Irene E. Sommers, 85, of Clinton, WI, died Friday, September 26, 2003 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 1, 1917 in Clinton, WI, the daughter of Edwin C. and Letitia M. Dresser. Irene was a 1935 graduate of Clinton High School. She married Edwin R. Sommers on October 23, 1943 in Clinton, WI. He predeceased her on February 10, 1992.

Irene was employed by the Clinton Topper Newspaper, retiring in 1979. She was a member of the Rock County Homemaker’s Club, Turtle Grange, Wisconsin State Grange, Rock Walworth Pomona Grange, Rock County Historical Society, Clinton Historical Society, and the Clinton Women’s Club. Irene was a member of Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church for over 50 years where she was active in the altar guild, church circle, ladies aid and the quilters group. She was a charter member of D.A.R. Betsy Hoyt Chapter in Clinton, WI. She was a docent for the Lincoln Tallman House in Janesville, WI. Irene was active in 4-H as a child and was an adult leader. She loved to farm, garden, sew, entertain and take care of her family.

Survivors include her three children, Lee (Mary Kay) Sommers of Fort Collins, CO, Gary Sommers of Clinton, WI, and Marilyn Sommers of Minneapolis, MN; three grandchildren, Brian Lecklitner of Silverthorne, CO, Kiersten Sommers of Greeley, CO, and Gwen (Daniel) Cabo of LaJolla, CA; three great grandchildren, Michaela Lecklitner, Haleigh Lecklitner and Sophia Cabo; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, one brother, Marston Dresser and one sister, Ardis Boynton.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 29, 2003 in Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church, Popular Grove, IL, with Pastor Tom Groth officiating. Burial will be in Clinton Cemetery, Clinton, WI. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

Memorials may be given in her name to Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church or the Clinton E.M.T.’s

Anne K. Shibley, 84, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, September 14, 2003 in her home.

She was born November 15, 1918 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Anton and Anna Fleck Koller. Anne married Richard W. Shibley on August 18, 1945 in St. George Catholic Church, Chicago, IL.

Anne was employed by a Book Binding Company prior to the war. During the war she was employed by the Chicago War bond Office. She was a member of the Allegro Motor Home Club and the Family Motor Coach Club. Anne enjoyed traveling, camping, playing cards and was an avid reader. She was a member of Our Lady Of The Assumption Catholic Church and was a volunteer for 25 years at the church.

Survivors include her husband, Richard of Beloit, WI; grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Garner of Eldridge, IA, Steven Shibley of Racine, WI, and Richard Shibley of Eugene, OR; daughter-in-law, JoAnn (Byron) Holston of Plain, WI; sister-in-law, Beverly Goddard of Moline, IL; two nephews, Kenneth (Beverly) Koller of Joliet, WI, and Wayne Koller of Vernon Hills, IL; one niece, Cheryl (Larry) Pilarczyk of Orland Park, IL; one cousin, Frank (Betty) Koller of Manitowish Waters, WI.

She was predeceased by her parents and two sons, Robert Wayne Shibley and William Richard Shibley.

Prayer services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 18, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in the Our Lady Of The Assumption Catholic Church, with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Thabor Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Thursday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to Beloit Regional Hospice.

SELMA C. HOLMEN SHAW, 100, of Beloit, WI died Tuesday, September 2, 2003 in Pioneer Court, Beloit, WI.

She was born on September 19, 1902 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Martin and Alma Berg Holmen. Selma married Charles F. Shaw on May 24, 1923 in Beloit, WI. He predeceased her on February 28, 1977. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two nieces, Verdelma (Joe) Broderick of Beloit, WI and Arlene (Leonard Knapp) Knutson of Beloit, WI; nephew, Glen (Mary) Shaw of Beloit, WI; several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by parents, three sisters, Hilda Holmen Horne, Minnie Sheard and Amanda Udell and two brothers.

Funeral Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2003 in the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Beloit, WI, with Reverend Clark Kilgard officating. Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch and Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family.

ALICE A. SCHUTT, 94, of Beloit, WI, died Sunday, August 31, 2003 in Beloit Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born July 16, 1909 in Barron County, WI, the daughter of Otto G. and Celia Leighton Alwin. Alice married Walter Zahn on April 3, 1937 in Rockford, IL. He predeceased her on December 4, 1965. She later married Verne Schutt on May 15, 1971 in Beloit, WI. He predeceased her on September 24, 1982.

Alice was employed by Beloit Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Beloit Graduate Nurses Club, Retired Nurses Club, and Gridley Congregational Church since 1937 where she was active in the women’s fellowship, Naomi Circle and Gridley bible study.

Survivors include her son, Roland (Joyce) Zahn of Morganton, GA; daughter, Sandra (Ronald) Roark of Cincinnati, OH; step daughter, Gwendolyn Fritz of Epworth, IA; ten grandchildren, Kenneth Zahn, James Zahn, Edward Zahn, Kathleen Dessimoz, Todd Davis, Ronald Roark, Roland Roark, Randolph Roark, Phyllis Moser, and Jennifer Cole; 24 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters, Gladys Tashoff of Arkansas, and Mildred Blais of O’Fallon, IL; three half sisters, Bertha Lazinsky, Clara Karpowicz both of Minneapolis, MN, and Grace Smith of Barron, WI.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Harry and Fred, one sister, Belle Signor, and one half sister, Mabel Dugal.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Karen Stubblefield officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to Gridley Congregational Church.

MARTIN “LaVern” SMITH, 75, of Roscoe, IL, died peacefully Saturday, August 30, 2003 in his home surrounded by his family, friends and caregivers.

He was born July 20, 1928 in Clinton, WI, the son of Henry Thomas and Minnie Augustine Schrandt Smith. LaVern married Audrey June Schewe on April 18, 1946 in Maquoketa, IA. She predeceased him on February 28, 1991.

LaVern retired from Barber Coleman in 1988 after more then 25 years of employment. Prior to that he drove truck and later was involved with the construction of I-90 as a heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include his son, Wayne (Kathy) Smith of San Juan Capistrano, CA; one daughter, Wanda Argyle of Caledonia, IL; four grandchildren, Craig Smith of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Cris Smith of Capistrano Beach, CA, Bradley Argyle of Rockford, IL, and Jessica Argyle of Moline, IL; two great grandchildren, Zoe Rain and Kyle; one brother, Richard A. (Darlene) Smith of Minot, ND; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and two special friends, Wilma Wienzierl and David Paris.

He was predeceased by his parents, five brothers, Harold, William, Willard, John, and Kenneth Smith, and one sister, Marion Topp.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. Burial will be in Roscoe Cemetery, Roscoe, IL. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Harlem-Roscoe Ambulance Fund.

CORA JEANETTE SORENSON, 96, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003 in Riverside Terrace, Beloit, WI.

She was born April 3, 1907 in Newark Township, Rock County, WI, the daughter of John and Carrie Hendrickson Heyerdahl. Her mother, Carrie, lived only a few days after Cora’s birth. Weighing only four pounds she was carried around in a shoebox. Doctors said she would not live. John and Gusty Swain, an aunt and uncle, took her, cared for her and later adopted her. The Swains also adopted Lawrence Myhrvold. Cora grew up on a farm in Newark Township. She received her high school education at Pleasant View Luther Academy in Ottawa, IL, where she sang in a traveling octet and did solo work. Cora also attended St. Olaf College, in Northfield, MN. She went to work at Beloit Iron Works where she met her husband, Harold Sorenson. They were married on September 25, 1928 in Luther Valley Church.

Cora also worked at Besleys and J.C. Penney Company. During her life she was president of Cunningham Parents and Teachers Association, an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was Sunday School Superintendent, she sang in the senior choir doing some solo work, sang in the Gospel chorus, and was a member of the Martha Circle and Ruth Circle working in the sewing bee. Cora was also a member of the Outlook Club.

Survivors include her two sons, Alan (Marilyn) Sorenson of Orfordville, WI and Wayne (Fellie) Sorenson of Barstow, CA; two grandsons, Mark (Sandy) Sorenson of Beloit, WI and David (Gigi) Sorenson of Flagstaff, AZ; five great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Daniel, Paul, Joseph C. and Sophia; two sisters-in-law, Elinor Swain and June Sorenson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Harold, two brothers, Herman Heyerdahl and Lawrence Swain, five half brothers and sisters, Alvin Heyerdahl, Gust Heyerdahl, Della Everson, Emma Anderson and Irene Myers, one great grandchild, Erik.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2003 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Reverend Clark Kilgard officiating. Burial will be in Luther Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services Saturday in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Foundation.

KENNETH E. STONER, 76, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, August 11, 2003 in his home.

He was born December 31, 1927 in Beloit, WI, the son of Jack and Velma Foster Stoner. Kenneth was a WWII veteran serving with the U.S. Navy. He married Dallas Mildred Stenner on April 21, 1948. She predeceased him on March 26, 1980. Kenneth later married Donni Smith on September 17, 1981 in Rockford, IL.

Kenneth was employed by Cunningham Constructions for 21 years and later worked for and retired from Beloit Corporation in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Donni; children, Laura (Bernard) Porter of Arizona, Dennis (Patsy) Candage- Stoner of Tool, TX, Rebbeca (Lawrence) Gluff of Beloit, WI, Terry (Bob Davis) Otto of Beloit, WI, Penny (Arlen) Chroninger of Beaver Dam, WI, Sandra Clossy of Beloit, WI, Lisa Young of Ann Arbor, MI, David (Joyce) Smith of Friendship, WI, Teri (Tim) Wilson of Milwaukee, WI; 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, and one brother, Wesley Stoner.

Private services will be held on Friday, August 15, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Pastor Cheryl Esbrook officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

VIOLET I. “Aney” SCHNEITER, 86, of Beloit, WI, died Friday, July 4, 2003 in Beloit Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born March 30, 1917 in Kendall, WI, the daughter of William and Margaret Pennewell Hemerley. Violet married Roy Aney on July 30, 1934 in Kendall, WI. She later married Maynard “Pete” Schneiter on December 14, 1969 in Rockton, IL. He predeceased her on July 16, 1984.

Violet was employed by Beloit Memorial Hospital for 30 years as a lab assistant, retiring in 1981. She was an avid dancer. Violet was a member of Redeemer Evangelical Covenant Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan Topham of Beloit, WI; daughter-in-law, Nancy Aney of Beloit, WI; six grandchildren, Kevin (Melanie) Aney of Janesville, WI, Lisa (Matt) Loerke of Beloit, WI, Shawn (Lorrie) Aney of Janesville, WI, Lonnie (Sara) Topham II of Loves Park, IL, Suzan (Joe) Grindy , and Michael Topham both of Machesney Park, IL; 11 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two brothers, Charles (Judy) Hemerley of Janesville, WI and Mahlon (Janice) Hemerley of Beloit, WI; one sister, Eva Dunaway of South Beloit, IL; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, son, Robert, sister, Gertrude Gardner, brother, Clarence Hemerley, granddaughter, Robin Aney, and son-in-law, Lonnie Topham.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Steve J. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the funeral home.
