His family farmsteaded the property in 1848 and David's immediate family farmed until the mid 1930s and it remained in the family until the 1970s. Being the oldest son meant that he was first in line to work the farm as he grew up. He graduated from Beloit High School in 1935. However, the depression sent him in search of a job and he went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps off and on in January of 1937 working on projects in the southern Wisconsin area until he was finally released in June of 1941. As World War II heated up, he was inducted into the army in February 1942. He was sent to Europe as a 'Truck Driver Heavy' where he drove trucks delivering supplies throughout the theater 'in all types of weather, on good and bad roads, made emergency repairs on vehicles being driven and road repairs.' After the war he, like many veterans took advantage of the G. I. Bill to enroll in Beloit College. He loved Beloit College where he majored in biology forming a deep respect for Professor Carl Welty. He maintained his contacts over the years and enjoyed his affiliation after retirement.

On graduating from Beloit College in 1950 he enrolled in the University of Missouri as a wild life biology graduate student. During this time, he dated the beautiful and elegant Anita Birr. He fell in love with her and they were married on September 25, 1951in Oshkosh at Peace Lutheran Church. They remained devoted to each other until her death in 1996.

After graduation, they moved to Seney Wild Life Refuge in the northern peninsula of Michigan where he started as assistant manager. This was a job that he loved and continued wild life management for the rest of his professional life. He became manager of the Audubon Refuge in Garrison North Dakota remaining there until his retirement from the National Fish and Wildlife Agency in the mid 1970s.

They had one child, Peter who died shortly after birth.

David and Anita had found there dream home back in Wisconsin on Spute lake near Rice Lake Wisconsin. David spent their years there improving his land modeling his efforts on Aldo Leopold's land ethic as exemplified in the Sand County Almanac. Eventually their failing health necessitated a move to Beloit where more services were available. They had come full circle and they bought a vacant lot within a mile of the McGlauchlin Farm and adjacent to the little one room school where he and most of his siblings went under the ferocious eye of Maude Crippen.
