Blanche Brice

Blanche I. Brice, 93, of St. John's Apartments, Eau Claire went to be with her Lord on Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Blanche was born May 4, 1906, the daughter of Carl and Amelia (Preston) Burns in Mondovi, WI. She married Hugh W. Brice on October 12, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Eau Claire for over 50 years. Blanche was a homemaker and she worked at SM Supply after her husband's death and until her retirement.

Blanche was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh; two sisters, Gladys Baker and Charlotte Berg and an infant brother, Orrin. Blanche is survived by her daughter, Beverly Peterson of Eau Claire, five grandchildren, Judith (Harold) Ritter of Chippewa Falls, James (Nancy) Peterson of Chippewa Falls, Allan Peterson of Eau Claire, Daniel (Dianna) Peterson of Chippewa Falls, Debra (Troy) Koteras of Chippewa Falls, eight great-grandchildren, Heather and Robert Ritter, Elizabeth Peterson, Christopher Peterson, Brice and Shawn Peterson, Benjamin and Keah Koteras; and many other relatives and friends.

Blanche was a loving and wonderful Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and friend to many. She loved her family, taking care of and arranging flowers, crocheting, baking cookies, visiting with her friends at St. Johns, picnics, boating and being active right up to shortly before her death. We will all miss you grandma-ma!

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at First Baptist Church in Eau Claire with Pastor Richard Goins and Pastor Marilyn Marston officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home in Eau Claire and an hour before the services on Tuesday at the church. Memorials will be given to First Baptist Church in Eau Claire.

Clyde Best Sr.

Clyde Best Sr., 86, of Altoona, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Clyde, son of Walter and Margaret Best, was born July 26, 1914, in Eau Claire County. He married his wife, Alnora, October 26, 1937, in the town of Washington.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Alnora of Altoona, Wisconsin; two sons, Clyde (Debbie) Best of Mondovi, Wisconsin and Walter Best, Saucier, Mississippi; one daughter, Eunice (Arthur) Peterson of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; a brother, Glenn (Ida Mae) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; two sisters, Lilah (Gordon) Mueller of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Betty(Sam) Villarreal of Waukesha, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son; and four brothers.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2001, at Smith Funeral Chapel, with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2001, and one hour prior to services on Saturday. The Reverend Richard Goins will officiate. Interment will be in Rest Haven Gardens in Eau Claire.

Mary Jane Baker

Mary Jane Baker, 80, of 1611 Glades Dr., Altoona, died Nov. 28, 2000, at Dove Healthcare Nursing & Rehabilitation after a long illness.

Mary was born in Eau Claire on June 19, 1920, to Warren James and Elizabeth Ann (Patterson) Melville. She and LaMoine H. Baker were married Sept. 2, 1937. Mary worked several years at Samuelson's Department Store as a clerk. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Eau Claire, for over 50 years and served on many committees and belonged to various groups in the church.

Some of her hobbies included ceramics, art, reading, sewing and playing cards with family and friends. She was an avid letter writer and a loving mother who touched many lives. Her presence will be missed.

Mary is survived by her husband, LaMoine H. Baker; two sons and five daughters, Mary Ellen (Kolka) Moser (Glenn) of Wilmington, Del., Robert T. Baker (Sally) of Hallie, Joanne R. Ures of Eau Claire, John H. Baker (Wendy) of Eleva, Sue E. Moseley (Carl) of Roswell, Ga., Jane P. Gore (Charles) of Snellville, Ga., and Cynthia J. LaVelle (Daniel) of Eau Claire. Also surviving her are seventeen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Tobias George Melville.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 416 Niagara St., Eau Claire, with Rev. David Christner and Rev. Richard Goins officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Smith Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

Lowell K. Riley

Lowell K. Riley of Eau Claire died Tuesday, November 29, 2000, at Dove Healthcare Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Lowell was born on October 17, 1918, to Lester and Effie (Roll) Riley. He grew up on the family farm in Glen Flora, Wisconsin, and graduated from Tony High School. As a teenager, he became interested in ham radio and was very proud of his call letters, W9MEO. His interest in radio and knowledge of electronics led him to service in Chicago as a civilian in the Army Signal Corps, followed by several years as radio operator at Northwest Airlines. After 24 years as an electrician at Uniroyal, he retired in October, 1981. He married Adah Fear on August 27, 1949. He became the proud father of two daughters and one son.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Alvin.

He is survived by his wife, Adah; children, Barbara (Tom) Johnson of Menomonie, Wis., Lois Riley of Eau Claire, Wis., and Donald (JoAnn) Riley of Aurora, Missouri; one brother, Dale (Jo) Riley; five grandchildren, Brian and Matt Johnson, and Michael, Kevin and Janice Riley. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lowell was a faithful, active member of First Baptist Church of Eau Claire for 51 years.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2000, at First Baptist Church, with Pastor David Christner officiating. Burial will be private in Oak Grove Cemetery prior to the service on Monday.

Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2000, at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Eau Claire Amateur Radio Club, the Hospice Program of Northwest Wisconsin Homecare or any charity of the donor's choice.

Joann D. Mathews

Joann D. Mathews, 68, of Eau Claire died Monday, November 13, 2000, at her home.

Joann was born August 9, 1932, in Greenville, Miss., to Lee Luther and Caroline Elizabeth (Billingsley) Duke. She married Charles B. Mathews, Jr. on May 14, 1954, in Norfolk, Va. Charles B., Jr. died in 1994.

For the past 20 plus years, she worked as a bookkeeper for Parker Filter Division of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly Eau Claire Filter and in customer service at Midelfort Clinic. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in many committees and activities. She volunteered at Sacred Heart Hospital Gift Shop, Triniteam, Community Table and other numerous volunteer work from 1995, until the present.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Barone of Eau Claire; three sons, Robert (Ramona) of Eau Claire, John (Mindy) of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Timothy (Tami) of Colfax; eight grandchildren, Judith (Tim) Maldonado, James Mathews, Jodi, Samantha and John Charles Mathews, Justin and Carmela Barone and Cody Kappus; two sisters, Roberta Stein of Memphis, Tenn., and Ruth Marie (Frank) Mehrhoff of Luling, La; sister-in-law, Edith (Robert) Sisco of Eau Claire; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles B., Jr.; one sister, Caroline Elizabeth Wagner; and three brothers, Lee L. Jr., John Harold and Lawrence.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 18, 2000, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with Rev. David Christner officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Gardens Cemetery, town of Washington.

Friends may call Friday, November 17, 2000, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Golden Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave.

Golden Funeral Home is serving the family.

Suzanne J. Ganther

Suzanne J. Ganther, 64, of Eau Claire died March 11, 2000 at Luther Hospital.

She was born Oct. 25, 1935, in New York, N.Y., to Marion (Kiraly) and Louis Banyai.

She attended school in Long Island, N.Y., Catawba, Wis., Kennan, Wis., and Phillips, Wis. She graduated from high school in 1954. She then attended the Eau Claire State Teacher’s College and a three-year degree program at Luther Hospital. She was a registered nurse at Luther Hospital and Mt. Washington Nursing Home. She married Gilbert Ganther, Jr. on Dec. 28, 1957.

She was an active member in the Chippewa Valley Ostomy Association, the United Ostomy Association (where she served as the Wisconsin State Representative, North Central Regional Coordinator, and the UOA Board of Directors member). She received the Bob Frye Award in 1989. A necessary complication to her life, kidney dialysis, was administered with loving attention by the people at the Hemodialysis Unit at Luther Hospital. Suzanne was a member of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed needlework, knitting, reading, traveling and plastic canvas.

She is survived by her sons David (Dotty) of Athens, Mich., and Timothy (Fay) of Eau Claire; two granddaughters Danielle and Beth; two grandsons, Benjamin and Samuel; two brothers, Louis (Laurie) of Glenwood City, Wis., and Peter (Jill) of Old Fort, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Jean (James) of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Barbara Brockman, of Dubuque, Iowa, and Bette (Lindsey) Anderson, Grand Island, Neb.; and 13 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, March 13 at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Carlson officiating. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. to the time of services Monday at the funeral home.

The family prefers memorials to the Chippewa Valley Ostomy Association in Suzanne’s memory.

Alvin Reineke

Alvin Henry Reineke, 85, of Eau Claire, passed away Friday, October 26, 2001 at Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation, Eau Claire.

He was born June 5, 1916, in Livingston, Wis., to Emil and Lisette (Thoenes) Reineke. He attended Butler School and Hobart Welding School in Madison, Wis.

He married Evelyn Morrison in Thorp, Wis., in April of 1936.

He was a pipefitter, working for Grovold, Healy and Bartingale Mechanical Contractors throughout the state of Wisconsin. He retired in 1979. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters for 56 years. He served on various committees for Local 385.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eau Claire for 45 years, and served as trustee and Sunday School teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers; 5 sisters; several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn; daughter, Eileen (Lauren) Books of Eau Claire; son, Emil (Lynette) of the Town of Butler, rural Thorp; grandchildren, Steven (Diane), Tom (Jill) and Lisa Books, Erich and Ethan Reineke and Sarah (Travis) Rowen; great-grandchildren, Kendra, Logan and Hunter Books; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alvin was a hard-working man who dearly loved his family and the out-of-doors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In retirement he and Evelyn traveled in their RV throughout the United States including Alaska. Alvin grew to adulthood in a family of 11 siblings and always looked forward to family gatherings. He will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at First Baptist Church, Eau Claire, with Reverend Richard Goins officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Town of Butler Cemetery, Clark County.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Boy Scouts of America. Prock Funeral home is handling arrangements.

Richard Davey Schlieve
Richard Davey Schlieve, 51, 2363 Sherman Creek Road, Eau Claire, died May 28, 2001, Memorial Day.

He was born on March 18, 1950, in Eau Claire, to Jean and Jean (Davey) Schlieve. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1974, (Political Science), and in 1985, (Business Management).

Richard loved politics; he began as a Young Republican and later diligently served the Democratic Party for many years. He worked on numerous elections, including Jimmy Carter's Presidential campaign and Tony Earl's race for Governor. In addition, Richard was an Aide to Illinois Governor, Dan Walker. He loved a good debate and was tremendously patriotic.

He was an Eagle Scout and continued to support the Boy Scouts of America through both of his sons. He served in many capacities including Pack Master for his youngest son's Scouting adventures while at Sherman School.

Ever a supporter of equal rights, Richard was active in the Eau Claire chapter of Camp Fire Girls for over 20 years. He served as Troop Leader and on the Board of Directors. Richard was instrumental in arranging the transfer of the Camp Fire building to the Bolton Refuge House, when Camp Fire left the Eau Claire area.

Richard's dedication to youth continued through his teaching Sunday School for the past 14 years. He found great joy in guiding young people to know our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

An avid outdoorsman, Richard loved to hunt and fish. He taught all of his children the love of fishing, taught his sons to hunt and taught his daughter to shoot. He always had a golden retriever at his side.

Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Clara Schlieve and Allan and Lucile Davey.

Survivors include his parents, Jean and Jean; his wife, Cheryl; his children, Andy, Lara and Mark; Andy's mother, Becky Brown; Richard's siblings, Amy Schlieve (Chris Stokes), Don (Dee) Schlieve and Nancy Schlieve; and five nieces and nephews, Nathan, Christie, Alyssa, Emily and Gabriel.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 310 Broadway, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 7 p.m. Friends may call prior to the memorial and coffee will be served after the service. Remains will be privately disbursed at Moose Lake, Wisconsin, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial is planned for the Vespers area of Camp Tamarack in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Richard, his siblings, his children and his nieces and nephews have all attended Camp Tamarack throughout their school years.
