Meadows, Janyce K.

STOUGHTON - Janyce K. Meadows, age 90, of Stoughton, formerly of Spirit Lake, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Stoughton Hospital. She was born on March 25, 1918, in Rockwell City, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick and Ortincy Beachamp. Janyce attended Rockwell City High School and Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. She taught school for a year and a half, before marrying Roy W. Meadows on May 18, 1940. They lived in New York City, Richmond, Va. and Washington, D.C., before returning to Grimes, Iowa. Janyce is survived by two sons, Brian (Michelle Huber) Meadows of Centennial, Colo. and Kim (Nancy) Meadows of Madison; three grandchildren, Kaye Aswegen of King George, Va., David (Kristin) Meadows of Naperville, Ill. and Lee (Joe) LaRue of Little Rock, Ark.; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Gwen Meadows of Naperville, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy. A gathering of family and friends will be held at SKAALEN HOME CHAPEL, 400 N. Morris St., Stoughton, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008. Burial will be at Sunny Hill cemetery, Grimes, Iowa, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Skaalen Home or American Cancer Society.

Miller, Catherine C.

EAST BRISTOL - Catherine C. Miller, age 91, died on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at the Columbus Hospital. She was born on March 29, 1917, in Cross Plains and was the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (Bollig) Brings. Catherine married Reinold Miller on Nov. 25, 1946, in East Bristol. Catherine, above all else, loved her family; she loved being a mother. She always spoke about her first husband Ray Haag with a twinkle in her eye. As a widow with three children she won her second husband's heart and they had seven more children. Her greatest gift to her children was her love and her legacy to them of personal responsibility and to always look forward, leaving misfortune and mishaps behind. Besides being a wonderful mother, she was a dedicated churchgoer. She belonged to the Christian Mothers and the Women Foresters, putting in many hours of volunteer work. She liked bowling, gardening, reading and card playing. She knew how to handle a rifle and was an accomplished sharpshooter. She wasn't always enthusiastic about cooking but was proud of her apple pies and made hundreds of them. They will be missed by her friends. She is survived by 10 children, Roger of Columbus, David (Joyce) of DeForest, Betty (Don) of Dardenne Prairie, Mo., Louis of Madison, Jim (Vickie) of East Bristol, John of East Bristol, Clem (Linda) of DeForest, Greg (Chris) of Marshall, Mary (Greg) of Fox Lake, and Steve (Faye) of East Bristol; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Celia (Leonard) Yelk and Betty Schulenburg both of Cross Plains. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Raymond in 1944 and Reinold in 1994; a grandson, Aaron Miller; four brothers, Francis, Clarence, Bernard and Louis; and three sisters, Bernadine, Leona and Rosina. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in East Bristol with Father Gary Wankerl presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at the TUSCHEN-NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie, and from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Saturday. The family would like to thank her doctors Rolf and Sam Poser for their kind and caring manner.

Rohner, Christine Kay

REEDSBURG - Christine Kay Rohner, age 55, of Reedsburg, died on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in the University Hospital in Madison. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Campbell of Reedsburg; many cousins including, Mary Cooper, David Hasenbach and Nancy Rohner-Hadded; along with her beloved puppies. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. in ST. JOHN EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, Reedsburg with Pastor David Glesne officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the FARBER FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg. Burial will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park in Racine. The family requests memorials of remembrance be made to Christine Rohner Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers.

Schey, Marion E.

MONONA - Marion E. Schey, age 67, passed away on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on Dec. 10, 1941, in Madison, the daughter of Carl and Eleanor (Hellpap) Erb. Marion attended Verona High School, graduating in 1959. She married Jerome Schey on Aug. 20, 1966, in Mount Vernon. Marion worked for Manchester's Department Store, the state of Wisconsin, Department of Natural Resources and Department of Administration, retiring in 1998. She had many hobbies and interests, including carving, quilting and her telephone chats with friends and fellow crafters. She was also a volunteer at the Monona Senior Center. Marion is survived by her husband, Jerome; daughter, Christine Schey of Madison; a son, Mark Schey of Monona; a granddaughter, Haley Schey of Monona; her sister, Doris (Beecher) Daniels; nephews, Dave (Linda) Daniels and Greg (Dawn Marie) Daniels; a niece, Brenda (Scott) Schuppe; cousins, Bonnie (Jeff) Parsons and Brian (Ken Scott) Bigler; and uncle, John G. Bigler. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at ST. STEPHEN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5700 Pheasant Hill Road, Monona, at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, with the Rev. Nick Utphall and the Rev. Tim Hansen presiding. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. until the time of services on Saturday, at the church. There will be a private burial at Mount Vernon cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Monona Senior Center or St. Stephen's Lutheran Church. A special thanks to Monona EMS, to the wonderful doctors and nurses at St. Mary's Hospital, and to Dr. Sarah Lowery and Dr. Sheryl Spitzer-Resnick at Wildwood Clinic.

Zell, Gene

GRINNELL, IOWA/ WAUSAU - Gene Zell, age 67, of Grinnell, Iowa and formerly of Wausau, died on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at his home. Survivors include his wife, Dee Dee Zell of Grinnell; a son, Todd Zell of Grinnell; and a daughter, Tonya (Sammy) Kuntz of Brooklyn. A scripture service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Grinnell. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at the Kroghville cemetery near Lake Mills. Memorials may be directed to the Gene Zell Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Burtness, Glen H.

ORFORDVILLE - Glen H. Burtness, age 93, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Orfordville, born on Aug. 1, 1915, the son of Elmer and Iva May (Setzer) Burtness. Glen married Dora Arnold on Aug. 3, 1940. She passed away on July 28, 1956. Glen and Geraldine Luehrsen were married Nov. 26, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2007. Glen grew up in Orfordville and in 1937 moved to Madison. While living in Madison, Glen "played for the house" at the local pool halls, and was employed for seven years at Gardner Bakery. In 1944, he joined his father Elmer Burtness in the family business, Burtness Chevrolet Inc., which was established in 1919. Upon the death of his father in 1956, he became sole owner and operator until his retirement in 1978. In 1964, Burtness Chevrolet, with Glen as owner, was featured in a General Motors' training film "How To Sell Value." Glen was the first independent owner of school buses in the Orfordville School District, and for 19 years owned and operated Burtness Transportation, Inc. Glen furnished automobiles for the Orfordville School District driver's training program and received a proclamation signed by Governor Patrick Lucy honoring him for this service since 1955. He was a member of the board of directors of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Orfordville since 1970. In 1983 he was an Honorary Parade Marshall for Orfordville's June Celebration Days, and in 1999 was Footville/ Orfordville Chamber of Commerce Honoree. As a longtime promoter of Orfordville, he served on various committees and boards in the Orfordville area. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 197, Janesville and New Horizon United Methodist Church. Glen was a past member of the Orfordville Community Development Corporation, Investment Club, National Automobile Dealer's Association and Janesville Elks Club Post 254. Glen is survived by his wife, Gerry; daughters, Sue Ann (Dennis) Belt of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Kay (Dennis) Marinelli of Beloit; a son, Jeffrey (Gina) Burtness of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two grandchildren, Rhonda (Ted) Wenzel and Robert (Angelia) Beutow, both of Boise, Idaho; five great-grandchildren, Erin and Eric Rowell, Jessica Wenzel, Linzy and Nicholas Beutow; his sister, Jeanette Burtness of Orfordville; many cousins; and a wealth of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Donald. There will be a visitation and memorial service at NEWCOMER-SILVERTHORN CHAPEL ON THE HILL, Highway 11 and South Coon Island Road, Orfordville, on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The memorial service will follow the visitation at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Maple Grove cemetery Association, or the family would simply request that anyone wanting to contribute would quietly help someone less fortunate - something Glen was good at.

Conner, Mary Jane

MADISON - Mary Jane Conner died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Capital Lakes Health Care Center. She was born on Aug. 8, 1922, in Waupun. Her family moved to Watertown where she graduated from high school and was active in First Congregational Church activities. She later lived in Elkhart, Ind., and moved to Madison in 1975, retiring from CarpetPlus of Wisconsin, formerly named Carpetland. Aunt Mary enjoyed her "grand" children; her brother's dogs, Ashlee and Taffy; the Red Hat club; and her English friends. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Howard and Eliza Conner. She is survived by her brother, Howard E. Conner of Madison; nephews, Daniel Conner (Marla) of Lake Mills, and Geoffrey Conner (Alison) of Madison; niece, Suzie Conner-Dieter (Daniel) of Madison; and grand nieces and nephew, Isabel and Hannah Conner, Julia and Lauren Conner-Dieter, and Martin Conner. The family will greet friends and share memories on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road. The family would like to thank the excellent staff at HospiceCare, Care Wisconsin and Capitol Lakes Health Center for their compassionate care. The family would also like to express gratitude to the residents at Rosewood Villas for their support and friendship to Mary Jane. Griffin, Patricia A.

MADISON - Patricia A. Griffin passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. Patty was born to Lloyd and Rachel (Reed) Griffin on July 15, 1951. Patty grew up in the Madison area, and graduated from Madison West High School in 1969. She then worked as a receptionist for the UW School of Music, where she had an opportunity to meet a number of prominent musicians, including the late Duke Ellington. Patty was a wonderful acoustic guitar player, and her lifelong love of music gave her a great deal of enjoyment. In 1971, Patty left her position at the School of Music, and traveled all over Europe for most of a year. Patty attended UW-Green Bay in 1972. She returned to Madison, where she did clerical work at the Hill Farms State Office Building. In recent years, Patty lived in an apartment on the West Side, volunteered at the Meriter Hospital medical library, and swam regularly at West Madison YMCA. She particularly enjoyed shopping trips to the Hilldale Shopping Center, and dinners and celebrations with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two brothers, James Griffin of Madison, and Thomas Griffin and his wife Kristi Tuescher of Waterloo and their daughter Hailey; and three nieces, Kelly Griffin and her fiance Mike Cornale of Dwight, Ill., Margaret Griffin of Watertown and her son Reed, and Amanda Griffin of Milwaukee and her son Evan. Patty made many friends over the years, and especially valued her ongoing contact with her high school friend, Rebecca Leidner. Patty's family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of the PACT Program, especially Dr. William Knoedler, for their many years of dedicated assistance to Patty. Burial for immediate family only will be Friday morning, Feb. 20, 2009, at the Forest Hill cemetery. The family would like to invite all to a memorial service for Patty, which will be held at BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH, Rowley Avenue, Madison, on Friday at 11 a.m. There will be a luncheon to follow. The family would ask any memorial contributions be made to PACT (Program for Assertive Community Treatment), c/o Carol Brommer, 600 Williamson St., Suite AB, Madison, WI 53703.

Harrison, Edward "Pop-Pop"

VERONA - Edward "Pop-Pop" Harrison, age 85, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Oregon Manor Nursing Home. Edward was born on July 19, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Albert and Mae (Sames) Harrison. He married Annetta Ferguson on Feb. 21, 1948, in Philadelphia. She preceded him in death on April 1, 1996, while living in Florida. Edward proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II. He worked for many years in the accounting department for Ford Motor Company before retiring in 1977. Edward enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, pitching horseshoes and bowling. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and especially, his great-grandchildren. He also was an avid Badgers, Eagles and Phillies fan. Edward is survived by his two children, Susan (Robert) McDonald of Madison, and Richard (Wanda) Harrison of Corolla, N.C.; five grandchildren, Deanna (Summit) Sanderson of Verona, Michelle (Jason) Brenson of Middleton, Jennifer (Sonny) Bowser of Columbus, Ohio, Richard (Carrie) Harrison Jr. of Newtown, Pa., and Christen Harrison of Corolla, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren, Isaac and Owen Sanderson, Landon Brenson, Sydney and Penelope Bowser, and Faith Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Annetta in 1996; and two sisters, Catherine Gay and Alberta Zietz. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH, 301 N. Main St., Verona, on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at noon. A visitation will also take place at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family to be used for a memorial in Ed's name at the Oregon Manor Nursing Home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Oregon Manor and to HospiceCare for the wonderful care and assistance they gave to Pop-Pop when he needed it the most.

MCFARLAND - Gerald O. "Gary" Hustad, age 63, of McFarland, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5306 Main St., McFarland, at noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, with Father D. Stephen Smith presiding.
