Metz, Larry Ralph

MADISON - Larry Ralph Metz, age 64, passed away in his home on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, following a four month battle against metastasized cancer of an unknown source and a lifelong battle against Crohn's Disease. Larry was born in Emporia, Kan., on March 20, 1944, and grew up in Wichita, Kan. Larry was an active member of his high school debate team. Larry attended Wichita State University earning a bachelor degree becoming a Certified Public Accountant. After earning his degree he was hired by Peat, Marwick and Mitchell, an accounting firm in Kansas City, Mo. In 1972, Larry accepted an offer to work as an auditor for Oscar Mayer and Co. in Madison, and he and his newlywed wife, Judy, moved to Madison. Larry had several other accounting jobs in the Madison and southern Wisconsin area over the years and briefly taught accounting courses at Lakeland College. His most recent position as an auditor with the Wisconsin DNR allowed Larry to travel the state performing audits at the scenic state parks and forests. Larry enjoyed the perk of seeing and experiencing the natural beauty of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region through his employment with the DNR. Additionally, Larry has authored several articles for and was a member of the Internal Auditors Association. Larry met and fell in love with Judith Ann Miller of Pittsburg, Kan. They were married on May 23, 1970, honeymooned at Highway 83 Boatdock and Resort near Lake Pom de Terre in Missouri, and lived in Overland Park, Kan. After moving to Wisconsin, Larry fathered two sons with Judy, Alexander D. was born Sept. 9, 1973, and Christian E. was born June 21, 1978. Larry enjoyed working with both of his sons through their involvement in Cub and Boy Scouts and continued with scouting after the boys had grown up. Larry loved to travel, camp, and canoe and has made several expeditions to the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota with friends and family. He especially enjoyed talking about fishing and "wetting the line" even more. After a trip to visit his uncle and aunt at their nudist retreat home he teased Judy about wanting to retire there. Larry and Judy also traveled to Australia in 2001, a trip of a lifetime. In Madison, Larry rode the city bus daily to and from work. He had a dry sense of humor, a quick wit, and a love for hats from baseball caps to brimmed hats and his Bomber hats. He even would wear one at night when he would take the dog out. Larry did not want to get a MOONBURN! Larry also enjoyed watching bull riding and football on T.V. when he wasn't working on the computer. Larry's youngest son, Christian E. died suddenly in early April 2005, shaking the family to the core. Larry and Christian had recently kindled a newfound adult parent/child relationship and the loss of Christian was deeply devastating to Larry. Larry has gone to be with Christian, his beloved grandparents, friends, and colleagues. Survivors include his beloved wife, Judy; son, Alex; parents, Ralph (father) and Rosie Metz of Wichita, Kan., Paul and Betty (mother) Ferril of Wichita, Kan., and Joan Miller of Pittsburg, Kan.; his brother, James (Sharon) Metz of Richmond, Texas; his sisters, Koni (Troy) Manzi and Michella (Andrew) Crowley, both who live in Wichita, Kan., and Jerry (Karen) Hobbs in Lutz, Fla.; and Ellie, the family dog who was his best buddy and was very protective of Larry. The family wants to thank the Oncology/Hematology Clinic, 1 S. Park, especially Dr. Hei and staff who took care of Larry, Dr. Betsy Trowbridge, Primary Care doctor at 20 S. Park and HospiceCare who went above and beyond to make Larry comfortable in his last days. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to HospiceCare, American Cancer Society and to the Food Pantry at First United Methodist Church. A celebration of life service will be held at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, at 2:30 p.m. officiated by Pastor Keith S. Schroerlucke on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008. Friends may call on Saturday at church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service.
