Laura Freitag

Laura Freitag, age 53 of rural Oxford, Wisconsin passed peacefully from her earthly existence to assume her residence in Heaven with the Lord on Saturday, November 23, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Dennis Schueler officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Laura was born October 21, 1949 in Wausau, Wisconsin the daughter of Bernard and Valeria (Muenchow) Sternberg where she grew up and graduated from Wausau High School. She attended University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and attained her master’s degree in teaching. Her career took her to Portage, Wisconsin where she taught German for 21 years. In June of 1977 she married Donald Freitag in Portage. Laura started a reciprocal exchange of students between Portage and Gutersloh, Germany and started the girls volleyball program in Portage and coached the first team entrant to the state volleyball tournament. Her way of teaching endeared herself to her students and coworkers and she showed her love for the Lord in her actions. She always had a willing, helping hand for anyone who needed it and she treated others with love, kindness and respect knowing that we are all God’s children. Following retirement in 1994 she was able to devote even more time to church activities that she cherished and volunteered for almost everything that needed a person to help out. She was the treasurer of the Ladies Aid; served on the Board of Education; was a Team Bible Study chairperson; began a drive for an Every Member of the Congregation Visit; and was active with ProLife and promoting the rights of the unborn.

Laura will be missed dearly by her husband, Don; son, Paul (Rhonda) Freitag of Baraboo, Wisconsin; daughter, Mary Freitag of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; brother, Richard (Jane) Sternberg of Wausau, Wisconsin; sister, Sally (Douglas) Scheel of Wrightstown, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Abigail, Aaron, Benjamin, Max and Rachael and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. and on Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Leander "Lee" Hagen

Leander “Lee” Hagen, age 87 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Friday, November 22, 2002 at his residence with his caring family by his side.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells with Father Felix Oehrlein officiating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Lee was born December 17, 1914 in Athens, Wisconsin the son of William and Martha (Schuld) Hagen. In February of 1937 he married Ruth O’Neill in West Allis, Wisconsin. For many years Lee was a welder and he retired in 1980. He was very faithful to his church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He stayed busy with Christmas wreath sales for the K of C Scholarship and he also loved to fish.

Lee is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons, David (Barb) and Robert (Kathy) of Wisconsin Dells, William of Maryland, and Tom (Linda) of Mauston, Wisconsin; daughters, Nancy (James) Carter of Maryland, and Dorothy (Robert) Beghin, Theresa (Tony) Roter, and Louise (Gary) Mooney all of Wisconsin Dells; a brother, Raymond (Catherine) of New Berlin, Wisconsin; a sister, Loraine Hahn of West Allis, Wisconsin; 25 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter in law, Judy; sisters, Nora, Dorothy, Theresa and Jean and brothers, Leo and Theodore.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. with the rosary recited at 7:30 P.M. and on Tuesday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Grace Stickler

Grace Stickler, age 89 of Reedsburg, Wisconsin formerly of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Thursday, November 21, 2002 at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center with her family by her side.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 25, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Reedsburg with Reverend Joseph Corbin and Reverend Steven Keller co-officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery in Reedsburg.

Grace was born November 18, 1913 in Great Falls, Montana the daughter of William and Louise (Hirt) Heitman. She was married to Keith Stickler.

Grace is survived by a son, William of Wilmette, Illinois and daughters, Donna (Bernard) Fox of Spooner, Wisconsin, Karen (Michael) Knoble of Wisconsin Dells and JoAnn Stickler of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin and other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and sons, Keith and Kenneth.

Visitation will be held at Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Sunday, November 24, 2002 from 4 to 7 P.M. and on Monday from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. at the church.

Richard Luke

Richard Luke, age 43 of Reedsburg, Wisconsin died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at the Sauk County Health Care Center where he has been a resident for the past 27 years following an automobile accident when he was 17.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 22, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the Dells Delton United Methodist Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Steven A. Miller officiating. Burial will be at the Lake Delton Village cemetery.

Richard was born June 19, 1959 in Baraboo, Wisconsin the son of Roy and Phyllis (Bartels) Luke. He attended the Wisconsin Dells High School and enjoyed sports and hunting. Following his accident he was semi comatose and he fought a tremendous battle with all the related and numerous complications.

Richard is survived by his father, Roy Luke; a half brother, Gary (Leah) Luke of Mauston, Wisconsin; step nieces, Eliana and Lauryn; special aunt and uncle, Tom (Joanne) Luke of Lake Delton and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents and an aunt, Donna Graham.

Visitation will be held at Dells Delton United Methodist Church on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.

Special thank you to the staff and “extended family” at the Sauk County Health Care Center that helped care for Richard.

Margaret Sickenberger

Margaret Sickenberger, age 87 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Friday, November 8, 2002 at the Wisconsin Dells Health & Rehabilitation Center with her loving family by her side.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Dennis Schueler officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Margaret was born September 7, 1915 in Poskin, Wisconsin the daughter of Martin and Marie (Gralow) Thompson. In July of 1940 she married Karl Sickenberger in Stillwater, Minnesota. Among the duties of being a mother and raising a family, Margaret was an active member of Trinity Ladies Aid, she enjoyed bowling and singing activities.

Margaret will be missed dearly by her husband, Karl; sons, Edward (Mary) of Madison, Wisconsin, Dean (Jeaneen) of Emerald, Wisconsin and Martin (Barbara) of Poynette, Wisconsin; a daughter, Karla (Robert) Johnson of Madison; a brother, Gerhardt (Harriet) Thompson of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter, Herbert and Merlin; sons, Karl and Gary and a granddaughter, Shannon Chwala.

Richard DeBaere

Richard DeBaere, age 75 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Thursday, November 7, 2002 at St. Clare Meadows Nursing Home in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 11, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells with Father Felix Oehrlein officiating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Wisconsin Dells. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells.

Richard was born January 27, 1927 in Racine, Wisconsin the son of Frank and Emma (Stroobants) DeBaere. He graduated from high school in Oconto, Wisconsin in 1946. For the next 3 months he worked as a seaman on a Great Lakes rail car ferry. He entered the U.S. Army in September of 1946 and toured Japan. He returned to the states in 1948 and was employed by Nash Motors in Kenosha. He was called back to the military and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1951. In July of 1952 he married Delores Ziel in Menasha, Wisconsin. With his wife, Richard founded the Ryva Fishing Tackle Company in 1955. Later the R.D. DeBaere Import/Export Company dealing primarily with fishing tackle was started in 1973. This took him on many visits to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Richard is survived by his wife, Delores; sons, Dennis of Wisconsin Dells, Donald of Tennessee, David of Germany, Richard (Ellen) of Racine, Wisconsin and Daniel of Japan; a daughter, Barbara (John) DeBaere-Poppy of Portage, Wisconsin, Kathy (Gary) Jenkins of Racine and Nancy (Mike); brothers, Raymond (Alice) of Rhinelander, Wisconsin and Daniel (Betty) of South Carolina; stepbrothers, Jim (Gloria) Smith of Florida and Gordon (Carmen) Smith of Maine; stepsisters, Jane (Bob) Peterson of Arizona and Shirley (Larry) Heimes of Racine and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Gordon Smith; and sister, Marvalena.

Visitation will be held at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church on Monday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Robert Cook, Sr.

Robert L. Cook, Sr., age 84 of Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin died Sunday, October 13, 2002 at Hillview Health Care Center of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the Big Spring Congregational Church of rural Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin with Reverend Stuart Allen officiating. Burial will be at the Big Spring cemetery . Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells.

Robert was born January 3, 1918 in Springville Township, Adams County, Wisconsin the son of Ned and Jane (Stowe) Cook. In 1941 he married Arleen Lapp in Big Spring Congregational Church. He also enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in November of 1945. He furthered his education and earned his master’s degree serving for 25 years as a superintendent and the last nine years were at the North Crawford school district, retiring in 1980. Robert had been a member of the Rotary Club in Melrose, Wisconsin ; Gays Mills Lions Club; Crawford County A.R.C.; Wisconsin Retired Educators Association; WARSDA; WEAC-NEA; Prairie du Chien Methodist Church and American Legion Post 0308 in Gays Mills.

Robert is survived by his wife, Arleen; sons, Robert (Bernice) of Shorewood, Wisconsin and Bill (Michele) of Onalaska, Wisconsin; daughters, Christine Cook of Prairie du Chien, Carole (Mark) Russ of Denver, Colorado, Linda (James) Schroeder of Carpentersville, Illinois and Patricia Cook of Reno, Nevada; a brother, Norman (Vera) Cook of Grand Marsh, Wisconsin; a sister, Frances Day of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond; sisters, Edith and Laurice Heitman; and a grandson, Robert.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 from 5 to 8 P.M. and on Thursday, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Crawford County A.R.C.

Helen Piekarski

Helen Piekarski, age 85 of Lake Delton, Wisconsin died Friday, October 11, 2002 at the Wisconsin Dells Health & Rehabilitation Center of Wisconsin Dells where she has been a resident for 3 years.

Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Craig Wolfgram officiating. According to her wishes, Helen has been cremated.

Helen was born June 26, 1917 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin the daughter of William and Mamie (Borcher) Schultz and has lived here most of her life. In September of 1957 she married Gerald Piekarski in Cloquet, Minnesota. In the Dells area she operated the Charm Beauty Salon for 35 years retiring in June of 1985.

Helen will be missed dearly by her husband, Gerald; sons, James (Carol) Jax of Wendell, Idaho, William (Anna Mae) Jax of New Lisbon, Wisconsin and Gerald (Susan) Piekarski of Lake Delton; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Norman Schultz and sisters, Avis Schultz and Margaret Lewis.

The family wishes to thank the Wisconsin Dells Health & Rehabilitation Center and their nurses and aids and manager, John Ley for the wonderful care Helen received. Also thank you to Dr. Conley, Dr. Faylona and Dr. Westphal for all their services.

Visitation will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church of Wisconsin Dells on Saturday, October 19, 2002 from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.

Gertrude Anderson

Gertrude Anderson, age 82 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin formerly of Chicago, Illinois died Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at St. Clare Meadows of Baraboo, Wisconsin .

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at the Walnut Hill Bible Church in Baraboo with Reverend David Hutchens officiating. Following the services Gertrude will be cremated according to her wishes.

Gertrude was born November 9, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Kurt and Lucia (Nahser) Berger. In 1938 she married Raymond Poppenga and he preceded her in death in 1965. In 1982 she married Reginald Anderson and he preceded her in death in 1989. For many years Gertrude was a jewelry salesperson at Lebolt’s in Chicago . In 1990 she moved to Wisconsin Dells.

Gertrude is survived by a son, Raymond (Jill) Poppenga of Wisconsin Dells; a daughter, Marlene Cesaretti of Algonquin, Illinois; sisters, Dorothy Knoll of Chicago and Ann Kent of Tennessee; grandchildren, Denise Reed, Michelle Cesaretti, Ryan Poppenga, Janet (Wendall) Bare, Katherine (Terry) Marshall and Karen (Dean) Wimann and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brother, Karl Berger and a sister, Emmy.

Visitation will be held at the Walnut Hill Bible Church on Saturday from 12:00 Noon until the time of service at 2:00 P.M.

Beth Roney

Beth Roney, age 85 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Sunday, October 6, 2002 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Steven Keller officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Beth was born September 4, 1917 in Oxford, Wisconsin the daughter of Neal and Mildred (Cummings) Houselet. She graduated from Oxford High School and continued her education in elementary education. She taught for many years in rural country schools and completed her teaching career in the Wisconsin Dells School District . She married Harley Roney on June 1, 1940 . Beth was a very active member and officer of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter, the Literacy Council, a volunteer at the public library and a council member of the Presbyterian Church. Beth gave so much to her family, circle of friends and community. She will be deeply missed by all.

Beth is survived by her five daughters, Mary (Ken) Statz and Marcia (Dan) O’Donnell both of Waunakee, Wisconsin, Marge (Phil) Anderson of Wisconsin Dells, Martha (Pat) Stowers of Lake Forest, California and Marlene ( Gary ) Ovard of Quitman, Texas. “There were five of us and somehow she made each of us feel that we were her favorite.” Further survived by 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; a brother, Neal Houselet of Oxford, Wisconsin and a sister, Helen Ross of Palestine, Ohio . She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Maxine; and great grandson, Andrew Anderson.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 from 5 to 8 P.M. with a Prayer Service by the Order of Eastern Star at 7:30 P.M. and visitation held on Wednesday at the church from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.
