Meacham, Steven James

LONE ROCK - Steven James Meacham, age 61, of Lone Rock, passed away in his home on Sunday, July 27, 2008, following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 5, 1947, in Rice Lake, the son of Walter and Marion (Walls) Meacham. On June 13, 1965, he married Barbara G. Osley in Sparta. Steve was a 1965 graduate of Melrose High School. There he was active in many sporting events and met his kind hearted wife, Barbara, who was able to take his quick wit, odd sense of humor, and sometimes ornery ways with a grain of salt! Steve did many things in his life; his family owned and operated the A and W Root Beer Stand in Sparta, worked as a turkey farmer, worked for the village of Wilton, worked in a feed mill and later co-owned a feed mill in Viola, dabbled in real estate, drove semi-truck for Kemps, and did janitorial work for the UW system. His hobbies were many, but mostly he was an outdoor sportsman that included hunting and fishing with his brother, Mark, brother-in-law, Chuck, and friend, Russ. He never minded that his two sons-in-law, (Dave and Rod) could fix all the things that he couldn't. He was also an avid gardener, tree grower, and grass grower. But nothing could compare to his spending special time with his five grandchildren. Steve is survived by his wife, Barbara Meacham of Lone Rock; mother, Marion Meacham of Black River Falls; two daughters, Jan (Rod) Sherwood of Tomah, and Gwen (Dave) Gilbertson of Spring Green; five grandchildren, Cole, Alyssa Sherwood of Tomah, and Erik, Alex and Rebecca Gilbertson of Spring Green; a brother, Dr. Mark Meacham of Marathon; and three sisters, Dr. Marion Hemstrom-Krainess of Dallas, Texas, Professor Kitty Meacham of Toronto, Canada, and Ann Thayer of Kendall. Steve is preceded in death by his father, Walter Meacham. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL in Richland Center. The Rev. Steven C. Schneider will officiate with burial in the Lone Rock cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and also on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Pratt Funeral Service assisted the family with arrangements.
