Myron “Mike” Ross

PARK FALLS — Myron J., “Mike” Ross, 81, of Park Falls, died Friday, October 11, 2002 at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls.

He was born on September 3, 1921 in Freeport, Ill., the son of William and Charlotte (Dultsman) Ross. On June 5, 1947 he married Alice Simler in Freeport, Ill. He farmed all of his life and retired in 1981 moving to Connors Lake in Winter and then in 1989 moving to Park Falls.

He is survived by his wife Alice of Park Falls; a sister Irene Spencer of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister-in-law Louise Simler of Park Falls; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ruth Krahmer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Falls. Rev. Scot O'Connor will officiate.

Burial will follow at Nola Cemetery in Park Falls.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church.

Corinne Lindstrom

Corinne Jane Lindstrom, age 81, of Ashland, died Friday, October 11, 2002 at Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 8, 1921, in Amery, Wis., the daughter of Nils V. and Emma J. (Moen) Sandin.

She graduated from Ashland High School in 1938 and later went to school at the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. She married Ragnar "Rug" Lindstrom on August 9,1947, in Ashland. Corinne worked as a secretary for the Great Lakes Indian Agency, the Ashland County Social Services Department and Tomlinson Construction. After her retirement, she helped at the Windmill Gallery in Ashland. She was a member of Saron Lutheran Church, Saron Lutheran Church Women, Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary and the Elks Club No.137. Corinne enjoyed playing cards, traveling, golfing, bowling, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and most of all she had a very strong faith in God.

She is survived by two daughters; Esther Marie (James) Pufall, Ashland, and Joann (Eric) Swanson, Kewaunee, Wis.; four grandchildren: Franklin, Leo, Emily and Douglas, plus nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ragnar on July 18, 1987, a brother, Howard; a sister, Esther Marie Sandin; and an infant grandson, David.

Due to construction at Saron Lutheran Church, the funeral service will be held, Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Ashland, with Rev. James Kasperson officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 -7 p.m. Monday at the Frost Home For Funerals and will continue one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Burial will be in the Mt Hope Cemetery in Ashland.

Memorials may be made to the Saron Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Twila Pelto

RHINELANDER — Twila Lorraine Pelto, 82 of Rhinelander, formerly of Ashland, died Saturday, October 12, 2002 at the Taylor Park Nursing Home in Rhinelander. She was born January 18, 1920 in Staples, Minn., the daughter of Leonard and Marie (Gorman) Hanson.

Twila spent her younger years in the Staples, Minnesota area. She married Eugene S. Pelto in October,1946 in Hurley. They lived many years in the Hurley area on the family homestead. Eugene preceded her in death on August 10, 1970. In 1961, they moved to Ashland. She was a member of the Saron Lutheran Church in Ashland. In 1998, she moved to Rhinelander, to be closer to her daughter. Twila's enjoyment in life was caring for their six children.

She is survived by five children: James (Lonni) Pelto, Richfield, Ohio; Donald Pelto, Hill City, South Dakota; Donna (Richard) Schneider, Chippewa Falls; Judith England, Sayner, and Floyd "Ted" Margaret) Gertz, Racine; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Patricia Rindal and a grandson, Anthony J. Munich III.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 17, 2002 at the Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland. with Rev. James Kasperson officiating.

Inurnment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.,Thursday, at the funeral home.

Robert Holmes

Robert Henry Holmes Jr., 91, formerly of the Town of Gingles, died Friday, October 11, 2002 at Mellen Manor Nursing Home in Mellen. He was born May 5, 1911 in Marengo, the son of Robert Sr. and Sadie (Longbottom) Holmes.

He was a lifelong resident of Ashland County, living in Cozy Valley until 1944, the Town of Gingles from 1944 to 1997, and a resident of Court Manor in Ashland for a few years and most recently a resident of Mellen Manor in Mellen. He enjoyed farming, raising beef cattle and was owner and operator of a small saw mill. On August 23, 1930 he married Nyna Larson in Superior. She preceded him in death May 26, 2001.

He served on the Ashland County board from 1972 to 1992, the Executive Board of Counties Forest Association, was active in the 4-H program and was director of the Ashland County Fair Board. He was a member of the Ashland County Unified Services Board and served as assessor and fire warden for the Town of Gingles. He helped in the development and funding for the Northern Great Lakes Regional Visitors Center and in the development of New Horizons North.

As an original member of the Tri-County Corridor Commission he had an active role in developing and promoting the trail systems in the area, was a member of the Ashland Snowmobile Club the Snowmobile Alliance and had been Director of the Governor's Cup Snowmobile Race.

In 1992 he was the recipient of the Outstanding Conservation Service Award and in 1993 the recipient of the Ashland County Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year Award. For over 25 years he was a foster parent for three developmentally disabled children. His hobbies included hunting, snowmobiling and visiting with family and friends.

Surviving are a son, Robert (Carol Lynn) Holmes III of Bonifay, Florida; five daughters Patricia "Pat” Ortman of Ashland, Margaret "Peggy" (Calvin) Benson of Palmer, Alaska, Glenda (Floyd "Butch") Marita of Townsend, Montana, Susan (Carl) Boettcher of Burlington, Kentucky, and Judy (Marvin) Lathe of Ashland, a foster-daughter, Kathy (Larry) Evenson of Mellen; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a brother, Ray Holmes of Wakefield, Michigan; three sisters, Helen Kimball of Marengo, Faye Sarazin of Babbit, Minnesota and Dorothy Sheahan of Milwaukee; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; many sisters and brothers; granddaughters, Lisa Boettcher and Anne Marita; and a foster-son, John Arseneau.

The funeral service will be held, Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Frost Home For Funerals in Ashland. Rev. Father Ward H. Simpson will officiate.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Frost Home For Funerals and will continue one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

A graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Mt. Mope Cemetery in Highbridge.

Betty Joyce Dax

Betty Dax, 57, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Port Wing, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Las Vegas.

She was born Betty Joyce Johnson, daughter of Everett and Linnea Johnson of Port Wing. Joyce, as she preferred to be called, graduated from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls with a degree in education. Joyce married Earl Dax in 1967, then moved to Albuquerque, N.M. where she taught elementary education for 15 years. Joyce moved to Nevada in 1985 teaching first in Laughlin for two years and then in Las Vegas for the past 15 years. She was a first grade teacher at the time of her death.

She is survived by one son, Earl, who lives in Philadelphia; her mother, Evelyn Linnea; one brother, Eric; three nieces and four nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Everett Johnson (Everett Fisheries), of Port Wing.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Port Wing Town Hall. Lunch will follow the memorial service.

Helen Forsythe

Helen S. Forsythe, 82, formerly of W5526 State Highway 22, Town of Washington, Shawano, passed away Sunday, October 1 3, 2002 at Heartland Health Care Center in Shawano where she had been a resident for the past three months. Helen was born February 6, 1920, in Iron River, Wis., daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Brilla) Viskoe.

She attended the Ashland Schools and following graduation attended UW-Whitewater where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Education. Following graduation she taught in Tripoli, Wis. for a year and then entered the United States Coast Guard and served during WW II. Upon returning from the service, she moved to Milwaukee where she was employed at the Allis Chalmers Company. Helen married Les Baumann and the couple moved to Evansville where they owned and operated the Western Auto Store. Mr. Baumann preceded her in death in 1964. Following her husband’s death she moved to Shawano where she taught school in Bowler and later for many years, in Shawano. On June 17, 1967 she was united In marriage to Gene Forsythe In Delta, Wis. The couple has lived in Shawano since their marriage. Helen retired from the Shawano Gresham School district in 1982. Helen enjoyed fishing, canning vegetables from her garden, hosting Christmas Eve at her home and spending New Years "Up North."

Survivors include her husband Gene, Town of Washington; two sisters: Jennie (Gil) Guidinger and Irene (Vernie) Ellestad both of MiIwaukee; two brothers: Phillip (Jolene) Viskoe of North Branch, Minn. and Ted Viskoe of Iron River, Wis.; numerous nieces, nephews, great and grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, two sisters- in-law and one brother- in-law.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 17, at 11 a.m. at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano with Father Len Evers, officiating. Interment is scheduled for Friday, October 18 at 1p.m. at St.Florian Catholic Cemetery in Ino, Wis. Friends may call at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
