Stella B. Poradek
Stella B. Poradek, 91, of Kenosha, died Friday October 6, 2000 at Aurora Medical Center. Born on June 9, 1909 in Hickory, WI, she was the daughter of the late William and Nora Rouleau Phillips. She attended schools in Hickory, WI and resided most of her life in Oconto, WI. In later years, she wintered in Arizona and spent summers in Oconto with her daughter. She was a clerk in numeorus grocery stores working until she was about 70 years old. In 1934, she married John Housner in Oconto, where they lived until his death on April 26, 1958. On May 1, 1980, she married Maynard Poradek in Arizona. He preceded her in death on August 24, 1992. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Oconto. Survivors include two sons, James Phyllis Phillips, of Bella Vista, AR; John Nancy Housner, of Kenosha, WI; a daughter, Betty Don Laabs, of Casa Grande, AZ; one brother, Wilford Zelma Phillips, of Kent, WA; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her two husbands, John Housner and Maynard Poradek; one son, Don Housner, and one daughter, Phyllis Laabs; four sisters, Mabel Zanger, Marie McMahon, Grace McMahon and Lucille Blazek; one brother, Richard Phillips. Funeral services were Tuesday, October 10 at 1 p.m. at the Piasecki-Althaus-Thulin Funeral Home, 3720 - 39th Avenue, Kenosha. Interment St. George Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday from 12 noon until the time of the service.
Margaret 'Peggy' Peters
Margaret 'Peggy' Peters, 99, Abrams, died October 2, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Oconto Falls. Margaret was born November 17, 1900 at Iron Mountain, MI to the late Thomas Henry and Sarah Ann Lloyd Grenfell. She attended elementary Washington and Hulst schools and graduated from High School in Iron Mountain in 1918. Her interests of early life were church work and Girl Scouts. She attended State College at Ypsilanti, MI and graduated from there in 1920 as an honor teacher. At College she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Her first teaching position was with Detroit, MI public schools and she also taught English, at night school, to Russians. During that time she attended Wayne University for extra credits. Later she taught in Highland, Park MI and Iron Mountain, MI until 1926. At that time she married Forrest E. Peters who was employed by Levy's Store in Iron Mountain. MI. Mr. Peters was employed later by Chrysler Corp. so his work took them to Texas. They returned to Abrams during the recession in 1929 and with Mr. Peter's parents they traveled back to Texas, on to California for two months, Yosemite Park, Crater Lake, and into the N.W. states, and home through Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills. Later they opened a grocery store in Abrams which they operated for 20 years. Mr. Peters passed away in 1957 so she taught school in Abrams for one year and later taught school for 14 years in Oconto, and attended St. Norbert College in Green Bay during the summer. She was a member of the Oconto First Presbyterian Church. As she grew older she joined the Methodist Church in Abrams. After 1963 she retired and spent her time traveling to Hawaii, Europe, and winter months at St. Petersburg, Florida for 31 years. She resided in Abrams, WI for 70 years where she enjoyed gardening, keeping house and driving during the summer and fall. She is survived by a niece, Jeanette Norman Miller, Iron Mountain, MI; three nephews, Bud Mia Grenfell; Tom Kay Greenfell; David Terry Grenfell all of Kingsford, MI; several great- nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Llewelyn Tudar Grenfell. Peggy made many friends during her life and will be dearly missed. Friends called at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto. Funeral service was 10 a.m. Saturday, October 7 at United Methodist Church, Abrams with Rev. Fredrik Schulz officiating. Burial at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, MI.
Elna Sophia Maria Patz
Elna Sophia Maria Patz, 87, Peshtigo, died October 4, 2000 at the Bay area Medical Center after a short illness. Elna was born October 17, 1912 at Wallace, Michigan to the late Nels and Ellen Anderson Brander. She married Carl E. Sellen, he preceded her in death on February 17, 1971. She married Charles Patz September 29, 1978, he preceded her in death in 1983. Elna was a member of Community Bible Church, Lena for many years. She was an avid reader and writer, having written many poems, some which were published. Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Don Hershey, Pepin, WI; Carol Paul Nielson, Oconomowoc; Lois William Aukofer, Rubicon, WI; Marianne Robert Gauthier, Peshtigo; four sons, Roger Rose Sellen, Norfolk, NE; Albert Shirley Sellen, Phoenix, AZ; Timothy Cheryl Sellen, Green Bay; William Kathy Sellen, Gillett; two sisters, Judith Piccoli, Wheeling, WV; Doris Freiburger, Flaresville, TX; a daughter-in-law, Nona Ruth Sellen, Oconto Falls; 35 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Sellen; two brothers, Robert and Henry Brander; and a sister, Sylvia Ives. Friends called at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Funeral service was 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Mepsted officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery.
Janet E. Arrick
Janet E. Arrick,70, Suring, died at Woodland Village unexpectedly Thursday, October 5, 2000. She was born in Breed Township, January 7, 1930, to the late Frank and Anna Hein Zimmerman. Janet married Lyle Arrick in 1948. She had been employed by Williams Farms for many years. Janet was an accomplished artist, enjoyed crocheting and was a good cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle in 1980. Survivors include three daughters and their families, Patricia Tom Haave, Eureka Springs, AK; Nancy Henry Blazer, Suring; Reyne Robert Albrecht, Gillett; her two sons, Larry Virginia Zimmerman, Two Rivers; Duane Arrick, Suring; her three brothers, Carl Zimmerman, Suring; Elder Elsie Zimmerman and Irvin Zimmerman, all of Manitowoc; her three sisters, Clara Heise, Suring; Dorothy Meyer, Manitowoc; Frieda Earl Aslen, State of Washington; 16 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Janet was preceded in death by her son, Mike in 1971; three brothers, Gust, Leonard and Norbert; three sisters, Alvina, Ruth and an infant. Visitation was held Monday, October 9, 2000, at Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Funeral services were 11 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Kuhn officiating. Burial in Breed Union Cemetery.
Dale D. Kussow
Dale D. Kussow, age 73, of Kewaunee, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at Kewaunee Health Care Center. He was born June 21, 1927 in Wrightstown to the late Alfred H. and Theda Clark Kussow. He married Betty J. Braatz on Feb. 21, 1948, in Fond du Lac. He and his wife, Betty, owned and operated Spiffy Cleaners in Kewaunee for 40 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of VFW Post 3392 and American Legion Post 29, both of Kewaunee. He was also a member of Kewaunee Key Lodge No. 174, F&AM of Kewaunee, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Green Bay, Beja Shrine Temple of Green Bay, member of Kewaunee-Algoma Order of Eastern Star, member of Community Congregational Church of Kewaunee. He was a former member of the Kewaunee Fire Department, retiring after 25 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Kewaunee; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Paulette Kussow, Kewaunee; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dan Daul, Kewaunee; four grandchildren, Marleia Josh Dorner, Michael and Amanda Daul and Jimmy Kussow. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James; and one brother, Darrell. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Buchanan Funeral Home, Kewaunee, and again after 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Community Congregational Church until the time of services. Veterans services will be held at 7 p.m. and Eastern Star and Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.
Richard F. Hucek
Richard F. Hucek, 81, 603 Parker Ave., Algoma, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000 at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit. He was born Nov. 1, 1918 in Misere to the late John and Rose Cesar Hucek. As a young man, he entered the U.S. Army and served in France and Trinidad during World War II. He served as a mechanic in the motor pool, working on anything that was brought in. After his discharge, he returned to Algoma and married Marie Jacobson in Ephraim on Feb. 23, 1946. Richard first worked at Blahnik's Garage as a mechanic for a few years, then worked at the Algoma Foundry, which later became Badger Northland, as a machinist. Richard retired in 1983 from which was then the Calumet Co. in Algoma. He was a former member of the American Legion. Richard is suvived by his wife, Marie, of 54 years; one son, Gary Hucek, Algoma; two daughters, Mary Tom VandeLogt, Rochester, N.Y.; and Karen Darren Reschke, De Pere; two grandchildren, Christopher VandeLogt and Madeline Reschke; three brothers, Harold, Columbus, Ohio; Robert, Algoma; and Kenneth, Comptche, Calif.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and James. Friends called at the Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 4-8 p.m., and from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Pastor Becky Kindschi officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Algoma.
Johanna H. Schley
Johanna H. Schley, age 80, 1227 Fifth St., Algoma, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Door County Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 7, 1919 in the town of Gardner to the late Charles and Eva Dandois Sacotte. The former Johanna Sacotte married Arthur Schley on Oct. 23, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Algoma. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1976. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Lyle De Villers, Forestville; Pat and Terry Qualman and Priscilla Micki and Chuck Swoboda, all of Algoma; one son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Joan Schley, Forestville; 11 grandchildren, Chris and Dianna Schley, Sarah, Ann and Emily DeVillers, Jenny, Brian and Corie Qualman, Mike, Ashley and Lyndsay Swoboda; three sisters, Christina Graf, Algoma; Anna Blaha, Algoma; June Denis Bay, Sturgeon Bay; three sisters-in-law, LaVerne Sacotte, Green Bay; Leone Schley and Esther Schley, both of Forestville; one brother-in-law, LeRoy Myrtle Schley, Sturgeon Bay. She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Friends called at the Wiesner & Massart Funeral Home, Algoma, from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Algoma, until time of services. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Fr. Bill Kuhr officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Ann Van Denack Smeeste
Ann M. Smeester, 97, formerly of Green Bay, went to her eternal reward, Monday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2000, at a Green Bay hospital. Born in New Franken on Jan. 19, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Alvina Leurquin Dantinne. In 1920 she married Julius Van Denack at St. Hubert's Church in Sugarbush and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1938. In 1945 she married Alex Smeester at Holy Trinity Church in Casco and he preceded her in death on June 22, 1975. Ann was a tavern owner and bartender with her spouses for 40 years in Luxemburg Smeester's Tavern and Casco Van Denack's Tavern. She worked at the General Merchandise Store in Casco for 10 years and was a nurse's aide at St. Vincent Hospital, seventh floor for 13 years. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Parish and the SS. Peter and Paul Altar Society, Third Order Secular Franciscan and Prefect, the Catholic Knights, the Foresters, and the St. Ann Altar Society. She also sewed for the missions. Ann enjoyed playing cards, bowling, basketball, reading, knitting and especially spending time with her family. She is survived by four children and spouses, Julius and Patricia Van Denack, St. Augustine, Fla.; Sister Julia Van Denack, Slinger; Rosemary Derenne, Luxemburg; Armaine and Antone Kushava, Green Bay; 20 grandchildren, Anne Mel Mertens; Cecilia Joseph Jossart; Dolores Jerry Jeanquart; Rita Dan Price; Jim Derenne; Jean Dave Winters; Cathy Randy Fameree; Andrew Lori Derenne; Francis Debbie Derenne; Mike Brenda Derenne; Charlotte Randy Everard; Vicki Don Schmelzer; Jules Cindy Van Denack; Martin Jane Van Denack; Tom Kelly Van Denack; Tony Kris Van Denack; Julie Dean Knowles; Blanche Steve Richter; Teresa Bob Burns; Henry Jeanne Van Denack; 48 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Olly and Joe Dorner, Luxemburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Viola Dantinne, Sugarbush; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Julius Van Denack and Alex Smeester; three stepsons, Cyril, Arthur and Alex Smeester Jr.; one son-in-law, Walter H. Derenne; two great-grandsons, Nicholas Jeanquart and Lawrence Mertens; two brothers, Achille and Carl Dantinne; three sisters, Esther Smithwick, Carla Mooren and Florence Schneider. Friends called at the Malcore Funeral Home, Green Bay, from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, and prior to the funeral on Thursday. Parish wake service was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. SS. Peter and Paul Ladies Altar Society rosary was recited prior to the funeral at the church. Funeral was held Thursday at 11 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church with Rev. Thomas Farrell officiating. Burial was in the Holy Trinity Cemetery, Casco.
She loved and was loved by many. Now, in our Heavenly Home of Paradise, she is with loved ones who went before her. In love we are all united. Thanks to all who helped care for her including the people from Hospice and especially Anna's House.
