Benford “Benny” O. Brostuen, 85, of Beloit, WI, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 20, 1918 in Beloit, WI, the son of Ole and Helga Magnuson Brostuen. Benny was a veteran of World War II serving from 1942 to 1945 in the 8th Air Force as a Sergeant. He served 25 months in England. Benny married Ruth Hogan on December 6, 1945 in Beloit, WI. He was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for 34 years retiring in 1979 as a Demurrage Clerk. Benny also worked for Louis Vigh Tool and Die for a number of years and was formerly employed by Rosman, Uehling, Kinzer Funeral Home. Benny was a lifetime member and was very active in Luther Valley Lutheran Church. He was a former member of the choir and held many different offices with in the church

Benny enjoyed sports and was active in golfing, bowling, horseshoe and volleyball. He was a member of the Beloit Y.M.C.A. volleyball team which was State Champions from 1950 through 1960 and were inducted into the Beloit Hall of Fame and received the Everett Haskell Achievement Award. Highlights of Benny’s sports memories was when he shook hands and talked with Arnold Palmer while playing golf with his son-in-law, playing golf in Scotland, and remembering his son Arne’s good hit at Windy Acres in Monroe, WI. Benny also enjoyed music, playing his mandolin and singing. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of 58 years; his children, Julie (Jack) English of LaCrosse, WI, and Arne Brostuen of Beloit, WI; grandsons, James English of California, Michael English of Florida, and John English of LaCrosse, WI; step granddaughter, Beth (Rob) Baxter of Roscoe, IL; step great granddaughters, Chloe and Brenna; like a second son, Danny (Gloria) Trail and family of Beloit, WI; twin sister, Bernadine (Lee) Gonzalez of Littleton, CO; brother, Alden Brostuen of South Beloit, IL; sister, Sedora Brostuen of Beloit, WI; aunt, Pearl Magnuson of Mt. Horeb, WI; many nieces, nephews, cousins, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Rueben, grandparents, and two sister-in-laws, Kay Brostuen and Elva Brostuen.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in the Luther Valley Church, with the Reverend Mary Froiland officiating. Burial will be in Luther Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the Luther Valley Church.

Robert “Bud” Bittrick, 92, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 in Beloit Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born October 11, 1911 in Beloit, WI, the son of Otto and Bertha Kramp Bittrick. Robert married Elaine Reynolds in 1936 in St. Paul, MN. She predeceased him on April 24, 1984. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army as a Corporal. He received the Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Service Medal. Robert was owner and operator of Custom Manufacturing a Tool and Die Company in St. Paul, MN where he lived for forty years.

Survivors include his nieces, Jean Bittrick of Beloit, WI, Joan (Robert) Schiller of Orinda, CA, and Donna (Duane) Turner of Madison, WI; several great nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers; Walter, Richard and Harold Bittrick; sisters, Lillian Riker, Evelyn Anderson and Grace Bittrick.

Private burial will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI assisted the family with arrangements.

Orville Ralph Beilke, 85 of Beloit, WI died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born January 12, 1919 in Jefferson, WI. the son of William and Hulda Borchardt Beilke. Orville graduated from the Jefferson High School. He served from 1940 thru 1945 during World War II, in the United States Army and then in the United States Navy. Orville married Lula Jacobson on February 19, 1949 in Belvidere, IL. She predeceased him on March 12, 2000. He worked at the Beloit Daily News for over thirty-five years. Orville started as a Pressman and retired in 1981 as the Foreman in the Pressroom. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2306, American Pigeon Association, was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan and fisherman.

Survivors include three children, Robert “Jack” (Mary Lou) Chatsey of Beloit, WI; Jeanne (Earnest) Bryan of Hayesville, Kansas; Donna Demos of Beloit, WI; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one great great grandchild, brother, John (Dorothy) Beilke of Jefferson, WI, sister, Phyllis (Leroy) Hess of Jefferson, WI and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, four brothers, three sisters and his wife Lula predeceased him.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 15, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. With the Reverend Roger Elliott officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, March 14, 2004 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in his name to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Robert Duane “Bob” Burns, 74, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at 4:50 p.m. in Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing.

He was born on January 26, 1930 in Racine, WI, the son of Lucius A. and Emma Fraze Burns. Bob married Virginia Simpson on April 6, 1972 in Woodstock, IL. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1947 to 1965 as a Paratrooper and was in the Medical Corp as a medical technician. In 1950 to 1952 he served in the Korean War. Bob’s final rank was Sergeant First Class.

Bob retired from the United States Postal Service in 1989 after 17 years of service and moved to Horseshoe Bend, AR in November of that year. Bob returned to Beloit in December of 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Beloit, WI; two daughters, Ellen J. Burns of St. Louis Bay, MS and Camellia R. Marvin of Beloit, WI; three stepsons, Jimmy D. (Cheryl) Simpson of Beloit, WI, Dennis L. (Cherry) Simpson of Lawton, OK and Dee A. (Vicki) Simpson of Beloit, WI; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren and one not yet born; two sisters, Betty Lou Baier of Janesville, WI and Beverly Gladden of Kennedale, TX; one brother, Larry (Jeri) Burns of Janesville, WI.

He was predeceased by his parents and stepson, Robert L. Simpson.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Norman Starks officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services in the funeral home.

David E. Birch, 63, of Beloit, WI, of Beloit, WI, passed away on February 18, 2004 in his home after a long illness.

He was born September 12, 1940. David attended South Beloit Schools. As a young man he served several years as a volunteer fireman for the South Beloit Fire Department. He married Loretta (Phillips) Bullock on August 3, 1968 in South Beloit, IL. He was employed for 35 years at Taylor Freezer in Rockton, IL, retiring in 1995. David was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in South Beloit, IL.

Survivors include his dear wife, Loretta of Beloit, WI; one brother, Wayne (Dorothy) Birch of South Beloit, IL; two sisters, Nancy Burt of Beloit, WI, and Juanita Birch of South Beloit, IL; step son, Michael (Jill) Bullock of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Nina (Jim) Benson of Rockford, IL, Kelly (Jason) Bradley of Ft. Lewis, WA, and Adam Bullock of Beloit, WI; two great grandsons, Jaylen Bullock and Skyelar Bradley; brothers-in-law, Ralph (Ruth) Phillips of Tomah, WI, Irvin (Irene) Phillips of South Beloit, IL, Don (Mary) Phillips and Richard (Pat) Phillips both of Beloit, WI; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother, Flossie Birch, sister, Patricia Meyers, infant sister, Donna Lee, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Adeline and Lome Phillips.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2004 in the Faith Lutheran Church with the Reverend Jay Quinn officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Saturday in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in his name to Beloit Regional Hospice.

Marian K. Broyles, 89, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004 in the Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 24, 1914 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Lucille Rynott Enger. Marian graduated from the Burlington, IA High School. She married Huston Broyles on August 17, 1937 in Kahoka, MO. He predeceased her on October 11, 2003. Marian was a very active member of the Second Congregational Church and the church choir. She was also a member of the Naomi Circle and the Treble Cleff of Beloit.

Survivors include her children, Kathleen (Doug) Cashion of Janesville, WI and James Broyles of Beloit, WI; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Betty) Enger of Spencer, IA, and Mark (Vonnee) Enger of Falls Church, VA; nieces and nephews.

Her parents predeceased her.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Douglas Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Saturday in the funeral home.

Janet R. Baumann, 84, of Scottsdale, AZ and formerly of Beloit, WI, passed away January 25, 2004, in Scottsdale.

She was born November 6, 1919 in Beardstown, IL, the daughter of Charles and Margaret Tucker Bartholomew. Janet married her loving husband of 51years, Henry J. Baumann on March 15, 1941 in Three Rivers, MI. He predeceased her on June 10, 1995.

Janet was a wonderful homemaker and mother. She enjoyed selling Avon for over 20 years and lived on Newark Road for 48 years. She was a Charter Member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Janet enjoyed traveling the last 10 years of her life. She instilled a great love of God in her children. She will be sadly missed.

Janet is survived by her three children, Charles (Phyllis) Baumann, Henry (Kathy) Baumann both of Beloit, WI, and daughter, Jan Berndt(Dr. Tom) of Scottsdale, AZ; two sisters, Evelyn Sword and Mary Gibson, both of Rockford, IL, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, and sister, Micky Stafford.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 in Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend Dennis L. Pingel officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Rockford, IL. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until the time of services in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Arthritis Foundation.

Lucy T. Belken, 91, of Beloit, WI, died January 1, 2004 in Alden Meadow Park Health Care Center.

She was born on July 4, 1912 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of John and Sophia Kryzewich Bravis. Lucy was a 1930 graduate of Beloit High School. She married Marcellus Belken on June 28, 1947 in Beloit, WI. He predeceased her on September 23, 1993.

Lucy was employed by Freeman Shoe Company and she retired from JC Penney. She was a charter member of Our Lady Of The Assumption Catholic Church.

Survivors include her children, Edward (Charlene) Belken of Rockton, IL, Pat Parker of Beloit, WI, Kathleen (Steve) Bittorf of Marshfield, WI and John (Debbie) Belken of Sun Prairie, WI; 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Judith and great grandson, David.

Prayer services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady Of The Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Thabor Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to the OLA building fund.

Russell F. Bryden, 83, of South Beloit, IL, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 in his home.

He was born on July 22, 1920 in Beloit, WI, the son of Ross F. and Beulah Troxel Bryden. Russell was a 1939 graduate of Hononegah High School. He was a WWII veteran serving with the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. Russell married Carolyn M. Lindstrom on September 14, 1946 in the Parsonage of the Second Congregational Church, Beloit, WI.

Russell was employed by Fairbanks Morse & Company from 1943 to 1944. In 1946 he went to work for Bryden Motors until 1950. From 1952 to 1974 Russell was owner and operator of Bryden Excavating and Bryden Building and Development. In 1974 he returned to farming until his retirement to Florida in 1988. He returned to South Beloit, IL in 1995. Russell was a former member of the Janesville Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; three children, Barbara (Barry) Orcutt of Beloit, WI, Raymond (Alice) Bryden of Janesville, WI and Teri (Roger) Lang of Beloit, WI; ten grandchildren, Brandon Orcutt, Brenda (Kokou) Figah, Brian Orcutt, Dawn (Andy) Bryden, Janet (Ryan) Bryden, Jason (Adrian) Duncan, Jeremy (Amber) Duncan, Lacey Duncan, Eric Lang and Jennifer Lang; six great grandchildren; one brother, Dr. James (Carol) Bryden of Sedalia, MO; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Bill Bryden.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Douglas Gray officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in his name to Beloit Regional Hospice.
