He was a founding member of the Dane County Chapter of Pheasants Forever, a lifetime member of the NRA, member of the National Republican Committee and party, and a member of Good Shepherd by the Lake Church. He was an avid Packer and Badger fan. He was an avid outdoorsman which included hunting, fishing, and trapping. Recently he enjoyed a black bear hunting trip in Northern Wisconsin. He was proud of and loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Pam of McFarland; two daughters, Cassandra (Donald) Johnson of Madison and Nichole Mickelson (fiance, Ryan Nuti) of Edgerton; a sister, Marla (David) Tofte of Deerfield; brother, Mel (Barbie) Mickelson of Terre Haute, Ind. He is further survived by his mother and father-in-law, Pat and Lyle Strube, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, many special friends and his favorite pets, Flash, Snickers, and Angel; and two sets of love birds. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at GOOD SHEPHERD BY THE LAKE, 1860 Hwy 51, Stoughton. The Rev. Thomas Petersen will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Liberty Lutheran cemetery, Deerfield. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS in Deerfield. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. Morgan, Dr. Paul K.

SAUK PRAIRIE - Dr. Paul K. Morgan, was born on Dec. 26, 1917, in Lodi, Wis., to Clara and Louis Morgan. He married the love of his life, Lucille May McElmurry on Feb. 19, 1944. He attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he met his life long friend, Dr. AD Anderson. He received his Bachelors of Science in 1941, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1943 from Marquette University. Paul was also Board Certified in Anesthesiology, completing his Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1955. Paul was a Veteran of World War II, being discharged in 1952 as a Captain. He was active in the Sauk Prairie community for many years as a member of the Sauk-Prairie Masons, the Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and the Boy Scouts. Paul practiced dentistry in the Sauk Prairie area for 35 years. He was the anesthesiologist at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital for 20 years and served as the Chief of Staff at the hospital from 1967 to 1968 and again in 1974 to 1975. He also served as a consultant to St. Claires Hospital, Baraboo, and Reedsburg Municipal Hospital, Reedsburg, during these years. Paul enjoyed the cottage at Witter Lake and gardening, taking pride in his tomatoes, "Irish" potatoes and roses, which he gave to "Mac" with much love. He enjoyed traveling throughout the US in his "Silver Bullet" Airstream. He loved Wisconsin football (Packers and Badgers) and walking through the woods with his good friend, Gordon Janney. Paul and Lucille had four children, Bonnie Morgan (Schlichtig), Rick Morgan, Ron Morgan, and Michael (Mickey) Morgan; 11 grandchildren, JP and Mark Schlichtig, Ryan, Miranda, Aaron, Katie, Alan, Sean, Erin, Kevin and Cory Morgan. A memorial service to commemorate the life of Paul Morgan will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the CONCORDIA UNTIED METHODIST CHURCH, 585 5th St. Prairie du Sac, Wis. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the Bank of Prairie du Sac for the Tripp Memorial Library.

Older, Grenfell

MADISON/DODGEVILLE - Grenfell Older, age 90, of Madison, formerly of Dodgeville, died on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Oakwood Village in Madison, following a brief illness. Grenfell was born on Sept. 4, 1912, in Springfield, Ill., to Clifford D. and Kitty (Drake) Older. He married the former Jane Yost of Wilmette, Ill., on Sept. 4, 1937. The couple lived in Kenilworth, Ill., most of their married life where Grenfell first worked as a commercial artist and then as a Government Sales Manager for TRW Corporation. Upon retiring, Grenfell was able to once again pursue his true love of art. From 1972 until 1979 Grenfell and Jane owned and operated the Stone House Gallery near Dodgeville. In 1976, they built a house near the gallery and moved to the Dodgeville area. They moved into Dodgeville in 1985 and following Jane's death on Sept. 17, 1992, Grenfell moved to Madison. He was a member of the Dodgeville United Methodist Church and the Adult Fellowship. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Kitty Older; two sisters, Fern Lundberg and Betty Quayle; and two brothers, Drake and Clifford Older. Grenfell is survived by a daughter, Molly Older of Chicago; a son, Geoffrey (Connie) Older of Sarasota, Fla.; two grandsons, K.C. Older of Sarasota, Fla., and Dr. Jon (Dr. Penny) Older of Houlton, Maine; four grandchildren, Christina Marie Older and Mackenzie Clare, Elijah Jon and Gabriel Geoffrey Older as well as nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the DODGEVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH with Pastor Jean Bartlett officiating. Private family inurnment will be in East Side cemetery in Dodgeville. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Salvation Army, the Nature Conservancy or the Dodgeville United Methodist Church would be greatly appreciated. The LULLOFF-PETERSON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME, Dodgeville, is serving the family.

Ott, Patricia A.

ELROY - Patricia A. Ott, age 53, of Elroy died on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Jerry of Elroy; four sons, Jeff (Shelly) Ott of Elroy, John Ott of Groton, Conn., Jamie Ott of Wonewoc, and Jason (Nancy) Ott of Onalaska; two grandsons, Sean and Matthew; four brothers, Alan (Linda) Scott of Union Center, Richard (Diane) Scott of Elroy, Dennis (Barb) Scott of Reedsburg, and Raymond Scott of Beloit; two sisters, Cindy (Rodney) Schober of Beloit and Kathy (Bill) Clark of Reedsburg; a special sister-in-law, Ramona Bell of Wonewoc; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. in ST. PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, Wonewoc with Pastor Conrad Prell officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Wonewoc. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME in Wonewoc and again from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the church.
