Dr. James Murphy
PARK FALLS — Dr. James Murphy passed away on Tuesday, December 24 at the Park Manor Nursing Home in Park Falls. Dr. Murphy was born in Stanley, Wisconsin on May 12, 1910, to Maude Turney Murphy and James Leo Murphy and received his early schooling in that community and in St. Paul, Minnesota.
He received his undergraduate degree from Bard College in Poughkeepsie, New York, which was at that time affiliated with Columbia University, and his medical degree from Marquette University Medical School in Milwaukee, now The Medical College of Wisconsin.
He moved to Park Falls when his mother purchased the original Park Falls Hospital in the mid-thirties. He married Jean Paquin of Park Falls on May 31, 1936.
He served as a flight surgeon in the United States Army Air Corps during W.W.II, and returned to Park Falls after the war to take up his medical practice. He served the Park Falls community in that capacity for many years until his retirement in 1981. After that, he continued to see patients and staff at the Park Manor for some time.
Dr. Murphy is survived by his sister-in-law, Dixie Smart of Park Falls, nephews John and Jerry Smart also of Park Falls, and Jim Smart of Minneapolis, and cousins Muriel Martin and Kathryn Seidl of Park Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife Jean Paquin Murphy.
Visitation will be held at the Novitzke Funeral Home in Park Falls on Friday, December 27 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral with Masonic rites will be Saturday morning, December 28 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. William Radant officiating.
Burial will follow in Nola Cemetery. Military rites will be held under the auspices of the Park Falls American Legion and VFW Posts.
Edith Leoso
ODANAH — Edith M. Leoso, 73, 55343 Kakagon Road, Odanah, began her journey to the spirit world Thursday, January 30, 2003. She was born March 29, 1929, in Odanah, the daughter of Martha and Francis Wiggins.
She attended school in Odanah and was an alumni of Northland College, graduating in May of 1978. In May of 1960, she married Siaki Soli Leoso, in Chicago, Ill. Edith worked for the U.S. Forest Service, Chicago American Indian Center, and several programs for the Bad River Tribe, including, the Tribal School, Head Start, TRAILS, Health Department, and the library for the Green Thumb Program. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edith was also an avid sports fan.
She is survived by her sister, Mary (Eugene) Bigboy, Odanah; 10 children, Lawrence A. Stone, Jeannine A. Stone, Pamela R. (Ken Couture) Stone, Renee (Maurice) Bega, Esie A. (Eldred Corbine) Leoso, Siaki W. (Robin Powless) Leoso, Edith S. (Calvin Campbell) Leoso, Edward (Kim) Leoso, Francis S. (Eva Wilson) Leoso, and Robert F. (Sirella Ford) Leoso; 34 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Siaki Soli; granddaughter, Sarah Angelica Leoso; great-granddaughter, Mariah Rae Cadotte; son, Francis L. Wiggins, Jr.; brother, Peter Edward Wiggins; and nephew, Joel Rufus.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Odanah.
Interment will take place in Odanah Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. today and continue until 10:45 a.m. on Monday, at the Bad River Community Center, in Odanah. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, with lay minister, Cecelia George officiating, at the Bad River Community Center, in Odanah.
Arrangements are by Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland.
Ann Stenak
Ann Stenak, 87, formerly of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Riverview Manor in Wisconsin Rapids. Ann was born August 21, 1915, in Colorado, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Yerman) Jordan, Sr. On August 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Edmund H. Stenak at Ironwood, Mich. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Mike) Regan of Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren, Erin Regan of Raleigh, N.C. and twin boys Nathan and Nicholas Regan of Milwaukee, a brother, Tony Jordan of Baton Rough, La.; one sister, Josephine Manley of Stockwell, Ind. and many very special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edmund on Dec. 2, 1995, two brothers, Joseph Jordan, Jr. and Victor Jordan; four sisters, Mary Johnson, Christine Larson, Frieda Pufall and Justine Kamke.
A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland with Dr. Darrel Robertson officiating.
Interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, Ashland, will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home in Ashland on Monday.
