Josephine Buchanan Lenfestey
Josephine Buchanan Lenfestey died June 26 at her home surrounded by her family after a short illness. Josephine Buchanan Lenfestey is a life-long resident of Northeast Wisconsin whose leadership and philanthropy have extended her influence and caring throughout and beyond Wisconsin.

She was born on Feb. 21, 1908, in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her parents, Josephine Pond Buchanan and Gustavus Eugene (Gus) Buchanan, were well known in the Fox Valley business and social community. Mrs. Lenfestey's siblings were William E. (Bill) Buchanan, who at the time of his death in 1993 was a prominent Fox Valley businessman (Appleton Wire, Albany International, Fox Valley Corporation), civic leader and philanthropist; Betty Jean Buchanan McClure of Appleton, who was active in community life, artistic and crafts endeavors; and James Buchanan, a Fox Valley businessman until his early death at age 45.

Mrs. Lenfestey was educated in Appleton public schools, graduating as the valedictorian of her high school class; at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., earning her baccalaureate in 1931 with a major in history and minor in drama; and at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., where she did post-graduate work in the field of speech re-education.

Following professional work as a speech re-education teacher at Horace Mann High School in Gary, Indiana , she returned to Wisconsin and in 1937 married Frederick J. (Ted) Lenfestey of De Pere. Their 48 years of married life focused on family and an array of community activities in Green Bay and De Pere, and later in Delray Beach, Florida, where they wintered.

Her interest in civic causes, the performing arts, gardening and historic preservation are reflected in the service activities to which she has devoted her life.

For many years, Mrs. Lenfestey was perhaps best known for her work as local president of the League of Women Voters and as a member of the state LWV Board of Directors. Her service with others on the Tank Cottage Committee and boards of the De Pere and State historical societies culminated in projects - often led by the late Amanda Cobb - to assemble the area's historically important buildings in the setting that became Heritage Hill State Park. Childhood lessons in elocution set the stage for a lifelong interest in drama. She pursued this with college productions, a decade of play readings, service on the Community Theater Board and onstage, several costume shows and play reviews in Green Bay and Appleton.

Her love of gardening and garden design is evident at her homes in De Pere and on the bay shore. She has shown her gardening talent in a more public way at Pilgrim Congregational Church, where she had the lead role in developing the garden, and through work with the Garden Club des Peres.

Mrs. Lenfestey has carried on a family tradition of philanthropy. She and her late husband are well-known at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as members of the Founders Association and through their generosity to the university's first capital campaign. Two campus residence halls bear their names, and dressing rooms of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts are named for them. In July 2002, the Lenfestey Family Courtyard was dedicated at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Mrs. Lenfestey has philanthropically supported other regional organizations and causes including Lawrence University, the National Railroad Museum, Pamiro Opera, Green BayÐDe Pere YWCA, Pilgrim Congregational Church and Heritage Hill State Park, where she was a founding member of the Heritage Hill Cotton Club.

Beyond Wisconsin, Mrs. Lenfestey's support of the performing arts is recognized in Florida, where the auditorium of the Delreay Beach Playhouse bears her name. Her commitment to higher education has aided her alma mater, Vassar College, as well. For seven years she worked as a fund-raiser for her Vassor Class of '31, leading it at the 50th reunion to a gift total surpassing any other class in the college's history.

The Lenfestey family today includes her children and their families, Josephine (Jodey) Lenfestey, San Francisco, California, Carolyn (Lynn) Fey, Park City, Utah, who is married to Thomas Fey and is the mother of Josephine (Jodey) Fey-Schmidt, Caroline Fey and Thomas Hossler Fey Jr., James Lenfestey, Minneapolis, Minnesota, who is married to Susan Williams and is the father of James Pond Lenfestey, Zara Lenfestey, Nathaniel (Max) Lenfestey, and Dora Lenfestey. The younger James Lenfestey resides in Sante Fe, New Mexico, with his wife Laurie and their children William and Olivia. Zara Lenfestey is married to James Kublin, M.D. They are the parents of sons August (Gus) and Henno.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 991 Pilgrim Way, Green Bay. There will no visitation the day of the funeral.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Scott Naevestad officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery, De Pere. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church or the National Railroad Museum.
