Eugene ‘Crab’ Crabtree

CORNUCOPIA — Eugene R. “Crab” Crabtree, age 67, of Cornucopia, formerly of Walworth, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his residence. He was born Sept. 1, 1935, in Elkhorn, the son of Russell and Leanore (Gates) Crabtree.

He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran. For 42 years he worked on road construction retiring in 1995. On Dec. 27, 1987, he married Barb Vollman in Herbster. They have been residents of Cornucopia since 1995.

Surviving are his wife, Barb Crabtree of Cornucopia; a sister, Eleanor (Bob) Rice of Ridgewood, N.J.; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation or funeral service per his request. Cremation will take place with the Ashland Crematory Service. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn is assisting the family with arrangements.

Verna Ftacek

OTTAWA, Ill. — Verna E. Ftacek, 86, Ottawa, Ill., died on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at her home. She was born Jan. 29, 1916, at Ino, the daughter of John and Anna (Belejcak) Visocky.

She was married to Joseph A. Ftacek on June 5, 1937, at St. Mary’s Church, Naplate. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1978. She worked at LOF Glass Co. during World War II and had also been employed as a domestic. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and the Altar and Rosary Societies, the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Francis Mothers Club. She was also a Camp Fire leader and a chaperone for the Marquette Drum and Bugle Corp.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy (Dale) Russell, Marseilles, Ill.; and Patricia (Kevin) Brown, Streator, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Angela (Mark) Miller, Barbara (John) Armstrong, Michael Lockard, Michael (Amy Graffis), Rebecca, Stephen and James Brown; and one great-grandson, Andrew John Armstrong.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine and Helene ; five brothers, Paul, Joseph, Albert, Frank and James “Jack” Visocky; and a son, Joseph Ftacek in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Frances of Assisi Church, Ottawa, Ill., with Rev. Gerald Meyer officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday with Catholic Daughters of America with a 7 p.m. rosary.

Pallbearers include grandsons Michael Lockard, Michael, Stephen and James Brown, Mark Miller and John Armstrong.

Rose Augustyniak

MILWAUKEE — Rose A. (Herumin) Augustyniak, 80, died on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002.

She was the beloved wife of Stanley, dear mother of John (Beth); loving grandmother of Steven; sister of Cecilia Herumin, Sr. Frances Herumin, PHJC; Stella Foris and the late Sr. Corduline Herumin, PHJC; Alice Larson, Joseph Herman, Theresa Herumin, Bernadine Semenak and Bernard Herumin.

She is also survived by other relatives and friends.

Funeral services and visitation were on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at the Max A. Sass & Sons, Funeral Home, Milwaukee.

At Rose’s request, cremation will take place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Basilica of St. Josaphate’s Church for masses in her honor.

Vern L. Frechette

WASHBURN — Vern L. Frechette, 93, of 835 West Omaha Street in Washburn, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. He was born February 12, 1909 in Washburn, the son of Joseph and Emma (Demuse) Frechette.

On October 6, 1934 he married Eva C. Score in Bessemer, Mich. She preceded him in death on December 23, 1989. He worked as a pipefitter in northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan for a number of years and as a carpenter for several building contractors in the area. He also worked as a carpenter for DuPont Company in Barksdale for several years before retiring when the plant closed. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He was also an avid Packer fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen Lundmark of Washburn; a son Mike (Lynn) Frechette of Ashland; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter Margie in 1980, his parents, a son-in-law Gary Lundmark; brothers George and Henry; and a sister Jenny.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 13 at the Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn. Father Gary Bernhardt, OFM will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Bratley Funeral Home. Spring interment will take place win the Woodland Cemetery in Washburn.

Albert F. Podolan

MASON — Albert “Pudy” F. Podolan, 84, of 61315 Pike River Road, Mason, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2002 at his residence.

Pudy was born March 21, 1918 in Delta, the son of Stephen W. and Elizabeth S. (Visocky) Podolan. At the age of 18 he went into the CC Camps at Loretta, Wis., and worked there for two years. In 1942 he went west and worked at Longview, Washington in a paper mill until he was called to serve his country in W.W.II. He was a sergeant in the armored division in Germany. After the war he sailed the Great Lakes, worked for the forestry service, and also at Du Pont. In 1955 he went to work for the Bayfield County Highway Department until his retirement in 1978. Pudy was an avid fisherman and loved to fish in the White River. His hobbies included tying flies, playing cards and visiting the local casinos.

Pudy is survived by six sisters: Irene (Glass) Neuman, Theresa (Fritz) Vlasaty and Frances Bednarik, all of Delta, Helen Johanik of Moquah, Eleanore (John) Bizub of Mildore and Catherine Wuennecke of Ashland; a brother Frank (Janet) of Delta and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Elizabeth Horstman, Ann Fetsco and Agnes (Gazdik) Osmak.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 14 at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland with Father Gary Bernhardt, O.F.M. officiating. Military honors under the auspices of the United Chequamegon Area Veterans will immediately follow the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

A private family interment will take place in the Saint Florian Cemetery, in Ino at a later date.

Memorials for a fund to be established are preferred in lieu of flowers.

The Mountain Funeral Home, Ashland and Mellen, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard Norum

PHILLIPS — Richard Henry Norum, 68, Phillips, died at his home on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. He was born in Phillips on November 13, 1934, the son of Henry and Eunice (Newton) Norum. He was a graduate of the Phillips High School and he also served in the Wisconsin National Guard. He was married to Carolyn Komatz in Phillips on July 2, 1955. He was employed by the Flambeau Milling Company, served as circulation supervisor for the Milwaukee Sentinel, was the Phillips Standard Oil Agent, was employed by Phillips Plastics, owned and operated Dick Norum Realty and was the District Manager for Secure Mini Storage of West Allis. He had been a member of St. John Lutheran Church, a member of the Phillips Lions, the F. and A. M. Lodge 225 of Phillips, and served on the Phillips Industrial Development Corporation.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; by five children: Cindy (Randy) Furger, Marathon, Rich (Terri), Redwood City, Calif., Judy (Jerry) Pufall, Fayetteville, Ark., Ken (Tracy) Little Elm, Texas, and Eric, Elm Grove, Wisconsin; by ten grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and a brother, William Norum of Milwaukee.

At Dick’s request, there will be no services.

The Heindl funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Gregory Larson

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Gregory P. Larson, 53, East Bethel, Minn., died on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at his home with his wife by his side.

He attended Washburn schools, served in the U.S. Navy and will always be remembered for his love of fishing on Mille Lacs Lake and hunting for grouse.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patty, and her son Chris, both of Coon Rapids; a son, Ryan (Pam), Eden Prairie, Minn.; a daughter, Laura, Fridley, Minn.; his mother, Joyce, Washburn; brothers, Larry (Marge), West Allis; Dan (Sally), St. Paul, Minn.; and Mark (Kathy), Irvine, Calif.; father-in-law, Marlin McQuiston, Cumberland; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard, and a sister, Karen.

A memorial gathering for family and friends will take place from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2002, at the Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel, 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd., Coon Rapids, Minn.

A Mass of Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at the Church of the Epiphany, 111th and Hanson Blvd. NW, with visitation one half hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Cumberland.

Mae Hanson

PARK FALLS — Mae E. Hanson, 87, Park Falls, died Monday December 9, 2002, at Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls. She was born on October 4, 1915, in Bloomington, Ill., the daughter of William and Jane (Fleming) Robertson. Her early life and schooling were in Illinois until she moved to Park Falls where she graduated from high school. Mae was a bus driver for the Park Falls School System and was very active in the community.

She is survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyle "Bud" Hanson, her son Bill Hanson, and her daughter Roberta Denton.

Mae will be honored at the Sunday Services of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Falls on Sunday December 22, 2002, at I 0:30 a.m.

Memorials in Mae's memory can be made to the Congregational Church.

Caroline A. Hynek

PHILLIPS — Caroline A. Hynek, 96, Phillips, passed away quietly late Saturday night, December 14, 2002, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Phillips. She was born on September 19, 1906, in Hayward, the daughter of Andrew and Ella (Ingbretsen) Madson.

She attended and graduated from Hayward High School, Class of 1925. Caroline was united in marriage to Jerry J. Hynek, in Park Falls on November 21, 1926, and together they celebrated 65 years of marriage in 1991.

She is survived by two sons: Robert (Ollie) of Bonduel, Wis., and Edward (Betty) of Lytle Creek, Calif., by 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived locally by one sister-in-law, Violet Hlavacek.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry on November 22, 1992 and by two brothers and seven sisters and by her parents.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Phillips with Pastor Thomas Reiff officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Lakeside Cemetery in Phillips in the spring. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18 at St. John’s Church until the hour of the service.

The Heindl Funeral Home of Phillips is in charge of the arrangements.

James Edward Temby II

PARK FALLS — James Edward Temby II, 47, of Park Falls, died Sunday, December 15, 2002 at his home. He was born on September 14, 1955 in Superior, the son of James and Marie (Schoch) Temby. His early life and schooling were in Glidden and Superior. On May 11, 1974, he married Nancy Nealey in Butternut. The couple moved to Milwaukee where James worked for various companies including Visa Lighting. In 1994 he moved to Butternut and worked for Marquip Inc. in Phillips. He moved to Park Falls in November of this year. He loved to cook, cross-country ski, and enjoyed making people laugh.

He is survived by his son James (Tyne) Temby III and a daughter Mariah (Robert “Bert” Brandt) Temby, both of Butternut; a grandson Keenan James Temby; his special friend Natalie Schroeder of Australia; his mother Marie Temby of Park Falls, his father James Temby of Superior; four brothers: Dennis (Mona) Temby of Midland, Texas, Richard (Shirley) Temby of Edgerton, David Temby of Portage, Kevin (Mary) Temby of Markesan; two sisters: Ann Temby of Spencer and Carol (Robert) Andrews of Fifield; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 20, at 10 a.m. from the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel in Park Falls. Rev. Stanley Bahn will officiate.

Burial will follow at Butternut Union Cemetery in Butternut.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
