Family has always been of the utmost of importance in Irene’s life. She was most vibrant and happy when she was around her family. Her life centered around making a warm and loving home for her family. Whether cooking, babysitting, or working, it was done for the good of the family.

Irene was faced with the devastation of the loss of her husband and friend, yet she endured what most of us cannot imagine, with strength and courage.

Every new member of the family was treated with loving kindness. She welcomed them with open arms and loved them as if they had been a part of the family from the start.

She was not judgmental. We all go through life with ups and downs yet she was supportive and loving through it all. She offered advice only when asked.

She raised five remarkable children who have a zest and love for life that is the envy of many families. She taught them the art of love and laughter by example.

Irene Palenik

Irene Palenik, age 80 of Hendersonville, Tennessee, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at the Hendersonville Medical Center .

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 7, 2003, at 11:00 A.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin, with Reverend Orville Wieman officiating. Burial will be at the Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells.

Irene was born March 20, 1922, in Ogema, Wisconsin the daughter of Karl and Mary (Hodeck) Novy. In November 1943 Irene enlisted into the U.S. Army and was intensely proud of her wartime service as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Force at then-Sheppard Field, Texas, in flight operations and air traffic control. During the same time, her husband-to-be Frank Palenik, who she married in June 1945, served in Europe as an officer as part of a bomber flight crew. In August 1945 she was honorably discharged.

Several specific things were particularly important to Irene: her faith in God, her family, her friends and her country. Wherever Frank and Irene lived during his career in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, they made lifelong friends – particularly in the Poynette, Wisconsin Dells, Mercer and Madison areas. Supporting and caring for each other, their faith in God and love for each other sustained them in the immeasurable grief of the losses of their sons Larry in 1971 and Glen in 1978. Throughout their marriage they expanded their immediate family by bringing nieces, nephews and new acquaintances close to them. Irene was known as “Ma Palenik” to dozens of young men and women as Larry and Glen were growing up, and in later years.

Always a positive spirit, Irene inspired everyone she met with her limitless enthusiasm and love of family and friends. Irene’s greatest joy was in assisting and being a friend to fellow travelers in this life; she asked for no greater gift than to be able to share with others.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; and sons, Larry and Glen.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton on Friday, February 7, 2003, from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11 A.M.
