James A. Cummings, 70, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 27, 1933 in Belvidere, IL, the son of Chester and Pauline Dulgar Cummings. James was a 1951 graduate of Belvidere High School and a graduate of Monmouth College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class. James married Claudette Uting on November 30, 1957 in Rockford, IL.

James was employed by Newell Corporation of Freeport, IL and G.C. Electronics of Rockford, IL as production control manager. After his retirement, James managed the Red Barn Golf Course in Rockton, IL for several years. James had a great interest in sports and played baseball and basketball in high school and college. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. James was a member of Bridge Anonymous and several bridge playing groups. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and served on many committees. James was a former president of Habitat for Humanity. Proud to be a resident of the City of Beloit, James maintained a beautiful yard and home.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Claudette of Beloit, WI; children, Jennifer Cummings of Los Angeles, CA and Jason Cummings of St. Louis, MO; two grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob; one brother, Roger (Barbara) Cummings of Rockford, IL.

He was predeceased by his parents.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004 in the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Thomas Wanner officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the church. Burial will be in Argyle Cemetery, Caledonia, IL. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in his name to First Presbyterian Church or the Rock County Habitat for Humanity.

Frances Mary Clark, 92, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 in Pioneer Court.

She was born August 6, 1911 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Judge John B. and Mary E. Collins Clark. Frances was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Library School.

Frances was employed by the public libraries in Madison, WI, Monroe, WI, Wausau, WI and Roanoke, VA. She was the director of the Beloit Public Library from 1944 until her retirement in 1973. Frances was a member of the Beloit Historical Society, Y.W.C.A., Catholic Near East Welfare Association, St. Jude League of Women Voters, St. Jude Catholic Church, and the Marian Guild. She was a former member of the Wisconsin Library Association, American Library Association, Ned Halister Bird Club, Hall of Fame Committee and the Greater Beloit Association of Commerce.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Dorothy Clark of Beloit, WI; beloved aunt to three nephews, John (Kay) Clark of Beloit, WI, Robert (Cyndy) Clark of Milton,WI and Peter (Lisa) Clark of DeKalb, IL; four nieces, Mary Jo (Walter) Kaster, Carol (Jerry) Dunham, Barbara (Ron) Pearson all of DeKalb, IL and Jane (Mike) O'Meara of Eau Claire, WI; 18 great nieces and nephews; nine great great nieces and nephews; cousins, Robert (Roberta) Gille of Rockford, IL and Sarajane (Robert) Lochner of Pewaukee, WI.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Dr. Philip Clark and Robert J. Clark; one sister, Geraldine Clark; and one sister-in-law, Pauline Clark.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004 in St. Jude Catholic Church with Fr. Steve Kortendick officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Beloit Library Foundation or Caritas.

John D. Cockrell, 80, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 24, 1923 in Arkansas, the son of John E. and Zonnie Roberts Cockrell. John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He married Charlotte Hayden on March 6, 1946 in Beloit, WI. She predeceased him on January 9, 1998.

John was employed by Meadow Gold Dairy 'Kerry Ingredients' and Beloit Memorial Hospital for 15 years. After his retirement in 1983, John went to work for Second Congregational Church for 5 years as the church custodian. He was a past member of the American Legion Post #332. John was a member, usher, deacon and past president of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Beloit Men's dart ball team. He loved to fish if they were biting, spending time at "Sophia's", family gatherings, but most of all he loved to play poker with 'his boys'. John's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his treasure.

John was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered as a man who loved God, his family and his country. John proudly wore his Navy uniform each Memorial Day in honor of his fellow veterans.

He will be lovingly remembered by his five daughters, Georgia (Larry) Cummins, Susan Cockrell both of Beloit, WI, Jill (Russell) Adler of Lodi, WI, Julie (Ron) O'Leary of Beloit, WI, and Hollie (Dr. Darren) Greenwell of Louisville, KY; 14 grandchildren, Jon Cockrell, Kim Hess, Laura Olson, Hope Watson, Sarah Wynn, Jason Adler, John Adler, Jerad Adler, Colleen Slonicker, Joshua Gillund, Shawn O'Leary, Kellie O'Leary, Megan Greenwell and Amelia Greenwell; 16 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lavonne (Glen) Hayden; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends; special friends, chief petty officer retired Patrick Masseur, Gene(Connie) Van Galder, Cindy and the 'gang' at Sophia's.

He was predeceased by his parents and four siblings.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2004 in the First Baptist Church with the Reverend Gene Van Galder officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Friday in the church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at a later date.

Bonnie M. Cheadle, 61 of Beloit WI, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 surrounded by her family and friends at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born December 29, 1942 in Punxsatawney, PA the daughter of Jack and Violet Wilson Swyers. Bonnie married C. James Cheadle on December 26, 1964. She graduated from Rockford Board of Education as a Licensed Practical Nurse and from Blackhawk Technical College in 1981 as a Register Nurse. Bonnie worked at Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing as the PM Supervisor. She was a member of the American Business Women.
She was a friend of Sun Valley Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her parents; Jack and Violet Swyers; children, Kelly A. (James) Maloney of Beloit, WI and Amy L. (Roscoe) Lucas of Beloit, WI, five grandchildren; Sean, Andrew, Joshua and Brendan Maloney, and Austin Lucas all of Beloit, WI, sisters Zella (David) Butler of Bluffton, IN and Deborah (Randy) Cliffton of Middleton, OH, several nieces and nephews, and James Cheadle of Beloit.

Bonnie was a devoted mother, grandmother and nurse. She absolutely adored her grandsons. Though our hearts are sad because she is gone, we rejoice in knowing that she can hold her baby Jacqueline again and that she can dance again. She loved to dance.

Her infant daughter Jacqueline Marie predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI with the Reverend Ian Stirrat from Sun Valley Presbyterian Church, 1650 Sun Valley, Beloit, WI officiating. Burial will be in the Baldwin Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 12, 2004 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, and Stateline Pregnancy Center.

Thelma Christensen, 84, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 5, 1919 in LaFarge, WI. The daughter of Arnt and Signa Hemstad Hagen.
Thelma married Harley Christensen on November 12, 1943. He predeceased her on August 8, 2003. She graduated from LaFarge WI High School and Sparta Business College. Thelma was Co-owner of the Christies Beauty Salon from 1964 - 1973. She was also employed by Beloit Employment Office, Fairbanks Morse & Company, Beloit State Bank and The Heritage Bank as an Executive Secretary until retirement in 1981.

Survivors include her two sons, Harley (Jeanne) Christensen of Woodlake, CA and Steven (Paulette) Christensen of Beloit, WI; four grandchildren, Melisa (Tim) McMahon of Beloit, WI, Scott Christensen of Waukesha, WI, Anna (Todd) Frohman of Vine Grove, KY, and Gabriella Schultz of Indian Springs, NV; five great grandchildren, Montana and Brayden McMahon, Alex Sheets, April and ReaAnne Schultz; one brother, Arnold (Inez) Hagen of LaFarge, WI; three sisters, Lenore Radtke of Port Washington, WI; Norma Onsager of Valders, WI; Doris (Russ) Helgren of Norwalk, WI

Her parents, two sisters; Alverta Nault and Marion Munson; and her husband predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 12, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 749 Bluff Street, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Jennifer Jelinek officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI and from 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, 2004, until the time of services in the church.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Evelyn Marie 'Evie' Cox, 86, died Monday, March 2, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital after a recent short illness.

She was born September 20, 1917 in Beloit to John and Eva Griffin Van Duesen and spent most of her life here, except for 3 years in Santa Ana California where she was sent during the great depression to live with an aunt. She graduated from Santa Ana California High School in 1935. After returning to Beloit, she met and married Joseph O. Cox in 1937. He predeceased her in 1984. Evelyn was a member of the First Congregational Church, a charter member of the Beloit Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Beloit Symphony Guild and Art League, and Chairwoman YMCA Country Fair.

Evie was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Country Club of Beloit, and only regretted that in all her years playing golf, she never had a hole in one. She was also an accomplished bridge player. During the Second World War, she managed Larkins Auto Supply for husband Joe while he was in the Army and also served as a Nurses Aid. In 1970 she became a dealer in antiques and was a partner in a number of antique shops and kiosks in Beloit and the surrounding area.

Evelyn is survived by two sons, Ronald O.(Rondi) Cox of Chicago and Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. William J. (Joanne) Cox of Irvine, California; four grandchildren, David Cox, Dana Smith, Ryan Cox, and Kelsey Cox; six great grandchildren; one sister; and eight nieces and nephews.

Evie was also predeceased by her parents, and three sisters.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, in the First Congregational Church with the Reverend Shawn Stapleton officiating, followed by a private family internment. There will be no visitation. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Beloit Regional Hospice.

Helen B. Chapel, 75, of South Beloit, IL, died Monday, February 2, 2004 in her home after a three year battle with Cancer.

She was born November 12, 1928 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Leon and Arriet Cain Perry. Helen was a 1946 graduate of South Beloit High School. She married Gerald Chapel on September 24, 1949 in Faith Lutheran Church, South Beloit, IL.

Helen was employed by Gardner Machine Company, Warner Electric, Beloit Corporation, Beloit Foundry, Country North in Roscoe, IL and Country Wear Clothing in Rockton, IL. She was co-owner and operator with her husband Gerald of Everett's Liquors Store in South Beloit, IL they retired in 2003. Helen was co-founder of the Class of 1946 'Birthday Club', where good friends meet once a month and have for over 58 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, art fairs, pottery and reading.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Gerald; two children, Nancy (Bob) Dyrek of Palos Heights, IL, and Brian (Penny) Chapel of Roscoe, IL; four grandchildren, Allison and Emily Dyrek, Bryan and Jenna Chapel; two sisters, Eula May (John) Wagner of Hudson, WI, and Joyce (James) Schuler of Beloit, WI; 16 nieces and nephews; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joan (Bill) Gundry of Roscoe, IL; many special friends.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2004 in Faith Lutheran Church, 1305 Blackhawk Blvd, South Beloit, IL, with the Reverend Jay Quinn officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

Memorials may be given in her name to Faith Lutheran Church or Beloit Regional Hospice.

Verlon D. 'RED' Curry, 72, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, February 2, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 29, 1931 in Decatur County, Tennessee, the son of Walter and Bessie Kennedy Curry. Red was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Sally Marie Day on October 3, 1953 in Rockton, IL.

Red was employed by General Motors in Janesville, WI, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Local UAW 95. Red enjoyed playing gin with his friends at the Carom Room and the Krueger Golf Course. He also loved working on cars.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Sally of Beloit, WI; five children, Marie (Steve) Rudolph of North Carolina, Brenda Schaefer of Janesville, WI, Diane (Ed) Ellenberger of Missouri, Harry (Wendi) Curry of Beloit, WI and Dennis (Rachel) Curry of Georgia; eight grandchildren, Angela Torres, Tommy Rudolph, Collin O'Donnell, Katie, Kristy, and Travis Ellenberger, Amanda and Jacob Curry; three great grandchildren, Alexander and Andrew Torres and one soon to be born; sister-in-law, Kathryn Thorson of Beloit, WI; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bernie and Mary Poff of Beloit, WI; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew who was like a brother, Travis Curry of Tennessee.

The family would like to show their appreciation by acknowledging the great care of Dr. Leo and Dr. Olszewski, the royal treatment given by the nurses of the Critical Care U nit and the Dialysis center, especially Bonnie.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Carmen, Hubert, Jess, Otean and Robert Lewis, sister, Paris and granddaughter, Linda Marie Schaefer.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Lewis Moon from Redeemer Evangelical Covenant Church officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
