Dunton, Arthur

FORT ATKINSON/ BRADENTON BEACH, FLA. - Arthur Dunton, born Sept. 24, 1924, in Pittsfield, Maine to Louise Brown and Arthur Dunton Sr. passed away at his home on Lake Koshkonong outside of Fort Atkinson on Wednesday, June 25, 2008. Arthur grew up in Pittsfield, Maine with his brother, Robert and mother, Louise, as his father had died prior to his birth. He attended Maine Central Institute, which he received a diploma from after he went into the Marines. He served in the Marines from 1942 to 1946. After his discharge, he settled in Baltimore, Md., where pursued a career in hotel management, while being a short-order cook. There he met Aileen "Lee" Frank, and they were married on May 31, 1949. They moved to Lanark, Ill., in 1950, then to Rockford and Loves Park, Ill., where they resided until they built their home on Lake Koshkonong in 1972. Arthur worked as a manufactures representative for Viking Chemical Company, Perolin Chemical Company, and Vortex which he retired from in 1987. He also started Dunton Sales Company, which sold boiler gaskets. After moving to Illinois, Arthur became an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He enjoyed the Bears/ Packers rivalry. Arthur was preceded by his wife, Aileen "Lee"; his mother, Louise; brother, Robert; and father, Arthur Sr. He is survived by his daughter, LouJean and her husband Dale Steenberg; his stepfather, Carl Cuthbert of Dexter, Maine.; his sister-in-law, Betty Frank of Illinois, and her children/ his nieces, Jean (John) Harris of New Zealand, Dana (Herb) Tautz of Illinois, and son/ nephew, Bill (Kristin) Frank of Illinois. A celebration of Arthur's life will be held at NORM'S HIDEAWAY outside of Fort Atkinson on Lake Koshkonong on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity in his name, the American Red Cross for the flood disaster relief fund; Badger Bank of Fort Atkinson, Trust Department for the Flood Relief Assistance Account; the National Kidney Foundation; American Cancer Society; or the American Heart Association. A special thanks goes to Tracy Cook, CNA and Carol Doughtery, RN of Rainbow Hospice. Tracy made his last months easier for him, and Carol his last days. Floyd, Elizabeth P. "Betty"

SUN PRAIRIE - Elizabeth P. "Betty" Floyd, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at HospiceCare, Fitchburg. She was born on June 20, 1923, in Rochester, Minn., the daughter of William and Matilda (Hohlstien) Falk. Betty was united in marriage to Herman Carl Floyd on June 27, 1969, in Galena, Ill. and they enjoyed more than 38 years of marriage. She managed a retirement home for many years in Sun Prairie. She is survived by her husband, Herman Carl Floyd of Sun Prairie; her children, Betty (William) Gehr of Lompoc, Calif., Ramona Barnum of Marshall, Pat (Kenny) Fast of Louisville, Ky., Patrick (Laurie) Bower of Hartland and Vincent Bower of Republic, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildre
n; sisters, Edna Furman and Mary (Ron) Custer both of Baraboo, and Barbara Tomlinson of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Mike (Mary) Falk of DeForest and Tom (Diane) Falk of Poynette; and nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William, Charles, James and Robert; sons, Michael Bower and Joseph Waldsmith; and great-grandson, Tom Rund. Gasper, Catherine Dorothy

SUN CITY, ARIZ./ SAUK CITY - Catherine Dorothy Gasper, of Sun City, Ariz., passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2008. She was born on Nov. 26, 1916, to John and Sofena (Alwin) Huber in Honey Creek Township, Sauk County. She graduated from Fernside Grade School and Prairie du Sac High School. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Nicholas Gasper. He passed away in 1980. Catherine lived in the Sauk City and Prairie du Sac area for 70 years, and was employed by Nedrebo's Formal Wear in Madison for 30 years. She was a member of St. Aloysius Parish and the Catholic Daughters. In 1985, Catherine moved to Sun City, where she met and married Harry Prokopow in 1990. He passed away in 1995. She is survived by two sons, Robert (Elaine Bauer) Gasper of Lone Rock, and John (Betty) Gasper of Glendale, Ariz.; brother, Lawrence (Lola) Huber of North Freedom; three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Beth) Gasper of Reedsburg, Mark Gasper of Gotham, and Sherill (Joel) Haverland of Potosi; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Bannon Wolf and Gertrude Crowell Franke; and great-grandchild, David Davis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008, at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Sauk City, with Father Jared Hood officiating. Burial will be in St. Aloysius cemetery. Meske, Allen R. "Al"

MCFARLAND - Allen R. "Al" Meske, age 53, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 12, 2008. Al was born on April 23, 1955, in Fort Atkinson, Wis., to Donald and Frances (Heger) Meske. Al married Dorothy in 1979. Al worked at EMS Industrial as a master rewinder for 31 years and was part of their close knit family of employees. Al was a dedicated employee, who started at an entry level position and worked his way to becoming a manager. Al was a Packers fan and was often troubled by what Brett Favre was going to do. Al enjoyed playing euchre, boating, and spending time with his family. Al had fast boats, fast cars, and lived for speed. If you never saw Al sitting in his wheelchair, you would have never known he was paralyzed
. Al's wheelchair never stopped him from meeting life's challenges and taught everyone who knew him, how to overcome our own limitations. Al is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two children, Chad (Bonnie) Meske and April (Dave) DeSerre; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Devin, Dylan and Mary; his mother, Frances Meske; two brothers, Gary (Sandy) Meske and Tim Meske; a sister, Betty Bennett; and numerous nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his father. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008. Private services will be held. Morgan, M.B. "Bud"

MADISON/ MIDDLETON - M.B. "Bud" Morgan, age 97, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2008. He was born on March 14, 1911, in Clyman, the son of Harry L. and Myrtle J. (Bunnell) Morgan. Bud was a Metropolitan Life Insurance Company representative for 30 years, retiring in 1972. In 1974, Bud and Ruth along with their son, Bob and daughter-in-law, Pat purchased the Farm Kitchen in Baraboo, which they operated for several years. He moved back to Middleton in 1980 and to Madison in 1997. Bud was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Middleton, Middleton Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star where he was recently honored for his 60 year membership as a Mason. Bud enjoyed boating, fishing, vacations up North, and just sitting on the beach with his family. He was a devoted family man and is survived by his loving wife of 78 years, Ruth; two daughters, Lois Potter of Janesville and Judy Morgan of Middleton; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Bud was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Morgan; daughter-in-law, Pat Morgan; and a son-in-law, Jim Potter. A Celebration of Bud's life, including Masonic services will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, at 4 p.m., on Saturday, July 19, 2008, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. He will be missed, but he will never be forgotten; he has left us with the memory of a life that gave to all of us so much humor, wisdom and joy.

Nees, Helen Patricia

RED LODGE, MONT. - Helen Patricia (Falstad) Nees passed away at 5:30 p.m. on July 8, 2008, surrounded by her family at the Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge, Mont. Helen was born on April 16, 1926, in Hannaford, N.D. to Hazel (Peterson) and Peder Falstad, and was the oldest of two children. She, along with her brother Peder Jr., grew up in Devils Lake, N.D., where their father owned an auto dealership. She graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1944. After graduating from high school, Helen moved to Chicago, Ill., to pursue her interest in art and design. With the experience gained through her studies in Chicago, she became an accomplished illustrator. She and Paul Nees, also from Devils Lake, N.D., were engaged while he was stationed in Chicago during his service in the Navy. After his tour of duty in the Pacific, Paul and Helen were married on Aug. 17, 1946, in Devils Lake where they would live on the Nees family farm in Webster until 1949. Helen and Paul moved to Middleton where he entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison and she worked as an illustrator and they started a family. Along with pursuing their careers, they enjoyed shared interests in black and white photography and painting. Upon graduation they transferred to Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa where Paul studied veterinary science and Helen cared for their two daughters. Helen and Paul moved back to Middleton where they raised their children Paula, Erica, Sara and Peder. With her interest in design Helen joined the staff at Pilgrim Place Furniture of Middleton as an interior decorator and continued her career until 1977 when Helen and Paul moved to Lewiston, N.Y. With the purchase of an historic home in Lewiston, Helen devoted her time to the refurbishing and renovation of this property. Along with her efforts in renovation she was also active in community and cultural organizations. Helen and Paul would live in Lewiston, N.Y., until their move to the East Rosebud Canyon, Roscoe, Mont., in 1989. Helen, Paul and their family enjoyed travels throughout the U.S. as well as to Jamaica, Belize and Europe, with extended stays in France and Italy. It was during a spring skiing vacation that they first visited Red Lodge, Mont. Daughters Sara and Erica would eventually move to the area followed by their brother Peder. During their many visits to the Red Lodge area Paul and Helen were introduced to the East Rosebud Canyon near Roscoe. This is where they found a site to build a house designed by Paul and built by their son, Peder, in 1990. It was here that Helen enjoyed designing and decorating the interior of their new home. With the addition of three grandchildren to the family, this home would become the center of many family gatherings and celebrations. Helen's creative interests continued with needle work, ceramics and paper arts, but above all she loved cooking and entertaining for family and friends. With the establishment of their home in the East Rosebud Canyon Helen and Paul would entertain a steady stream of friends. Noted for her generosity and graciousness Helen will be remembered as an exceptional hostess, dear friend and extraordinary mother and grandmother. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Paul, who died in March 2007; and survived by her daughters, Paula (Dr. Joe Wheaton) of Columbus, Ohio, Erica Hash (J.O. Hash) and Sara Holcomb (Dr. Harmon Holcomb III) of Roscoe, Mont.; son, Peder (Maren) of Roberts, Mont.; and three grandchildren, Anna Donohoe (Kyle Donohoe), Justin Hash and Jessica Nees. A memorial service for Helen Nees will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at the ROSCOE COMMUNITY CENTER, Roscoe, Mont. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Beartooth Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068, in the memory of Helen Nees. Schmelzer, Anna Hamilton-Fontana

HOPE, ARK. - Anna Marie Hamilton-Fontana-Schmelzer centered her life around family, friends and her Bible. She was a kind, devoted and giving wife, mother, daughter and friend; she had a special way of showing her love. She was born May 28, 1948, in Madison to David J. (deceased) and Mary M. Schmelzer. The loving spirit of our beloved went home to join her Savior on July 11, 2008. She was married to Benjamin Grant Hamilton (deceased) and out of that union four children were born: three daughters, LaDonna R. Hamilton-Stueart, LaShelle R. Hamilton, and LaToya R. Hamilton; and a son- Benjamin D. Hamilton who preceded her in death. She attended Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church at Hope, Ark. She was educated in Madison. She furthered her education and received a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse from University of Arkansas Community College at Hope, Ark., in 2003. As a strong, caring and positive individual she was never short of a perfect ideal and willingly gave her time wherever needed. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, painting and looking for bargains while shopping. Left to celebrate and cherish her life on this earth are her mother, Mary Schmelzer (David, deceased) of Madison; her daughters, LaDonna Hamilton-Stueart of Prescott, Ark., LaShelle Hamilton of Bartlett, Tenn., and LaToya Hamilton of Hot Springs, Ark.; a daughter-in-law, Denese Hamilton (Benjamin D., deceased) of Loganville, Georgia; three brothers, John Schmelzer (Maggie) and Gary Schmelzer (Connie) of Oregon, Wis., and Michael Schmelzer of Universal City, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Freddie Hamilton of Prescott, Ark. She also leaves behind her much beloved grandchildren, Joseph Stueart Jr., Luther Stueart, Alex Hamilton, Daloris Stueart, Rontarious Hamilton and NaShea' Goetzendanner, LaKeisha Hamilton, Jaleesa Hamilton; and a great-grandson, Darius Stueart. In addition, a host of nieces, nephews and friends are left to celebrate her memory. There will be a Memorial Service Thursday, July 17, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the COTHRAN CHAPEL CHRISTIAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 422 Greenlawn St., Prescott.

Smith, Phyllis Elaine Reiner

CAMBRIDGE - Phyllis Elaine Reiner Smith, age 85, of Cambridge, left her earthly body July 10, 2008, at her Pebblebrook Farm home where she was born, Jan. 15, 1923. Phyllis was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Jesse (Johnson) Reiner. She graduated from Cambridge Public Schools in 1941. She suspended her nurses' training at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Madison to marry Eugene Smith who was being sent to Europe during the war. At that time the school did not allow student nurses to be married . They were married in Neosha, Mo., on Aug. 8, 1943. Because of her interest in the field of medicine, she worked as a dental technician at Truax Field, a military air base in Madison. At age 50, and still raising children, and as a grandmother, Phyllis resumed her medical education. She received her registered nursing degree from the Madison Area Technical College, graduating first in her class. Phyllis worked at St. Mary's Hospitaland then the Edgerton Hospital. Phyllis was a member of the Oakland-Cambridge Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star in Cambridge. She was a life master of the American Contract Bridge League. Phyllis was a member of the Smithback Mother's Club. In her retirement years she enjoyed extensive travel. She opened her hay barn for weddings, church services, and barn dances. Everyone enjoyed the corn boils at the farm. She is survived by four sons, Glenn (Jane) of Cambridge, Gary (Judy) of Cambridge, Phillip of Edgerton, and Kent (Vicki) of Fort Atkinson; and two daughters, Beverly (Dennis) Rude of Friendship, and Dawn (John) Avery of Madison. Phyllis is survived by grandchildren, Robert Smith (Lindsay), Annessa (Scott) MacTaggert, Candy Remington, Jesse Rude (Michael), Joshua Jacobson, Samuel Rude, Kimberly Jacobson, Christopher Rude, Chelsey Smith, Wayne Rude and Oliver Smith. Phyllis has a great-grandchild, Klarissa MacTaggert. Also other family surviving Phyllis are sisters, Alice Quam of Deerfield, and Helen (Robert) Reed of Sturgeon Bay; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Reiner of Cambridge, Shirley Stork of Fort Atkinson, and Ruth (Dennise) Kluge of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. Her beloved husband, Eugene preceded Phyllis to eternal life, on Nov. 24, 1987. Other family preceding her included parents, Albert and Jessie Reiner; brother, Francis Reiner; sister, Hazel Nitsch; parents-in-law, Frank and Alvina Smith; daughter-in-law, Sue Smith; grandson-in-law, Will Remington; and brothers-in-law, Louis Nitsch, Claire Quam and Harold Stork. Visitation will be held
at NITARDY FUNERAL HOME, 208 N. Park St., in Cambridge from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008. Visitation will also be at the OAKLAND-CAMBRIDGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 313 E. Main St., Cambridge on Saturday, July 19, 2008, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., July 19, 2008, with a lunch to follow. Burial will follow the luncheon. The celebration of Phyllis' life will continue at the PEBBLE BROOK FARM HOMESTEAD throughout the afternoon and evening. Please bring your instruments, toys, games, and memories to share. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Oakland-Presbyterain Church or to the charity of one's choice.
Phyllis made every person feel they were the person she most wanted to be with. She was a master teacher through her everyday actions.

Waters, Mack

LAKE DELTON - Mack Waters, age 84, of rural Lake Delton, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at University Hospital in Madison. Mack was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Waterloo, Ala., the son of Robert and Mattie (Emerson) Waters. He attended schools in Mississippi and Tennessee, and graduated with a B.S. degree from Memphis State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in October 1942 and was honorably discharged in January 1946. In September 1950 he married Patricia Thompson in Kenosha. He was a salesman for Central Steel and Wire of Chicago for 34 years, retiring in 1986. Mack was a member of the Reedsburg United Methodist Church where he especially enjoyed the Bible study groups, and he was a member of the Colorado Carvers Club and also taught wood carving at MATC. Mack is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters, Marti (Kevin) Fults of Wisconsin Dells, Mary (Jeff) Griffin of Reedsburg, and Peggy (Gary) Stovich of West Allis; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert Macon Waters. Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the PICHA FUNERAL HOME in Lake Delton with the Rev. David Farina officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, Madison would be appreciated. Binius, Leona L.

MADISON / FOUNTAIN HILLS, ARIZ. - Leona L. Binius, age 90, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2008, in Fountain Hills, Ariz. She was born on May 1, 1918, in Middleton, to Henry and Rowena (Sneider) Grob. Leona married Herman Binius on April 3, 1937. She worked at the United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) in Madison for 20 years. Leona was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly (Martin) Smith of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; son, David (Shirley) Binius of St. Louis Park, Minn.; granddaughters, Kathy (David) Rocha of Gilbert, Ariz., Lauri (Bruce) Droster of Madison, Tracy (Jack) Bizot of Oak Park, Ill., and Lynda (John) Enright of St. Louis Park, Minn.; and great-grandchildren, David Rocha, Raymond and Samuel Bizot and Spencer and Jamie Enright. Birkholz, Loretta

JANESVILLE - Loretta Birkholz, 91, passed away July 15, 2008, at St. Elizabeth's Home in Janesville, where she had resided the past eight years after moving from Wilton where she had lived for 67 years. Loretta was a highly regarded resident of the Wilton area. She worked as a custodian at the Wilton Elementary school for 30 years. Loretta was born to William and Agnes McGarvey on April 7, 1917 in Wilton. At age two she moved to Butler where she attended grade school. In 1932 she moved back to Wilton with her family. She married Herman Birkholz on Nov. 8, 1941, at St. John's Catholic Church in Wilton. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1967. In 1945 Herman and Loretta purchased a home in the village of Wilton known as the Doctors house. Dr. Mills built it and practiced there for several years before selling it to Dr. Graves who practiced there for years. He sold it to Dr. LeRoy Abbott. After purchasing the house, many quests have stayed there while on the bike trail. Teachers would room and board with the Birkholz's. Loretta was known as the Wilton historian. Loretta was a faithful member of St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church of Wilton, and a proud member of the Wilton American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine (Harold) Knutson of Janesville; a son, Robert (Carol) Birkholz of Janesville; four grandchildren, Kent (April) Knutson of Orlando, Fla., Bret Knutson of Janesville, Ty Birkholz of LaCrosse and Jennifer (Joe) Nunn of Janesville; four great-grandchildren, Nichole Nunn, Brooke Nunn, Cole Knutson and Cloe Knutson; a brother, Jerome (Bev) McGarvery of Verona; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Floyd, and Edward; and two sisters, Joan and Marie. A Mass of Christian burial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008, 1 p.m. at ST. JOHN'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 504 Enderby Ave., Wilton. Father Gene Trainor will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call the church on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service. The Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Wilton is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials can be made to St. Elizabeth's Home. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and Sisters of St. Elizabeth's for the wonderful care given to Loretta over the past eight years.
God saw she was getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So he put his arm around her and whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched her gradually fade away. Although we loved her dearly, we could not bid her stay. A golden heart stopped beating. Hard working hands to rest. Through grace and faith God proved to us, That we are truly blest.
