Lida Jane Richardson, 82, of Beloit, WI, died at home with her family on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 following a brief illness with cancer.

She was born July 22, 1922 in Richland Center, WI, the daughter of Ruth Lumm. Lida worked at McNeany’s Department Store, she also worked in the respiratory therapy department at Caravilla Nursing Home and in the medical records at Beloit Convalescent Center and Carlyle. After retiring from Carlyle, Lida spent 15 years volunteering at Beloit Memorial Hospital in the gift shop. She enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas with her husband Don. Gambling was one of her favorite pastimes as well as shopping and dining out with their dear friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Donald Richardson; one daughter, Sandy (Mick) Herold of Beloit, WI; one son, Mark Richardson of Janesville, WI; five grandchildren, Jeff (Cheryl) Herold of Madison, WI, Deb (Richard) Ward of Mitchell, IN, Lisa (Paul) Balderston of Ft. Myers, FL, Michelle Richardson of Janesville, WI and Stephen (Crystal) Richardson of Beloit, WI; nine great grandchildren, Nick, Chris, Amanda, Matthew, Kimberly, Dakota, Isaiah, Kaitlyn and Mikaela (Mia).

She will be dearly missed by all.

Lida was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Lumm and her infant sister, Rosemary Havens.

The family is sincerely thankful for the loving and caring individuals of Beloit Regional Hospice that have touched our hearts during this difficult time.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2005 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Jim Rowlette officiating. Burial will be in Shopiere Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until the time of services Monday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to Beloit Regional Hospice.

Donelle T. Ruston, 27, of Beloit, WI, passed away on October 11, 2004.

He was born on April 13, 1977 in Beloit, WI, the son of Darla Baptist Barnes and Willie Pryor. Donelle was a 1995 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. Donelle seemed to keep everyone laughing and loved to work. He was currently employed at Baker’s Manufacturer.

Survivors include his children, Donelle Ruston Jr., Par’ Shay Pinson and Dai’ yon Fulrath all of Beloit, WI; his parents, Darla Barnes and Willie Pryor both of Beloit, WI; his maternal grandmother, Lois Strothman of Beloit, WI; four sisters, Lorranda Barnes, Yolonda Barnes and Katrina Barnes all of Beloit, WI, and Alexandria (Frank) Teleso of Loves Park, IL; six brothers, Anthony Pryor of Providence, Canada, Merle Pryor of Homestead, FL, Shawn Pryor of Loves Park, IL, Philip Carter, Demetrius Carter and Alex Carter all of Madison, WI; one special brother, Frenchon Johnson of Beloit, WI; Donelle was also loved by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews on both sides of the families and many close friends.

Donelle is loved and will be missed by many.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, James C. Dumas and Lee Virgie Dumas, maternal grandfather, Robert Strothman, one aunt, Alice M. Dumas and one uncle, James C. Dumas Jr.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2004 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Pastor Robert Pryor officiating. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Friday in the funeral home.

Helen M. Roney, 87, of Beloit, WI, died Thursday, September 2, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 21, 1917 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of John and Cecil Churchill Laird. Helen attended Beloit Catholic High School. She married Lexie “Red” Roney on June 18, 1949 in Dubuque, IA. He predeceased her on January 11, 1998. Helen was employed by Freeman Shoe Company, retiring in 1979.

Survivors include her children, Harold (Kay) Pile Jr. of Zepher Hills, FL, Arlene (Harold) Stafford and John Pile both of South Beloit, IL; 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; son-in-law, Bill Redman of Belvidere, IL.

She was predeceased by her parents, first husband, Harold Pile Sr.; daughter, Virginia Redman and step brother, Erv Fonda.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Pastor Norman Starks officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Arlin W. “Arnie” Rayner, 73, of Beloit, WI, died Saturday, August 21, 2004 in his home in the arms of his loving wife. He had bravely battled cancer for 19 months.

He was born January 19, 1931 near North Clayton in Crawford County to Ernest and Catherine (Wines) Rayner. He married Bonnie Hansen whom he had met on a blind date, December 16, 1950 at the North Clayton Methodist Church. They moved to Beloit December 26, 1950 and had resided there ever since. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Arlin worked at Beloit Foundry and Beloit Corporation for 42 ½ years, retiring in June of 1993. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1952 until October of 1953 serving in the Korean conflict for 13 months as a machine gun specialist in the infantry. He was promoted by the battlefield commissions to the final rank of Sgt. 1st Class. Arlin was required to be in the inactive reserve until February of 1960 when he was officially discharged. While in Korea, he was involved in the battle of Pork Chop Hill, Heart Break Ridge, Punchbowl, Iron Triangle and at Inchon.

Arlin is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Bonnie; two daughters, Kristine (James) Kauppinen and their daughter, Erin of Sun Prairie, WI; Kathleen (Michael) Palazzolo and their children, Jonathon and Emily of Beloit, WI; one son, Robert (Rebecca) and their daughter, Catie of Plano, TX; also surviving are three great grandchildren, Hailey, Logain and Landon Palazzolo all of Beloit, WI; three brothers and three sisters, Dale of San Antonio, TX, Lawrence (Velma) of Beloit, WI, Wayne (Karen) of Soldiers Grove, Doris Montgomery of Beloit, WI, Iva (Walter) Suter of West Allis, WI and Marie Garber of Viroqua, WI; three brothers-in-law, Robert (Kay) Hansen of Beloit, WI, Roger (Laana) Hansen of Beloit, WI and Steve (Elaine) Hansen of Lone Rock, WI; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was predeceased by parents, Ernest and Catherine, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Emil and Fern Hansen, brothers-in-law, Philip Montgomery and William Garber, a sister-in-law, Sally Rayner and an infant brother.

Arlin was a member of the Beloit Moose club, former member of the Eagles Aerie, and a life member of the V.F.W. Post # 2306. He had worked many hours helping with corn boils and other activities at the V.F.W. He was a member of the VFW bowling league for more than 39 years and also bowled in the Bowl Aire Majors Senior league for many years. He and partner Quint Schultz won State Senior tournament doubles in 1999. Arlin was an avid hunter and fisherman having made many trips to Montana and Colorado to hunt elk, antelope and mule deer. He began hunting when he was 16 and never missed a year except 1952 when he was in Korea and this last year because of his illness.

He enjoyed more than 40 years of camping with his family and friends at Sweet Minnehaha near Brodhead and Castle Rock in Adams County. He was an avid Packer, Brewer and Badger fan. He was always a neighborhood helper, taking time to assist neighbors and friends with yard work, building projects and gardening. After Bonnie retired in 1995, they spent their winters in Mission, Texas until 2003 when Arlin became ill. They spent many hours playing cards with their friends and landlords, Bill and Delores Lorenz in Mission.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004 in the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jo Bierer officiating and Wayne Rayner co- officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI and from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Thursday in the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Methodist Church in Beloit and Beloit Regional Hospice. There are not enough words to thank the nurses and other personnel from Beloit Hospice for their care and caring.

Lillian E. Rahorn, 100, of Janesville, WI, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 in Huntington Memory Care, Janesville, WI.

She was born on April 11, 1904 in Orangeville, IL, the daughter of Neal and Rose Gerber Shippy. Lillian married Raymond R. Rahorn on November 27, 1926 in Rockford, IL. He predeceased her on January 23, 1994.

Lillian was employed by Freeman Shoe Company and Beloit College, retiring in 1965. She was a member of Beloit Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the First Lutheran Church in Janesville, WI. Lillian was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beloit, WI. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, flowers, bicycling and being with her family.

Survivors include her children, Lyle (Bernice) Rahorn of Gilbert, AZ, Ronald (Mary) Rahorn of Belvidere, IL and Gloria (Ted) Norder of Janesville, WI; grandchildren, Kathy (Bill) Borders, Cindy (Dennis) Mindnich, Ronald (Heather) Rahorn, Mark (Sheila) Rahorn, Brian (Wendy) Rahorn, Richard (Veronica) Rahorn, Becky (Ron) Meadors, Renee (Kip) Gustafson and Ted (Carol) Norder Jr.; 33 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; two sisters, Iris Shippy of Beloit, WI and Nell Holste of Rock City, IL; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Lyle Shippy, Leland Shippy, Glen Shippy and Wayne Shippy; sisters, Florence Meyers, Josephine Blackmore, Roslyn Fehr, Dorothy Meinert, and Viola Cuiffo, two granddaughters, Lynn Manning and Penny Norder Wampole.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004 in the First Lutheran Church, 612 N. Randall Avenue, Janesville, WI. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Monday in the church.

Memorials may be given in her name to First Lutheran Church or Mercy Assisted Care Hospice.

Doris E. Rhodes, 94, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, July 11, 2004 at Pioneer Court.

She was born on January 25, 1910 in Arena WI, the daughter of T. Harry and Zella B. (Hodgson) Arthur. Doris married Joseph W. Rhodes on August 1, 1936 in Dodgeville, WI Methodist Church. He predeceased her on June 15, 2004.

After growing up and graduating from Dodgeville High School, she received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1932. She was a member of the Professional Music Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota and the Social Sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. She taught both English and Music in the Beloit High School in 1935 to 1936. Later she was involved with Rock County rural music supervision and worked as an assistant to the children’s librarian in the Beloit Public Library, retiring in 1971. Her strong love of music lead her to teach piano lessons over a six year period, with as many as 40 students at one time.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 63 years. Besides being active, both as a leader and a teacher, in the various Sunday school programs, she sang for many years in the chancel choir. Doris belonged to the United Methodist Women, receiving a special service recognition life membership for her many contributions, including leadership of the Memorial Wills and Music committees. She was a life member of Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.). She also belonged to the UMW Leah Circle, Treble Clef, the Garden Lover’s Club, Fine Art’s Club, Beloit Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a life member of Friends of the Beloit Public Library and the Beloit Area Retired Educators Association (BAREA). In addition to being a loving wife and mother, her love and sharing of music and the helping of others were her special gifts in life.

Survivors include his two sons, Thomas and Arthur. Son, Thomas and wife Keri reside in San Marcos, TX. Their children include a daughter, Kathleen, with husband Brian Boner of Salt Lake City, UT; a son, Timothy, with wife Robin and sons Grant and Jarett and daughter Brooke of Charlotte, NC ; and a son, Todd, with wife Sarah and daughters Michelle, Emily and Rebecca of Hickory, NC ; Son, Arthur and wife Laurie reside in Hudson, FL. Their children include a son, Arthur Jr. (Joe), of Cedar Rapids, IA; and a daughter, Suzanne Graff and son Madison of Cedar Rapids, IA.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Glenn Arthur of Appleton, WI and Robert Arthur of Dodgeville, WI.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2004 in the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jo Bierer officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Friday in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in her name to First United Methodist Church Youth Scholarship Program.

Gloria Richards, 38, of Westfield, WI, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 in Divine Savior Hospital, Portage, WI.

She was born December 15, 1965 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Ward E. and Alice J. Tuttle Richards Sr. Gloria was employed by Rock County Nursing Home as a nurse’s aid. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved animals, riding motorcycles, her horse Farrel and going to rummage sales.

Survivors include her son, Justin Paul of Beloit, WI; parents, Ward and Alice Richards of Westfield, WI; two brothers, William Richards of Westfield, WI and David (Shellie) Richards of Janesville, WI; two sisters, Carol (Tom) Perkins and Sarah (Dale) Vance both of Janesville, WI; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Bailey.

She was predeceased by her brother, Ward Jr., maternal and paternal grandparents and a niece, Danyelle Richards.

Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Jim Rowlette officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services Saturday in the funeral home.

Joseph W. Rhodes, 98, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 in Pioneer Court.

He was born on June 30, 1905, on a farm in Dodge County, WI. He was the son of William and Louise (Borkenhagen) Rhodes. He married Doris Elizabeth Arthur on August 1, 1936, in Dodgeville, WI.

As an eighth grade rural school graduate, he graduated from Reeseville High School in 1922. After graduation from Milwaukee State Teacher’s College (UW-Milwaukee) in 1926, he served as Principal of the State Graded School in Merton, WI from 1926-30. He received his PhM (Master of Philosophy) degree from UW-Madison in 1932. In 1932, he joined the Beloit High School staff as Chairman of the Science Department. He initiated and organized a teacher oriented curriculum program. As a co-sponsor, he initiated a college senior student teaching program for Beloit College and UW-Whitewater. In 1941-42, he served as a summer school science staff member at UW-Stevens Point. From 1942-46, he was a member of the teaching staff of Iowa State Teacher’s College (University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, IA, where he also supervised the college senior student teaching program.

He returned to Beloit as Assistant Superintendent of Schools with administrative responsibilities for personnel and curriculum from 1946-71. He was President and District Lieutenant Governor of the Beloit Noon Kiwanis Club and received the Legion of Honor award for 40 years of membership and service, including 17 years of perfect attendance. As club president, on November 12, 1966, Kiwanis sponsored the first Aunt Jemima Pancake Day, a first for the Beloit-Southern Wisconsin area. He recently became a member of the Stateline Golden Club. As project chairman of the Men’s Garden Club, he organized and sponsored the arboretum located in the East Grand Avenue Mechanics Green Park. The Joseph W. Rhodes Arboretum was dedicated February 20, 1995.

His 63-year membership in the First United Methodist Church of Beloit included responsibilities as Sunday School Superintendent as teacher, youth leader, member of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees, lay leader and church historian. He served as corporate and Trustee of the Beloit Savings Bank (Blackhawk State Bank). He held a 70-year membership in the Masonic Lodge, including membership in the Beloit Masonic Bodies and the Madison Consistory. He served as the first President of the reorganized Beloit Education Association in 1954. He was a member of the Beloit Senior Citizens Advisory Commission, president of the Beloit Retired Teacher’s Association, president and curator of the Beloit Historical Society (1971-83), life member of Friends of Beloit Public Library, Board of Trustees of the Beloit Memorial Hospital and a member of the Beloit Association of Commerce, receiving the Caleb Blodgett Award in 1978 and the Beloit Booster Award in 1970. He sponsored definitive publications, including a history of Morning Star Lodge #10 F. &A.M. in 1972, “Sparks from the Flaming Wheel” in 1984, a contemporary history of Beloit, and a history of the First United Methodist Church of Beloit in 1990.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Doris, and two sons, Thomas and Arthur. Son, Thomas and wife Keri reside in Mt. Pleasant, UT. Their children include a daughter, Kathleen, with husband Brian Boner of Salt Lake City, UT; a son, Timothy, with wife Robin and sons Grant and Jarett and daughter Brooke of Charlotte, NC ; and a son, Todd, with wife Sarah and daughters Michelle, Emily and Rebecca of Hickory, NC ; Son, Arthur and wife Laurie reside in Hudson, FL. Their children include a son, Arthur Jr. (Joe), of Cedar Rapids, IA; and a daughter, Suzanne Graff and son Madison of Cedar Rapids, IA.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Sidney, and sister, Ethel Magnusen.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004 in First United Methodist Church, Beloit, with the Reverend Jim Rowlette officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Friday in the church.

Memorials may be given in his name to First United Methodist Church Youth Scholarship Program or Beloit Regional Hospice.
