Roley, Joanne Helen, age 68 of Madison, Wisconsin, died August 7, 2001 peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. Joanne was born November 4, 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Clinton and Helen Nelson of Mauston, Wisconsin. Joanne completed her Registered Nursing degree at LaCrosse, Wisconsin’s St. Frances School of Nursing in 1954. She practiced as a nurse and community volunteer for twenty-five years. Joanne married Everett L. Roley of St. Joseph, Missouri on June 11, 1956 and recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past June. Joanne was the devoted mother of five children. She was an avid gardener and throughout her life enjoyed volunteer work, tennis and attending her children’s hockey games. Joanne had an exquisite talent and passion for needlepoint. She was a wonderful wife and loving mother and is survived by her husband Everett and her children: Kevin (Kate Skaggs) of Watertown, Wisconsin; Gregory (Dolce) of Pensacola, Florida; Amy (Murphy Anderson) of Denver, Colorado; Thomas of Bryant, Wisconsin; and Mary Beth (Sharon Lim) of Madison. Joanne was also a proud grandmother, “Go-go” of four grand children: Kaitlyn, 11; Zachary, 8; Madeline, 6; and Sean, 3. Joanne is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Nancy Jo and Gerald Nelson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 10, 2001 at St Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5313 Flad Ave. at 11:00am, with a visitation at 10:00am.Rev. Steven Kortendick will officiate. The family asks that a memorial be made to Smoke Free Wisconsin at 329 W. Wilson St., Madison, WI 53703

Ryan, Andrew J. age 83 died on Monday, October 8, 2001 at Meriter Hospital. He was born March 20, 1918 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin the son of James and Augusta (McSherry) Ryan. Andrew had worked for many years for Madison Silos. He was a member of St. Raphaels Cathedral. Survivors include, two brothers, William (Violet), of Mt. Vernon, Robert (Pauline), of Mt. Horeb, two sisters, Mary Ellen (James) Parrell, of Black Earth, Kathleen (Robert) Woodruff, of Palm Desert, California, a sister-in-law Marion Ryan, of Madison, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and six sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, 222 W. Main St. on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Msgr. Daniel Ganshert will officiate with burial in St. Ignatius cemetery, Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. at the Church on Thursday, October 11, 2001 until the service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church.

Teslaw, Elizabeth Mamie age 90 of Waunakee died on July 20, 2001. Elizabeth was born in Milwaukee to John and Stella Kantak May 18, 1911. She Married Theodore (Ted) Teslaw in 1937 and moved to Madison where they lived until their retirement in 1974. They moved to Sun City, Arizona until Ted’s death in 1978. Elizabeth then moved back to Madison to be near her son Richard (Patricia) Teslaw. Elizabeth was a member of St. James Catholic Church where she cooked hot lunch and for special occasions for many years. She was an avid reader and was a pro at crossword puzzles. She said, “they keep my mind sharp.” A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. at St. James Catholic Church, 1134 St. James Ct., Madison, on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. The Rev. Douglas Dushack will officiate with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 after 10:00am until the service. We would like to thank Dr. Robert Gage and all the staff at the Waunakee Manor Health Care Center for providing the care needed for mom for the past 7 years. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility to care for the elderly in our community. The staff of Waunakee Manor that cares for the residents are the real heroes in life and we want to thank them for the loving care given to my mother during her stay there.

Thays, Shayne Arthur, infant son of Kevin and Tracy (Jablonski) Thays, died on Monday, October 1, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born October 1, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Survivors include, his parents, Kevin and Tracy, of Madison, maternal grandmother, Jan Jablonski, of Wausau, Wisconsin, maternal grandfather, Stanley Jablonski, of Birnamwood, Wisconsin, paternal grandparents, Jim and Alanna Thays, of Harrisville, Wisconsin, two uncles, Brian Thays, of Harrisville, Wisconsin and Jason (Jamie) Jablonski, of Mosinee, Wisconsin, maternal great-grandparents, Cecil and Hazel Stein, of Bushnell, Florida, and a great-aunt, Hilda Balfanz, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A Prayer Service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5701 Odana Road, Madison, Wisconsin, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 8, 2001 in honor of Shayne. Rev. David Swenson will officiate.

Twito, Janice Irene (Gleason), age 57 passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison. She was born on May 31, 1944 in Madison, WI the daughter of Lloyd L. and Marilynn Gleason. Janice worked in Madison for U.W. Hospitals, Wisconsin State Social Services, and CUNA for (25 years). Janice is survived by her husband Thomas and their two children: Jeffrey and Stephanie, parents Lloyd L. and Marilynn Gleason, brother Lloyd T. Gleason, sisters Marcia (Alden) Bahr and Barbara Troedel, sisters in law, Joanne Twito, Susan (Richard) Radock, and Karen (Jerry) Jackson, and brother in law, Steven (Sandy) Twito and many cousins, nieces and nephews and a grand niece. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 13, 2001 at Roselawn Memorial Park cemetery, 601 E. Broadway Street, Monona with Pastor Sheryl Erickson officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home, 5701 Odana Road, Madison. The family would like to express a special thank you to nurse Terry McSherry for special care and compassion to Janice and the family, the other duty nurses of the Medical Intensive Care Unit for their heroic efforts and the many doctors of the St. Mary’s staff who so graciously aided Janice and the family through this most difficult time.

Weisz, Carol Reuter, age 56 died on Sunday, August 12, 2001 unexpectedly after a short illness. She was born January 21, 1945 in Madison, Wisconsin the daughter of Edwin and Lois Ann (Doeringsfeld) Reuter. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1963. She had worked for many years for the State of Wisconsin and most recently at the Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance Company, Middleton. Carol enjoyed gardening and being outside. She loved to read. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She is survived by her children, Marc and friend, Kandie Florin, and her daughter Alyx, all of Madison, Eric Weisz, of Austin, Texas, her mother, Lois Ann Reuter, of Oregon, Wisconsin, her brother, Jerome (Linda) Reuter, of Westfield, Wisconsin, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Reuter. Funeral services will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5701 Raymond Road, Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Church on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 after 9:00 a.m. until the service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the Neuro Science Department, Meriter Hospital, 202 S. Park St., Madison, Wi. 53715.

Winchester, Frank N., passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care, in Fichburg. Frank married the former Betty Stultz on May 8, 1943 at St. Raphael’s Cathedral, Madison. He was an industrial arts teacher and taught in Columbus, Elkhorn, Chilton, Green Bay and Madison East, Cherokee Middle School, and Lincoln Middle School. He loved kids and teaching. Frank is survived by his wife Betty of 58 years, a son Bill (Mary) Winchester of Bloomington, Minnesota and 1 grandson, Chris. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Winchester and a sister Genevieve Winchester. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home, 5701 Odana Road, Madison with Father Robert Butz officiating. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. until time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Resurrection Catholic cemetery. A luncheon will then follow at the Westshire Reception Hall.The family would like to thank all the wonderful people who took care of Frank at the Don and Marilyn Hospice Care Center. Anderson, Alice Dorothea, age 81, passed away on October 13, 2001 at Four Winds Manor, Verona, Wisconsin, after a long illness. Alice was a loving, kind, and generous person who will be missed dearly by her family and friends. She will remain in our hearts forever. Alice worked two years as a housekeeper, 22 years as a farmers wife and 25 years as a nurses aide at Four Winds Manor. Quote Of Appreciation upon her Retirement: “Your 25 years of loving service to the residents of Four Winds Manor will be sorely missed. Your unselfish devotion to their care was exceptional.” Alice had many hobbies including crafts, plastic canvas, sewing, golfing, camping and puzzles. She is survived by her loving husband Kenneth J., of 61 years, a son, Kenneth A. (Patricia), of Verona, a daughter, Linda (Mark) Kraft, of Madison, three granddaughters, Sa”mone D. Anderson, of Iola, Wisconsin; Lisa L. Kraft, of Houghton, Michigan, and Ginger C.L. Anderson, of Madison, 3 great-grandchildren, Lynnette, Ricky, and Rose Anderson, of Iola, Wisconsin, two sisters, Madeline (Burlie) Johnson, of Mt. Horeb, Elva Klassy, of Greenville, North Carolina, and a dear cousin Alfred Gerbitz, of Verona, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Arnold Draeger and two sisters, Ettalyn Swiggum and Florence Bordson. Funeral services will be held at St. James Lutheran Church, 427 S. Main St., Verona, Wisconsin on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Jeff Jacobs will officiate with burial in the Verona cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the JOYCE-RYAN VERONA FUNERAL HOME, 118 N. Franklin St., Verona, Wisconsin on Monday, October 15, 2001. Bailey, Margaret “Peg”, age 87, left this crazy world October 25, 2001. Peg migrated to Wisconsin from North Carolina in 1935, with plans to attend the University of Wisconsin and become a college graduate. Her plans were altered by Gilbert, who followed her here, and convinced her to marry him and be a Mom and instead. Peg has now re-joined her loving husband of 64 years in the Gardens of Heaven. Peg started her wonderful life on February 11, 1914 in Akron, Ohio, the second daughter of Guy and Marion Whitaker. She and Gilbert were married on March 21, 1936, in Madison and were blessed with and are survived by three children, Wes (Rosemarie), Ted (Sharon), and Jane Stamm, all of Verona. Peg is also survived by her two sisters, Dixie McIntosh of Union City, GA and Catherine Whitaker of Orlando, FL, 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Peg, a 50 years resident of Verona, was employed as a telephone and information operator by “Ma Bell” in Madison for 27 years. She retired from the phone company in 1977, only to launch several new careers. She served as both the Clerk and Treasurer for the Town of Verona, holding each office separately for several years. While holding these positions, Peg also prepared tax returns, conducting business out of her home with Joyce McLeod, as P & J Telephone Pioneers, League of Women Voters and Heritage Congregational Church. Peg loved spending time in her garden, and supplying her friends and neighbors with her bountiful harvests. She was loved by all who knew her, and she loved all those she knew. She had the unique gift of finding the good in everything and everybody. If the world could have voted to select a role model for all to emulate, Peg surely would have been elected. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2001 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the JOYCE-RYAN VERONA FUNERAL HOME, 118 North Franklin Street, Verona. Memorial Services will be at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, October 29, 2001 at
Heritage Congregational Church, 3102 Prairie Road, Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials being made to Hospice Care or The American Cancer Society directly, or sent to the Family @ 7247 Cross Country Road, Verona, WI 53593-9710.

Bergemann, Debra F. born in Madison, March 23, 1956 to Lawrence and Frances Bergemann. Deb passed away on Friday October 26, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was passionate in her beliefs and lived her life with the same conviction. Creative in all areas of her life, her family, her beautiful flower gardens, her baking, especially those wonderful holiday cookies, many hand crafted gifts she made for family and friends, she will always be remembered. A cherished friend to many, she was always there for those who needed her. She loved to watch the many kinds of birds that came to enjoy her bird feeders and provided enjoyment during her last months at home. She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Bergemann and survived by her son, Gabe Bergemann, her mother, Frances L. Bergemann, sisters, Peg (Jim) Montgomery, Jen (Dave) Hantz, Patti (Michael) Gahagan, Kathy (John) Cordio, her brothers, Larry (Patricia) Bergemann, Rick (Kari) Bergemann, her nieces, Mary, K.C. and Kelly Cordio, her nephews, Tim and Dan Montgomery, Patrick and Danny Gahagan and her very special friends, too numerous to mention. Prior to her illness, she was employed at T. A.S. Communications, Inc. as Communications Coordinator for twelve years. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the University of Wisconsin Hospital Cancer Center and The Don &Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center for the excellent care provided during this difficult time. Bierd, John A. age 75, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center. He was born on December 9, 1925, the grandson of August and Tillie Bierd who parented him from infancy. John attended Randall grade school and graduated from West High School, class of 1943. He served in the Marine Corps in World War II, and upon completion of his military duties, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was called back for duty during the Korean War. John was very proud to have been a marine. In 1962, John joined the Dane County Sheriff’s Department retiring in 1990. His career as a detective included many memorable cases dealing with hostage negotiations, homicides, bank robberies and violent crimes. John was very dedicated to his profession, and he was well respected for his honesty, integrity and for his gift of wit and sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Jerelyn, their son, Jon, daughter-in-law, Patricia, and grandson, D.J. (Derek John) who all were the light of his life. Survivors also include a brother, Bill, and three special friends, Jim Bradley, Shaun Sabol and Dave Johnson. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father-in-law, Vilas Trappe, whom he had great admiration for, and a brother-in-law, Dick. The family thanks Dr. Barbara Stowe-Carpenter, Dr. Michael Thom, their nurses, staff, D6/4, many physicians of the U.W. Hospital and Clinics and HospiceCare for their compassionate care and support. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare, Inc., 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, Wisconsin 53711. Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly. Private services were held.

Brustman, Robert, age 70 died peacefully at Hospice Care on Friday, August 24, 2001. Bob was born in Oshkosh, WI on July 7, 1931 to Walter and Amelia (Christensen) Brustman. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1949. He was a former member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps and an Eagle Scout. Bob married Lois A. Schmidmayr on July 31, 1954. He worked for the University of Wisconsin, retiring from the purchasing department after 35 years of service to the state. Bob enjoyed playing and umpiring slow pitch softball with the city of Madison Recreation Leagues. He was an avid square and round dancer, with his wife Lois, for 50 years. He sang in the Capitol City Chordsmen barbershop chorus and in the Saint Maria Goretti choirs. Bob was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church for 40 years. He and Lois enjoyed their summer home at Pioneer Park, Lake Delton. He also volunteered for the American Red Cross. As an organ transplant recipient, Bob and his family will be eternally gratefully for the “gift of life” given to him 5 years ago by his donor Melanie and her family, as well as the transplant team at U.W. Hospital. Bob is survived by his wife Lois, his daughter Ann (Paul) Starkey of Ossian, IN, his son David of Los Angeles, CA, his grandchildren, Jessica and Benjamin Starkey, his brother Dick (Doris) of Richland Center, his sister, Lois (Ron) Heidner of Buena Park, CA, nephews, grand-nephews and a grand-niece. Bob was preceded in death by his son, Jim and his parents. Friends may call at the JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, on Sunday, August 26, 2001 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 P.M. A Mass in celebration of Bob’s life will be held at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave., at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 27, 2001, with Msgr. Michael Burke officiating. Burmester, William C., age 36, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of friends and family on Thursday, August 16, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was the first-born son of Neil and Sallie (Quinn) Burmester, born in Monroe, WI on November 28, 1964. He graduated from Pardeeville High School in 1983, Bill attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After obtaining his degree in Communications in 1988, Bill worked in a series of sales positions until 1991 when he started American Trailer Sales. Bill married Michelle Castillo on October 10, 1998. He is survived by his loving wife Michelle L. Burmester; his mother Sallie L. Burmester of Middleton; his two brothers, James B. (Nikki Eddy) of DeForest, and Robert C. (Susan) of Madison; and a niece, Alexa. Numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends also survive him. His father Neil preceded him in death. Bills family would like to thank everyone who visited and provided support to them. A very special thank you to Michelle’s parents, Nancy and Mike Castillo, for helping Michelle care for Bill and making his last days as comfortable as possible. Thanks also to Bills, cousins, extended family and friends for all of their love and support throughout Bills illness, and the crew at American Trailer Sales. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Middleton, WI. Dorsey, Andrew “Andy”. Our beloved son and brother Andrew (Andy) Dorsey age 23, passed away suddenly on August 13th, 2001, as a result of a ruptured brain aneurysm, at the Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley, CA, with his family at his side. Andy was born in Madison, WI, where he attended Falk Elementary, Orchard Ridge Middle, and Memorial High Schools. Andy graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, majoring in Chemistry and German, with the highest honors. While at the University Andy spent a year abroad studying German at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Last August, Andy moved to Berkeley, to pursue graduate studies in organic chemistry at the University of Berkeley, CA. Andy loved his family and friends very much. He was loving, caring, thoughtful, and kind. He was very helpful, always putting others ahead of himself. Andy enjoyed the simple life and the beauty of nature. Andy is survived by his parents, Dr. David and Klara Dorsey, of Madison, and by his sister, Dr. Sarah Dorsey, of Cleveland. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at St.Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5313 Flad Ave. Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday, August 28th, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, 295 Cambridge St., Old Forge Realty Bldg. Boston, MA 02114 or to your favorite charity. Andy, you will be missed dearly by all. You will be in our hearts and in our thoughts and prayers forever.
