Kimport, Kenneth R.

MADISON/ VERO BEACH, FLA. - Ken Kimport died on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Martha Moore Kimport; four of his five children: Janet Zimmerman, Nancy Hylbert, Ken Kimport Jr., and Hattie McLean; and his step son, Kevin Wright. His first wife, Julia and son, Charlie, predeceased him. His brother, Donald died in childhood. Donald's twin sister, Dorothy lived to be 67. Ken is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was dearly loved by an expansive family and will be greatly missed by both his family and many fine friends. Ken was born to Charles and Florence Kimport on July 10, 1919, in Manchester, Iowa. After graduating from Manchester High School, he entered the University of Iowa, receiving his degree in Business Administration in 1941. In August 1941, Ken joined the Army Air Corps. He earned his pilot's silver wings, was promoted to lieutenant and for his first duty, was assigned to the 4th Ferry Group of the Air Transport Command. Their mission was delivering aircraft to North Africa, the Middle East, South America and the United Kingdom. In April 1943, Ken was promoted to captain and assigned to Air Transport Command in the CBI-China, Burma, and India theater. Their mission was flying gasoline over the Himalayan Mountains to supply the U.S. Air Force Command in China, the place where initial raids on the Japanese empire were staged. The route from India to China became know as the "Hump." Like most of the brave World War II veterans described by Tom Brokaw in "The Greatest Generation, " Ken was very modest about his war experiences and the every day dangers he and his fellow pilots faced. The "Hump" was a particularly dangerous route due to the severe winds and weather that were encountered over the Himalayan Mountains. Many of his fellow pilots were lost because headwinds consumed fuel prior to reaching their destination. After completing his missions, the Army Air Corps assigned Ken flight instructor status in India until the war ended. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for his service. All throughout life, Ken maintained the courage, character, modesty and values set in his early life and war experience. After the war, Ken moved into the business arena with the same enthusiasm. He joined IBM in Chicago, as a sales associate, and gained the sales abilities and business skills that later allowed him to open the Kimport Packard dealership in Madison. Several years later, he was hired by Paul Kayser, his mentor in the auto business, as general manager of Kayser Ford, then Wisconsin's largest Ford dealership. His friend, Paul died unexpectedly in 1956. Ford Motor Company, recognizing Ken's capabilities, provided financial backing and Ken became sole owner of Kayser Ford. Leveraging his auto dealership success, he started Kayser Leasing, and with the help of his friend, Ray Stolowski, built Kayser Leasing into a large regional car leasing company, ultimately selling it to the Associates of North America. Ken was extremely proud that he could maintain Kayser Ford as Wisconsin's largest Ford dealership over the years. In 1991, he recognized it was time to retire, and sold Kayser Ford to an employee group. He thought Paul Kayser would be proud of the Kayser tradition he maintained. During his 35 years as a Ford dealer, Ken served on five national dealer councils as the elected delegate representing the Ford dealers from the Midwest. As a delegate he had the opportunity to sit at the conference table with the likes of Robert McNamara, Lee Iacocca, and Henry Ford II. He was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club for 40 years. Ken also served Madison in many civic organizations as: chairperson of United Way, a member of the Bascom Hill Society, a member of Alex de Tocqueville, and a director on the Boards of Mautz Paint Co., Badge Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Wisconsin Auto Trader Association. While Ken was a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Iowa Presidents Club, he was also a strong UW backer and avid Badgers fan. Ken participated in the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, and was a longtime member of Maple Bluff Country Club, and Madison Club. Ken was a good athlete and particularly enjoyed golf and tennis. He was a great and gracious competitor, whether it was in business or sports. He had a great love of life and people, and was generous with many causes. Whatever the occasion or event, Ken provided good and interesting conversation, and a great sense of humor. He was a willing giver of laughter, love, fun, and good times. During the past 20 years, Ken and Martha have spent seven months each year in Florida, recently moving to Oak Harbor at Vero Beach, Fla. Ken and Martha both loved to travel and enjoyed many wonderful trips, some to reunions with the Hump pilots. Ken was intensely fond and loyal to all his friends, and particularly his World War II buddies. He kept contact on a regular basis until the end of his life. Ken would want all of his friends and family to remember him for his wonderful humor, warm laugh, and for the many good and happy times they shared. The highest tribute to the dead is not grief, but gratitude. A memorial service will held in Vero Beach at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indian River Medical Center Foundation, 1000 36th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960. Arrangement entrusted to Strunk Funeral Homes and Crematory, Sebastian, Fla.
