Leona E. Mitchell, 85, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 in Sun Valley West, Beloit, WI.

She was born on March 17, 1919 in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Elmer and Marie Hemseth Weidman. Leona was a graduate of Waterloo High School in Iowa. She married Frank M. Mitchell on September 12, 1936 in Iowa.

Survivors include her children, Carolynn Roberts of Stillman Valley, IL, Ruth Taaffe of Beloit, WI, and Linda (Michael) Slatter of Beloit, WI; grandchildren, Tracy Wagner, Melissa Mitchell both of Milwaukee, WI, Timothy (Vonnie) Roberts, Christopher Roberts both of Stillman Valley, IL, Andrew (Karen) Roberts of Chicago, IL, Michael Aston of Beloit, WI, Matthew (Stephanie) Aston of West Bend, WI, David (Amy) Taaffe of Evansville, WI, John Semrau Jr. of Beloit, WI, Allison Semrau of Beloit, WI and Todd Slatter of Chicago, WI; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Wagner of Minnesota and Verna Wagner of Iowa; two brothers, Norman Weidman and Delbert Weidman both of Iowa.

She was predeceased by her parents, son, James M. Mitchell, son-in-law, Delbert W. Roberts, brother, Cecil Weidman and a sister, Florence Weidman.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2005 in Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. Entombment will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until the time of services Friday in the funeral home.

Donald W. Marshall, 71, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer for three years.

A lifelong resident of Beloit he was born on February 22, 1933 the son of Fred and Bessie Marshall. Donald attended Beloit Memorial High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He married Cecilia A. GeRue on March 14, 1953 in the Old Stone Church, Rockton, IL.

Donald was employed by Beloit Corporation, Kerry Inc. and North American Tool, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the South Beloit American Legion and the Beloit Eagles Club.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia of Beloit, WI; one daughter, Stephanie (James) Stevens of Beloit, WI; three grandchildren, Charlie Cecilia 'C.C.' Marshall-Stevens, Harley Rae Stevens and Kyle Russell Kreyer; one brother, Robert (Shirley) Marshall of Florida; three sisters, Frannie (her companion, George) Lamb of Beloit, WI, Marie (Andy) Erickson of Beloit, WI and Nana Hogan of Wisconsin; brother-in-law, John GeRue Jr. of Rockton, IL; sisters-in-law, Mary (Dave) Ferguson, Eva (her companion, Roger) Andrews both of Beloit, WI and Germaine (Don) Niemeier of Brodhead, WI; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Fred (Donna) Marshall, Chuck Stephens, and Ed Thrasher, sisters, Grace Dowell, Helen (Vernon) Whitledge and Betty (Al) Allen; sister-in-law, Audrey (John) Hoekman, brother-in-laws, Andrew and Ray Lamb.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend James Adomeit officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL with Military Rites. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home and from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Saturday in the funeral home.

Gary Maxedon, 70, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, December 13, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 18, 1934 in Beloit, WI, the son of John and Helen Carlson Maxedon. Gary was a graduate of South Beloit High School. He married Patricia Reedy on September 19, 1953 in St. Peter Catholic Church.

Gary was employed by Super Value for 13 years. He loved fishing, gambling and photography. Gary was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; children, Marcy (Paul) Thompson of Fort Atkinson, WI, Thomas (Chol) Maxedon of Colorado Springs, CO, Lori Maxedon of Bell, FL and Kim (Jim) Beirl of Beloit, WI; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one brother, John (Madonna) Maxedon of Eureka Springs, AR.

He was predeceased by his parents and in-laws.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 17, 2004 in St. Jude Catholic Church with Fr. Steve Kortendick officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

Delores H. Untz Moake, 68, of Roscoe, IL died Thursday, December 2, 2004 in her home in Roscoe, IL.

She was born December 6, 1935 in West Brooklyn, IL the daughter of Christian J. and Fanny M. Yocum Untz. Delores graduated from Madonna High School in Aurora IL. She married Richard L. Moake on February 27, 1954 in Aurora, IL.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time playing games with the grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Richard; children, Robert W. (Lois) Moake of South Beloit, IL, William Moake of South Beloit, IL, Richard Moake Jr. of Machesney Park, IL, Patricia (Greg) Young of Rockton, IL; grandchildren, Heather (Robert) Nieves of Rockford, IL, Matthew Hale of Freeport, IL, Ashley Moake of South Beloit, IL, Zachary Young of Rockton, IL, Bradley Young of Rockton, IL; great grandchildren, Savannah Nieves of Rockford, IL, Payton Nieves of Rockford, IL; sisters, Evelyn (James) Murrell of Davenport, IA, Betty Kandell of Aurora, IL, Beverly (Don) Cumings of Grand Rapids, MI; brother, Raymond (Dorothy) Untz of Sun Lakes, AZ and many nieces and nephews,

She was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 620 Blackhawk Blvd, South Beloit, IL with Father Jerome Koutnik officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL Visitation will be Monday 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI 53511.

Memorial may be given in her name to Northern IL Hospice Association or St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Dorothy Munoz, 79, formerly of Beloit, WI, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2004 in Bradenton, FL.

She was born September 19, 1925 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Maurice and Goldie A. Heiman Schwellenbach. Dorothy married Nick Munoz on April 27, 1945 in Beloit, WI. He predeceased her on March 25, 1983.

Survivors include her four children, Carol (Jack) Lease of Canton, SD, Robert (Lora) Munoz of Terre Haute, IN, Joseph (Diane) Munoz of Perry, IA and Steve (Kim) Munoz of Des Moines, IA; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph (Ruth) Schwellenbach and Jim (Darlene) Schwellenbach; longtime friend and companion, Ed Gayso and many nieces and nephews.

You will be missed dearly and remembered always. Your family.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2004 in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Thabor Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with a Scripture service at 5:00 p.m.

Maxine J. Mahlum, 81, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, October 25, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident.

She was born on September 6, 1923 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Peterson) Mendenhall. Maxine was a 1942 graduate of Beloit High School. She married Warren H. Mahlum on May 15, 1943 in Washington, D.C. He predeceased her on December 5, 1995.

Maxine was employed by E.L. Chester Company and Beloit Corporation. She was a member of the Beloit Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Ostomy Club, Y.M.C.A. in Janesville, the Intermediate Women's Club and just recently joined the Red Hat Society. Maxine was a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children, Luanne Kay (Roger) Hjelle of La Crosse, WI and Philip Lance (Pamela) Mahlum of Fairfax, VA; four grandchildren, Alan (Michelle) Hjelle of Algona, IA, Kurt (Lynn) Hjelle of Oswego, IL, Anissa (Joshua) Williams of Owatonna, MN and Bradley Mahlum of Clearwater, FL; six great grandchildren, Bo Jordan and Emma Faith Hjelle of Algona, IA, Madeline Mae and Gavin John Hjelle of Oswego, IL, Kinzie Kay and Brayden Joshua Williams of Owatonna, MN; one brother, Robert Mendenhall of Texas; brother-in-law, Rollie (Marge) Mahlum of Beloit, WI; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, brother, Donald, sister, Marion and an infant sister, Dorothy.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2004 in the Calvary Lutheran Church with the Reverend Kurt Handrich and Reverend Roger Hjelle officiating. Burial will be in Luther Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

Memorials may be given in her name to Calvary Lutheran Church or Hospice Care Inc. in Janesville, WI.

George Trafford Mertes, 81, of Beloit, WI, passed away on October 25, 2004 at the Rock Haven Nursing Home after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

He was born on September 1, 1923 in Superior, WI, the son of Phillip T. and Edna M. Davis Mertes. George was a graduate of Superior Central High School, class of 1941. He was a talented artist and won a special certificate of recognition, signed by Norman Rockwell, for a painting entered into a national competition, titled 'What My Community Contributes to the Nation.'

George entered the service in 1943 as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps. After his discharge, he worked as a civilian employee of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He returned and studied Mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin. While in college, he worked during the summers for the State Highway Commission as a surveyor and inspector. It was during this time that he met the young lady who became his wife. George married Mary E. Messich on April 15, 1950 in the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Glidden, WI.

George and Mary settled in Beloit, WI, where they raised five children. He was employed by Beloit Corporation, Fairbanks Morse, and Chrysler Corporation until his retirement in 1985. George enjoyed a variety of hobbies and was especially fond of model airplanes, cars and trains and assembled an extensive collection over the years. He was very proud of a boat design he patented as a young man. His inquisitive nature and willingness to tackle anything led to many unique home remodeling and automotive projects. He was always searching out directions and instructions and taught his children that there wasn't any project that you couldn't try yourself with a little effort and ingenuity. George leaves a legacy to his children and grandchildren of a life led with an insatiable curiosity about the world around him and unflagging determination to involve himself in his projects and community issues. He was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church, the E.A.A., Pro-Life Wisconsin and the American Legion Post #247 of Glidden, WI.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; four sons and a daughter, Michael G. (Shirley) Mertes, Patrick T. (Marie) Mertes, Stephen J. (Jeri) Mertes, Daniel R. (Pamela) Mertes and Mary Kay (Daniel) Richardson; 10 grandchildren, Tyler, Mariah, James, Kyle, Lysanne, Bryce and Elizabeth Mertes, William, Margaret and Mitchell Richardson; one sister, Marcella Johnson; one aunt, Vera Conners both of Minneapolis, MN; brother-in-law, Joseph Messich of Glidden, WI.

The family would like to thank the incredible staff and nurses at Rock Haven Nursing Home in Janesville whose loving care and concern for George was a great source of comfort to us.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Robert and a grandson, Marc.

Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2004 in St. Jude Catholic Church. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. in the church with Fr. Steve Kortendick officiating. Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2004 in the Most Precious Blood Catholic Cemetery, Glidden, WI. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Thomas George McKie, 80, of Beloit, WI, died Saturday, October 16, 2004 in Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center.

He was born December 14, 1923 in Marquette, Michigan, the son of Leonard and Stella (McCullough) McKie. Thomas married Mary J. Beckman on October 5, 1944 in Marquette, MI.

Tom began his mechanical engineering education in 1941, enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in World War II as an SB2C Dive Bomber Pilot, and returned to Michigan Technological University after completing his military service in 1945 to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation in 1947 he joined the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. In 1953 he joined Beloit Corporation in their engineering division and enjoyed a thirty three year career with the company. Tom held many positions at Beloit Corporation including Chief Engineer, Vice President of Engineering, General Sales Manager, General Manager of Paper Machinery Division (PMD), and Group Vice President of PMD and Foundry. In 1984 he was named President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), a position he held until his retirement in 1986. Tom holds ten patents related to the design of paper machines, is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Wisconsin, and has conducted business in nineteen countries. Tom is a past member of the Michigan Technological University Forest Research Board; former board chairman of Beloit Sorel Canada, Beloit Italia, Beloit Brazil, Beloit Zurich, and Beloit Wamsley; and a former board member of the Sandusky Foundry (Ohio). He is currently a Golden M member of the Michigan Technological University Alumni Association, a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, a member of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church serving as a deacon and as a trustee. Tom also was on the Beloit Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; sons, Newell Thomas (Kathleen) McKie of Trophy Club, TX, Richard Alan (Janice) McKie of Springfield, MO; daughter, Ruth Elizabeth (Paul) Meese of Mission Viejo, CA; grandchildren, Thomas John (Brooke) McKie of Dallas, TX, Michael Joseph McKie of the University of TX, Austin, Anna (Matthew) Jones of St. Charles, MO, Alex (Andrea) McKie of Stevenson Ranch, CA, Trevor (Karen) McKie of St. Louis, MO, Keelin Meese of Mission Viejo, CA, and Ryan Meese of Mission Viejo, CA; great grandchildren, Zachary, Tucker, MacKenzie, and Tanner Jones of St. Charles, MO; cousin, Richard Nelson of Duluth, MN.

He was predeceased by his parents, and brother, James.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at the First Congregational Church with the Reverend Shawn Stapleton officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday in the church. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the First Congregational Church of Beloit, WI or the American Heart Association.
