Herbert Magnuson

Herbert A. Magnuson, 81, Ashland, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at his residence. He was born Aug. 28, 1921 in Ashland, the son of Herbert R. and Geraldine (Allen) Magnuson.

He graduated from Ashland High School in 1939. On July 9, 1942 he entered the US Army. Herbert became a 1st lieutenant and later was discharged from the Army in 1956. On June 16, 1956 he married Lillian Tukalek in Sarona. For 34 years, he worked as a brakeman and conductor for the Soo Line Railroad, retiring in 1983. Herbert was a member of the Masons, the Rod and Gun Club, and a 50-year Elk’s Club member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working at the kids’ Rod and Gun Club fishing party.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, Ashland; three children, Jon (Mary Kay) Magnuson, Ashland, Kim Hammond, Pewaukee, and Lori (Randall) Carlson, Ashland; five grandchildren, Kellie, Luke, Kristi, Daniel and Amanda; a step-mother, Helen Magnuson, Ashland; two half-sisters, Lynn (Mike) Frechette, Ashland, and Gail Rouskey, Ashland; a special niece, Carol (Kurt) Oesterreich, Sanborn; and other nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Masonic service will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, with a United Chequamegon Veterans Service following at 11:45 a.m. at the Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. today, at the Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland.

Inurnment will take place at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regional Hospice in Ashland.

Willard L. Drott

BUTTERNUT — Willard L. Drott, 72, of Butternut, died Friday, November 29, 2002 at the Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls. He was born on December 26, 1929 in Butternut , the son of Theodore and Lydia (Tesch) Drott.

His early life and schooling were in Butternut. He then entered the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. He was a Gunner Engineer and obtained the rank of Sergeant as a member of the 3rd Bombing Wing and received the Air Medal. He returned to Butternut and married Eleanor “Ellie” Meier on June 25, 1955. He was a logger and a truck driver. He also loved hunting, fishing, and camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor “Ellie” Drott of Butternut; seven children: Randy (Jane) Drott, Ron Drott, Rusty (Janice) Drott, all of Butternut, Roger Drott of Madison, Renee Drott and Reggie Drott, both also of Butternut and Rod Drott of Sussex; five grandchildren: Monica (Craig) Schloer, Matthew Drott, Michael Drott, Ted Drott, and Nicholas Drott; two great-grandchildren: Mackenzie and Naomi Schloer; four sisters: Vera (James) Mays of Phillips, LaVerne Bluedorn of Butternut, Mavis (William) Bolz of Idaho and Patricia Drott of Butternut; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Rory Drott.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Butternut with Rev. John A. Deitz officiating.

Burial will follow at the Butternut Union Cemetery in Butternut with military rites under the auspices of the Butternut American Legion Post.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 2 from 4-8 p.m. at the Novitzke Funeral Home in Park Falls and on Tuesday December 3 from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Butternut.

Beverly Swanson

Beverly J. Swanson, 61, of Altoona, passed away Thursday, December 10, 1998, in Robbinsdale, Minnesota.

Beverly was born to Albert and Beatrice Heyer in Aurora, Illinois on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1937. She had fond memories growing up in a large family in Hinkley, Illinois. She married Philip Swanson in 1956 and they have three children who were her greatest joy. She had unlimited energy which she devoted to a career in medical office management. She was a tireless volunteer at her church and at Wisconsin Public Radio. Music always played an important part in family life. Bev was a well known vocal soloist. She sang in the church choir and in the Valley Gospel Choir. Beverly had a strong faith that carried her through the ups and downs of life and was especially helpful to her through her struggle with leukemia.

Bev Swanson is survived by her children and their families, Stephen and Susan Swanson of Minneapolis, Nat and Cecelia; Diane and Chris Sands of Waupaca, Gretchen, Emma and Erik; Lisa Swanson and Bill Haskins of Lancaster, Carli and Alex; and Dan Hsu and Linkit Yeong and Gwen of San Diego, CA.

She will be missed by countless friends and extended family members.

The family appreciates memorials to the Hubert H. Humphrey Cancer Center, 3300 Oakdale, Plaza 100, Robbinsdale, MN 55422.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Pastor James Haerter officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 1998, at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home and an hour before services Sunday at the church.

Almira Sallberg

Almira Alice Martinson Sallberg, daughter of Jacob and Matilda Martinson, was born on March 31, 1916, in Menomonie, WI, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Dunn County Normal School in 1934, and taught at Dunville, WI, for two years. Almira was married to Nels S. Sallberg in 1936. They moved to Farmington, MN, where Nels was plant superintendent for Twin City Milk Producer's Association. In 1950, they purchased the Paul Bunyan Dairy in Bemidji, MN. In 1961, they moved to Moorhead, MN, where Almira graduated from Moorhead State University with a degree in elementary education. Following her graduation, Almira taught school in West Fargo, ND, for four years and for ten years at George Washington Elementary School in Moorhead. She retired from teaching in 1977. Almira was very active in the music and Christian education programs of her churches. In 1996, Almira moved from Moorhead to Plant City, Fla., where she died on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at the age of 82.

Almira was preceded in death by her husband, Nels, who died in 1982, and a daughter, Natalie Gay.

Almira is survived by a daughter, Corinne (David) Townsend, Plant City, FL; a son, Dr. Philip (Gwen) Sallberg of Roseau, MN; two brothers, Ret. Lt. Col. Harold Martinson of Hagarstown, MD, and Dr. Jacob Martinson, High Point, NC ; a sister, Mildred Barnes, Ankeny, IA; four grandchildren, David Townsend IL, and Amy, Michael and Rebecca Sallberg; and one great-grandson, Cameron.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Korsmo Funeral Chapel in Moorhead.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel, with burial in Ada Municipal Cemetery, Ada, MN.

Robert Strand

Robert Harley Strand, 72, of Plum City, died Wednesday, December 2, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

He was born March 20, 1926, in Eau Claire, son of Oscar and Cinderella King Strand. He attended various schools in the area and graduated from Arkansaw High School in 1943. He joined the United States Marines and served in China during World War II.

May 25, 1947, he married Virginia Bilsborough in Dwight, Illinois. They lived all of their married life in the Arkansaw area. For 18 years he worked at Whirlpool in St. Paul, then worked at Safeway Stores, Inc. in Durand until retiring in 1986. Virginia died April 10, 1996.

In November of 1986, he married Louise Lutzen Garton in St. James Catholic Church in Eau Claire. They lived all their married life in Eau Claire. Louise died March 10, 1991, and after her death he moved to an apartment in Durand. In June of 1996, he moved to The Seasons in Plum City and later moved to the Plum City Care Center.

Bob enjoyed being with his family. He will be remembered for his love of horses, auctioneering, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by sons, Robert (Janet) Strand of Rock Falls, and Charles (Cheryl) Strand of Republic, MO; daughters, Pamela (Michael) Baier of Eau Galle, Victoria (Gale) Weissinger of Durand, Sheila (Al) Carlson of Rochester, MN, Mary Lou (James) Ming of Eau Claire and Penny (Larry) Weissinger of Durand; 14 grandchildren; step-sons, Patrick Garton of Minneapolis, William (Kathy) Garton of Eau Claire, Timothy (Millie) Garton of Fond du Lac and Daniel (Julie) Garton of Oshkosh; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Hilliard of Joliet, IL.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Cinderella King Strand; wives, Virginia Bilsborough Strand and Louise Lutzen Garton Strand; infant daughter, Lynette Strand; and grandchildren, Brock Weissinger and Robby Strand.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Goodrich Funeral Home, with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery, both in Durand.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.

Jeaneen Amundson
MONDOVI -- Jeaneen A. Amundson, 64, of rural Mondovi, passed away Sunday, February 21, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

She was born on July 9, 1934, in Eau Claire to Harley and Maude (Rockwell) Powell. She graduated from Eau Claire Central High School. She was a nursing assistant at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire and later managed the optical department at Consumer Co-op in Eau Claire. She married Gordon Amundson on Jan. 7, 1975, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Norden. They farmed in the town of Naples, Buffalo Co., Wisc.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran of Norden and its ladies organizations. She sang with the Norden Singers. She was also a member of the Midnight Riders, the Norden Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club and the Sons of Norway Lodge 5-625.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon Amundson of Mondovi; one son, William (Linda) King of Mondovi; one daughter, Carol (George) King of Sparta; eight grandchildren, Bradley, Maria, Megan, Myra, Alyssah, Canaan, Keats and Colton King.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Angel and Brian King; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday Feb. 25, 1999, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Norden, rural Mondovi, with the Rev. David Bangert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Kjentvet & Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi. Friends may also call from 11 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church.

Myra Cripe

Myra Bennett Bergh Cripe, 91, of Barland St., Eau Claire, died Sunday morning, Feb. 21, 1999, at Dove Healthcare Nursing Home.

Myra was born Jan. 5, 1908, in North Carolina to William Baxter and Dora Ann (Edwards) Bennett. She moved with her parents to Tennessee, Iowa and to Seymour Township, Eau Claire, as a child.

She attended school in Seymour Township of Eau Claire.

She worked as a domestic housekeeper and motel owner. She enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Florida and Arizona. She enjoyed the birds and various craft projects, shopping and collecting owls. She was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church.

She married Vilas Bergh in 1937. After his death, she married Galen Cripe on Dec. 7, 1959. They built a home in the town of Hallie, Chippewa County. She lived in Hallie until his death, when she moved to Eau Claire in 1972.

She entered Dove Healthcare Nursing Home October, 1997.

Myra is survived by two step-children, Carol (Allard) Peck and Gary (Cleone) Cripe; several step-grandchildren; one sister, Aza Bergh of Eau Claire; one brother, Edward (Carol) Bennett of Eau Claire; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; both husbands; eight brothers, Lawrence, Milton, Clarence, Jason, Baxter, Dove, Obie and Robert Bennett; and one sister, Pearl Anderson.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Chapel, with interment in Northside Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the chapel.

Donald Hart

Donald M. Hart, 74, of Eau Claire, died Sunday, February 21, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Don was born June 7, 1924, in Lewis, Kansas.

In 1944, while serving as a pilot in the United States Air Force, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Ruth Baker, who became his faithful and loving wife on July 15, 1945. Don and Marilyn made their home in Eau Claire. Don worked for National Presto Company until forming his own company, now known as Don Hart & Son Construction. Don built homes for over forty years in the Eau Claire area. Don served in the First Battalion of the 128th Infantry in the Army National Guard for over twenty years.

Don was a very special person who was dearly loved by his family and friends. His enthusiasm for life, his heart felt dinner prayers and unique gifts of spreading love and laughter to those around him will be remembered with smiles and tears.

Beloved husband of 54 years to Marilyn. Loving and caring father of Jill and Michael. Proud grandpa of Jodie, Jeffrey, Jason, Sarah, Joshua and Stephanie. Great-grandpa of Heather, Jeremy, twins, David and Dustin, and Samantha. Loyal friend to his Black Lab "Duke."

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Baptist Church on Clairemont Avenue.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Chapel.
