BLUE MOUNDS - Alice Uptegraw, age 78, died on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Ellestad Funeral Home, 500 N. 8th St., Mount Horeb.

Burreson, Hazel C.

BARNEVELD - Hazel C. Burreson, age 94 of Barneveld, died on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at HospiceCare, Inc. in Fitchburg. She was born on Nov. 8, 1913, in Stoughton, to Henry and Clara (Lindocken) Gordon. She grew up in the rural Barneveld area and attended Clay Hill Elementary School and Mount Horeb High School. Hazel was a lifetime member of Perry Lutheran Church and of its WELCA. Hazel was united in marriage to the late Everett Burreson on Nov. 29, 1933. Hazel and Everett farmed in the Barneveld area until 1954 when they moved to the Village of Barneveld. They raised five children. Hazel was very devoted to her family, and her life centered around giving to others. She enjoyed birthday and holiday celebrations, family reunions, and loved to play cards with family and friends. Hazel will be greatly missed by her family. Survivors include four daughters, Carole Jean (Fred) Farley of Blue Grass, Iowa, Rochelle (Ted) Boucher of Brooklyn, JoAnn Greenberg of Denver, Colo. and Geanyce Brammer of Verona; a son, Greg (Ann) Burreson of Barneveld; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett on Jan. 11, 2000; and four brothers, Virgil, Harvey, Orvin, and Maynard Gordon. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at PERRY LUTHERAN CHURCH in Daleyville, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th St., Mount Horeb. The family would like to thank the staff of both Girlie's Manor and HospiceCare for their kindness and compassion.

LODI / SAUK PRAIRIE - Marvel A. Carncross, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in Prairie du Sac. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at CONCORDIA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH in Prairie du Sac, where the family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Following services, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall.

Falkenstein, Chloe Mae

MADISON - Our precious Chloe Mae Falkenstein, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. She was born on Jan. 16, 2008, the daughter of Scott and Tara (Avery) Falkenstein. Though she was with us for only seven short months, she brought her parents, sister, and everyone that met her, so much joy. Chloe was a sweet baby girl who was always happy. She will forever be missed by her parents, Scott and Tara; her sister, Tiffany; paternal grandfather and grandmother, Gerald and Judy Falkenstein; maternal grandmother and grandfather, Lisa Ellis and Gerald (Julie) Avery; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Osborn; maternal great-grandfather, Ken Harmon; pets, Capone and Rocky; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Chloe was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Jackie Harmon; great-grandfather, Gerald Osborn; great uncle, Terry Harmon; and pet dog, Zues. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, with the Rev. Fred Weiss presiding. Burial will be at Blooming Grove cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
Chloe, mommy and daddy love you so much and will miss you every minute of every day.

Fox, Karen R.

SUN PRAIRIE - Karen Rae Fox, age 70, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at home. She was born Jan. 11, 1938, in Madison, the daughter of the late Edmund and Alice (Strommen) McKnight. Karen was born and raised in Madison. She graduated from West High School in 1956 and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa in 1960. Her first years of teaching were in Wheaton, Ill., followed by two years in Karlsruhe, Germany where she met the love of her life, Jim Fox. She resided in Longwood, Fla., where she was an elementary school teacher for 40 years. One of Karen's greatest gifts was working with children including kindergarteners and those who were hearing impaired. Upon retirement in 2004, she moved to Sun Prairie to be near her family. Karen was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, recently trained as a Stephen Minister. She was a weekly volunteer at the UW Children's Hospital. Karen was part of the TEC community (Vernon, Dodgeville). Karen was a giving, outgoing and spiritual woman. She enjoyed gardening and singing. Karen was a gift to everyone who knew her and will be deeply missed. Karen is survived by her son, Rev. Lance (Linda) Fox and their children, Duncan and Morgan Fox all of Dublin, Ohio; daughter, Julie (partner, Matt Yoksh) Fox of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; siblings, Gordon McKnight, Marilyn (Steve Erickson) McKnight, Bonnie (John) Webber and Linda (Jim) Krotzman; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison with Pastor Laura Sutherland officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to either Bethel Lutheran Church Media Services or HospiceCare Inc. Karen and her family wish to express their appreciation for the exceptional care received from the staff of HospiceCare of Madison.

Gray, Margaret W.

SUN PRAIRIE/ SABULA, IOWA - Margaret W. Gray, age 93, of Sun Prairie, formerly of Sabula, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at her home in Sun Prairie. Margaret was born on Jan. 20, 1915, in rural Sabula, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Peters) Gruhn. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith in October 1915, in Clinton. Margaret married Robert Gray on Sept. 2, 1937, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa. Robert passed away on Aug. 23, 1943. Margaret was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She worked for the Speaker Factory in Sabula for 20 years. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where she was part of the first confirmation class in December 1945. She was a past member of the Martha Circle and served as custodian for many years at Calvary Lutheran Church. Margaret was also a member of the Sabula Senior Citizens. She enjoyed and loved gardening flowers, sewing, doing fancy work, knitting, and crocheting. Margaret will be dearly missed by her son, Henry W. (Janet) Gray of Ames, Iowa; a daughter, Joanne (Reed) Ellingson of Sun Prairie; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Francis (Calvin) Keil of Whitewater, and Jacquline Giddings of Miles, Iowa. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; an infant daughter; and four sisters. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH in Sabula, Iowa, with Pastor Robert Krueger and Pastor Peter Narum officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will be in the Sterling cemetery in rural Sabula, Iowa. Memorials may be given to Camp Courageous, E.L.C.A. Disaster Relief Fund, the Victory Center, or a charity of the donor's choice in Margaret's memory.

Heitmann, Paul J.

RICHLAND CENTER/ RACINE - Paul J. Heitmann, 75 of Richland Center, Wis. and formerly of Racine, Wis., died at 11 p.m. on Tuesday Aug. 12, 2008, at Orchard Manor, Lancaster, Wis. According to Paul's wishes there will be no visitation. Private family services and committal will be held at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory 2595 Rockdale Rd Dubuque, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Kerr, Jean M.

PORTAGE - Jean M. Kerr, age 77, of Portage, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at University Hospital in Madison after an unexpected illness. Honoring Jean's wishes, she was cremated and there will be no viewing. Friends who wish to offer their condolences to the family may call on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the PFLANZ MANTEY MENDRALA FUNERAL HOME in Portage, where a brief prayer service will be held at 4 p.m., with the Rev. David Hankins officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Mary cemetery, Briggsville. In lieu of flowers, memorials of your choice may be made in the family's name. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to family, friends, and the staff at UW Hospital in Madison, Wis.

MADISON/ LAKE MILLS - Julia A. (Zimmerman) Pierce, a Madison resident for most of her life, passed from this life on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, in Lake Mills. She was the beloved wife of the late Glarice C. Pierce, devoted daughter of the late Andrew J. and Elizabeth M. Zimmerman; loving mother of Thomas L. (Ok Hui) of Chicago, Ill., LeRoy L. (Prudence) of Lake Mills, the late Duane A. (Karen) of Aurora, Colo., and the late Claire E. of Kissimmee, Fla.; proud grandmother of 11; and great-grandmother of 18. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, with the Rev. Calvin Harfst presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008.
