Mr. Willard J. 'Bill' Gerrits
Mr. Willard J. “Bill” Gerrits, 73, 1152 Loch Dr., passed away peacefully at home, with his wife at his side, Saturday, April 22, 2000. He was born March 19, 1927, in Amery, Wis., to the late George and Regina (Van Asten) Gerrits. Mr. Gerrits served his county in the U.S. Army. He married Esther Lemmens on February 5, 1972. Bill was employed as a truck driver by Fairmont Foods for 36 years, before retiring in 1984. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Esther; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gerri and James Schumann, Tripoli; Rose and Dana Kiesling, Sandwich, Ill.; Debbie Hutchenson, Denver, Colo.; a son, Wayne Malezewski, Appleton, Wis.; five stepchildren and their spouses, Joyce and Steve Libal, Little Meadows, Penn.; Chris and Merlin Vande Walle, Crivitz; Donna VanEycke, Jack and Lou Ann VanEycke, Lori and Bob Becker, all of Green Bay; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Norma Gerrits, Oneida; Roy and Sylvia Gerrits, Green Bay; four sisters, Jean Verheyden and her friend, Lloyd Kropp, Seymour; Margaret Kropp, Martha Nicholson and Ann Wagner, all of Green Bay; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John “Flash” Lemmens, Green Bay; Arnold and Verna Lemmens, Black Creek; Bernard “Chief” and Kathy Lemmens, Josephine Coenen, Mickey and Andy Hoes, all of Green Bay; Anna Abel, Menasha; Martha Melchert, Black Creek; Sally and Ernie Ossman, Seymour; and Harriet and Ken Rolkoski, Green Bay. He is also survived by many other relatives and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Larry Gerrits; one brother, Sylvester Gerrits; four brothers-in-law, and a very special friend and sister-in-law, Audie Lemmens. Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 3 to 8 p.m. today. The Parish Wake Service will be at 4 p.m. today. Friends may also call at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Richard Getchel officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Village of Howard.
Esther would like to extend a heartful thank you to Unity Hospice, Dawn, Heidi, Kaye, Dr. Bayer and Dr. Anderas. A special thank you to her Godchild and Bill’s favorite niece, Sherry Lemmens. Carl R. Doemel
Carl R. Doemel, 88, died Friday, April 21, 2000 at a local nursing home. He was born November 1, 1911 to John and Jessie (Mc Cutcheon) Doemel in Stockbridge, Wisconsin. On July 20, 1935, he married Lydia Fifield in Green Bay; she preceded him in death September 7, 1995. He had been employed by Norcor Manufacturing for 24 years and then Diana Manufacturing for 15 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. He is survived by three sons and three daughters-in-law, Rodger and Janice Doemel, Shawano Wisconsin, Tim and Mary Doemel, Florence, Wisconsin and Alwin and Betty Doemel, Green Bay; three daughters and four sons-in-law, Jessie and George Buys, Cape Coral, Florida, Joan and Jim Wolfe, Crivitz, Wisconsin, Cheryl and Bob Martin, Maribel, Wisconsin and Mike Barribeau, Green Bay; one brother, Curtis Doemel, Northome, Minnesota; and four sisters-in-law, Cora Mork, Suring, Lura Goddard, Green Bay, Louise Fifield, Gillett and Dolores Doemel, White Lake. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Cora Barribeau and four grandchildren, Tim Doemel, Jr., Dennis Wolfe, Mark Doemel, and Michelle Doemel. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday (TODAY) at Pilgrim Lutheran Church where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gregory Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in Nicolet Memorial Garden. Lyndahl Funeral Home is assisting the family.
A memorial fund has been established. The family would like to say thank you to the staff at Western Village for taking care of Dad.

Mrs. Ken 'Fern' Derouin
Mrs. Ken (Fern) Derouin, 77, of 2790 So. Ridge Rd., died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at a local nursing home. Fern was born October 25, 1922, in Bellevue, to the late Matthew and Nettie (Parins) Denisson. She married Kenneth Derouin on June 11, 1942, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Green Bay. Fern and Kenneth farmed all of their lives prior to retirement in 1975. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, children, Ann Derouin, Green Bay, Buck Derouin, De Pere, Bill and Pat Derouin, De Pere, Nancy and Jim Thomas, Elkhart Lake, Ed and Maria Derouin, Green Bay, Jim and Karen Derouin, De Pere, Sandy and Michael Del Giacco, De Pere; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her siblings and their spouses, Roman and Agnes Denisson, Orland and Elaine Denisson, Janice and Robert Cavil, Mrs. Vernon (Kathleen) Van Beek, Mary and Norbert Gillis, Lois and Richard Mickulsky, Peter and Theresa Denisson, and one sister-in-law, Cathy. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Matt, Jr. Friends may call at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, Sunday, from 4-8 p.m. Prayer Service 8 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday from 10-11 a.m. at Nativity Parish. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrate at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Hablewitz officiating. Entombment in the Allouez Mausoleum.

Jack O. Gilbo
Jack O. Gilbo, 76, of 2068 Lost Dauphin Road, De Pere, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 22, 2000, at home. The son of the late Harry and Ida (Daus) Gilbo was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Oshkosh. Jack was a member of the United States Marine Corps and saw action in the South Pacific during World War II. On July 6, 1945, he married the former Betty Gehrke in Oshkosh. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1999. Mr. Gilbo worked at Hickory Grove Sanitarium for many years and retired from the Ramada Inn. Survivors include his mother-in-law, Grace Phillip of Oshkosh. Friends may call at St. John Lutheran Church, Scheuring Road at Lost Dauphin Drive, De Pere, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. LeRoy Remmers officiating. Ryan Funeral Home of De Pere is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Julian Renard
Robert Julian Renard, age 46, of 1743 of Bond St., died Thursday, April 20, 2000 as a result of an automobile accident. He was born November 13, 1953 in Algoma to Howard and Angela (Bouche) Renard. In 1971, he graduated form Southern Door High School where he had played basketball for the Southern Door Eagles. In 1975, he graduated from the UW-Oshkosh. In 1985, the same year his son Brooks, was born, he founded Renard Homes and later Renard’s Homes of Wautoma, Green Bay Mortgage, Pleasentview Manufactured Homes Park and R. J. R. Investments. Bob was a member of the Brown County Home Builders Association, the Wisconsin Manufactured Housing Assoc., Wisconsin W.A.M.B. and was also a member of St. Agnes Parish. And, as his friends all knew, “No one worked as hard as Renard.” Survivors includes his fiance, Dale Knafelc; two children, Brooks and Madison. He is also survived by Samuel and Joseph Knafelc; his parents, Howard and Angela Renard, Algoma; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Bonnie Renard, Joe and Judi Renard, all of Sturgeon Bay, Brian and Tina Renard, Algoma, Paul and Cindy Renard, Green Bay, John Renard, Chicago; one sister and brother-in-law Mary and Neal Bessett, Green Bay; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Fred (Louise) Renard, Brussels; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a godchild, Carrie Renard; his paternal grandfather, Fred Renard; his maternal grandparents, John and Adele Bouche. Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4-9 p.m. on Sunday. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Visitation will continue on Monday from 9-11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth St. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Richard Getchel officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.

Jerome 'Jerry' Smits
Jerome “Jerry” Smits, 59, of 4435 Oak Ridge Court, De Pere, died Sunday March 26, 2000 at a Milwaukee hospital following a courageous battle with heart disease. The son of Florence (Hockers) Smits and the late Edward “Biff” Smits was born April 28, 1940 in Green Bay. Jerry was a graduate of Abbot Pennings High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. On May 12, 1962, he married the former Barbara Danen at St. Mary Catholic Church in De Pere. He worked for the Nicolet Paper Company for 25 years. Mr. Smits was a volunteer fireman for De Pere for many years. He loved his children and, most especially, spending time with his grandchildren, whom he cherished. Mr. Smits was a member of the Knights of Columbus, De Pere Council #3955 and loved his Wednesday night bowling group. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, planting trees, working in his garden, and spending time at his cottage up north. Survivors include his wife, Barb; their children, Mark and Lisa Smits, Sandy and Mark Miller, Scott and Mary Ann Smits, Lisa and Craig Andersen, all of De Pere; five grandchildren, Kyle Smits, Korey Jerome Smits, Nicholas Miller, Brandon and Trevor Andersen; his mother, Florence (Hockers) Smits, De Pere; three brothers, Stanley and Mary Smits, of Georgia, Steve and Kathy Smits, Oregon, Ron and Chris Smits, Calif. Jerry is also survived by Barb’s family, Dick and Lynn Danen, Debra and Randy Hansen, and Dale and Sara Danen. He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, and his parents-in-law, Richard and Cy Danen. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Community on Pope John XXIII Circle off Sportsman Drive, Town of Ledgeview. The Knights of Columbus will hold a Memorial Service at 6 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Church with the Rev. Gery Meehan, O. Praem, officiating. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Ryan Funeral Home, De Pere, is in charge of arrangements.

Clare Beemster Sobiek
Clare Beemster Sobiek, passed away April 20 at 73 after a short bout with cancer. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine Sobiek. She is survived by a son, Steven Earl Sobiek (Emily) of Deerfield, Wisconsin; two sisters, Josephine DeGroot, Green Bay, and Pauline Peer, Whitehall, Michigan; a brother, Joseph Peer, Farmington, New Mexico, and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Sobiek was a member of the Seat of Wisdom Library, Legion of Mary, The Women’s Literary Club, the Wauwatosa Republican Club and The Creative Friends. She was formerly employed by WBAY-TV, Green Bay, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, and as an associate of the Earl J. Sobiek Insurance Agency. Visitation on Monday, April 24 beginning at 9 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 8500 W. Coldspring, Greenfield, followed by a 10 a.m. con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial. Internment Calvary Cemetery, 5503 W. Bluemound Rd. Milwaukee.

James A. Unger
James A. Unger, 68, Green Bay, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday afternoon, April 4, 2000. He was born June 20, 1931 to the late Walter and Eve (Rauch) Unger in St. Paul, Minnesota. As a child he moved to Iron Mountain, Mich. and graduated from high school in 1948. He was involved with the family-owned Pine Mountain Dairy. He attended St. Norbert’s College, Badger Green Bay Business College and Iowa State Dairy College, graduating in March of 1952. Jim managed the family owned dairy business in Iron Mountain until 1969. From 1969 to 1981, he was involved in the dairy business with Lindner’s Ice Cream of Indiana polis , Indiana and the former Fairmont Foods in Green Bay. He left the dairy business in 1981 and purchased J & L Enterprise, an automotive accessories business, retiring in September of 1999. Jim married Nancy Kling from Foster City, Mich. on October 15, 1955 in Iron Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Linda Unger of Menominee, Mich., Stephen and Mary Unger of Pulaski, Wis.; four grandchildren, Lindsey, Lance, Paul, and Laura; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Warren and Lola Unger of Kingsford, Mich., and Richard and Julie Unger of Appleton, Wis.; one brother, Clyde Unger of Spread Eagle, Wis.; his mother-in-law, Lucille Kling and her special friend, Joe Reimer of Foster City, Mich. and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice in 1960. Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Jaycee’s Elks, U.C.T. and Lions, all in Iron Mountain. He loved to play smear and ninety-nine with relatives and friends. He was a loving and gentle husband, father and grandpa. Jim loved to bake and looked forward to setting up his annual Christmas Village. He loved to tell stories and talk about history and was very involved in supporting and participating in his grandchildren’s school and sporting events. In recent years, Jim was involved in his family’s genealogy and family history. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at Lyndahl Funeral Home, Lombardi Avenue and Ridge Road, Green Bay. Funeral Services will be held at 6 p.m. immediately following the visitation with Rev. Dennis Schatt officiating.
Jim’s family wishes to express special gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Kubsch and his nurses, Eileen and Sharon, for their very kind care of Jim over the years. A memorial fund has been established.
