Alvin H. Gillis
Alvin H. Gillis, 87, Green Bay, died at home early Thursday morning, June 26, 2003, surrounded by his family. Born in Dyckesville on June 19, 1916, he is the son of the late Louis and Frances (Bouche) Gillis. Al was an accountant receiving his degree at Green Bay Business College. He was employed at Dean Foods (formerly Green Bay Food Company) as a comptroller retiring in 1981. Al married the former Doris DeBaker on June 19, 1941, at St. Louis Church in Dyckesville and she preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 2003. Al's greatest challenge was being a compassionate caregiver for his beloved wife Doris who had MS for 56 years. He will be dearly remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father. Al was a longtime member of SS. Peter & Paul Church and throughout his life active as an Usher, Eucharistic Minister and Senior server. He was a member of the SS. Peter & Paul Holy Name Society, Perpetual Adoration, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Council #10552, SS. Peter & Paul Family Prayer Night Treasurer and Blue Army Treasurer. He was a lay communicator for nursing homes and hospitals and member of the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE), Green Bay Experienced Traffic Club, Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, Golden Kiwanis, Serra Club and active in the Republican Party.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Marilyn Gillis of Brookfield; one daughter-in-law, Susan Gillis of New Berlin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Joe Hollister, Karen and Mark Lepp, all of Green Bay; 15 grandchildren, Jill, Kerry, Greg, Paula, David, Rick, Cathy, Carolyn, John, Brad, Tricia, Karin, Brandon, Christian, and Karissa; 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Gillis of Green Bay, Orville (Rosie) Gillis of Luxemburg; one sister, Verna (Clarence) Dorner of Green Bay;sisters-in-law, Doris Gillis of Green Bay, Verna (Dean) Thiry of Casco, Beatrice DeBaker of Green Bay; brothers-in-law, Gilbert DeBaker of Dyckesville, Edsel (Dorothy) DeBaker of Oconto Falls, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris; parents; their son, Robert Gillis in 2001; one brother, Irvin Gillis.
Visitation at MALCORE Funeral Home Funeral Home, University Avenue at Baird Street, from 4-8 p.m. Sunday. Parish wake service 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home by Sister Loretta and the SS. Peter & Paul Knights of Columbus Council #10552. Ladies Altar Society rosary will be recited in the church prior to the funeral in church. Visitation will continue Monday morning before the funeral in church. Funeral Monday 10 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Church with Rev. Dave Pleier and Rev. John Van Der Horst concelebrating. Entombment in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.
Special thanks to his very dear friend and companion Rev. John Van Der Horst, Rev. Tom Farrell, Sister Loretta and all his prayer family at SS. Peter & Paul Family Prayer Night who have been praying for him constantly. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in his memory.

Helen B. Platten
Helen B. Platten passed away on Wednesday, June 25, after a short illness. Helen was born in Niagara, Wis., to Arthur and Gertrude (Baril) Brown. Her family moved to De Pere where she was living when she met and married Peter M. Platten. For most of their married life, Peter and Helen lived on Green Bay's West Side. They spent dozens of lively summers with friends and family at Point Comfort.
Helen was a multi-talented woman whose wide range of interests included the arts (singing and painting), art instruction, horse shows, golf, real estate and a variety of women's issues. Helen was always willing to lend a helping hand to people and causes she believed in.
Helen was an accomplished artist whose work was displayed in more than 40 states. Her paintings won many awards in juried shows, and are represented in several private and public collections nationwide. In 1967, Helen and Peter began the development of the Indian Trails subdivisions, one of the first planned communities in Northeast Wisconsin.
Helen was a member of the Oneida Golf and Riding Club, Green Bay Art Colony, Zonta, YMCA Women of Vision, the Brown County Historical Society, the Neville Public Museum, Green Bay-De Pere Antiquarians and the Reed Street Athletic Club.
Helen's greatest interest in her life was her children who survive her; Peter M. Platten III (Bonnie), Pati Ericson (Jim), Anne Lemke (Larry) and Jane Platten Van Lanen (Larry). Her beloved grandchildren are Carolyn Liebhauser, Peter M. Platten IV, Christopher Platten, John B. Torinus III (Sean), Dan Torinus, Melissa Lemke, Mark Lemke, Liza Van Lanen and Livvie Van Lanen. Helen has eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister in law, Marion Brown; three nephews, Russell, Barry and Steve Brown; and many wonderful friends.
We extend a heartfelt thanks to all who offered comfort and support to Helen and to us during this difficult time, most especially to Joan Bauder, Barb Vanden Busch, Shellie Berg, Mary Jo Solie and Marilyn Wilsman; you are all amazing! We are also very thankful to the doctors and nurses who cared for Helen, especially Dr. Kim Davis and the emergency room and pastoral staff at St. Vincent's Hospital. Your kindness was memorable.
Helen was preceded in death by her wonderful husband, Peter; her parents; and her brothers, Arthur and Russell.

Michael H. Hornick, 80, Howard, passed away at home on Monday, June 23, 2003, with his family by his side.
His immediate family survivors include his wife, Betty, Howard; children, Ken (Mary Alice) Hornick, Howard, Paul Hornick, Greg (Theresa) Hornick, Nancy (Robert) Cooney, Mark (Karen) Hornick, Janette (Ron) Gass, all of Green Bay; one daughter-in-law, Sandra Hornick, Green Bay; grandchildren, Luanna (Jason) Schaut, Adam and Patrick Hornick, April Hornick, Lisa and Emily Hornick, Matt Hornick and fiancee Andrea, Holly and fiance Nathan, Bryan (Jessica) Cooney, Sarah (Chris) Knier, Angela Cooney, Justine, Stacey and Katie Hornick; one great granddaughter, Olivia Schaut.

Helen E. Tuyls
Helen E. Tuyls, 90, Green Bay resident, died Monday June 23, 2003, at a local nursing home. She was born in Green Bay on April 26, 1913, to the late Joseph and Anna (Hoffman) Schlag. Helen graduated from East High School class of 1930. On September 3, 1934, she married Byron J. Tuyls at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. They enjoyed 60 years together. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1995. Helen was a lifelong Green Bay resident and with her husband owned and operated Tuyls Grocery Store and later Tuyls Real Estate. She was a member of Annunciation Parish and their Altar Society. Helen was also a member of the Catholic Women's Club for many years. She was a devoted and loving mother whose happiest times were spent with her family.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Paul Sinkler, Green Bay, Judy and Allan Utendorf, Arlington Heights, Ill.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Donna Tuyls, and Jim and Patti Tuyls, all of Green Bay; seven grandchildren, Steve (Maryann) Sinkler, Clive, Iowa, Paula (Dave) Sadler, Des Moines, Iowa, Mark (Janice) Utendorf, Palatine, Ill., Cheryl (Neil) Swindells, Algonquin, Ill., Gregg Tuyls, Chicago, Ill., Karen Tuyls and Amelia Tuyls, both Green Bay; five great grandchildren, Kayla Bowcutt, Chloe and Jack Swindells, Matthew Sadler and Max Utendorf; one sister, Margaret Lorenzoni; and one sister-in-law Esther Tuyls, both Green Bay; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence, and brothers Norbert and Clarence Schlag.
Friends may call at Annunciation Catholic Church, 401 Gray St., after 9 a.m. Saturday until time of mass. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Mike Ingold officiating. Entombment in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. Proko-Wall Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy a memorial fund has been established in her name.

Mary Wanic
Mary Wanic, 92, Pulaski died Monday, June 23, 2003, at a Green Bay nursing home following a short illness.
The daughter of the late William and Mary Gazda was born March 25, 1911, in Michigan. She married Adam Wanic. The couple farmed in Sobieski until their retirement at which time they moved to Pulaski. She had been a member of the Rosary Society of Assumption B.V.M. Parish in Pulaski for several years. Mary enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and she liked polkas. She truly enjoyed the company of her favorite dog, Benji.
Survivors include one sister, Sophie Cash, of Green Bay, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Adam, and her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Jacob, Frank and John Gazda; and four sisters, Josephine Falkowski, Clara Bolden, Rose Dostal and Anna Phillips. Friends may call at Assumption B.V.M. Church, Pulaski after 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, Fr. Patrick Gawrylewski, O.F.M. presiding with burial in the parish cemetery. Marnocha Funeral Home, Pulaski, is assisting the family with arrangements.
James C. Webster
James C. Webster, age 33, Stevens Point, formerly of De Pere, died at home in Stevens Point after a courageous 13-year struggle adjusting to a heart transplant. James was born January 28, 1970, in Green Bay to Cletus Webster and the late Arlyss (Jordan) Webster. James' strength and bravery in facing medical challenges was much admired. His new heart had provided James opportunities to experience an active life. He earned a black belt in karate, and was an avid hunter and Packer fan.
Survivors include his grandparents, Alvira and Donald Wishart; aunt, CarolSilva; cousin Anthony Silva; uncle, Terry Jordan (Josephine); great uncles, Gordon Wishart (Geraldine), Harold King (Beatrice) and Luke Stevens; his very special friend and companion, Betsy Jacobson; father, Cletus Webster (Kathy); half-brother, Joseph Webster; half-sister, Julie (Webster) Schweiner (Jason); and his niece, Abigail Schweiner; step-sister, Jenny Hanson; and step-brothers, Jon Miller and Ben Webster; his paternal uncles, Ken Webster (Susan), Adam Webster (Sandy, Deceased); his paternal aunts, Alice Smith (Carrol, deceased), Charlotte Walschinski (Mark), Mary Prescott (Duane), Genevieve Gollnick (Bill), Teyulelu Debra Cornelius (Weston), Catherine Webster; and many cousins.
James was preceded in death by his mother; aunt, Connie (Webster) Delgado (Joseph); and uncles, Kelly Jordan, Lavern Webster (Rita), Gerald Webster (Jackie), and Tom Webster.
Friends may call from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME, De Pere, with Oneida Indian Singing at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Oneida, until the time of service at 10 a.m. with Rev.
