Fox, Karen R.

SUN PRAIRIE - Karen Rae Fox, age 70, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at home. She was born Jan. 11, 1938, in Madison, the daughter of the late Edmund and Alice (Strommen) McKnight. Karen was born and raised in Madison. She graduated from West High School in 1956 and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa in 1960. Her first years of teaching were in Wheaton, Ill., followed by two years in Karlsruhe, Germany where she met the love of her life, Jim Fox. She resided in Longwood, Fla., where she was an elementary school teacher for 40 years. One of Karen's greatest gifts was working with children including kindergartners and those who were hearing impaired. Upon retirement in 2004, she moved to Sun Prairie to be near her family. Karen was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, recently trained as a Stephen Minister. She was a weekly volunteer at the UW Children's Hospital. Karen was part of the TEC community (Vernon, Dodgeville). Karen was a giving, outgoing and spiritual woman. She enjoyed gardening and singing. Karen was a gift to everyone who knew her and will be deeply missed. Karen is survived by her son, Rev. Lance (Linda) Fox and their children, Duncan and Morgan Fox all of Dublin, Ohio; daughter, Julie (special friend, Matt Yoksh) Fox of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; siblings, Gordon McKnight, Marilyn (Steve Erickson) McKnight, Bonnie (John) Webber and Linda (Jim) Krotzman; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison with Pastor Laura Sutherland officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to either Bethel Lutheran Church Media Services or HospiceCare Inc.

Iverson, Merrill L.

LAS VEGAS/ MADISON/ STOUGHTON - Merrill L. Iverson, age 87, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in Las Vegas. He was born in Stoughton on Dec. 28, 1920, the son of Theodore and Mabel (Gronlid) Iverson. Merrill graduated from Stoughton High School in 1938. He worked on his family's farm and for a brief period at Gardner Bakery in Madison. Merrill entered the Army Air Corps in 1942. While serving as a ball turret gunner of a B24 Liberator attached to the 15th Air Force he flew 50 missions and became a decorated veteran which included the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following Merrill's discharge in 1945 he attended MATC in Madison and became a certified meat cutter. He worked for National Tea Food Stores in Madison. In 1959 Merrill moved to California and worked for Market Basket until he retired. After retiring Merrill moved to Las Vegas, where he lived with his longtime companion, Lillian Williams. Merrill is survived by his daughter, Linda (Tim) Green of Newport Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Brenden (Jill) Green of Redlands, Calif., and Amie (Skip) Hofmann of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Lloyd (Arlene) Iverson of Madison, and Ann D. Nelson of Stoughton; nephew, Chuck (Laura) Iverson of Middleton; nieces, Nancy Webb of Madison, Kristi (Todd) Wright of Stoughton, and Lisa (Jeff) Alme of Stoughton; eight great nieces and nephews; and a great-great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Theodore "Teddy" Iverson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 700 County Road B, Stoughton. Friends may greet the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday. Memorials may be made in Merrill's name to the charity of the donors choice.

McGraw, Justin G.

DODGEVILLE - Justin Gerald McGraw, age 26, of Dodgeville, died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at his home. He was born on March 5, 1982, in Dodgeville, the son of Gerald and Victoria (Squire) McGraw. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Dodgeville High School in 2000. Justin earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance from UW-Platteville and was presently pursuing a second degree in accounting. Justin was an integral part of the family farm. He had an extreme love of nature and was an avid gardener. On weekends, he would attend bluegrass shows at the Barrymore and Orpheum theaters in Madison. He loved to cook and made a tremendous salsa. At UW-Platteville, Justin volunteered his accounting skills to assist low-income families with tax preparation. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Justin is survived by his parents, Jerry and Vicki McGraw of Dodgeville; his sisters, Erin (Jeremy) May of Omaha, Neb., Megan McGraw of Madison, and Molly McGraw (special friend, Doug Banfield) of Platteville; his grandmother, Lois McGraw of Dodgeville; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul McGraw, Earl and Grace Squire. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Dodgeville. Father Henry Kalscheuer will officiate. Inurnment will be held in St. Joseph's cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the GORGEN-McGINLEY and AYERS FUNERAL HOME in Dodgeville, and from 10 a.m. until time of Mass on Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Justin's name.

Paul, Michael S.

DEFOREST - Michael Shane Paul, age 33, of DeForest, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008. He was born Jan. 16, 1975, in Tomah, the son of Michael Paul and Linda (Babcock) Morris-Paul. Michael is survived by the two loves of his life, Danna Schroeder and their son, Michael W. Paul of DeForest; his father, Michael (Linda) Paul of DeForest; mother, Linda (Doug) Morris of Milwaukee; sister, Stacey (Mike) Pettersson of West Allis; and his four-legged side kicks, King and Champ. He is further survived by extended family members and many friends. Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Caroline and Wallace Babcock; and his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Florence Paul. Michael was all about the open road whether it was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle or driving truck. He enjoyed keeping in close contact with all his family members especially Danna, his son Michael and his parents. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, from noon until 3 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL SERVICE, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie. Funeral prayers will be held at 3 p.m. Please come as you are - casual and Harley apparel is welcome!

Riddle, Lawrence A.

MONONA - Lawrence A. Riddle, age 74, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on April 21, 1934, in Madison, to Austin and Sadie (Bingham) Riddle. Larry worked for the University of Wisconsin. He was a hard worker, a conservative man with high morals and integrity, a stern but gentle father, and well liked by everyone who knew him. Larry frequented East Towne Mall and enjoyed the time spent with his food court friends. For the past several years, Larry loved to play bingo and made lasting friendships in those halls. He is survived by three sons, Larry (Kristina), Dan, and Scott (Catherine); six grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Pauley, Shirley (Bill) Drenkhahn, and Karen (Anthony) Santos; two brothers, Dennis (Brenda) Riddle and Jeffery (Michelle) Riddle; and several nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Jessica; and a sister, Janet Riddle. Funeral services will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK CHAPEL, 401 Femrite Drive, Monona, at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008. Visitation will be at the chapel from noon until the time of the service. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
Larry was known for not having a hair out of place.

Rutlin, Shirley M.

DEFOREST - Shirley M. Rutlin, age 90, died on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, after a short illness at HospiceCare. Shirley was born May 26, 1918, in Sun Prairie. Between snow bird jaunts to Lake Havasu, Ariz., she spent all of her life in the Madison area. Shirley has been in the business of helping others her entire life. She was a nurse for more than 50 years doing some of her most meaningful work in the geriatric population. She was so dedicated to enriching the lives of others that after her retirement from nursing she volunteered at senior centers and nursing homes in the Sun Prairie/ DeForest area, helping those even younger than herself. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW. She lived her life as someone who always had a smile and a kind word. Shirley never got angry or complained and strived to make others around her comfortable. She is a true gem. Thanks to the DeForest Area Senior and Community Center and HospiceCare Inc. and the Senior Helpers of Madison for all their help in Shirley's final days. Preceding her death are her parents, George and Stella Chase; brothers, Willis and Forrest Chase; and her son, Michael Dobson. Surviving are her husband, Bob Rutlin of DeForest; sons, Bob Dobson of Muscoda, and Danny (Joan) of Wheaton, Ill.; stepchildren, Tom (Terry) of Madison, and Linda (Lonnie) Schuett of Watertown; 13 grandchildren, Jeri, Bobby, Chuckie, Jimmy, Cheyenne, Travis, Amy, Jennifer, Michael, Robin, Brett, Amanda and Josh; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith (Mary) Chase of Galena, Ill.; and special friends, Marge and John Hansen of DeForest. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the TUSCHEN-NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 302 Columbus St., Sun Prairie. Chaplain John McCarthy will preside. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711-5395.
In the words of her husband Bob, "She is just the best girl!" No doubt anyone that knew her feels the same.

Tierney, Edward T. "Ned"

PORTAGE - Edward T. "Ned" Tierney, age 78, of Saddle Ridge, died on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. Edward Tierney was born on Oct. 2, 1929, in Portage, the son of Edward Fredrick and Elizabeth Bess (Jowett) Tierney. He attended Central Wisconsin University at Stevens Point and Marquette University. Ned was married on May 24, 1952, at Paris Island, Beaufort, S.C., to Judith Felton. He served his country as a hospital corpsman during the Korean conflict with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Ned had worked for Novartis as a pharmaceutical representative, and was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 1707. He was known for his great love of cars. He is survived by his wife, Judy; children, John (Laurie) Tierney of Waukesha, James T. Tierney of Portage, and Susan (Dayton) McKay of Milwaukee; grandchildren, John Jr. and Anne Tierney, Danielle, Nicole and Jaclyn Tierney; his brother, William (Shirley) Tierney of Portage; his sister, Sally Stanek of Madison; his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen (Paul) Farley of Cedarburg; other near relatives and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Robert Stanek; and niece, Ramona Hurtado. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH in Portage, with Father Jim Murphy presiding. Entombment will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, with military graveside services. Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at the PFLANZ MANTEY MENDRALA FUNERAL HOME in Portage, and on Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. A Scripture Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
