Verbena “Bea” Steinhagen, 84, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born on December 19, 1919 in Avon, SD, the daughter of Henry and Martha Oorlog Johnson. Verbena married Norval Steinhagen on January 5, 1939 in Maquoketa, IA. He predeceased her on April 30, 1992.

Verbena was employed by Aldrich Junior High School as a cook, retiring in 1975. She then was a homemaker. Verbena was a member of Second Congregational Church. She was a past board member of missions and the Rebecca Lodge #164. She was a volunteer at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her children, Gary (Mary) Steinhagen and Gloria (Robert) Schuler both of Beloit, WI; grandchildren, Brian Steinhagen, Lisa Steinhagen and Brenda (Brian) Jensen; one great grandchild, Riley Jensen; four sisters, Mabel Kielman of Wildwood, FL, Alma Gassman of Freeport, IL, Mardell Hille of Apache Junction, AZ and Viola Burma of Forreston, IL; sister-in-law, Mary Johnson of Shannon, IL; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, daughter, Carol Ann Steinhagen, four sisters, Ella Pudwill, Henrietta Pudwill, Dorothy Kuhn and Minnie Earnest; five brothers, Hank, George, Ed, Jack and Albert Johnson

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 1, 2004 in the Second Congregational Church, 657 Bluff Street, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Douglas Gray officiating and the Reverend Gene VanGalder co-officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Friday in the church.

Memorials may be given in her name to Second Congregational Church or Beloit Regional Hospice.

Shirley Scoviak, 77, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004 in Meadow Park Health Care Center, Clinton, WI.

She was born August 29, 1927 in Janesville, WI, the daughter of John Henry and Laura Anna Sandstrom Minnick. Shirley was a graduate of Janesville High School. She married John G. Scoviak in May of 1949 in Janesville, WI. He predeceased her in 1998. Shirley was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Alter Society. She was a volunteer at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Scoviak-Lerner of Bloomington, IN; one granddaughter, Oriana Lerner; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, three sisters, Helen I. Hansen, Evelyn H. Dewick and Betty M. Kurz; five brothers, Charles H. Minnick, Frank A. Minnick, Harold J. Minnick, Lester L. Minnick and Stewart S. Minnick.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 17, 2004 in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Thabor Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given in her name to Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Helen Vivian Swinehart, 96, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, September 8, 2004 in Sun Valley West, Beloit, WI.

She was born June 6, 1908 in Avoca, WI, the daughter of Sam Watson and Emma Augusta (Putz) Swinehart. Helen was employed by the Wisconsin Telephone Company for 37 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Wisconsin Telephone Company Pioneer Club and Second Congregational Church.

Survivors include her brother, Sam Fredrick Swinehart of Beloit, WI; sister, Margaret Piccione of Beloit, WI; scores of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, five brothers, Clifford, Kenneth, James, Osmond and Logan Swinehart, five sisters, Florence Knutson, Irma Glavin, Edith Swinehart, Maxine Brown and Doris Spoor.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 12, 2004 with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 13, 2004 in the Second Congregational Church, 657 Bluff Street, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Douglas Gray officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Memories Mausoleum, Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. .

Memorials may be given in her name to Beloit Regional Hospice.

Randy Gerald Smith IV, infant son of Randy Smith III and Stacy Howe was silently born on Thursday, September 2, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Randy is survived by his parents, of Beloit, WI; maternal grandparents Anne Abbott and Kip Howe of Racine, WI; paternal grandmother, Sally Beinema Warren of Beloit, WI; maternal great grandparents, Theodore Hoffmann of Racine, WI, Barbara Brown of Kansas and Jeanette Marcis of Racine, WI; Paternal great grandfather, James Beinema Sr. of Janesville, WI; maternal great great grandmother, Della Howe of Racine, WI; aunts, Alyssa , Samantha, and Christein (Jamie) Sertzel; cousins, Coral and Carmon Sertzel; several great and great great aunts and uncles; many close friends of the family.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Randy Gerald Smith; maternal great great grandfather, Clifford Howe, Paternal great grandmother, Dolores Beinema; uncle, Randy Gerald Smith II; and a great uncle, Barry Fehlberg.

Private services will be held. Burial will be in Turtleville Cemetery. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Marie (Jebauer) Skogen, 76, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, August 16, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born January 19, 1929 in Sharon, WI, the daughter of David and Sophia Kunz Jebauer. Marie was a 1945 graduate of Beloit High School, where she was very active in the orchestra and band. She married Gilman A. Skogen on July 2, 1949 in Beloit, WI.

Marie worked from 1959 to 1970 at Adam Korn Kurls and from 1970 to 1989 at Fairbanks Morse as a Receiving Inspector. She was an active member of the New Apostolic Church, where she enjoyed belonging to the choir. Marie was a volunteer at the Grinnell Hall Senior Center.

Survivors include her loving husband, Gilman of 55 years; her daughters, Judy Nupnau and Jean (Steve) Johnson; her son, Joel (Janet) Skogen; and her six grandchildren, Jennifer Nupnau, Joann Nupnau, Paul Skogen, Heather Skogen, Erick (Otis) Johnson and Jessica Johnson.

She was predeceased by her parents, son, Jerald, brother, David and son-in-law Gerald.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 2004 at the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI 53511, with Reverend Robert Guderian and Reverend Ed Nupnau, from the New Apostolic Church officiating. There will be a private family burial at East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, August 20, 2004 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to The New Apostolic Church at 516 W. Grand Ave, Beloit, WI 53511.

Orpha Joanne Stocker, 73, of Beloit, WI, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 12, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born February 3, 1931 in Plymouth Township, WI, the daughter of Gustav and Orpha Hanson Mahlum. Joanne married Herbert Stocker on June 7, 1947 in Dubuque, IA. He predeceased her on July 12, 1980.

Joanne was employed by McCleary Industries in South Beloit, IL, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Luther Valley Church. Joanne was a wonderful cook. She was a Green Bay Packer, NASCAR and golf fan.

Survivors include her children, Nancy (Richard) Terwilliger, Dennis “Mike” (Linda) Stocker all of Beloit, WI and Danny “Rich” (Louise) Stocker of Roscoe, IL; grandchildren, Michael (Michelle) Terwilliger of Kewaskum, WI, Gregory (Kelly) Terwilliger, Kirsten (Darrell) Vance, and Shannon Stocker all of Beloit, WI; great grandchildren, Emma Rose Terwilliger of Kewaskum, WI, Brandon Terwilliger, Ashley Stocker and Leroy Stocker all of Beloit, WI; three sisters, Doris (Chuck) Winchester of Hebron, IL, Rosie (Russ) Drevdahl of Beloit, WI and Wanda (Pete Nuciforo) Mahlum of Beloit, WI; two brothers, Douglas (Pat) Mahlum of Beloit, WI and Royal (Sue) Mahlum of Shirland, IL; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Joanne was a great mom, grandma and great grandma and will be missed by all.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers Eugene Mahlum and Gerald Mahlum, two sisters, Betty Bentz and Evelyn Meier.

Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2004 in Luther Valley Church with Pastor Eric Hoehn from Hope Evangelical officiating. Burial will be in Luther Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Monday in the church. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates 2355 Cranston Road Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

Howard James Schlichting, 73, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, August 8, 2004 in his home.

He was born June 10, 1931 in Iowa City, IA the son of Arnold and Florence Keller Schlichting. Howard served in the United States Air Force from 1949 until 1950. He married Audrey Bendickson on February 16, 1950 in Beloit, WI.

Howard worked as a Fire Fighter for the City of Beloit for 25 years until his retirement in 1986. He belonged to the Fire Fighters Union Local 583, the National Fire Fighters Association and the State Retired Fire Fighters Association. Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, bicycling and his motorcycle. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Survivors include his loving wife, Audrey of 54 years; his son, Larry (Christine) Schlichting of Beloit, WI; his daughters, Kandi (Jim) Schmoldt of Beloit, WI, and Cheryl (Greg) Tierney of Beloit, WI; seven grandchildren, Ben Schlichting of Madison, WI, Brady Schlichting of Vail, CO, Captain Steven (Anna) Schmoldt, D.D.S. of Biloxi, MS, Christine Schmoldt of Beloit, WI, Zachary, Hannah and Natalie Tierney of Beloit, WI; step great granddaughter, Mya Behling; sister-in-law, Beverly Palmer of Oregon, WI; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, an infant son, Gary Steven Schlichting, brother-in-law Don Bendickson, two sisters-in laws, Doris Divine and Marion Bendickson.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 in the Calvary Lutheran Church with the Reverend Kurt Handrich officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

Memorials will be established in his name to the Howard Schlichting Fire Fighter Educational Scholarship Fund.

JAMES SCHULTZ

On this day Saturday, August 7, 2004 the Heavens opened up to welcome James W. “Jim” Schultz, 57, of Beloit, WI, after an industrial accident in Beloit, WI.

He was born on November 13, 1946 in Beloit, WI, the son of Jesse and Evelyn Schoville Schultz. Jim married Clydene Polzin on January 16, 1965 in Rockton, IL.

Jim was employed by United Industries in Beloit, WI for 24 years. His family meant everything to him and he loved his grandchildren dearly. Jim enjoyed the outdoors and took pride in working on his house and yard. He was a Green Bay Packer fan. Jim attended Judson Baptist Church in Beloit, WI.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Clydene; children, Duane Schultz, Anna Gough and Cindy Wilson all of Beloit, WI; three grandchildren who were his world, Krystal Schultz 13 years of age, Kelsey Schultz 9 years of age and Taylor Wilson 5 years of age; his mother, Evelyn Crall of Beloit, WI; a niece that was like a daughter, Nickole (Mike) Crawford of Edgerton, WI; one brother, Gary (Phyllis) Schultz of Rockton, IL; one sister, Dinah (Bob) Rhodes of Janesville, WI; several nieces and nephews; three very special people in his life, Curt Gough, Skip Wilson and Bill Armato.

He was predeceased by his father, brother, Donny, grandson, Duane Jr. and a nephew, Neil Scott Polzin.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with his son Duane Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday in the funeral home.
