Rothwell, Thomas E.

TOMAHAWK - Thomas E. Rothwell, age 70 of Tomahawk, passed away Aug. 9, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. Tom was born Aug. 23, 1937, in Dodgeville, the son of Roy and Victorine (Sullivan) Rothwell. He was formerly married to Verda Ruhland. Tom was raised in the Dodgeville and Linden areas, where he attended school. Tom joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17, and served during the Korean War. He moved from Madison to the Tomahawk area in 1977. He was an iron worker until 1985. He owned and operated Bradley Sheet Metal from 1985 until his retirement in 2002. Tom was past president and past district commander for the American Legion Bronsted Searl Post No. 93. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomahawk, where he served as an usher for many years. He enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, golf, and cribbage. Survivors include, three daughters, Pamela (Rick) Frantz of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Lori (Greg) Elliott of Mesa, Ariz. and Jill (Jack) Knapp of Trempealeau; a son, Daniel (Robin) Rothwell of Dane; six brothers, Richard (Karen) Rothwell of Verona, Donald (Judie) Rothwell of Verona, Edward (Sylvia) Rothwell of Huntsville, Ala., Jack (Diane) Rothwell of Madison, Dennis (Mary) Rothwell of Monona and Douglas Rothwell of Madison; two sisters, Judy Hannan of Madison and Vicky (John) Harrington of Crystal Lake, Ill.; former longtime companion, Barbara Wagner of Tomahawk; three stepdaughters, Donna Adams of Eagle River, Cindy Kane of Tomahawk and Lisa Friese of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepsons, Michael (Wendy) Wagner of Prescott Valley, Ariz. and Donald Wagner of Sparta. Tom is further survived by 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Rothwell; three sisters, Ann Bennett, Marilyn Yearous, Julie Davis; and a brother, Robert Rothwell. A Memorial Mass for Thomas Rothwell will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Tomahawk. Following Mass, a gathering to celebrate memories of Tom will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the AMERICAN LEGION HALL in Tomahawk. There will also be a Memorial Service held in Verona at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at ST. ANDREW'S CATHOLIC CHURCH. Interment will be in St. Andrew's cemetery. Sherven, Nathan John

MADISON - Nathan John Sherven, age 70, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at his home. He was born on April 7, 1938, in Monroe, the son of Eugene and Arlene (Elmer) Sherven. He graduated from Mount Horeb High School and served in the U.S. Army. Nathan farmed for several years, sold oil for Central Petroleum Co., and was an insurance salesman for 37 years for Combined Insurance Company of America. As an insurance salesman, Nathan started out with the Accident Division in April 1965. In his third week in the field, he started writing 100 policies per week and kept that string going for more than four years. He had the "International Sales" record with the company. He had many high achievements, won 32 WCS Grand Diamonds, and wrote 50 policies a week for 41 consecutive weeks. Nathan wrote $1, 000, 000 face value policies in three months 21 times during his career. Why was he so successful? He maintained a good attitude, set goals, and knew his sales material. Nathan was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. His infectious smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Beverly of 41 years; his three children, Brent Sherven and Jon (Lisa) Sherven both of Madison, and Wendy (David) Warner of Mount Horeb; and two grandchildren, Kayla and Hunter Warner, whom he called "Jiggers and Dollies." Nathan is also survived by a brother, Gene (Julie) Sherven of Brooklyn; a sister, Joanne (Robert) Hiltbrand of Richland Center; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Arlene Sherven. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at YORK MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, corner of Highway 39 and Highway 78 in rural Blanchardville, with the Rev. Mark Gruner officiating. Burial will follow at York Memorial Lutheran Church cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. - 12:50 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at the church. The ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th St., Mount Horeb, is serving the family. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family prefers donations made to Bethel Lutheran Church or the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association. Slinde, Robert 'Red'

STOUGHTON - Robert 'Red' LaVerne Slinde, age 64, passed away at his home in Stoughton on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008. He was born in Edgerton on Dec. 24, 1943, a son of LaVerne and Leona (Geske) Slinde. Red was a very sociable and well loved person, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an accomplished tennis player in his youth. He worked at Uniroyal for more than 30 years, and also worked as a bartender. He liked to be out and about when he could, and enjoyed horse racing, dog racing, and trips to Reno. He is survived by a son, Duane (Lisa) Slinde; a daughter, Dawna (Jeff) Furseth; four grandchildren, Erin, Erica, Cameron and Hannah; his father, LaVerne Slinde; a sister, Linda (Dennis) Fyan; an aunt, Evelyn Geske; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leona Slinde. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME in Stoughton, with the Rev. Richard Halom officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, from 4 p.m. to 7pm, and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Strock, Katherine "Kay" Louise (Tuell)

MERRIMAC - Katherine "Kay" Louise (Tuell) Strock, passed away to heaven on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, and joined her husband Justin and other family members who went ahead. She was born on Jan. 25, 1941, in Freeport, Ill., the daughter of Virginia G. (Branthaver) Tuell and Lawrence E. Tuell. Kay married Justin W. Strock on April 24, 1960. After moving to Merrimac, Wis., she and her husband owned and operated the K and D's Resort and Bait Shop and the K and D Supermart and Liquor Store. Kay obtained her brokers Real Estate license and practiced real estate for many years in the Merrimac area. Survivors include a son, Lawrence W. (Michelle) Strock; three beloved grandchildren, Ryann Elizabeth, Ashlynn Grace, and Kyle Alexander Strock; her mother, Virginia; two sisters, Carol (Steve) Nye and Sally Tuell; a brother, David (Sue) Tuell; and loving niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost 47 years, Justin W. "Dusty"; an infant son, Mark Edward Strock; and her beloved father, Lawrence Tuell. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the MERRIMAC UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Merrimac, with Scott Martin officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will take place in the Oak Hill cemetery in Merrimac, where she will be laid to rest beside her infant son Mark and husband Justin. Thomas, Emma Jean

STOUGHTON - Emma Jean Thomas, age 10, of Stoughton, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at home with her family surrounding her after a three-year battle with cancer. She was born on July 14, 1998, the daughter of Mike and Andrea (Meyer) Thomas. In her brief 10 years Emma was an inspiration to many and touched so many lives. Emma loved animals, swimming, art, music and playing with babies. Emma attended Yahara Elementary School in Stoughton. She always thought of others before herself. Emma's smile lit up the room. She had lots of friends and was very well liked. Emma is survived by her parents, Mike and Andrea Thomas of Stoughton; younger brother, Zachary; maternal grandparents, Richard and Nancy Meyer of Stoughton; paternal grandparents, David and Janet Thomas of Edgerton; great-grandparents, Eldon and Norma Audiss, and Viva Kotek, all of Endeavor; godparents, Jean and Kevin Johnson of Stoughton; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her aunt, Peggy Thomas; maternal great-grandfathers, Herbert Meyer and Elmer Kotek; and paternal great-grandparents, Richard and Alice Gaffney, and John and Grace Thomas. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL HOME, 1358 Hwy 51, Stoughton, on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 1 p.m. Burial will be held at Lutheran South cemetery. Uptegraw, Alice I.

BLUE MOUNDS - Alice I. Uptegraw, age 78 of Blue Mounds, died on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. She was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Eau Claire to Norman and Rose (Ebenhoe) Nelson. She married Harold L. Uptegraw on Oct. 28, 1945. Mr. Uptegraw preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 1974. She was a member of the West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church, and of its WELCA. Survivors include her children, James (Alice) Uptegraw of Mount Horeb, Ronald (Cynthia) Uptegraw of Monroe, Janice (Elmer) Brandt of Janesville, Roger (Jo Ellen) Uptegraw of Barneveld, Kenneth Uptegraw of Mount Horeb, Debbie (Gary) Friske, Mary Uptegraw-Landmark both of Blue Mounds; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Anna Marie) Nelson of Dodgeville; two sisters, Virginia Bowers and Patricia (Ray) Coyle both of Dubuque, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Gerald in 1986; a grandson, Jesse Uptegraw in 1990; a great-grandson, Christopher Shelton in 2007; two brothers, Donald and Larry Nelson; and three sisters, Betty Ball, Helen Eveland and Judith Cole. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the WEST BLUE MOUNDS LUTHERAN CHURCH with the Rev. John Twiton officiating. Altorfer, Kenneth Julius

ENGLEWOOD, FLA./ TOMAHAWK, WIS. - Kenneth Julius Altorfer, age 84, of Englewood, Fla. and Tomahawk, Wis. passed away Aug. 14, 2008, at the Harbor House Assisted Living Facility in Merrill, Wis. He was born in Chicago, Ill. on Nov. 9, 1922, to George and Mildred (Woehrle) Altorfer. On May 25, 1947, he married Bettie Penniston in Darlington, Wis. Ken graduated from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind. in 1940 as a first lieutenant in the Army Reserves. He served the 3rd Infantry Division as a platoon leader in Anzio, Italy in World War II, receiving the Bronze star for bravery in action, as well as the combat infantry badge. Ken graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1949 with a degree in horticulture/landscape architecture. After graduation, he joined McKay Nursery in Waterloo, Wis., and served as executive vice-president until his retirement in 1988. Ken was president of the Wisconsin Nurserymen's Association and was on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Nurserymen for six years, while serving as president from 1972-1973. During his presidency, he and Bettie were invited to the White House and met with President Nixon's wife. Ken enjoyed working with all the employees at the nursery and considered many of them friends. Even though Ken was born in Chicago, he considered himself a true Badgers fan, Packers fan, and Milwaukee Braves fan, as he did business with Eddie Matthews and Johnnie Logan. He enjoyed spending time with his family and had many wonderful trips to Florida with his wife, Bettie, in his retirement to the Englewood, Fla. area. They resided in Tomahawk in the summer months. Ken is survived by his wife, Bettie; two daughters, Janet (Larry) Anderson of Sun Prairie, Wis. and Judy (Ed) Privette of Merrill, Wis.; and grandsons, Aaron (Dawn) Anderson, Brett (Tiffany) Anderson, Cory (Holly) Anderson, Charlie Privette and Andy Privette. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; two stepmothers; many nieces and nephews; and many friends. He will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends. Bakken, Martin

MOUNT HOREB - Martin Bakken, age 102 of Mount Horeb, Wis., died on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Meriter Hospital in Madison. He was born on Jan. 17, 1906, in Norway. He came to the United States in 1930. Martin married Agnes T. Docken on Oct. 16, 1943, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 1991. He loved his Badgers and Green Bay Packers. Martin was a member of Perry Lutheran Church in Daleyville, Sons of Norway in Madison, and Madison Carpenters' Union Local No. 314. Survivors include several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his five brothers, Ivar, Johann, Ingwell, Ole, and Gunnar; and a sister, Ingri. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th Street, Mount Horeb, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Horeb Union cemetery. Friends may call from noon until 1:15 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials are preferred to Perry Lutheran Church in Daleyville. Brandt, Beatrice 'Bea'

MCFARLAND - Beatrice 'Bea' M. Brandt, age 89 of McFarland, passed away in Waukesha on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008. She was born in Blooming Grove on March 7, 1919, a daughter of the late Emil and Sadie (Barlow) Wold. She met Chester Brandt on the dance floor, and they were married and danced together for more than 64 years. Bea worked as a cook at the McFarland Schools, and sold Stanley products for many years. She had a wonderfully positive attitude and always found a reason to smile. She loved people, and she loved her family and their visits very much. Bea is survived by six children, Jerry (Naomi) Brandt of River Falls, Gordon (Carol) Brandt of McFarland, Patricia Martinelli of Fitchburg, Joyce (Gene) Kosbau of Cottage Grove, Victoria (Rich) Friedeck of Waukesha, and a foster daughter, Kathy Martin of Deerfield; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille; a brother, Bob; and sons-in-law, Carl Hopke and Emil Martinelli. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at MCFARLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5529 Marsh Road, McFarland with the Rev. Jerome Pribbenow officiating. Burial will follow at Upper McFarland cemetery. The family will greet friends at the OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME in McFarland on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again at church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Bredeson, Diana F.

FAYETTE - Diana F. Bredeson, age 61 of Fayette, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Sept. 10, 1946, the daughter of Earl B. and Anna F. (Quinn) Hagen in Argyle. Diana grew up on farms near Argyle and Blanchardville and worked at Yellowstone Lake when she met Donald Bredeson. She graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1964. Diana was united in marriage to Donald H. Bredeson on July 31, 1965, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Blanchardville. She and Don raised their four children while farming in Fayette. Diana also worked many years at Rossing's Department Store in Argyle and in the monogramming department at Lands' End. She was likewise active in her local community serving 19 years as Fayette Township treasurer and she was a long-time member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Diana was very skilled at sewing, quilting, cooking, lefse making and gardening, and she loved to go antiquing with her husband Don. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and many friends. Diana fondly remembered the travels she took with them to California, Arizona, New York and Ireland. She was a great conversationalist and had a wonderfully positive attitude, even during her battle with cancer that ended her time on earth much too soon. Diana is survived by her husband, Don; her four children, Jean (Ronald) Anderson of Fitchburg, William (Sheila) Bredeson of Fayette, Brian (Donna Garvey) Bredeson of Darlington, and Daniel Bredeson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kyle Perrin, Cody Bredeson, Hunter and Beau Bredeson; a brother, Michael (Deb) Hagen of Blanchardville; two sisters, Mary (Delvin) Mau of South Wayne and Shirley (Karlan) Johnson of Gratiot; brother-in-law, Harlan Bredeson; sisters-in-law, June Bredeson and Florence Bredeson; and many nieces and nephews. Diana was preceded in death by her parents, Earl on Aug. 24, 1996 and Annie on April 28, 1984; father and mother-in-law, George and Esther Bredeson; and brother-in-law, LaVerne Bredeson. Diana will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. We are all so thankful to have had her in our lives. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH in Argyle, with the Rev. David Wanish officiating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery, in Argyle Township. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at ERICKSON FUNERAL HOME, Argyle with a scripture service at 4 p.m. For those who prefer, a memorial fund has been established in Diana's name.
