Elizabeth M. “Liz” Buckner, 83, of Beloit, WI, died Thursday, December 25, 2003 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born on April 17, 1920 in Beveren Waas, Belgium, the daughter of Theofiel and Floriene (Van Reamdonck) Van Remoortere. Liz came to America July 2, 1922 with her mother and sister Leona. She was confirmed at St. Jude Catholic Church in June of 1934. Liz married Robert W. Buckner on August 28, 1942 in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Liz was employed by Freeman’s Shoe Company from 1938 to 1950. She was a homemaker for 16 years to raise her family. She then went back to work for JCPenny from 1966 to 1982. Liz liked to fish with her husband and family. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, knitting, embroidering and crafts. Liz was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Robert; two children, Dennis G. (Val Johnson) Buckner of Beloit, WI and Janice A. (Jack) Bell of Beloit, WI; five grandchildren, Robert (Brenda) Petitt of Janesville, WI, Ami (Ryan) Schroeder of Delavan, WI, Lori (fiancé Mike Simonson) Buckner of Janesville, WI, Lisa (Jeremy) Lindstrom of Wisconsin Rapids, and Tamara Buckner of Beloit, WI; five great grandchildren; three nieces, Lavonne (Robert) Olin of Brodhead, WI, Carla (Richard) Whitehead of Durand, IL and Leanne (William) Johnson of Monroe, WI; a close friend, Dorothy Bauman of Beloit, WI.

She was predeceased by her parents, one son, John Allen Buckner, sister, Leona Fairman and a brother at infancy, Remi Van Remoortere.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Monday in the funeral home.

A memorial will be established at a later date.

James E. “Jim” Burden, 62, of Beloit, WI, died Thursday, December 18, 2003 in Beloit Memorial Hospital after a long battle with kidney and heart disease.

He was born on January 26, 1941 in Iron Mountain, MI, the son of Roland E. and Almeda G. Bessey Burden. Jim was a 1960 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School and attended Rhode Island University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1960 to1964 aboard the USS Essex and the USS Forestall, making three world cruises. Jim participated in and given commendations for the Bay of Pigs, Texas Tower Rescue and served as a color guard for the president in Boca Chica, FL. He married Victoria L. Peters on July 23, 1966 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Beloit, WI. They remarried on April 21, 2001 in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Beloit, WI.

Jim was employed by Beloit Corporation from 1964 to 1966. He then was employed by Chrysler Corporation in Belvidere for 36 years (1966 until his retirement in 2001). After Jim’s retirement he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Jim was a Little League coach for the city baseball program. He was a past member of the Beloit Rifle Club. He was vice president of the Citizen’s for Better Community, focusing on updating code enforcements for the city. Jim was a feisty man and enjoyed hunting, fishing, painting the house, bowling, and yard work. He always wore his hunting hat and his truck only went north. His grandchildren called him Pa-Pa and he would always say, “Pa-Pa loves you.” Jim loved cooking and along with friends would put on a Wild Game Feed at the Preservation Park for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Victoria; two children, Allen E. (JoLynn) Burden of Janesville, WI and Amanda (Randy Clites) Burden of Sterling, IL; four grandchildren, Austin, Elizabeth, Emilee, Booker and a granddaughter expected in April 2004; one sister, Lynn (Robert) Lentine of Beloit, WI; nephew, James R. Lentine of Cudahy, WI; two brothers-in-law, Dennis (Allison) Peters and Lon (Cheryl) Peters both of Beloit, WI; sister-in-law, Jill Peters of Atlanta, GA; niece, Tamara Peters of Beloit, WI; nephews, Jared Peters and Justin Peters both of Beloit, WI.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Ian Stirrat officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in his name.

Charles Brunelle, 84, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing.

He was born on January 29, 1919 in Fairfax, Vermont, the son of Joseph A. and Minnie Sheldon Brunelle. Charles was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He married Elizabeth Turner on June 15, 1946 in Winooski, VT. She predeceased him on November 11, 2000.

Charles was employed by Fairbanks Morse & Company and Colt Industries, retiring in 1984. He was a former member of the V.F.W. Post 2306 and the Beloit Field Archers. Charles enjoyed repairing bicycles for the neighborhood children.

Survivors include his sister, Dorothy Burbo of Vermont; a niece, Laurie (Mark) Nielsen of Vermont; cousins, Ralph (Jacqueline) Byers of Janesville, WI, Evelyn (Arnold) Sloniker and Clara (James) McFall both of Beloit, WI.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers and sisters.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2003 in St. Thomas Catholic Church with Fr. James Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until the time of services Friday in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in his name to the American Cancer Society.

Avis Lillian Bord, 98 years 11 months 4 days, of Beloit, WI, left this earthly life to join her heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born December 29, 1904 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Henry and Floy Sperry Pann.

Avis was employed by Wisconsin Telephone Company, retiring in 1969. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club, Beloit Hospital Auxiliary, and R.S.V.P. Avis was a very active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was involved with the Women’s Guild and the Altar Guild.

Survivors include her children, Gloria (Gerald) Hereford, Beth M. Schmuck both of Beloit, WI, and Wesley (Ann) Bord of Scottsdale, AZ; eight grandchildren, Kathy (Tom) Ikeman, Scott (Nita) Hereford, Amy (Paul) Schroeder, Laura Bord, Todd (Nancy) Hereford, Cynthia (Terry) Zens, Jane (Jim) Whitehurst, and John (Cyndy) Bord; 15 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, one son, Wallace B. Bord, daughter-in-law, Mitzie, two sisters, Nettie Leffingwell and Bessie Heyerdahl, two brothers, Glen and Fred Pann.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2003 in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend Mark B. Yates and Reverend David Zimdars officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday December 7, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Martha A. Bray, 99, of Beloit, WI, died Thursday, November 20, 2003 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born September 24, 1904 in Magnolia Township, the daughter of August C. and Bertha Klatt Thom. Martha married Walter J. Bloedel on January 3, 1923 in Antigo, WI. He predeceased her in August of 1944. She then married Elmer Doherty on March 3, 1951 in Dubuque, IA. He predeceased her in June of 1955. Martha later married Chester Bray on October 2, 1965 in Beloit, WI. He predeceased her in May 1978.

Martha was employed by Mercy Hospital in Janesville, WI and for Mr. & Mrs. E.H. Neese, retiring in 1967. She was a member of Wm. J. Huemphner Auxiliary, Barracks 2564, YMCA Senior Citizens Club, and Grinnell Hall. Martha was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Church.

Survivors include her children, Robert (Betty) Bloedel of Janesville, WI and Ruth (John) Kannengeiser of Beloit, WI; three grandchildren, Susan (Matt) Klein of Arizona, Cheryl (Gregory) Richter of Pewaukee, WI, and Sandra (Joseph) Sagona of Beloit, WI; three great grandchildren, Jeremy Sagona, Benjamin Sagona and Joshua Sagona all of Beloit, WI.

She was predeceased by her parents, daughter, Marcella June Bloedel, siblings, Frank Thom, Lena Bienash and Hattie Hackbarth.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2003 in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend Mark B.Yates officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Center Cemetery, Janesville, WI with a 2:00 p.m. graveside service. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

Memorials in Martha’s name may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Austin J. Bennett, 9, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Beloit Memorial Hosptial of a lifelong illness.

He was born February 5, 1994 in Beloit, WI, the son of John W. and Nikki L. Rounds Bennett.
Austin enjoyed horseback riding through Smiles in Delavan, WI; and in May took a trip to Disney World through the Make a Wish Foundation. He loved watching TV. Austin’s favorite shows were Blues Clues, Wheel of Fortune and Press Your Luck. His laughter was contagious to his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, brothers, Dayton of Beloit, WI, and Jordan of Brodhead, WI, grandparents, Irene Blazer of Beloit, WI, Frank (Lina) Bennett of Winter, WI, great-grand parents, George “Bud” (JoAnn) Rounds of Beloit, WI; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his Grandma-Great Joan Marlene Oldenburg Rounds of Beloit, WI, Great Grandma MeMe of Beloit, WI, Great Grandma and Grandpa Bennett of Beloit, WI.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, and from 10:30 a.m. until the services Thursday in the church. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 30, 2003 in First Assembly of God Church, with Mark Place officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the family or mylar balloons which will be donated to University Wisconsin Madison Children’s Hospital.

Nell V. Black , 94, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, October 22, 2003 in Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing.

She was born October 16, 1909 in Marysville, KS, the daughter of Edward C. and Virginia Kienlen Black. Nell had nine brothers and sisters in this family. When she was four years old her mother died and she went to live with William and Martha Black at their farm in Rock Springs, WI. Besides her birth siblings she had four older brothers who looked out for her; Ernest, Reuben, Evan and Willis, two other brothers died as young children. Nell graduated from Reedsburg High School. After graduating she moved to Atlanta, GA and Cleveland, OH. She attended Fenn College and was the first president of the Women’s League there. Nell retired from the brokerage firm of McDonald and Company in 1974. In 1984 she moved to Beloit to be closer to her family. Nell loved books, reading and English.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins, David (DeeDee) Black, Richard (Cynthia) Black, Judith (Al) Huffman, Margaret Guadarrama, and Ronald (Julie) Lange.

She was predeceased by her parents, all of her brothers, sisters and a nephew.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2003 in the First Baptist Church, 617 Public Avenue, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Gene Van Galder officiating. Burial will be in Shirland Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until the time of services Monday in the Church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Geraldine R. (Gerry) Beier, 62, of Beloit, WI, passed away in her sleep on Thursday, October 16, 2003 in her home after a courageous six month battle with malignant brain tumors.

She was born June 21, 1941 in Thorp, WI, the daughter of George and Gladys Hoffman Burzynski. Geraldine attended Thorp area schools. She married Roger C. Beier on September 26, 1959 in St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp, WI.

In addition to her full-time job of wife and mother, Gerry enjoyed her hobby of refunding. She had a love of all animals; her beloved cats Precious and Angel were a constant source of joy for her, as was their predecessor, Smokey. Her depth of compassion and care for her family and her pets was evident to everyone whose life she touched.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Roger; one daughter, Crystal both of Beloit, WI; her father, George Burzynski of Thorp, WI; two sisters, Gail (Clarence) of Thorp, WI and Ginger (David) Lieser of Cape Coral, FL. She shared a very special relationship with her aunt, Verna Burzinski of Thorp, WI.

Her mother, Gladys Burzynski who passed away March 10, 2003 preceded her in death.

No services will be held. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers or other forms of condolence, it was Gerry’s wish that donations be made in her name to the Rock County Humane Society in Janesville, WI or to Beloit Regional Hospice.
