Larry Polzak
Larry Polzak, long-time Green Bay resident and self-described "farm boy" turned agricultural pioneer, died Saturday at Bellin Memorial Hospital of complications following nine years of Alzheimer's disease. He had resided since 1996 at Fairfield Home in De Pere. He was 89.

He was born Laurence Anthony Polzak on May 29, 1913, the oldest son and second of five children of Stanley and Stella Plazk of Neva Corners in Antigo, Wis. A child of the Great Depression, Larry was the first in his community to graduate college, pursuing plant genetics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison starting in 1934. He married Lorena Cowgill of Madison, his college sweetheart, in 1939 following graduation. They had seven children during a 23-year marriage.

During World War II, Mr. Polzak was crops coordinator at canneries in Merton and Marshfield, Wis. The family moved to Howard in 1949 when he became agricultural manager for the old Larsen canning company on North Broadway. Larry was a man of creative vision who could see in things and people the workings of a cohesive whole. In fall 1950 he bought the Seventh-Day Adventists' parsonage, a large unwanted Victorian-era house on South Oakland Avenue, and had it moved on wheels a mile up the street to a vacant lot he had purchased at 816 Division Street. The same kind of innovation pervaded his work. In 1952 he volunteered Larsen fields as one of six test sites nationwide for an experimental mechanical green bean harvester being developed by the Chisholm-Ryder Company. Working with the manufacturers, Mr. Polzak devised a process for breeding, planting, growing and harvesting green beans that made maximum use of the new machines. At the National Canners' Association's semi-centennial convention in 1957, Mr. Polzak presented his new bean-harvesting method. His concept was hailed as a break-through in agricultural technology. He also described the revolutionary process locally in an interview with Les Sturmer on WBAY Channel 2's weekday Noon Show. He retired in 1969 from Larsen Co. and did canning crops consulting for the next several years.

Mr. Polzak was married to Wilma Bancroft of Green Bay for 15 years. In the years following his retirement Larry was active in charitable and community service work. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, and volunteered at Paul's Pantry, Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels.

Mr. Polzak is survived by a sister, Beatrice Lajza, of Tomahawk, Wis.; by three daughters, Lori Polzak and Rosemary Bolas of Chicago and Alice Dalebroux of Green Bay; by four sons, Peter of Chicago, Tom of San Francisco, Tim of Howard and Tony of Washington, D.C.; and by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, De Pere, until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Wencel of Neva Church north of Antigo.

RYAN FUNERAL HOME, De Pere, is assisting with the arrangements.
