Nelda Ahl (nee Stephani)
Nelda Ahl (nee Stephani) died on July 23 after a long struggle with cancer. Her gentle spirit and unfailing optimism will be sorely missed by her loving family and friends. She was a native of Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945. She then graduated from the Wisconsin College of Cosmetology in Milwaukee. She later attended classes at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

She married Gerald Ahl in Manitowoc in 1950 and they lived in Milwaukee and Manitowoc, Wis., before settling in Green Bay. She was devoted to her husband and children and entered the workplace after the children all entered school. She began her working life at SS. Peter & Paul School as a librarian and eventually worked for the Wisconsin Job Service - Unemployment Division until she retired in 1992. Both Nel and Jerry then began an interesting post-retirement stint with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) putting them on call for natural disasters all over the country for over eight years. They both enjoyed their travels and the friends they made working in that capacity. She was a long-time volunteer with the Lac Baie Council of Girl Scouts and served as a troop leader for both her daughters and grand-daughter. She also assisted in district events and served as a local Cookie Sale Chairman for several years. She was active in her faith and served at SS Peter & Paul, Resurrection and St. Louis parishes in many capacities.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Cathy Huntowski (Wes Schumaker) and Ellen Vanden Avond (Lee), both of Green Bay, Lori Ahl (John Harrington), Fountain City, Wis., Tessie Renard (Tom), Necedah, Wis., Joanne Jensen (Jim), Big Lake, Minn., Andrew Ahl (Jackie Powell), Green Bay, and Christine Ahl-Ludwig (Rick), Waukesha, Wis. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Stasch Huntowski (Karen) and Kasha Huntowski, Green Bay, Todd and Tami Renard, Necedah, Wis., Nicholas, Benjamin and Lucas Jensen, Big Lake, Minn., as well as two great-grandchildren, Samson and Aiden Huntowski. She leaves behind two dear sisters, her twin Natalie Moser (Dale), Heathsville, Virginia, and Rita Hranika, Manitowoc, Wis., and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted, faithful friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillian Stephani, numerous aunts and uncles and most recently by her beloved spouse of 52 years, Gerald. May the Lord watch over them together in eternity.

Visitation will be held at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., Green Bay, Wis., from 4-8 pm Sunday, July 27, with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Louis Church in Dykesville, Wis., on Monday, July 28.

It is her wish to be cremated and interment of both Gerald and Nelda's remains will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society, Unity Hospice or the Lac Baie Girl Scout Council would be sincerely appreciated.

Our mother was one of those rare people who maintained an innocent goodness throughout her entire life. Never one to have a bad word about anyone she would look for, and find, the good in everyone. She set an example as a mother, sister and friend that we who mourn her passing can only hope to attain. She was a true ray of sunshine in a sometimes gloomy world and her spirit always held hope and prayer. She was our most enthusiastic cheerleader and we will all struggle and pray to find our own way to carry on her and Dad's legacy of hope, charity and love.

Her prayer three and a half years ago was answered when she asked to survive her cancer three or four more years. Her family has such admiration for her awesome strength, faith and inspiration, even through the last moments of her life. The endless meals she prepared for her family gatherings were a cornerstone of our strong family ties. Catherine was born on May 8, 1921, in Green Bay to the late Peter and Mary (Frisque) Draye. She was married for 62 years to Martin Spitzer, who aided in her comfort to the very end. Catherine loved to cook for her entire family, shop for all her loved ones and gardening. Catherine's family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Peter Falk not only for his surgical expertise but for the moments of prayer with Catherine before her surgery. We would like to give special thanks to Dr. Paul Koch for dedicating his life to treating cancer patients, his personal chair-side manner, and his ability to inspire hope. We would also like to thank Dr. A.J. Stankevych, Dr. Pamela Baeten, the incredible nursing staff at Green Bay Oncology, Unity Hospice, and the many people who offered kind words and prayers.

What Cancer Cannot Do: It cannot cripple Love, shatter Hope, corrode Faith, destroy Peace, kill Friendship, suppress Memories, silence Courage, invade the Soul, steal Eternal Life, or conquer the Spirit.
