In the spring of 1959 they moved back to Wisconsin Dells and took over the family business, Black Hawk Motel and Cottage Court, which consisted of twenty four aging cottages. For the next 44 years Shirley co-owned, expanded and operated the present Black Hawk Motel. During these years she was blessed with four children and five grandchildren. Her family was the love of her life. Her second love was operating the motel because she loved to work and meet people. Some of her repeat guests were considered extended family, some relationships dated back to over forty years. One of her passions was cooking; she often invited her children’s friends to the dinner table. She loved the daily task of washing towels and especially the motel bedding at the end of each season. It wasn’t done right unless it had that fresh Downy smell. She often stated “if you can’t say how it is, don’t bother saying it”. She used these words often with her battle against cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was “the rock” of the family and was known for her kind and generous heart. She felt blessed that she had beaten cancer long enough to hold her newborn grandson, Noah.
