Professor of Zoology and Anthropology at UW-Madison, 1963-83, he influenced research on human evolution and helped usher in a modern age of Paleoanthropology. The South African native uncovered hundreds of fossils from the Transvaal region in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s, the most important being the famous skull ‘Mrs. Ples’ which represents the missing link between ape man and true man.
