1952-2008
Marilyn Theresa Slipek, a lifelong resident of Thorp, died peacefully on June 12, 2008 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Edward Subel
1922-2008
Former Rib Lake resident, Edward J. Subel, 85, Muskego, died Sunday, June 8. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 12 at St. Leonard Catholic Church in Muskego. Private interment was at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Ernest Tervi
Ernest A. Tervi, 55, Wausau, died Sunday, June 15 after a long battle with cancer at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, with family and friends at his side. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at Brainard Funeral Home in Wausau, with Rev. David Clements officiating. Burial will be on Saturday, June 21 at 11 a.m. at Mount Olive Cemetery in Westboro.
Visitation will be held from 9 until 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home where at 10:30 the Wausau Elks Club will honor Ernest with a farewell gathering and service.

Jack Wild
1936-2008
Jack E. Wild, age 71, of Abbotsford, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 as a result of a tractor accident while he was doing repair work at his home outside of Abbotsford, in the Town of Mayville. A Mass of Christian Burial for Jack was held Monday, June 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Abbotsford, with Rev. Gerard Willger officiating. Helen Schultz was the organist for Tim Schindler as the soloist. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery's in the Town of Little Black, Taylor County.

Donald Clark
1922-2008
Donald Clark, 86, Colby, died Sunday, July 6 at Pine Ridge Assisted Living in Colby. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby, with Rev. Mark Neumann officiating. Burial was at Colby Memorial Cemetery.
Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Colby assisted the family with arrangements.

Mary Hoehn
1925-2008
Mary D. Hoehn, 83, Holcombe, died Wednesday, July 9 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls. A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, July 12 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilman, with Father John Long officiating. Inurnment was at Mount Nebo Cemetery in Jump River.
Plombon Funeral Service of Gilman assisted the family with arrangements.
The former Mary Horvath was born May 28, 1925 in Chicago, Ill. to the late Joseph and Magdalene (Brozman) Horvath. She moved with her family to the Hannibal area where she grew up and attended rural schools, graduating from Hannibal High School. She then lived and worked in Chicago, Ill. for many years before moving back to the Hannibal area where she worked as a secretary for the Gilman school system. On December 31, 1981 in Sheldon, she married Raymond Hoehn, who preceded her in death.
She enjoyed visiting with her many friends, spending time traveling and solving crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her stepchildren, Carol (George) Mudgett of Miller Dam, Beverly (Jeff) Mayer of Stetsonville, Janice Nichols of Medford, Kathy Immormino of Gilman, Patty (Paul) McNeil of Orem, Utah, Richard (Laurie) Hoehn of Jump River and Robert (Judy) Hoehn and Thomas Hoehn, both of Chippewa Falls.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Frank, Joe, Andy, Steve and John; and four sisters, Julie, Margie, Anne and Helen.

Clarence Nagel
1906-2008
Clarence Marvin Nagel, 102, died Sunday, July 6. Burial was at the National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Gerald Viergutz
1937-2008
Gerald M. Viergutz, 70, Bartow, Fla., died Saturday, July 12 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 17 at 11 a.m. at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford, with Rev. Kenneth A. Dix officiating. Burial will be at Athens Public Cemetery in Athens.

Viola Zielke
1915-2008
Viola M. Zielke, 93, Prentice, died Saturday, July 12 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 16 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Town of Spirit, with Rev. Roger Sloan officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery in the Town of Spirit. Active pallbearers were Christopher Kolasa, Richard Zielke, Ken Swanson, Norman Zeman, David Lind and Darrel Lind. Honorary pallbearer was Roger Zielke.
Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
The former Viola Swanson was born March 13, 1915 in Spirit to the late August John and Emma Catrina (Johnsson) Swanson. She attended Chatewie Graded School, then worked on the family farm.
On June 28, 1941 in Prentice, she married Henry August Zielke, who preceded her in death on January 28, 1984. They moved to Dayton, Ohio. While Henry served during World War II, she was employed by a defense contractor. After the war ended, they moved back to the Town of Spirit to the family farm and purchased it from her father. After her husband's death, she continued to live on the farm until 1995 when she moved to the Briarwood apartments in Prentice.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Women of Spirit and the Liberty Bell Homemakers, and attended Brantwood Senior Center. She enjoyed traveling, walking, writing letters to family and friends, writing poetry, gardening, cooking, and she especially enjoyed visiting with her family.
Survivors include two children, Pamela Zielke of Tomahawk and the Fox Valley, and Darwin (Donna) of Medford; two sisters, her twin, Emily Burgeson and Victoria Nelson, both of Ogema; special friend, Wiho Maki of Prentice; four grandchildren, Merchelle (Christopher) Kolasa of Sparta, Malinda Zielke of Athens, Eric Zielke of Arcata, Calif. and Sarah Zielke of Ashland; three great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Tyler and Brandon Kolasa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Daryl Wayne; two brothers, Henry and Gustaf; and three sisters and five brothers-in-law, Gerda (Ragnar) Nelson, Esther (George) Petcu, Edith (Walter) Haybert, Herbert Burgeson and Ted Nelson.
Memorials in her honor may be given to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Mary Lee Andresen
(1921-2007)
Former Medford resident Mary Lee Andresen, 86, Oswego, Ill., died December 26, 2007 at Hillside Care Center, Yorkville, Ill. from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. A memorial mass will take place at Saturday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville with Mary’s brother, Rev. Frederick Brost officiating. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Interment of her cremated remains will take place at Medford Evergreen Cemetery.
Hemer Funeral Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
The former Mary Brost was born November 23, 1921at Marshfield to the late George and Leona (Gelhaus) Brost. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Medford and was a graduate of Medford High School and was a 1944 graduate of La Crosse State Teachers College; she also did graduate studies at Northern Illinois University. Her marriage to Tom C. Andresen, who survives, took place in 1946 in La Crosse. She had a life-long commitment to children with special needs and over 30 years of service in the teaching profession in schools in Illinois. After their retirement, they resided in the Hayward area. Recently they returned to Illinois to live nearer their children. She was devoted to her Catholic faith, her life, rooted in that faith, was never uprooted.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four children Patricia Smith of Sandwich, Ill., Mary (Lyle) Frola of Oswego, Kristen Andresen of Hayward, and Thomas (Patty) Andresen of Litchfield, N.H.; six grandchildren, Roland James Smith, Kimberly, Benjamin and Kathleen Frola, and Thomas Jr. and Brian Andresen; two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Kathryn Andresen; six sisters, Audrey (Richard) Jindrich of Denver, Colo., Eva Boyce of Wauwatosa, Sister Georgia of Sisters of the School of St. Francis, Milwaukee, Patricia (Lorin) Schneider-Nickley of La Crosse, Donna Yamasaki of Goleta, Calif., and Janice Brost of Milwaukee and three brothers-Father Frederick Brost of Stetsonville; John Brost of Wauwatosa, and David P. Brost of Medford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Timothy in 1983, two brothers, Robert and Richard Brost; three sisters-Josephine and Francis Brost in infancy, and Nancy Brost as a child.

Ralph Berndt
(1922-2008)
Ralph H. Berndt, 85, died April 12, 2008 in Maple Valley, Wash. An inurnment service was held Monday, April 21 at Greenwood Memorial Park with the Veterans of Foreign Wars chaplain officiating and military honors by the Maple Valley VFW Post No. 5052.

Gerald DeStaercke
(1936-2008)
Gerald H. “Jerry” DeStaercke, 71, Gilman, passed away Monday, July 7 at Memorial Health Center in Medford. Services will be Thursday, July 10 at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gilman with Pastor Steven Haag officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadowbrook Cemetery, Gilman.
Plombon Funeral Service of Gilman is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jerry DeStaercke was born December 1, 1936 in Green Bay to the late Adolph and Dorothy (Warrichiet) DeStaercke. He grew up in Green Bay and graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1955 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1959.
On August 7, 1971 he was united in marriage to Jane Bader in Slayton, Minn.
He taught for one year in Lena and then worked for a short time at Kreuger Metal Products in Green Bay. In 1967 he took a teaching position as a social studies teacher at the Gilman High School.
He retired in 1996 after 30 years as an educator. Jerry also served almost 25 years as either trustee or village president in Gilman and was the president of the Gilman Industrial Foundation, and an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Gilman.
Upon his retirement, Jerry became his family’s historian and genealogist. He was a lifelong football fan and a Green Bay Packer season ticket holder since 1957. The only team that could come close to his love for the Packers was his devotion to the Gilman Pirates. He announced Pirate play-by-play for many years.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Jane, of Gilman; a son, Benjamin of Madison; two brothers, Dick (Sharon) and Michael (Jane) DeStaercke, both of Green Bay; a sister, Clarice (Jim) Bletcher of Sussex; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marge and Patricia.

Walter Hardrath
1917-2008
Walter W. Hardrath, age 90, of Shawano, formerly of Spencer, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at a local nursing home. Born on September 28, 1917 in Riplinger, he was the son of the late Henry and Ann (Kuester) Hardrath. In 1936 Walter graduated from Marshfield High School and three years later attended the UW-Stout Trade School program. After trade school, he farmed for a number of years on the family farm. In July of 1941 Walter was united in marriage to Mary Edwards and together the couple made their home in the Spencer area. In 1954 he opened up a gas station and body shop on Highway 13 and ran it until the mid 1960s. Walter then worked for Pathfinder Mobil Homes and later Pittsville Homes, retiring in 1978. On February 8, 1993 Mary preceded Walter in death, and shortly after he moved to the Shawano area. Walter was very talented regarding all metals and woods and enjoyed carpentry work. He was known as a "jack of all trades."
Walter is survived by two daughters, Fay Reno of Abbotsford and Donna (Tom) Gueths of Shawano; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Nona Schulz and Fern Treptow; his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 6 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Spencer, with Rev. Rebekah Tarras officiating. Burial was at West Spencer Cemetery. Memorial funds were established for Maple Lane Care Center in Shawano and St. John's Lutheran Church in Spencer. Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano assisted the family with arrangements.

Katherine Hauser
(1943-2008)
Katherine M. Hauser, 64, Mitchell, S.D. died Wednesday July 2, 2008 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell from brain cancer. Funeral services were Monday July 7 at Holy Family Catholic Church with private burial at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Will Funeral Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
