Chapman, R. Keith

VERONA - Dr. R. Keith "Chip" Chapman, age 90, died of a stroke on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at Meriter Hospital. He was born in Manitoba, Canada on Oct. 31, 1916, the son of Frank and Helen Chapman. Chip graduated from High School at Galt Collegiate Institute, where he was active in athletics. Chip received his B.S. degree in agriculture from the University of Guelph, where he and his brother, Ross, were active in social and sports activities and together they wrote the sports column for the college newspaper and illustrated the 1940 year book, which was the year that he graduated. While teaching entomology at the University, Chip met Emily "Betty" Cale. They were married on Aug. 22, 1942. Chip was accepted to the entomology program of the UW-Madison, where he received his Ph.D. in 1948. As a professor of entomology at the UW he specialized in "vegetable insects" and "insect transmission of plant diseases, " graduating about 75 students with Ph.D. degrees. He published more than 100 scientific papers and traveled extensively to conferences and research areas in France, China, Nepal, England and many Central and South American countries. Chip retired in July 1987. He has been active in the Golden K Kiwanis. He was an avid hunter, with annual trips to Wyoming and other trips to Maine, Canada and Alaska. Chip played handball and golf regularly. He and Betty would spend six weeks at the family cottage in Ontario every summer. Chip is survived by three children, Wayne (Vicki) of Leland, N.C., Linda (Dean) of Verona and Susan Murray of Park Falls; and two grandchildren, Christopher (in the U.S. Navy) and Megan Murray (at UW-LaCrosse). He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2003; two brothers, Ross and Douglas; and a sister, Helen Stockwell. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. MADISON - Charlotte Gullickson, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006. Hoesly, Gertrude Marie

NEW GLARUS - Gertrude Marie Hoesly, age 90, of New Glarus, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at the New Glarus Home. Gertrude was born on March 3, 1916, in Moscow Township, rural Blanchardville, the daughter of Christian J. and Gjertina (Hegdahl) Guldhaug. Gertrude graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1933 and graduated from Green County Normal. Gertrude taught at the Moscow, Rewey and Livingston Schools in Iowa County from 1935 until 1941. On June 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to the man of her life, Alvin Hoesly at the Old York Church, Blanchardville. During World War II, she was employed at the U.S. Army Post Exchange at Santa Rosa, Calif., while Alvin served in the U.S. Army. From 1945 to 1947, she was a bookkeeper at Engler's Store in New Glarus. Gertrude than graduated from Platteville State College with a teaching degree and taught in the New Glarus Public Schools for 19 years before retiring. Gertrude's many interests included arranging flowers, painting and other forms of art and sewing. She was a member of the New Glarus Baptist Bible Church and the Stuessy-Kuenzi American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her brother, Chris P. Guldhaug of Janesville; a sister-in-law, Violet Guldhaug of Mount Horeb; nephew, Robert (Judy) Bauman of Fairbanks, Alaska; nieces, Jane Vandervort of Madison and Mary (Michael) Tuhus of Atlanta, Ga.; great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin Hoesly; a brother, Harold Guldhaug; two sisters, Alice Guldhaug and Dorothy Guldhaug Bauman; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Guldhaug. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at the NEW GLARUS BAPTIST BIBLE CHURCH, 207 6th St., New Glarus. The Pastor Tom Schubring officiating with burial in the Old York cemetery, Blanchardville. Relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service on Monday at the NEW GLARUS BAPTIST BIBLE CHURCH. MADISON - Bertil W. Johnson, age 91, of Madison, formerly of Vermont Township, Dane County and Mount Horeb, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at the Ellen and Peter Johnson HospiceCare center. A full obituary will follow at a later date.

Lehman, Roland Victor

MADISON - Roland Victor Lehman, age 88, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, as the result of a stroke. He was born in Morgan County, Missouri, on Nov. 5, 1918, the fourth of eight children to Joseph and Bertha (Garber) Lehman. He graduated from Versailles High School in Missouri. Roland served in the Civilian Public Service during World War II, in Florida and Wisconsin. He attended Bluffton College, where he met Christine Burkhard. They married in 1949 and moved to Wisconsin the same year. For many years he was a dairy farmer in Dane County, and the Lehmans entertained many interesting people at their farm. He was a great admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright and had the opportunity to meet the famous architect, who told Roland that he was a "man of courage" for his pacifist convictions. Roland had the occasion to hunt with Aldo Leopold, himself not doing any shooting, but carrying Mr. Leopold's shotgun. After retiring from farming, he was an animal care technician for American Scientific Laboratories in Madison. He loved animals, appreciating their service to mankind. After retiring from ASL, he led a very active life traveling, studying and spending time with family and friends. He was a follower of Transcendental Meditation, which was an important part of his spiritual life. Roland was a strongly independent Democrat and enjoyed arguing either side of any social or political issue. He enjoyed and supported the Northeast Senior Coalition and the activities at Warner Park Recreation Center and through his last years competitively played dominoes and bingo and exercised daily at the Center. He was a faithful member of Sherman Avenue United Methodist Church. He was a kind man with a wicked sense of humor and the family will long remember the unusual Christmas presents from G.P. Roland. Following his deep respect for learning, Roland made arrangements to and has donated his body to the University of Wisconsin Anatomy Department. Roland is survived by four children, John (Colleen Akkerman) Lehman of Madison, Mary (Steve) Tilton of Madison, Margaret (Mike) Sullivan of Waterloo and Joseph (Jodi) Lehman of Jefferson City, Mo.; grandchildren, Katie and Tony (Lauren) Sullivan, Sarah Tilton, Keith Lehman and John and Joni Lehman; and brothers, Joseph, Quentin, Sam and Dan Lehman. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Warren and Herman Lehman; and sister, Mildred Hilty. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, at noon, with Pastor Jakes Voker officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Matzke, Kathryn L.

MONROE - Kathryn L. Matzke, age 90, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2006, at the New Glarus Home, New Glarus, er home for the last 10 years. Kathryn was the daughter of Guy (Jack) Taft and Ella Druck Taft, born in Clarno, Wis., on Sept. 24, 1916. She attended West Clarno School and told how she rode the train from Clarno to Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1934. On Jan. 1, 1938, Kathryn wed Willard Matzke in the Clarno Church parsonage. They farmed in Clarno Township from 1938 to 1964, and lived in Clarno from 1964 to 1974, moving to Monroe in 1974, however spending much of their time at the cottage in the Sawyer County Town of Barnes, north of Hayward. Willard passed away on Aug. 12, 1979, in Hayward. Kathryn and Willard have one son, Wendell Matzke of Oregon, Wis.; two grandchildren, Sheryl (Jim) Beyer of Brodhead and Daryl (Diane) Matzke of Prairie du Sac; and three great-grandchildren, David and Annie Beyer and Emily Matzke. Kathryn and Willard had many "Hired Men, " her "Boys" (and a couple of "Girls") that lived and worked with them during their farming years. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; and siblings, Evelyn Dinley, John L. Taft, Lawrence "Shorty" Taft, and Ruthella Simler; and very special brother-in-law, Bob Simler. She was also preceded by "Boys" Floyd Dinley, Kenneth Kleckner, John Drews; and a special "Girl" Phyllis Ault. The family wishes to extend a hearty thank you to Kathryn's extended family at New Glarus Home. Services are planned for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe. O'Donnell, Finnigan Oppegard

MADISON - A memorial service will be held to honor the brief, beautiful life of Finnigan Oppegard O'Donnell and to support his proud, grieving parents, Kathy Oppegard and David O'Donnell. He passed away on Monday, Dec. 11, 2006. The service will take place on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at the JAMES REEB UNITARIAN-UNIVERSALIST CHURCH, 2146 E. Johnson St., Madison. Palzkill, Thomas J.

MINERAL POINT - Thomas J. Palzkill, age 67, of Mineral Point, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at the Mineral Point Care Center after an extended illness. He was born in Mineral Point on Feb. 28, 1939, the son of Ernest and Aurelia (Knapp) Palzkill. He graduated from Mineral Point High School and later from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He farmed in the Mineral Point area until retiring in 1997 and moving to Mineral Point. He married Beatrice Straka in Montfort in 1965. He was a member of St Mary's-St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mineral Point where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 40 years, where he served as past Grand Knight. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved playing cards, especially cribbage with his wife. Tom is survived by his wife, Bea of Mineral Point; a brother, Bill (Marilyn) Palzkill of Huntley, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Mary Lynn Palzkill of West Bend; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Delores Brennan of Dodgeville, Tom and Betty Dolan of Dodgeville, Robert and Yvonne Straka of Reedsburg, Dorthy Ausse of Kenosha, Helen Straka of Montfort, and Bernadine Cook of Monfort; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry Palzkill; and brothers-in-law, Leroy Ausse, Leo Straka and Roscoe Cook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. MARY'S-ST. PAUL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mineral Point. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Scott, Orville "Bud"

STOUGHTON/ PINE BLUFF - Orville R. "Bud" Scott, age 80, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday, Dec. 11, 2006. Bud was born on Feb. 21, 1926, in Glenwood, Ontario, Canada, to George and Eliza (Edwards) Scott. The family of two sisters and six brothers lived in the Ohio/ Michigan area until Bud joined the Armed Services in 1944-1948. Bud proudly served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations with the 101st Airborne Division and 1st Infantry Division. Upon his return to the U.S., he worked and supported his mother and family in Michigan. In 1953, Bud met Mona (Osmundsen), they were married on Oct. 2, 1954. They lived in the Michigan/ Ohio area, where Linda and Susan were born. In 1957, they returned to the Madison area, where the family grew to include Michael, Cindy and Patrick. In 1966, Bud and Mona bought their home in Pine Bluff residing there for 40 years. Bud worked for the University Hospital in the Plant Engineering Department, where he was known as "Scotty." While at the UW he saw many changes from the old to the new hospital. He was one of the few who knew many nooks and crannies of the new facilities maze-like construction until his retirement, in 1987. Bud and Mona traveled throughout their 52 years of marriage, enjoying camping with children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law. In 1990, they traveled to Europe, where he was able to show Mona many of the places he had been during World War II. Their last trip was in June 2006, a beautiful Alaskan Cruise that had been a long time dream. Bud enjoyed spending time with his wife, working in his garden and yard, woodworking projects for family and friends, doing things for others, visiting with his family and in general he loved to "putter." Bud and Mona moved to Stoughton, in April 2005, where they lived close to their daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his children, Linda Donkle, in 1987, Susan, in 1956, and Michael, in 1957; sister; brothers and sister-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Mona; daughter, Cindy (Merlin) Kotajarvi; son, Patrick (Shirley) Scott of Texas; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Kara, Jessica (Brian) and Angela, Blake, Elizabeth (Chris), Keeley and Cienna, Alexis and Zoey, Emily (Ray) and Natalie, Jennifer (Matt), Tommy and Aurora. Wilke, Laverne J. "Butch"

WATERLOO - Laverne J. "Butch" Wilke, age 83, of Waterloo, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at Sienna Crest Assisted Living in Marshall, after a brief illness. He was born on Aug. 11, 1923, to Homer and Edna (Lemke) Wilke. He was a graduate of Waterloo High School. He married Donna Gorder on Dec. 5, 1942, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo. After graduation, he played a short stint of professional baseball in Green Bay until serving in the Navy during World War II. While serving, he was a member of the Great Lakes Naval Baseball Team, which defeated the Chicago White Sox. He also played ball during his deployment in Okinawa, winning the Island title. Upon returning home he played for Waterloo and Newville in the Central Wisconsin League and coached the Home Talent Baseball Team in Waterloo for 17 years. His jersey was retired at Fireman's Park in Waterloo. He was instrumental in getting the Home Talent League involved in the State Baseball Tournament. He has the honor of being on the "Wall of Fame" of the Madison Mallards Baseball Park for his contribution to Home Talent Baseball. He was a high school football referee for many years. Butch was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed following and supporting the sports teams in Waterloo and was especially proud of his granddaughters, Jacqui and Erica. He enjoyed pheasant hunting and ice fishing on the Madison lakes. Butch was a member of the Waterloo Fire Department for many years. He retired from the Waterloo Malt House, after being employed there most of his working years. After retirement, he and Donna spent much of their time at their place in Friendship. They had many good times on casino trips with their friends. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo, serving as an usher for many years. He is survived by his sons, Thomas (Vicki) Wilke of Sun Prairie and Jerry Wilke of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Jacqui (Todd) Martin and Erica (Jason) Crosby, both of Sun Prairie; four great-grandchildren, Michael and Sydney Martin and Kaitey and Brooke Crosby, all of Sun Prairie; sister, Delores White of Cambridge; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna, on March 15, 2001; and two brothers, Ken and Marvin. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, 11 a.m. at ST. PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, Waterloo, with the Rev. Robert Kosky officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. The family would appreciate memorials to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo or Waterloo Fire Department. Woodburn, Charles "Chuck"

WAUNAKEE/ WESTPORT - Charles "Chuck" Woodburn, age 79, of rural Waunakee passed away on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, in Madison, following a long struggle with leukemia. Chuck was born on Sept. 19, 1927, in Windsor, to Millard and Charlotte (Beck) Woodburn. He married Mary Ann Breuch on April 15, 1953 and they had celebrated 53 years of marriage. He worked as a heavy equipment mover for Reynolds Transfer and Storage Co. for 31 years, starting in 1958 and retiring in 1989. Chuck enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at the cottage. He also loved working in the garden and was definitely an outdoor person. He was an avid reader as well. Chuck lived all of his life in rural Waunakee and was a long time member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Westport. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, Richard (Connie) of Windsor and Jeffrey (Doris) of Burnsville, Minn.; five grandchildren, Carrie, Kurt, Tony, Rachel and Joel; a sister, Ruth (Gary) Ziegler of Mazomanie; two brothers, Donald (Ann) and Harold (Betty), both of Waunakee; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at 11 a.m. at ST. MARY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, in Westport. The Rev. Daniel Finnane will officiate. Bancroft, William J.

POYNETTE - William J. Bancroft, age 76, born May 4, 1932, flew to heaven on June 2, 2008...VFR. He died after a brief battle with cancer. Bill was a graduate of East High School in Madison, Wis. He attended UW-Madison were he met Genevieve "Gen" Richwaslski in chemistry class. Their first date was a 5 a.m. flight in his plane. Bill was a great pilot. His love and knowledge of planes and flying was his life legacy and passion. Bill and Gen spent their 54 years of marriage flying around the world in 1986, Cuba in the 50s, numerous trips to Alaska, all over the U.S. and Mexico - where they were married in 1954 and honeymooned landing on beaches in a commonwealth. Bill flew three flights for "Wings of Hope", two to Africa and one to Australia, delivering planes to missionary doctors. He recently received the Wright Brother's Master Pilots Award from the FAA for 50 years of safe flying. He was a member of the National Bonanza Society, Earth Rounder's, EAA and AOPA. Bill was a business owner for more than 50 years in Madison (Pump and Equipment Inc.) with his father John Bancroft and brother Jim Bancroft. He also farmed in Dekorra Township where they have an airstrip. Bill was the first manager of the Waunakee airport as well as the first house built at the west end of the airstrip. The last 10 years they wintered at the Eagle Roost Airpark at Aguila, Ariz., where they built a home and a hangar. He is survived by his wife, Gen; daughters, Ann Bancroft (Jim Bohling) of Portage and Sara (Paul Short) Bancroft-Short of Prairie du Sac; grandchildren, Dawson and William Bancroft-Short; a brother, M. James "Jim" (Sandy) Bancroft of Rio; sister-in-law, Adele Neri of Pinole, Calif.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Thompson; his father, John Bancroft; and an infant brother. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at COURTLAND UNITED METHODIST CHURCH located at the corner of G and DG, just south of Randolph in the Township of Courtland, Columbia County, with the Rev. Jeffrey Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in Courtland cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the PFLANZ MANTEY MENDRALA FUNERAL HOME in Poynette and on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. to the time of the of the service at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Draheim, Florence Emogene

RICHLAND CENTER - Florence Emogene Draheim, age 83, of Richland Center, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the Richland Hospital. She was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Richland Center to Eldon and Florence (Mead) Toney. She married Clifford Draheim on Aug. 7, 1945. They farmed together until 1971. Emogene was a long time and active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Richland Center where she served as past president of Women of the Church. She also was a volunteer for the Richland Center Hospital Auxiliary. Emogene enjoyed bowling, gardening, baking, and spending time with family and friends. Emogene is survived by her two sons, John (Jolene) Draheim of Davenport, Iowa and Charles (Deb) Draheim of Platteville; four grandchildren, Greg (Bobbi) Draheim of Davenport, Iowa, Mahyra (John) Carncross of Seattle, Wash., Ian Draheim of Champaign, Ill. and Holly Draheim of Davenport, Iowa; two sisters, Doretta Hansen of Richland Center and Joyce Shaw of Beloit; a brother, Allen (Jean) Toney of Muscoda; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Emogene is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Clifford; her parents; two brothers, Buford and Eldon; and four sisters, Marjorie, Glynnys, Beba and Lavonne. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH with Pastor Ken Halstead officiating. Burial will follow in the Sextonville cemetery. Friends may call at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL on Sunday, June 8, 2008, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. The Pratt Funeral Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.
