Kobs, Leona

MOUNT HOREB - Leona Kobs, age 93, passed away at Clare Bridge memory care facility in Middleton on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009. She was born Leona Emma Louise Kademan on Jan. 4, 1916, in Colby, to Edmund A. and Selma A. (Klessig) Kademan. She was united in marriage to Delos A. Kobs in Colby on Aug. 28, 1941. They moved to Mount Horeb in 1953. Delos, former superintendent of the Mount Horeb Area School District and former supervisor of pupil transportation for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, died on Feb. 27, 1997. Delos and Leona were active members of the Mount Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Leona was a member of the church's Women's Guild until she was unable to participate due to Alzheimer's disease. Leona enjoyed reading, arts, crafts, gardening, traveling, crossword puzzles, word games and card games. She belonged to bowling and golf leagues, and bridge clubs. She and Delos actively supported their daughters' church and school activities. Leona was a talented artist who seldom showed off her creations. Leona is remembered for her strong faith and for generously reaching out to others with her kindness and smile, even in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's. She is survived by her three daughters, Connee (Paul) Espe of Burt, Iowa, Mary (Paul) Williams of Janesville, and Rhonda (Rick) Nass of Prairie du Sac; six grandchildren, Rachel (Gordon) Bain of Fitchburg, Heather (Tim) Lounsbury of Mount Juliet, Tenn., David (Jodi) Espe of Broomfield, Colo., Keith (Michele) Espe of Mason City, Iowa, Jake (Michelle McGrorty) Wittwer of Monona, and Freddie Wittwer of Portland, Ore.; two stepgrandsons, Josh (Kelly) Williams of Janesville, and Nick (Stephanie) Williams of Carson City, Nev.; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her four brothers, Reuben, Harold, Ervin and Julius Kademan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at the MOUNT HOREB EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 315 E. Main St., with the Rev. John Twiton officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Horeb Union cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 10:55 a.m. on Friday at the MOUNT HOREB EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH. The Ellestad Funeral Home, 500 N. 8th St., in Mount Horeb is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mount Horeb Historical Society.

Olson, Vera A.

FORT ATKINSON - Vera A. Olson of Fort Atkinson passed away on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, with her children by her side. She was an accountant for most of her adult life. She owned her own tax service for 25-plus years. She is survived by her 10 children, Ken (Colleen) Olson, Karen (Rosie) Olson, Bobbi Olson, Dee Grandt, Vickie (Lon) Sherman, Kim Lopez, Dawn Nevin, Pam Mepham, Toby Nevin and Patti (Dave) Garrett; 26 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Phillip and Norman; her sister, Paula; and many dear nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at NITARDY FUNERAL HOME in Fort Atkinson from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. A memorial service will follow.

Peckham, Walter L.

LODI - Walter L. Peckham, age 77, died on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at University Hospital in Madison. He was born on Nov. 17, 1931, in Columbus, to Helen Soward and was raised by Merton and Mildred Peckham. Walt lived in Wisconsin Dells, New Lisbon, Union Center and graduated from Elroy High School in 1950. He became an Eagle Scout in New Lisbon and later was a Cub Scout leader and Boy Scout leader in DeForest. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 to 1954. He was a member of Madison VFW Post 7591 and the Elroy American Legion Post 115. Walt married Charleen Ormson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Elroy on Aug. 4, 1956. During their marriage he and Charleen lived in Belvidere, Ill., Poplar Grove, Ill., Madison, DeForest and Lodi. Walt loved sports and he bowled and played softball in many leagues. He retired from the Madison Post Office in 1991 after 28 years of service. He loved to help others and did not expect anything in return. Walt always wanted to live in the country and lived the last 10 years of his life on a hill overlooking Lake Wisconsin, outside of Lodi. Walt is survived by his wife, Charleen; daughters, Terry and Lori (Jeff) Wenger and grandchildren, Aaron and Ashley; son, Bruce (Nancy Jo) and grandchildren, Katelyn and Dylon; and the Peckham, Borde and Soward families. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim; and parents, Mert and Mildred Peckham. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the WINN-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 5785 County Road Q, Waunakee with military rites. Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also call on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the Fountain Lutheran cemetery in Elroy at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Miller, Dr. Cornwell, Dr. Traynor, all of the support staff, and especially the UW RT Dept.; and all our friends and families for their prayers and support. Potter-Wagner, Donna Jo

WISCONSIN DELLS - Donna Jo Potter-Wagner, age 60, of Wisconsin Dells, joined her parents, Donald and Josephine Potter in God's care on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009. After a short illness she passed from life at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center in Madison. Donna graduated from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee and found work as a medical assistant/ receptionist to Dr. Ben Vondrack of OBGYN Associates in Milwaukee. She worked in the medical field as a receptionist for more than 40 years. Donna's happy attitude and caring nature was just what the patients needed in their time of need. Donna loved her job and her many co-workers. She was known to keep her friends forever and she had more than 50 people she considered as close friends. Donna is survived by her husband, Donald of Wisconsin Dells; and her much loved puppy, Waggs. Her other family members include Mrs. Dorothy Kapusta and children of Milwaukee; Mrs. Ethel Cernicka of Milwaukee; Mr. Fred Mlados of Union Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Don Blaha and children of Waukesha; Mr. Dick Blaha and children of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Petrie and children of Menomonee Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Keller and children of Oshkosh; Mrs. Ella Schmidt of Oshkosh; Mr. Paul Schmidt and children of Oshkosh; and Mrs. Dorothy Bolder and Francis Kapusta of Antigo. She will also be deeply missed by the many friends and neighbors that she knew and laughed with over the years. May God keep her forever happy. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at ST. CECILIA CATHOLIC CHURCH in Wisconsin Dells with Father Arnold Reuter celebrating. PARDEEVILLE - Ethel B. Grueneberg Schoengrund, age 88, of Pardeeville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Remington House, Pardeeville. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at ZION EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH in Columbus. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. Stevens, Thomas J.

DEERFIELD - Thomas J. "TJ" Stevens was stillborn on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at 11:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Hospital. TJ was a beautiful baby who will be forever loved by his parents, Kevin and Jennifer Stevens; and his big brother and sister, Jonathan and Elizabeth. We are humbled by the caring and kindness of the St. Mary's nursing staff, the Dean and Wildwood Clinic doctors, the Cress Funeral and Cremation Service personnel, and the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep photographer who all helped us through TJ's loss. We will be eternally grateful to our family and friends whose constant prayers and acts of kindness have comforted and supported us throughout the grieving process. TJ will be deeply missed by a large extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. A Memorial Mass will be held at ST. PLATTEVILLE/ GALENA, ILL. - Betty L. Swallow, age 81, of Platteville, formerly of Galena, Ill., died on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Southwest Health Center Hospital, Platteville. Vogt, Jerry Charles

MADISON - Jerry Charles Vogt passed away on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009. He was born on April 25, 1948, in St. Charles, Ill., to Robert and Helen Vogt. Jerry never married , and has no children. Jerry received a spinal cord injury in May 1969, yet throughout his life pursued an active role in living life like others. His often dry-humored, critical, wise-guy perspective was a source of humor and instigation. Some of his materialistic accomplishments included owning his own home, driving his own vehicle and working at several jobs. After graduating from UW-Madison with a master's degree in urban and regional planning, Jerry started his own business called Achievement through Disability Awareness (ADA), through which he reported on solutions to physical access in housing, commercial facilities and private businesses. In 1995 Jerry worked as the Americans with Disabilities Act technical assistant for the State of Wisconsin. He served on the Wisconsin Use Board beginning in 1993, he taught sensitivity training to taxicab and van drivers in Madison, and beginning in 1989 he co-taught occupational therapy students at the Madison Area Technical College. Deeply involved in employment issues, Jerry was on the board of the Economic Benefits Through Individual Disabled Employment (EBTIDE), a group which had unrecognized, significant impact on the long-term care delivery system in Wisconsin. Jerry was on the advisory board for the Medical Assistance Personal Care Program, Sports Programs, Arts Run Take Alliance and the Employment Resources Inc. Dane County Initiatives (employment) Project. He served on the Madison Commission for People with Disabilities. His sunny disposition and upbeat personality made an impression on everyone he met, and he will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. Survivors include brothers, Joseph Paul of Houston, Texas, James Robert and Doreen of Western Springs, Ill., and John Henry and Sandy of Freeport, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews who loved him. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother and father, Helen and Robert Vogt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ACCESS to Independence, Inc. or Habitat for Humanity of Dane County, both of Madison. An open house to share memories of Jerry's life will be held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison.

Walker, Donald H.

SAUK CITY/ BELVIDERE, ILL. - Donald H. Walker, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, with his longtime friend and companion, Sarah, holding his hand. He was born in Janesville on June 4, 1932, the son of the late Stuart H. and Kathryn Ann (Burrows) Walker. Donald was a licensed electrician, but also worked at many varied jobs throughout his life, most recently at Fahey Pumps and Electric in Stoughton, before his retirement. And, as his grandchildren know, he could fix anything. A Memorial Service will be held at CONCORDIA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 585 5th St., Prairie du Sac, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, with Pastor Jeff Virchow officiating. Friends may call at the church after 10 a.m. The family wishes to express its deep thanks and love to Sarah Beffa, who cared for him so diligently during his courageous fight.

Behnke, Leonard W.

WAUPACA - Leonard W. Behnke, age 86, of Waupaca, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Crystal River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waupaca. He was born in the town of Royalton, Waupaca County on Sept. 6, 1922, a son of the late Henry and Ida (Ziemer) Behnke. Leonard married Darlyne Tyrrell on Sept. 1, 1945, in Manawa. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1989. He was comptroller for the State Historical Society in Madison from November 1953 until April 1983. Leonard was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waupaca. Survivors include his children, Gary (Marlene) Behnke of Waupaca and Gail (Jerome) Stephany of Lomira; grandchildren, Tom (Ameleah) Behnke of New Lenox, Ill., Sally (Fiance' Kyle Kenney) Behnke of Ogdensburg, Fred (Noel) Stephany of Hortonville, Dan (Melissa) Stephany of Oostburg amd Mary Stephany of LaCrosse; great-grandchildren, April Behnke, Samuel Behnke, Luke Behnke, Sarah Behnke, Ben Behnke, Micah Stephany, Ty Stephany and Owen Stephany; sister, Verona (Wayne) Fink of Waupaca; and sister-in-Law, Califern (Donald) Schleh of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlyne; three brothers, Herbert, Clarence and Louis; and a sister, Lillian Niemi. Funeral Services will be held at IMMANUEL EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1120 Evans St. in Waupaca at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009, with the Rev. Jeffrey Holtan and the Rev. Aaron Winkelman officiating. Interment will be in the Little Wolf cemetery, town of Little Wolf. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2009, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the HOLLY FUNERAL HOME in Waupaca and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Blendow, Robert A.

SUN PRAIRIE - Robert A. Blendow, age 88, died on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Haack's Tendercare in Sun Prairie. He was born on Dec. 4, 1920 in Chicago, Ill. and was the son of Otto and Minnie (Benke) Blendow. He married Ardelle Warren on July 3, 1954, in Antioch, Ill. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in Guam. He worked for Stewart-Warner Corp. as a tool and die maker for 47 years. He is survived by his wife, Ardelle; his children, Kathleen (Alden) Moe of Sun Prairie, Cindy (Jerry Taulbee) Felish of LaMoille, Ill., Robert (Julie) Blendow of Inverness, Ill., Gary Blendow, Gail (Ron) Swegels both of Sunnyvale, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Williamson; and three brothers, Wilbert, Otzy and Harvey. Funeral Services will begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at THE TUSCHEN-NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie. Pastor Tom Edwards will preside. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home on Wednesday. Military honors will be held at the funeral home after the service. The family would like to thank Haack's Tendercare (Ann and Jamie and staff) of Sun Prairie for their dedicated loving care.
