James DeMerit

James A. “Jim” DeMerit, age 78 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 in the early morning at his residence after a long bout with cancer.

Memorial funeral services to celebrate Jim’s life will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at 7:30 P.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Craig Wolfgram officiating. According to his wishes Jim was cremated.

Jim was born December 29, 1924 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin the son of Samuel and Winifred (Olson) DeMerit. The family moved to Port Washington, Wisconsin in 1926, his father becoming the industrial arts teacher and coach of football, basketball and track at the high school. Athletics have filled a large part of Jim’s life. He earned eight letters in three sports at Port High and concluded his high school career by placing in both hurdle races and the shot put at state competition. He attended Michigan State on a football/track scholarship before enlisting in the Navy on December 28, 1942 . His travels in the service began at Farragut, Idaho for boot camp; San Francisco Naval Base for further training; the University of Chicago for Naval Signal School and finally in August of 1943 he was assigned to the U.S.S. Honolulu (Blue Goose) in San Francisco as a signalman recruit. Jim saw action in the South Pacific at Guadal Canal and all the way up the “slot” into the Philippines where his ship was hit by an enemy Japanese torpedo. The Honolulu returned to the East coast for repairs. Following his honorable discharge in January of 1946 he enrolled at LaCrosse State Teachers College . Again Jim’s athletic skills were recognized in football and track where he was the number 1 hurdler and shot putter, helping LaCrosse to win the state college meet. He began dating his future wife, Betsy Thomas, while they were attending a summer school camp at Eagle River in 1947. They were married and graduated with physical education degrees in 1949. Jims first job was boy’s activity director at the Y.M.C.A. in Ottumwa, Iowa . After two years they returned to Wisconsin and Jim worked as a house foreman at Badger Ordnance. In 1955 Jim began his 30 years of teaching and coaching for the Wisconsin Dells School District . During that time he assisted with football, coached baseball, volleyball, cross country and for 17 years was the track and field coach. Many of his athletes had state meet experience and teamwise, 4 came close to winning it all. The 1965 team finished in 3rd place and the 1968, 70 and 75 teams were runner up in 2nd place. How he enjoyed reminiscing with his former athletes about their accomplishments and remembering special times! Jim had many interests; he was an avid reader (especially WW II novels); delighted helping his three sons with projects around their homes and always had a love for the outdoors beginning as a young boy exploring the woods and streams near his family home. Those childhood adventures (his pet crow Andy, taking top honors) became favorite family stories. Very possibly his happiest times were the 20+ years living on his 40 acre “farm”. After retirement he filled his days planting trees and shrubs, building ponds, and always finding time for lengthy walks checking on the resident wildlife. He enjoyed simple pleasures; loved and was loved by his family; and always enjoyed time spent with friends.

Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betsy; sons, John (Karen) of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Jim (Theresa) of Appleton, Wisconsin and David (Kay) of Waukesha, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Todd (Michelle) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jay of Chicago, Illinois, Mary Christine and Rita of Appleton, and Dan and Sam of Waukesha; brothers, Samuel of Boston, Massachusetts and John (Gladys) of Port Washington and a sister, Nancy Klever of Port Washington and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 from 5 P.M. until the time of service at 7:30 P.M.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Columbia County Humane Society, N7768 Industrial Road, Portage, Wisconsin 53901 or Home Health United Hospice, P.O. Box 527, Baraboo, Wisconsin 53913 .
