Hagen, Elizabeth Ann (Roherty)

VERONA - Elizabeth Ann (Roherty) Hagen, age 77, known to friends and family as "Betty, " died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Select Specialty Hospital of Madison, after a long illness. She was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Janesville, to Lewis and Marion (McCarthy) Roherty. She attended St. Bernard's Grade School and Edgewood High School. At UW-Madison she joined Kappa Alpha Theta, and always smiled at the antics and pageantry of her sorority days. Betty graduated with honors from UW-Madison in 1953 and celebrated by taking her Hispanic Studies degree on the road to Mexico, with her oldest and dearest friend, June Stangel. Betty's first employment was with the pediatric clinics of Tanner and Anderson. On July 10, 1954, she married Richard E. Hagen of Madison and raised six beautiful children. As her children grew, she began working at Bishop's Buffet. Later, she took a job at Edgewood High School, as a library assistant and supervisor. She treasured the many friendships she made with her co-workers and the students. Betty happily shared her friendship with everyone and left an imprint on the hearts of all who knew her. Her trademark Irish grace and charm led the way in every celebration, and she was usually the last one to go home. She was a long-time member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Verona. Compassion was at her core, and her advice was always abundant and free. She loved reading, music, and theatre, almost as much as the Packers. Betty's love, companionship, storytelling, and humor will be missed immeasurably by her children, grandchildren, friends, and "adopted children." Survivors include two daughters and four sons, Holly (David) Dionne of Verona, Mark (Sheila) Hagen of Chanhassen, Minn., Heidi (Dick) Roy of Breckenridge, Colo., Andy Hagen of Kansas City, Kan., Chris Hagen of Madison, and Eric (Amy) Hagen of Belleville. Betty's natural optimism and joy was compounded eight-fold by grandchildren, Katie, Meg, Kelsey, Kaelin, Olivia, Sean, Ryan, and Casey. Betty is also survived by her beloved siblings, Kathleen (Ray) Carroll of Madison, James (Marion) Roherty of DeForest, and sister-in-law, Theresa Roherty of Madison. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Paul. The family wishes to thank the staff of Select Specialty Hospital of Madison and the staff of Meriter Hospital's Intensive Care Unit for exemplary care and unparalleled compassion. The pulmonologists of Meriter Hospital and UW Health were expert, professional, and empathetic, just as the nurses, nursing assistants, and therapists brought respite to all family members. Above all, they recognized Betty's remarkable spirit and unwavering humor. Betty entered the hospital as a patient, but grew to be a friend to many. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH, 301 N. Main St., Verona, on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at 11 a.m. Father David Timmerman will officiate. Friends and relatives may call at the church on Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Following the funeral, Betty's cremains will be buried with her parents during a private ceremony at Resurrection cemetery, Madison.
