He studied forestry, and his twin brother studied engineering. In 1954, Jim was drafted. After training at Fort Smith, Ark., he was sent to Honolulu, Hawaii. Jim's twin was also stationed there, and their wives joined them. When Jim's tour of duty was over, he went back to Wisconsin and worked in the forestry division of the Department of Natural Resources. He was sent to be in charge of Walworth, Rock, and Kenosha counties. He later worked for Walworth Zoning and Planning office during which time he was instrumental in establishing a comprehensive zoning ordinance which included farmland preservation, green-spaces, groundwater protection and improved sanitation requirements. Much of his graduate work was based on what he was doing in Walworth County and he eventually was asked to head up the Farmland Preservation Unit for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. In 1991, Jim was a recipient of the Wisconsin Idea Award in Agriculture. He has served on many, many, committees over the years that were associated with forestry, zoning and planning, and was called on to give many speeches. Jim and Jan raised six children, a son and five daughters. When their son, Jimmy, was 19, he was killed when a drunk driver rammed head-on into the car he was riding in. Jimmy was a student at the Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Mich. Jim spent a lot of time in Madison appearing before the legislative speaking in favor of tougher laws on drunk driving. He also wrote many letters pleading for tougher drunk driving laws. In his free time, Jim enjoyed golfing, fishing in Canada with his friends, and all sports, especially hiking. He also operated two Christmas tree farms.
