D. REBECCA SKATTUM, 76, of Clinton, WI, died Sunday, June 1, 2003 in her home.

On September 12, 1926 Peter J. Ronnerud and Hattie Ronnerud (Benson) gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Dorothy Rebecca Ronnerud. Instead of delivering her at home, like the rest of the children, they delivered her at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, WI. She had an older sister named Margaret, an older brother named Augustine and twin older brothers named Grant and Phil. They lived on a small farm near Gratiot, WI. On October 21, 1926 she was baptized at West Wiota Lutheran Church.

As a toddler Dorothy spoke Norwegian fluently. She attended a one room schoolhouse and walked there everyday. When she started school, there were a lot of Dorothy’s in her class, so her dad decided they would call her by her middle name, which was Rebecca. So, from then on she was known as Rebecca D. Ronnerud.

When she was 14 years old she was confirmed at west Wiota Lutheran Church. Also she completed the 8th grade in 1940. She then started High School in Argyle, WI. Through all the hard times and laughter Becky then graduated in 1944. She furthered her education, which led her to her career. Her career started as training to be a nurse at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, IL. Through all her hard work Becky completed her studies in September of 1947.

During the last year of her training she met a high school friend who had been discharged from the Navy. WWII had ended. On October 12, 1947 at West Wiota Lutheran Church Vernus S. Skattum and Rebecca D. Ronnerud were married. Vernus was in an apprenticeship for printing for a small newspaper and Rebecca worked as a Registered Nurse in Monroe, WI.

On March 7, 1950 Rebecca gave birth to her first child, Vernus Wayne Skattum. Shortly after that on December 9, 1951 Linda Arlene Skattum was born. Vernus and Rebecca enjoyed their kids very much. Then in 1957 Linda became very ill. She was diagnosed with malignant brain tumors. Vern and Rebecca made several trips in and out of the hospital to see her. Then in April of 1960 Linda Arlene Skattum passed away. They continued their lives with grief and pain.

In 1962 they moved to Clinton, WI and Vern began apprenticeship in plumbing. They joined Pella Lutheran Church where Wayne was confirmed. In 1962, Becky worked for Lakeland Hospital for a short while, and then she worked for Dr. Smith in Clinton for two years. A few months later Dr. Pili came to Clinton and she began working for him. In 1965 they moved to 408 Westview Road. In 1971, Wayne gave Rebecca her first grandchild. But then in January of 1972, Andrea Daniel Skattum who was only six months had passed away. In 1973 Dr. Pili went to work at Medical Associates in Beloit, WI. Becky was also employed there. On May 17, Wayne gave Rebecca her second grandchild, Bryan Christopher Skattum. Then on October 16, Wayne gave Rebecca her third grandchild, Jennifer Marie Skattum and joy was brought to Becky.

In 1984 Rebecca had to take a leave of absence from work, Vern became very ill. Shortly after that on March 26, 1984 Vernus S. Skattum had passed away. Then her life continued. Five months later on August 3, 1984, Wayne gave her one last grandchild, Nichole Lee Skattum. Rebecca was delighted. Then in 1991 her sister Margaret passed away. She continued to work at Medical Associates, which is now Family Associates. She worked until the fall of 1991 when she retired. When she retired she volunteered at the Senior Center for seven years as well as her church.” My Church is very important to me”

Throughout the years her granddaughter Jennifer Skattum gave birth to Kelci Rebecca Jean Roerig on December 5, 2000. That was Becky’s first great grandchild. “She has kind of Stolen my heart” She has been devoted to her family and her community. She use to go out with the gals and play cards once a week. Especially her great next-door neighbor who she has been close to for years. She has been there to check on her, or to just stop in and say hi. You were a good friend. Rebecca’s life was filled with joy, love, laughter and pain. May god bless her and keep her safe.

“I am truly blessed. My husband’s family continued to include me in family gatherings and that means a lot to me. All family gatherings are wonderful.”

We did what she wanted, which was to bring her home. I had told her since I was little. I will take care of her someday. So when the time came, I did. I would be there every morning to help her with anything. I would arrive around 9 a.m. and stay till 12 or 1 p.m. My visits were happy ones. I would bring my daughter Kelci, and she would play with grandma. Becky would sing to her, play with the puzzle or even try to dance with her. Kelci will miss her dearly too. She was a fighter and put up a good fight until the end. But she is happy now; she will be with my grandfather in heaven. She was a good person. My grandma (Becky) had always been there for our family. She would always give us a hug and a kiss before we left for home. For holidays, she would stick a piece of gum in our cards. When we would leave her home for any reason, she was always standing in the back window, waving to us. It was a ritual to beep our horn to say “I love you.” She was there through good times and bad for me growing up. She was someone I could always talk to, and no matter what I would tell her, she would just listen. With strength from her, I finished my diploma for high school and went on to get a Nursing Assistant license, and in the fall I will follow in her foot steps to start my Registered Nursing classes. She was my mentor. I will miss you so much grandma. You are in a better place now and with grandpa. You will always be in my prayers. I love you.- Jennifer Skatttum- “I love you Mom” –Wayne Skattum-

“May you rest in peace with grandpa, Andrea and aunt Linda, You are finally home and I will miss you. I love you grandma” -Nichole Skattum-
