John V. Batha
John V. Batha Surrounded by his loving family, Professor John Batha lost his courageous battle with cancer on Friday, April 13, 2001. Born on July 30, 1926, John was a long-time resident of Waukesha.

He attended Randall Elementary School and Waukesha High School where he developed lasting friendships and became a singer in a popular quartet. Later In life, his group of Waukesha High School friends became known as "The Good Old Boys."

John followed a family legacy by attending Carroll College. Both his parents, Vince and Althea, graduated from Carroll where Vince returned to coach and to teach physics and mathematics. The carillon in Main Hall memorializes Professor Vincent Batha.

John's attendance at Carroll was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, trained as a navigator, and was discharged in December of 1945. Upon his return to Carroll after the war, he met his soul mate, Jean Jacquelin Otto, from Sussex, whom he married in June of 1949.

After graduating from Carroll with a B.A., John taught biology in Fort Atkinson, WI., where for two years he also was vice-principal. After his father's sudden death in 1956, John moved back to the Waukesha area. He served on the opening staff of the new Muskego High School. Then, four years later, joined the staff of the new New Berlin High School.

In those years, John helped establish, and then served as president of The Milwaukee Suburban Science Teacher's Association. He earned a M.S. in Education at the University Of Wisconsin in 1954 and later an M.A. in Biology. In 1954-55, John received a Ford Foundation Grant to study marine biology in California, Florida and Massachusetts. He attended National Science Foundation Institutes at Iowa State College in 1957 and The University of Wyoming in 1958. He studied three summers at The University of Wisconsin in Madison on a fellowship from The American Association for the Advancement of Science, engaging in special summer research programs.

He returned to his beloved alma matter, Carroll College, in 1964 as an assistant professor of physiology and invertebrate zoology. Determined to become more than "Vince Batha's son", he succeeded in creating a name for himself through his work as a Limnologist (fresh water biology). John earned his Ph.D. in 1978 from UW- Madison.

During his career at Carroll, John took groups of students to Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, and Mexico as part of Carroll's New Cultural Experiences Program. He had been quoted as saying, "the students experience the dramatic impact of living in a culture and climate which is completely unlike what they are used to…….that can be the kind of experience which gives them an entirely new perspective…many students when exposed to that extreme poverty for the first time, can't help but take a serious look inside themselves. Some even decide to change majors so they can begin careers that have sociological impact." John considered his NCEP teaching to have been a very important part of his professional career. He saw it as his "legacy."

While vacationing in Mexico in 1977, John became concerned about the preservation of the water quality of Lake Chapala, the largest fresh water lake in Mexico. In 1979, on a Fulbright scholarship, he spent his sabbatical at the Laboratorio de estudios limnologicos in Guadalajara, Mexico. He spent the following five summers working with the Mexican scientists at the laboratory as well as conducting his own research. He was honored by the Mexican government for his work educating the people and preserving the lake.

In 1989 John retired from Carroll after 40 years in the "Ed Biz" as he put it. He did, however, continue as the "Voice of the Pioneers" on the P.A. system during football season, often exhibiting his rather outrageous sense of humor. During his retirement he expanded his love of music by singing in and serving on the Board of Directors of the Waukesha Choral Union. He also sang in the Brookfield Highlands Barbershop Chorus until he became too ill to continue. He was an active member of the Waukesha Noon Optimist Club, as well as a member of the Board of Directors.

In 1998, John and Jean were recognized for their work with the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas receiving the "Unsung Heroes" award.

In addition to spending time at their Algoma cottage on the shore of Lake Michigan, he and Jean continued their travels to Mexico, Central America , The British Isles, Europe and the U.S.S.R.

John is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Jean, daughters Jane (John Spaulding) Batha, Joy (Joe) Smogor, and son Joel (Megan) Batha and grandsons Vincent and Nicholas Rutzinski.

The family would like to thank Drs. William Davies, Zant, Crelin, and Sanchez and the nurses and staff of the regional Cancer Clinic of Waukesha Memorial Hospital as well as caregivers and volunteers from the Rolland D. Nelson/Crossroads Hospice Program. John will be missed for his wonderful stories, jokes and his bad game of golf.

A memorial celebration in John's honor is being planned for Saturday, May 5, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Shattuck Auditorium at Carroll College. Pastor Bill Humphreys will officiate. Following the memorial celebration, refreshments will be shared in the Campus Center Lobby. A scholarship in John’s name is being established at Carroll College to be awarded to an outstanding biology major to enable further study in ecological science. Also, memorials to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Reseach Center , 1275 York Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10021 would be appreciated.
